Self-Supervised Speech Denoising Using Only Noisy Audio Signals

In traditional speech denoising tasks, clean audio signals are often used as the training target, but absolutely clean signals are collected from expensive recording equipment or in studios with the strict environments. To overcome this drawback, we propose an end-to-end self-supervised speech denoising training scheme using only noisy audio signals, named Only-Noisy Training (ONT), without extra training conditions. The proposed ONT strategy constructs training pairs only from each single noisy audio, and it contains two modules: training audio pairs generated module and speech denoising module. The first module adopts a random audio sub-sampler on each noisy audio to generate training pairs. The sub-sampled pairs are then fed into a novel complex-valued speech denoising module. Experimental results show that the proposed method not only eliminates the high dependence on clean targets of traditional audio denoising tasks, but also achieves on-par or better performance than other training strategies. MNet: Rethinking 2D/3D Networks for Anisotropic Medical Image Segmentation

The nature of thick-slice scanning causes severe inter-slice discontinuities of 3D medical images, and the vanilla 2D/3D convolutional neural networks (CNNs) fail to represent sparse inter-slice information and dense intra-slice information in a balanced way, leading to severe underfitting to inter-slice features (for vanilla 2D CNNs) and overfitting to noise from long-range slices (for vanilla 3D CNNs). In this work, a novel mesh network (MNet) is proposed to balance the spatial representation inter axes via learning. 1) Our MNet latently fuses plenty of representation processes by embedding multi-dimensional convolutions deeply into basic modules, making the selections of representation processes flexible, thus balancing representation for sparse inter-slice information and dense intra-slice information adaptively. 2) Our MNet latently fuses multi-dimensional features inside each basic module, simultaneously taking the advantages of 2D (high segmentation accuracy of the easily recognized regions in 2D view) and 3D (high smoothness of 3D organ contour) representations, thus obtaining more accurate modeling for target regions. Comprehensive experiments are performed on four public datasets (CT\&MR), the results consistently demonstrate the proposed MNet outperforms the other methods. XMorpher: Full Transformer for Deformable Medical Image Registration via Cross Attention

An effective backbone network is important to deep learning-based Deformable Medical Image Registration (DMIR), because it extracts and matches the features between two images to discover the mutual correspondence for fine registration. However, the existing deep networks focus on single image situation and are limited in registration task which is performed on paired images. Therefore, we advance a novel backbone network, XMorpher, for the effective corresponding feature representation in DMIR. 1) It proposes a novel full transformer architecture including dual parallel feature extraction networks which exchange information through cross attention, thus discovering multi-level semantic correspondence while extracting respective features gradually for final effective registration. 2) It advances the Cross Attention Transformer (CAT) blocks to establish the attention mechanism between images which is able to find the correspondence automatically and prompts the features to fuse efficiently in the network. 3) It constrains the attention computation between base windows and searching windows with different sizes, and thus focuses on the local transformation of deformable registration and enhances the computing efficiency at the same time. Without any bells and whistles, our XMorpher gives Voxelmorph 2.8% improvement on DSC , demonstrating its effective representation of the features from the paired images in DMIR. We believe that our XMorpher has great application potential in more paired medical images. Our XMorpher is open on https://github.com/Solemoon/XMorpher

Deep Complementary Joint Model for Complex Scene Registration and Few-shot Segmentation on Medical Images

Deep learning-based medical image registration and segmentation joint models utilize the complementarity (augmentation data or weakly supervised data from registration, region constraints from segmentation) to bring mutual improvement in complex scene and few-shot situation. However, further adoption of the joint models are hindered: 1) the diversity of augmentation data is reduced limiting the further enhancement of segmentation, 2) misaligned regions in weakly supervised data disturb the training process, 3) lack of label-based region constraints in few-shot situation limits the registration performance. We propose a novel Deep Complementary Joint Model (DeepRS) for complex scene registration and few-shot segmentation. We embed a perturbation factor in the registration to increase the activity of deformation thus maintaining the augmentation data diversity. We take a pixel-wise discriminator to extract alignment confidence maps which highlight aligned regions in weakly supervised data so the misaligned regions' disturbance will be suppressed via weighting. The outputs from segmentation model are utilized to implement deep-based region constraints thus relieving the label requirements and bringing fine registration. Extensive experiments on the CT dataset of MM-WHS 2017 Challenge show great advantages of our DeepRS that outperforms the existing state-of-the-art models.

Generative networks as inverse problems with fractional wavelet scattering networks

Deep learning is a hot research topic in the field of machine learning methods and applications. Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) and Variational Auto-Encoders (VAEs) provide impressive image generations from Gaussian white noise, but both of them are difficult to train since they need to train the generator (or encoder) and the discriminator (or decoder) simultaneously, which is easy to cause unstable training. In order to solve or alleviate the synchronous training difficult problems of GANs and VAEs, recently, researchers propose Generative Scattering Networks (GSNs), which use wavelet scattering networks (ScatNets) as the encoder to obtain the features (or ScatNet embeddings) and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) as the decoder to generate the image. The advantage of GSNs is the parameters of ScatNets are not needed to learn, and the disadvantage of GSNs is that the expression ability of ScatNets is slightly weaker than CNNs and the dimensional reduction method of Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is easy to lead overfitting in the training of GSNs, and therefore affect the generated quality in the testing process. In order to further improve the quality of generated images while keep the advantages of GSNs, this paper proposes Generative Fractional Scattering Networks (GFRSNs), which use more expressive fractional wavelet scattering networks (FrScatNets) instead of ScatNets as the encoder to obtain the features (or FrScatNet embeddings) and use the similar CNNs of GSNs as the decoder to generate the image. Additionally, this paper develops a new dimensional reduction method named Feature-Map Fusion (FMF) instead of PCA for better keeping the information of FrScatNets and the effect of image fusion on the quality of image generation is also discussed.

Heart Rate Variability and Respiration Signal as Diagnostic Tools for Late Onset Sepsis in Neonatal Intensive Care Units

Apnea-bradycardia is one of the major clinical early indicators of late-onset sepsis occurring in approximately 7% to 10% of all neonates and in more than 25% of very low birth weight infants in NICU. The objective of this paper was to determine if HRV, respiration and their relationships help to diagnose infection in premature infants via non-invasive ways in NICU. Therefore, we implement Mono-Channel (MC) and Bi-Channel (BC) Analysis in two groups: sepsis (S) vs. non-sepsis (NS). Firstly, we studied RR series not only by linear methods: time domain and frequency domain, but also by non-linear methods: chaos theory and information theory. The results show that alpha Slow, alpha Fast and Sample Entropy are significant parameters to distinguish S from NS. Secondly, the question about the functional coupling of HRV and nasal respiration is addressed. Local linear correlation coefficient r2t,f has been explored, while non-linear regression coefficient h2 was calculated in two directions. It is obvious that r2t,f within the third frequency band (0.2<f<0.4 Hz) and h2 in two directions were complementary approaches to diagnose sepsis. Thirdly, feasibility study is carried out on the candidate parameters selected from MC and BC respectively. We discovered that the proposed test based on optimal fusion of 6 features shows good performance with the largest AUC and a reduced probability of false alarm (PFA).

PCANet: An energy perspective

The principal component analysis network (PCANet), which is one of the recently proposed deep learning architectures, achieves the state-of-the-art classification accuracy in various databases. However, the explanation of the PCANet is lacked. In this paper, we try to explain why PCANet works well from energy perspective point of view based on a set of experiments. The impact of various parameters on the error rate of PCANet is analyzed in depth. It was found that this error rate is correlated with the logarithm of energy of image. The proposed energy explanation approach can be used as a testing method for checking if every step of the constructed networks is necessary.

Phase-only signal reconstruction by MagnitudeCut

In this paper, we present a new algorithm, called MagnitudeCut, for recovering a signal from the phase of its Fourier transform. We casted our recovering problem into a new convex optimization problem, and then solved it by the block coordinate descent algorithm and the interior point algorithm, in which the iteration process consists of matrix vector product and inner product. We used the new method for reconstruction of a set of signal/image. The simulation results reveal that the proposed MagnitudeCut method can reconstruct the original signal with fewer sampling number of the phase information than that of the Greedy algorithm and iterative method under the same reconstruction error. Moreover, our algorithm can also reconstruct the symmetric image from its Fourier phase.

Color Image Classification via Quaternion Principal Component Analysis Network

The Principal Component Analysis Network (PCANet), which is one of the recently proposed deep learning architectures, achieves the state-of-the-art classification accuracy in various databases. However, the performance of PCANet may be degraded when dealing with color images. In this paper, a Quaternion Principal Component Analysis Network (QPCANet), which is an extension of PCANet, is proposed for color images classification. Compared to PCANet, the proposed QPCANet takes into account the spatial distribution information of color images and ensures larger amount of intra-class invariance of color images. Experiments conducted on different color image datasets such as Caltech-101, UC Merced Land Use, Georgia Tech face and CURet have revealed that the proposed QPCANet achieves higher classification accuracy than PCANet.

Error Gradient-based Variable-Lp Norm Constraint LMS Algorithm for Sparse System Identification

Sparse adaptive filtering has gained much attention due to its wide applicability in the field of signal processing. Among the main algorithm families, sparse norm constraint adaptive filters develop rapidly in recent years. However, when applied for system identification, most priori work in sparse norm constraint adaptive filtering suffers from the difficulty of adaptability to the sparsity of the systems to be identified. To address this problem, we propose a novel variable p-norm constraint least mean square (LMS) algorithm, which serves as a variant of the conventional Lp-LMS algorithm established for sparse system identification. The parameter p is iteratively adjusted by the gradient descent method applied to the instantaneous square error. Numerical simulations show that this new approach achieves better performance than the traditional Lp-LMS and LMS algorithms in terms of steady-state error and convergence rate.

Gradient Compared Lp-LMS Algorithms for Sparse System Identification

In this paper, we propose two novel p-norm penalty least mean square (Lp-LMS) algorithms as supplements of the conventional Lp-LMS algorithm established for sparse adaptive filtering recently. A gradient comparator is employed to selectively apply the zero attractor of p-norm constraint for only those taps that have the same polarity as that of the gradient of the squared instantaneous error, which leads to the new proposed gradient compared p-norm constraint LMS algorithm (LpGC-LMS). We explain that the LpGC-LMS can achieve lower mean square error than the standard Lp-LMS algorithm theoretically and experimentally. To further improve the performance of the filter, the LpNGC-LMS algorithm is derived using a new gradient comparator which takes the sign-smoothed version of the previous one. The performance of the LpNGC-LMS is superior to that of the LpGC-LMS in theory and in simulations. Moreover, these two comparators can be easily applied to other norm constraint LMS algorithms to derive some new approaches for sparse adaptive filtering. The numerical simulation results show that the two proposed algorithms achieve better performance than the standard LMS algorithm and Lp-LMS algorithm in terms of convergence rate and steady-state behavior in sparse system identification settings.

Kernel principal component analysis network for image classification

In order to classify the nonlinear feature with linear classifier and improve the classification accuracy, a deep learning network named kernel principal component analysis network (KPCANet) is proposed. First, mapping the data into higher space with kernel principal component analysis to make the data linearly separable. Then building a two-layer KPCANet to obtain the principal components of image. Finally, classifying the principal components with linearly classifier. Experimental results show that the proposed KPCANet is effective in face recognition, object recognition and hand-writing digits recognition, it also outperforms principal component analysis network (PCANet) generally as well. Besides, KPCANet is invariant to illumination and stable to occlusion and slight deformation.

Efficient Legendre moment computation for grey level images

Legendre orthogonal moments have been widely used in the field of image analysis. Because their computation by a direct method is very time expensive, recent efforts have been devoted to the reduction of computational complexity. Nevertheless, the existing algorithms are mainly focused on binary images. We propose here a new fast method for computing the Legendre moments, which is not only suitable for binary images but also for grey levels. We first set up the recurrence formula of one-dimensional (1D) Legendre moments by using the recursive property of Legendre polynomials. As a result, the 1D Legendre moments of order p, Lp = Lp(0), can be expressed as a linear combination of Lp-1(1) and Lp-2(0). Based on this relationship, the 1D Legendre moments Lp(0) is thus obtained from the array of L1(a) and L0(a) where a is an integer number less than p. To further decrease the computation complexity, an algorithm, in which no multiplication is required, is used to compute these quantities. The method is then extended to the calculation of the two-dimensional Legendre moments Lpq. We show that the proposed method is more efficient than the direct method.

Multilinear Principal Component Analysis Network for Tensor Object Classification

The recently proposed principal component analysis network (PCANet) has been proved high performance for visual content classification. In this letter, we develop a tensorial extension of PCANet, namely, multilinear principal analysis component network (MPCANet), for tensor object classification. Compared to PCANet, the proposed MPCANet uses the spatial structure and the relationship between each dimension of tensor objects much more efficiently. Experiments were conducted on different visual content datasets including UCF sports action video sequences database and UCF11 database. The experimental results have revealed that the proposed MPCANet achieves higher classification accuracy than PCANet for tensor object classification.

Performance evaluation of wavelet scattering network in image texture classification in various color spaces

Texture plays an important role in many image analysis applications. In this paper, we give a performance evaluation of color texture classification by performing wavelet scattering network in various color spaces. Experimental results on the KTH_TIPS_COL database show that opponent RGB based wavelet scattering network outperforms other color spaces. Therefore, when dealing with the problem of color texture classification, opponent RGB based wavelet scattering network is recommended.

Tensor object classification via multilinear discriminant analysis network

This paper proposes a multilinear discriminant analysis network (MLDANet) for the recognition of multidimensional objects, known as tensor objects. The MLDANet is a variation of linear discriminant analysis network (LDANet) and principal component analysis network (PCANet), both of which are the recently proposed deep learning algorithms. The MLDANet consists of three parts: 1) The encoder learned by MLDA from tensor data. 2) Features maps ob-tained from decoder. 3) The use of binary hashing and histogram for feature pooling. A learning algorithm for MLDANet is described. Evaluations on UCF11 database indicate that the proposed MLDANet outperforms the PCANet, LDANet, MPCA + LDA, and MLDA in terms of classification for tensor objects.

L1-norm minimization for quaternion signals

The l1-norm minimization problem plays an important role in the compressed sensing (CS) theory. We present in this letter an algorithm for solving the problem of l1-norm minimization for quaternion signals by converting it to second-order cone programming. An application example of the proposed algorithm is also given for practical guidelines of perfect recovery of quaternion signals. The proposed algorithm may find its potential application when CS theory meets the quaternion signal processing.
