Exact Controllability of Discrete-Time Stochastic System with Multiplicative Noise

This paper is concerned with the exact controllability of discrete-time stochastic system which is one of the basic problems of modern control theory. Though the exact controllability of continuous-time system governed by Ito stochastic differential equations has been well studied in S. Peng, Progress in Natural Science, 1994, the counterpart of the discrete-time case is still open due to the adaptiveness constraint of the controllers and the solvability challenging of stochastic difference equation with terminal value. The main contribution in this paper is to present both the Gramian matrix criterion and the Rank criterion for the exact controllability of discrete-time stochastic system. The novelty lies in the transformation of the forward stochastic difference equation into a novel backward one.

Distributed Control of Linear Quadratic Mean Field Social Systems with Heterogeneous Agents

In this paper, we study the social optimality for mean field linear quadratic control systems following the direct approach, where subsystems are coupled via individual dynamics and costs according to a network topology. A graph is introduced to represent the network topology of the large-population system, where nodes represent subpopulations called clusters and edges represent communication relationship. By the direct approach, we first seek the optimal controller under centralized information structure, which characterized by a set of forward-backward stochastic differential equations. Then the feedback controller is obtained with the help of Riccat equations. Finally, we design the distributed controller with mean field approximations, which has the property of asymptotically social optimality.

Indefinite Linear Quadratic Mean Field Social Control Problems with Multiplicative Noise

This paper studies uniform stabilization and social optimality for linear quadratic (LQ) mean field control problems with multiplicative noise, where agents are coupled via dynamics and individual costs. The state and control weights in cost functionals are not limited to be positive semi-definite. This leads to an indefinite LQ mean field control problem, which may still be well-posed due to deep nature of multiplicative noise. We first obtain a set of forward-backward stochastic differential equations (FBSDEs) from variational analysis, and construct a feedback control by decoupling the FBSDEs. By using solutions to two Riccati equations, we design a set of decentralized control laws, which is further shown to be asymptotically social optimal. Some equivalent conditions are given for uniform stabilization of the systems with the help of linear matrix inequalities. A numerical example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed control laws.

LQG Differential Stackelberg Game under Nested Observation Information Pattern

We investigate the linear quadratic Gaussian Stackelberg game under a class of nested observation information pattern. Two decision makers implement control strategies relying on different information sets: The follower uses its observation data to design its strategy, whereas the leader implements its strategy using global observation data. We show that the solution requires solving a new type of forward-backward stochastic differential equations whose drift terms contain two types of conditional expectation terms associated to the adjoint variables. We then propose a method to find the functional relations between each adjoint pair, i.e., each pair formed by an adjoint variable and the conditional expectation of its associated state. The proposed method follows a layered pattern. More precisely, in the inner layer, we seek the functional relation for the adjoint pair under the sigma-sub-algebra generated by follower's observation information; and in the outer layer, we look for the functional relation for the adjoint pair under the sigma-sub-algebra generated by leader's observation information. Our result shows that the optimal open-loop solution admits an explicit feedback type representation. More precisely, the feedback coefficient matrices satisfy tuples of coupled forward-backward differential Riccati equations, and feedback variables are computed by Kalman-Bucy filtering.

A New Approach for Solving Delayed Forward and Backward Stochastic Differential Equations

This paper is concerned with the decoupling of delayed linear forward-backward stochastic differential equations (D-FBSDEs), which is much more involved than the delay-free case due to the infinite dimension caused by the delay. A new approach of `discretization' is proposed to obtain the explicit solution to the D-FBSDEs. Firstly, we transform the continuous-time D-FBSDEs into the discrete-time form by using discretization. Secondly, we derive the solution of the discrete-time D-FBSDEs by applying backward iterative induction. Finally the explicit solution of the continuous-time D-FBSDEs is obtained by taking the limit to the solution of discrete-time form. The proposed approach can be applied to solve more general FBSDEs with delay, which would provide a complete solution to the stochastic LQ control with time delay.

Mean Field Linear Quadratic Control: Uniform Stabilization and Social Optimality

This paper is concerned with uniform stabilization and social optimality for general mean field linear quadratic control systems, where subsystems are coupled via individual dynamics and costs, and the state weight is not assumed with the definiteness condition. For the finite-horizon problem, we first obtain a set of forward-backward stochastic differential equations (FBSDEs) from variational analysis, and construct a feedback-type control by decoupling the FBSDEs. For the infinite-horizon problem, by using solutions to two Riccati equations, we design a set of decentralized control laws, which is further proved to be asymptotically social optimal. Some equivalent conditions are given for uniform stabilization of the systems in different cases, respectively. Finally, the proposed decentralized controls are compared to the asymptotic optimal strategies in previous works.

Optimal Local and Remote Controls of Multiple Systems with Multiplicative Noises and Unreliable Uplink Channels

In this paper, the optimal local and remote linear quadratic (LQ) control problem is studied for a networked control system (NCS) which consists of multiple subsystems and each of which is described by a general multiplicative noise stochastic system with one local controller and one remote controller. Due to the unreliable uplink channels, the remote controller can only access unreliable state information of all subsystems, while the downlink channels from the remote controller to the local controllers are perfect. The difficulties of the LQ control problem for such a system arise from the different information structures of the local controllers and the remote controller. By developing the Pontyagin maximum principle, the necessary and sufficient solvability conditions are derived, which are based on the solution to a group of forward and backward difference equations (G-FBSDEs). Furthermore, by proposing a new method to decouple the G-FBSDEs and introducing new coupled Riccati equations (CREs), the optimal control strategies are derived where we verify that the separation principle holds for the multiplicative noise NCSs with packet dropouts. This paper can be seen as an important contribution to the optimal control problem with asymmetric information structures.

The Difference and Unity of Irregular LQ Control and Standard LQ Control and Its Solution

Irregular linear quadratic control (LQ, was called Singular LQ) has been a long-standing problem since 1970s. This paper will show that an irregular LQ control (deterministic) is solvable (for arbitrary initial value) if and only if the LQ cost can be rewritten as a regular one by changing the terminal cost $x'(T)Hx(T)$ to $x'(T)[H+P_1(T)]x(T)$, while the optimal controller can achieve $P_1(T)x(T)=0$ at the same time. In other words, the irregular controller (if exists) needs to do two things at the same time, one thing is to minimize the cost and the other is to achieve the terminal constraint $P_1(T)x(T)=0$, which clarifies the essential difference of irregular LQ from the standard LQ control where the controller is to minimize the cost only. With this breakthrough, we further study the irregular LQ control for stochastic systems with multiplicative noise. A sufficient solving condition and the optimal controller is presented based on Riccati equations.

A Complete Solution to Optimal Control and Stabilization for Mean-field Systems: Part I, Discrete-time Case

Different from most of the previous works, this paper provides a thorough solution to the fundamental problems of linear-quadratic (LQ) control and stabilization for discrete-time mean-field systems under basic assumptions. Firstly, the sufficient and necessary condition for the solvability of mean-field LQ control problem is firstly presented in analytic expression based on the maximum principle developed in this paper, which is compared with the results obtained in literatures where only operator type solvability conditions were given. The optimal controller is given in terms of a coupled Riccati equation which is derived from the solution to forward and backward stochastic difference equation (FBSDE). Secondly, the sufficient and necessary stabilization conditions are explored. It is shown that, under exactly observability assumption, the mean-field system is stabilizable in mean square sense if and only if a coupled algebraic Riccati equation (ARE) has a unique solution $P$ and $\bar{P}$ satisfying $P>0$ and $P+\bar{P}>0$. Furthermore, under the exactly detectability assumption, which is a weaker assumption than exactly observability, we show that the mean-field system is stabilizable in mean square sense if and only if the coupled ARE has a unique solution $P$ and $\bar{P}$ satisfying $P\geq 0$ and $P+\bar{P}\geq 0$. The key techniques adopted in this paper are the maximum principle and the solution to the FBSDE obtained in this paper. The derived results in this paper forms the basis to solve the mean-field control problem for continuous-time systems and other related problems.

A New Distributed Localization Method for Sensor Networks

This paper studies the problem of determining the sensor locations in a large sensor network using relative distance (range) measurements only. Our work follows from a seminal paper by Khan et al. [1] where a distributed algorithm, known as DILOC, for sensor localization is given using the barycentric coordinate. A main limitation of the DILOC algorithm is that all sensor nodes must be inside the convex hull of the anchor nodes. In this paper, we consider a general sensor network without the convex hull assumption, which incurs challenges in determining the sign pattern of the barycentric coordinate. A criterion is developed to address this issue based on available distance measurements. Also, a new distributed algorithm is proposed to guarantee the asymptotic localization of all localizable sensor nodes.
