Qubit detection with a T-shaped double quantum dot detector

We propose to continuously monitor a charge qubit by utilizing a T-shaped double quantum dot detector, in which the qubit and double dot are arranged in such a unique way that the detector turns out to be particularly susceptible to the charge states of the qubit. Special attention is paid to the regime where acquisition of qubit information and backaction upon the measured system exhibit nontrivial correlation. The intrinsic dynamics of the qubit gives rise to dynamical blockade of tunneling events through the detector, resulting in a super-Poissonian noise. However, such a pronounced enhancement of detector's shot noise does not necessarily produce a rising dephasing rate. In contrast, an inhibition of dephasing is entailed by the reduction of information acquisition in the dynamically blockaded regimes. We further reveal the important impact of the charge fluctuations on the measurement characteristics. Noticeably, under the condition of symmetric junction capacitances the noise pedestal of circuit current is completely suppressed, leading to a divergent signal-to-noise ratio, and eventually to a violation of the Korotkov-Averin bound in quantum measurement. Our study offers the possibility for a double dot detector to reach the quantum limited effectiveness in a transparent manner.

Conditional spin counting statistics as a probe of Coulomb interaction and spin-resolved bunching

Full counting statistics is a powerful tool to characterize the noise and correlations in transport through mesoscopic systems. In this work, we propose the theory of conditional spin counting statistics, i.e., the statistical fluctuations of spin-up (down) current given the observation of the spin-down (up) current. In the context of transport through a single quantum dot, it is demonstrated that a strong Coulomb interaction leads to a conditional spin counting statistics that exhibits a substantial change in comparison to that without Coulomb repulsion. It thus can be served as an effective way to probe the Coulomb interactions in mesoscopic transport systems. In case of spin polarized transport, it is further shown that the conditional spin counting statistics offers a transparent tool to reveal the spin-resolved bunching behavior.

Experimental test of the spin mixing interface conductivity concept

We perform a quantitative, comparative study of the spin pumping, spin Seebeck and spin Hall magnetoresistance effects, all detected via the inverse spin Hall effect in a series of over 20 yttrium iron garnet/Pt samples. Our experimental results fully support present, exclusively spin current-based, theoretical models using a single set of plausible parameters for spin mixing conductance, spin Hall angle and spin diffusion length. Our findings establish the purely spintronic nature of the aforementioned effects and provide a quantitative description in particular of the spin Seebeck effect.

Intrinsic spin-relaxation induced negative tunnel magnetoresistance in a single-molecule magnet

We investigate theoretically the effects of intrinsic spin-relaxation on the spin-dependent transport through a single-molecule magnet (SMM), which is weakly coupled to ferromagnetic leads. The tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) is obtained by means of the rate-equation approach including not only the sequential but also the cotunneling processes. It is shown that the TMR is strongly suppressed by the fast spin-relaxation in the sequential region and can vary from a large positive to slight negative value in the cotunneling region. Moreover, with an external magnetic field along the easy-axis of SMM, a large negative TMR is found when the relaxation strength increases. Finally, in the high bias voltage limit the TMR for the negative bias is slightly larger than its characteristic value of the sequential region, however it can become negative for the positive bias caused by the fast spin-relaxation.

Non-Markovian dynamics and noise characteristics in continuous measurement of a solid-state charge qubit

We investigate the non-Markovian characteristics in continuous measurement of a charge qubit by a quantum point contact. The backflow of information from the reservoir to the system in the non-Markovian domain gives rise to strikingly different qubit relaxation and dephasing in comparison with the Markovian case. The intriguing non-Markovian dynamics is found to have a direct impact on the output noise feature of the detector. Unambiguously, we observe that the non-Markovian memory effect results in an enhancement of the signal-to-noise ratio, which can even exceed the upper limit of ``4'', leading thus to the violation of the Korotkov-Averin bound in quantum measurement. Our study thus may open new possibilities to improve detector's measurement efficiency in a direct and transparent way.

Spin-resolved bunching and noise characteristics in double quantum dots coupled to ferromagnetic electrodes

We study spin-resolved noise in Coulomb blockaded double quantum dots coupled to ferromagnetic electrodes. The modulation of the interdot coupling and spin polarization in the electrodes gives rise to an intriguing dynamical spin $\uparrow$-$\uparrow$ ($\downarrow$-$\downarrow$) blockade mechanism: Bunching of up (down) spins due to dynamical blockade of an up (down) spin. In contrast to the conventional dynamical spin $\uparrow$-$\downarrow$ bunching (bunching of up spins entailed by dynamical blockade of a down spin), this new bunching behavior is found to be intimately associated with the spin mutual-correlation, i.e., the noise fluctuation between opposite spin currents. We further demonstrate that the dynamical spin $\uparrow$-$\uparrow$ and $\uparrow$-$\downarrow$ bunching of tunneling events may be coexistent in the regime of weak interdot coupling and low spin polarization.

AC Voltage Generation by Spin Pumping and Inverse Spin Hall Effect

The polarization of the spin current pumped by a precessing ferromagnet into an adjacent normal metal has a constant component parallel to the precession axis and a rotating one normal to the magnetization. The former component is now routinely detected in the form of a DC voltage induced by the inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE). Here we compute AC-ISHE voltages much larger than the DC signals for various material combinations and discuss optimal conditions to observe the effect. Including the backflow of spins is essential for distilling parameters such as the spin Hall angle from ISHE-detected spin pumping experiments.

Quantum Efficiency of Charge Qubit Measurements Using a Single Electron Transistor

The quantum efficiency, which characterizes the quality of information gain against information loss, is an important figure of merit for any realistic quantum detectors in the gradual process of collapsing the state being measured. In this work we consider the problem of solid-state charge qubit measurements with a single-electron-transistor (SET). We analyze two models: one corresponds to a strong response SET, and the other is a tunable one in response strength. We find that the response strength would essentially bound the quantum efficiency, making the detector non-quantum-limited. Quantum limited measurements, however, can be achieved in the limits of strong response and asymmetric tunneling. The present study is also associated with appropriate justifications for the measurement and backaction-dephasing rates, which were usually evaluated in controversial methods.

Spin current and polarization reversal through a single-molecule magnet with ferromagnetic electrodes

We theoretically study the spin-polarized transport through a single-molecule magnet, which is weakly coupled to ferromagnetic leads, by means of the rate-equation approach. We consider both the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange-couplings between the molecular magnet and transported electron-spin in the nonlinear tunneling regime. For the ferromagnetic exchangecoupling, spin current exhibits step- and basin-like behaviors in the parallel and antiparallel configurations respectively. An interesting observation is that the polarization reversal of spin-current can be realized and manipulated by the variation of bias voltage in the case of antiferromagnetic exchange-coupling with antiparallel lead-configuration, which may be useful in the development of spintronic devices, while the bias voltage can only affect the magnitude of spin-polarization in the ferromagnetic coupling.

Spin-dependent thermoelectric transport through double quantum dots

We study thermoelectric transport through double quantum dots system with spin-dependent interdot coupling and ferromagnetic electrodes by means of the non-equilibrium Green function in the linear response regime. It is found that the thermoelectric coefficients are strongly dependent on the splitting of interdot coupling, the relative magnetic configurations and the spin polarization of leads. In particular, the thermoelectric efficiency can achieve considerable value in parallel configuration when the effective interdot coupling and tunnel coupling between QDs and the leads for spin-down electrons are small. Moreover, the thermoelectric efficiency increases with the intradot Coulomb interactions increasing and can reach very high value at an appropriate temperature. In the presence of the magnetic field, the spin accumulation in leads strongly suppresses the thermoelectric efficiency and a pure spin thermopower can be obtained.

Tunneling anisotropic magnetoresistance in single-molecule magnet junctions

We theoretically investigate quantum transport through single-molecule magnet (SMM) junctions with ferromagnetic and normal-metal leads in the sequential regime. The current obtained by means of the rate-equation gives rise to the tunneling anisotropic magnetoresistance (TAMR), which varies with the angle between the magnetization direction of ferromagnetic lead and the easy axis of SMM. The angular dependence of TAMR can serve as a probe to determine experimentally the easy axis of SMM. Moreover, it is demonstrated that both the magnitude and sign of TAMR are tunable by the bias voltage, suggesting a promising TAMR based spintronic molecule-device.

Full Counting statistics of level renormalization in electron transport through double quantum dots

We examine the full counting statistics of electron transport through double quantum dots coupled in series, with particular attention being paid to the unique features originating from level renormalization. It is clearly illustrated that the energy renormalization gives rise to a dynamic charge blockade mechanism, which eventually results in super-Poissonian noise. Coupling of the double dots to an external heat bath leads to dephasing and relaxation mechanisms, which are demonstrated to suppress the noise in a unique way.

Renormalized dynamics in charge qubit measurements by a single electron transistor

We investigate charge qubit measurements using a single electron transistor, with focus on the backaction-induced renormalization of qubit parameters. It is revealed the renormalized dynamics leads to a number of intriguing features in the detector's noise spectra, and therefore needs to be accounted for to properly understand the measurement result. Noticeably, the level renormalization gives rise to a strongly enhanced signal-to-noise ratio, which can even exceed the universal upper bound imposed quantum mechanically on linear-response detectors.

Coulomb blockade double-dot Aharonov-Bohm interferometer: giant fluctuations

Electron transport through two parallel quantum dots is a kind of solid-state realization of double-path interference. We demonstrate that the inter-dot Coulomb correlation and quantum coherence would result in strong current fluctuations with a divergent Fano factor at zero frequency. We also provide physical interpretation for this surprising result, which displays its generic feature and allows us to recover this phenomenon in more complicated systems.
