An example in the vanishing discount problem for monotone systems of Hamilton-Jacobi equations

In recent years, there have been many contributions to the vanishing discount problem for Hamilton-Jacobi equations. In the case of the scalar equation, B. Ziliotto [Convergence of the solutions of the discounted Hamilton-Jacobi equation: a counterexample. J. Math. Pures Appl. (9) 128 (2019), 330-338] has shown an example of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation having non-convex Hamiltonian in the gradient variable, for which the full convergence of the solutions does not hold as the discount factor tends to zero. We give an example of the nonlinear monotone system of Hamilton-Jacobi equations having convex Hamiltonians in the gradient variable, for which the whole family convergence of the solutions does not hold.

The vanishing discount problem for monotone systems of Hamilton-Jacobi equations: a counterexample to the full convergence

In recent years there has been intense interest in the vanishing discount problem for Hamilton-Jacobi equations. In the case of the scalar equation, B. Ziliotto has recently given an example of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation having non-convex Hamiltonian in the gradient variable, for which the full convergence of the solutions does not hold as the discount factor tends to zero. We give here an explicit example of nonlinear monotone systems of Hamilton-Jacobi equations having convex Hamiltonians in the gradient variable, for which the full convergence of the solutions fails as the discount factor goes to zero.

Discrete approximation of the viscous HJ equation

We consider a stochastic discretization of the stationary viscous Hamilton Jacobi equation on the flat d dimensional torus, associated with a Hamiltonian, convex and superlinear in the momentum variable. We show that each discrete problem admits a unique continuous solution on the torus, up to additive constants. By additionally assuming a technical condition on the associated Lagrangian, we show that each solution of the viscous Hamilton Jacobi equation is the limit of solutions of the discrete problems, as the discretization step goes to zero.

The vanishing discount problem for monotone systems of Hamilton-Jacobi equations. Part 1: linear coupling

We establish a convergence theorem for the vanishing discount problem for a weakly coupled system of Hamilton-Jacobi equations. The crucial step is the introduction of Mather measures and their relatives for the system, which we call respectively viscosity Mather and Green-Poisson measures. This is done by the convex duality and the duality between the space of continuous functions on a compact set and the space of Borel measures on it. This is part 1 of our study of the vanishing discount problem for systems, which focuses on the linear coupling, while part 2 will be concerned with nonlinear coupling.

The vanishing discount problem for monotone systems of Hamilton-Jacobi equations. Part 2: Nonlinear coupling

We study the vanishing discount problem for a nonlinear monotone system of Hamilton-Jacobi equations. This continues the first author's investigation on the vanishing discount problem for a monotone system of Hamilton-Jacobi equations. As in Part 1, we introduce by the convex duality Mather measures and their analogues for the system, which we call respectively Mather and Green-Poisson measures, and prove a convergence theorem for the vanishing discount problem. Moreover, we establish an existence result for the ergodic problem.

Vanishing contact structure problem and convergence of the viscosity solutions

This paper is devoted to study the vanishing contact structure problem which is a generalization of the vanishing discount problem. Let $H^λ(x,p,u)$ be a family of Hamiltonians of contact type with parameter $λ>0$ and converges to $G(x,p)$. For the contact type Hamilton-Jacobi equation with respect to $H^λ$, we prove that, under mild assumptions, the associated viscosity solution $u^λ$ converges to a specific viscosity solution $u^0$ of the vanished contact equation. As applications, we give some convergence results for the nonlinear vanishing discount problem.

On the Langevin equation with variable friction

We study two asymptotic problems for the Langevin equation with variable friction coefficient. The first is the small mass asymptotic behavior, known as the Smoluchowski-Kramers approximation, of the Langevin equation with strictly positive variable friction. The second result is about the limiting behavior of the solution when the friction vanishes in regions of the domain. Previous works on this subject considered one dimensional settings with the conclusions based on explicit computations.

Metastability for parabolic equations with drift: part II. The quasilinear case

This is the second part of our series of papers on metastability results for parabolic equations with drift. The aim is to present a self-contained study, using partial differential equations methods, of the metastability properties of quasi-linear parabolic equations with a drift and to obtain results similar to those in Freidlin and Koralov [Nonlinear stochastic perturbations of dynamical systems and quasi-linear parabolic PDE's with a small parameter, Probab. Theory Related Fields 147 (2010), ArXiv:0903.0428v2 (2012)].

On viscosity solution of HJB equations with state constraints and reflection control

Motivated by a control problem of a certain queueing network we consider a control problem where the dynamics is constrained in the nonnegative orthant $\mathbb{R}_+$ of the $d$-dimensional Euclidean space and controlled by the reflections at the faces/boundaries. We define a discounted value function associated to this problem and show that the value function is a viscosity solution to a certain HJB equation in $\mathbb{R}_+$ with nonlinear Neumann type boundary condition. Under certain conditions, we also characterize this value function as the unique solution to this HJB equation.

The vanishing discount problem and viscosity Mather measures. Part 1: the problem on a torus

We develop a variational approach to the vanishing discount problem for fully nonlinear, degenerate elliptic, partial differential equations. Under mild assumptions, we introduce viscosity Mather measures for such partial differential equations, which are natural extensions of the Mather measures. Using the viscosity Mather measures, we prove that the whole family of solutions $v^λ$ of the discount problem with the factor $λ>0$ converges to a solution of the ergodic problem as $λ\to 0$.

The vanishing discount problem and viscosity Mather measures. Part 2: boundary value problems

In arXiv:1603.01051 (Part 1 of this series), we have introduced a variational approach to studying the vanishing discount problem for fully nonlinear, degenerate elliptic, partial differential equations in a torus. We develop this approach further here to handle boundary value problems. In particular, we establish new representation formulas for solutions of discount problems, critical values, and use them to prove convergence results for the vanishing discount problems.

Metastability for parabolic equations with drift: part 1

We provide a self-contained analysis, based entirely on pde methods, of the exponentially long time behavior of solutions to linear uniformly parabolic equations which are small perturbations of a transport equation with vector field having a globally stable point. We show that the solutions converge to a constant, which is either the initial value at the stable point or the boundary value at the minimum of the associated quasi-potential. This work extends previous results of Freidlin and Wentzell and Freidlin and Koralov and applies also to semilinear elliptic pde.

A new PDE approach to the large time asymptotics of solutions of Hamilton-Jacobi equations

We introduce a new PDE approach to establishing the large time asymptotic behavior of solutions of Hamilton-Jacobi equations, which modifies and simplifies the previous ones (Barles and Souganidis, 2000; Barles, Ishii and Mitake, 2012), under a refined "strict convexity" assumption on the Hamiltonians. Not only such "strict convexity" conditions generalize the corresponding requirements on the Hamiltonians in Barles and Souganidis (2000), but also one of the most refined our conditions covers the situation studied in Namah and Roquejoffre (1999).

On the Large Time Behavior of Solutions of Hamilton-Jacobi Equations Associated with Nonlinear Boundary Conditions

In this article, we study the large time behavior of solutions of first-order Hamilton-Jacobi Equations, set in a bounded domain with nonlinear Neumann boundary conditions, including the case of dynamical boundary conditions. We establish general convergence results for viscosity solutions of these Cauchy-Neumann problems by using two fairly different methods : the first one relies only on partial differential equations methods, which provides results even when the Hamiltonians are not convex, and the second one is an optimal control/dynamical system approach, named the "weak KAM approach" which requires the convexity of Hamiltonians and gives formulas for asymptotic solutions based on Aubry-Mather sets.

Weak KAM aspects of convex Hamilton-Jacobi equations with Neumann type boundary conditions

We establish the stability under the formations of infimum and of convex combinations of subsolutions of convex Hamilton-Jacobi equations, some comparison and existence results for convex and coercive Hamilton-Jacobi equations with the Neumann type boundary condition as well as existence results for the Skorokhod problem. We define the Aubry-Mather set associated with the Neumann type boundary problem and establish some properties of the Aubry-Mather set including the existence results for the ``calibrated'' extremals for the corresponding action functional (or variational problem).
