Perfect diffraction metagratings supporting bound states in the continuum and exceptional points

Resonance coupling in non-Hermitian systems can lead to exotic features, such as bound states in the continuum (BICs) and exceptional points (EPs), which have been widely employed to control the propagation and scattering of light. Yet, similar tools to control diffraction and engineering spatial wavefronts have remained elusive. Here, we show that, by operating a suitably tailored metagrating around a BIC and EPs, it is possible to achieve an extreme degree of control over coupling to different diffraction orders in metasurfaces. We stack subwavelength metallic slit arrays on a metal-insulator-metal waveguide, enabling a careful control of the coupling between localized and guided modes. By periodically tuning the coupling strength from weak to strong, we largely tailor the overall spectrum and enable the emergence of singular features, like BICs and EPs. Perfect unitary diffraction efficiency with large spectrum selectivity is achieved around these singular features, with promising applications for arbitrary wavefront shaping combined with filtering and sensing.

Photonics of Time-Varying Media

Time-varying media have recently emerged as a new paradigm for wave manipulation, thanks to thesynergy between the discovery of novel, highly nonlinear materials, such as epsilon-near-zero materials, and the questfor novel wave applications, such as magnet-free nonreciprocity, multi-mode light shaping, and ultrafast switching. Inthis review we provide a comprehensive discussion of the recent progress achieved with photonic metamaterials whoseproperties stem from their modulation in time. We review the basic concepts underpinning temporal switching and itsrelation with spatial scattering, and deploy the resulting insight to review photonic time-crystals and their emergentresearch avenues such as topological and non-Hermitian physics. We then extend our discussion to account for spa-tiotemporal modulation and its applications to nonreciprocity, synthetic motion, giant anisotropy, amplification andother effects. Finally, we conclude with a review of the most attractive experimental avenues recently demonstrated, and provide a few perspectives on emerging trends for future implementations of time-modulation in photonics.

Virtual Parity-Time Symmetry

Parity-time (PT) symmetry has been opening exciting opportunities in optics, yet the required careful balance of loss and gain has been hindering its practical implementations. Here, we propose a gain-free route to PT-symmetry based on non-monochromatic excitations that mimic loss and gain in passive systems. Based on the concept of virtual absorption, extended here to implement also virtual gain, we induce PT-symmetry and its landmark effects, such as broken phase transitions, anisotropic transmission resonances and laser-absorber pairs, in a fully passive, hence inherently stable, system. These results open a path to establish PT-symmetric phenomena in purely passive platforms.

Half-period Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in disordered rotating optical ring cavities

There exists an analogy between Maxwell equations in a rotating frame and Schrödinger equation for a charged particle in the presence of a magnetic field. We exploit this analogy to point out that electromagnetic phenomena in the rotating frame, under appropriate conditions, can exhibit periodicity with respect to the angular velocity of rotation. In particular, in disordered ring cavities one finds the optical analog of the Al'tshuler-Aronov-Spivak effect well known in mesoscopic physics of disordered metals.

Low-Temperature Linear Thermal Rectifiers Based on Coriolis forces

We demonstrate that a three-terminal harmonic symmetric chain in the presence of a Coriolis force, produced by a rotating platform which is used to place the chain, can produce thermal rectification. The direction of heat flow is reconfigurable and controlled by the angular velocity $Ω$ of the rotating platform. A simple three terminal triangular lattice is used to demonstrate the proposed principle.

Interference of sound waves in a moving fluid

We investigate sound propagation in a moving fluid confined in a randomly corrugated tube. For weak randomness and small fluid velocities $v^{(0)}$, the localization length $ξ$ shows extreme sensitivity to the variation of $v^{(0)}$. In the opposite limit of large fluid velocities, $ξ$ acquires a constant value which is independent of the frequency of the incident sound wave, the degree of randomness and $v^{(0)}$ itself. Finally, we find that the standard deviation $σ_{\ln T}$ of the logarithm of transmittance $\ln(T)$ is a universal function of the ensemble average $\langle \ln T\rangle $, which is not affected by the fluid velocity.

A Concept of Linear Thermal Circulator Based on Coriolis forces

We show that the presence of a Coriolis force in a rotating linear lattice imposes a non-reciprocal propagation of the phononic heat carriers. Using this effect we propose the concept of Coriolis linear thermal circulator which can control the circulation of a heat current. A simple model of three coupled harmonic masses on a rotating platform allow us to demonstrate giant circulating rectification effects for moderate values of the angular velocities of the platform.

Exchange fluctuation theorem for heat transport between multi-terminal harmonic systems

We study full counting statistics for transferred heat and entropy production between multi-terminal systems in absence of a finite junction. The systems are modelled as collections of coupled harmonic oscillators which are kept at different equilibrium temperatures and are connected via arbitrary time dependent couplings. Following consistent quantum framework and two-time measurement concept we obtain analytical expressions for the generalized cumulant generating function. We discuss transient and steady-state fluctuation theorems for the transferred quantities. We also address the effect of coupling strength on the exchange fluctuation theorem.

Thermal Transport in Phononic Cayley Tree Networks

We analytically investigate the heat current $I$ and its thermal fluctuations $Δ$ in a branching network without loops (Cayley tree). The network consists of two type of harmonic masses: vertex masses $M$ placed at the branching points where phononic scattering occurs and masses $m$ at the bonds between branching points where phonon propagation take place. The network is coupled to thermal reservoirs consisting of one-dimensional harmonic chains of coupled masses $m$. Due to impedance missmatching phenomena, both ${\cal I}$ and $Δ$, are non-monotonic functions of the mass ratio $μ=M/m$. In particular, there are cases where they are strictly zero below some critical value $μ^*$.

Cumulants of heat transfer across nonlinear quantum systems

We consider thermal conduction across a general nonlinear phononic junction. Based on two-time observation protocol and the field theoretical/algebraic method, the cumulants of the heat transferred in both transient and steady-state regimes are studied on an equal footing, and practical formulae for the calculation of the cumulant generating function of heat transfer are obtained. As an application, the developed general formalism is used to study anharmonic effects on fluctuation of steady-state heat transfer across a single-site junction with a quartic nonlinear on-site pinning potential. An explicit nonlinear modification to cumulant generating function exact up to the first order is given, in which Gallavotti-Cohen fluctuation symmetry is verified. Numerically a self-consistent procedure is introduced, which works well for strong nonlinearity.

Nonequilibrium Green's function method for quantum thermal transport

This review deals with the nonequilibrium Green's function (NEGF) method applied to the problems of energy transport due to atomic vibrations (phonons), primarily for small junction systems. We present a pedagogical introduction to the subject, deriving some of the well-known results such as the Laudauer-like formula for heat current in ballistic systems. The main aim of the review is to build the machinery of the method so that it can be applied to other situations, which are not directly treated here. In addition to the above, we consider a number of applications of NEGF, not in routine model system calculations, but in a few new aspects showing the power and usefulness of the formalism. In particular, we discuss the problems of multiple leads, coupled left-right-lead system, and system without a center. We also apply the method to the problem of full counting statistics. In the case of nonlinear systems, we make general comments on the thermal expansion effect, phonon relaxation time, and a certain class of mean-field approximations. Lastly, we examine the relationship between NEGF, reduced density matrix, and master equation approaches to thermal transport.

Work distribution under continuous quantum histories

We present a general scheme to obtain work distribution in closed systems under continuous quantum histories of corresponding "power" operator. The scheme is tested by analytically calculating the quantum work distribution for a prototype model of a center-shifted one-dimensional quantum harmonic oscillator. Furthermore, its relationship to the path integral formalism with the Wick rotation is immediately noticed. We find that, based on the continuous measurement, generally Jarzynski equality in quantum regime is not valid, though it is recovered in high-temperature limit. Also we briefly explore the extension to open systems, in which the work done and heat transfer can be calculated in the same set of quantum histories. Our results for this model can be directly verified by single-molecule force spectroscopy.

A generalized Caroli formula for transmission coefficient with lead-lead coupling

We present a generalized transmission coefficient formula for the lead-junction-lead system, in which interaction between the leads has been taken into account. Based on it the Caroli formula could be easily recovered and a transmission coefficient formula for interface problem in the ballistic system can be obtained. The condition of validity for the formula is carefully explored. We mainly focus on heat transport. However, the corresponding electrical transport could be similarly dealt with. Also, an illustrative example is given to clarify the precise meaning of the quantities used in the formula, such as the concept of the reduced interacting matrix in different situations. In addition, an explicit transmission coefficient formula for a general one-dimensional interface setup is obtained based on the derived interface formula.

Cumulant generating function formula of heat transfer in ballistic system with lead-lead coupling

Based on two-time observation protocol, we consider heat transfer in a given time interval $t_{M}$ in lead-junction-lead system taking coupling between the leads into account. In view of the two-time observation, consistency conditions are carefully verified in our specific family of quantum histories. Furthermore, its implication is briefly explored. Then using nonequilibrium Green's function (NEGF) method, we obtain an exact formula for the cumulant generating function for heat transfer between the two leads valid in both transient and steady-state regimes. Also, a compact formula for the cumulant generating function in the long-time limit is derived, for which the Gallavotti-Cohen (GC) fluctuation symmetry is explicitly verified. In addition, a brief discussion of Di Ventra's trick regarding whether the effect of the repartitioning procedure of the total Hamiltonian on nonequilibium steady-state current fluctuation exists is given. All kinds of properties of nonequilibrium current fluctuations such as the fluctuation theorem in different time regimes could be readily given according to these exact formulas.

Role of the on-site pinning potential in establishing quasi-steady-state conditions of heat transport in finite quantum systems

We study the transport of energy in a finite linear harmonic chain by solving the Heisenberg equation of motion, as well as by using nonequilibrium Green's functions to verify our results. The initial state of the system consists of two separate and finite linear chains that are in their respective equilibriums at different temperatures. The chains are then abruptly attached to form a composite chain. The time evolution of the current from just after switch-on to the transient regime and then to later times is determined numerically. We expect the current to approach a steady-state value at later times. Surprisingly, this is possible only if a nonzero quadratic on-site pinning potential is applied to each particle in the chain. If there is no on-site potential a recurrent phenomenon appears when the time scale is longer than the traveling time of sound to make a round trip from the midpoint to a chain edge and then back. Analytic expressions for the transient and steady-state currents are derived to further elucidate the role of the on-site potential.

Transient behavior of full counting statistics in thermal transport

The generating function of energy counting statistics is derived for phononic junction systems. It is expressed in terms of the contour-ordered self-energy of the lead with shifted arguments, $Σ^A(τ, τ') = Σ_L\bigl(τ+\hbar x(τ), τ' + \hbar x(τ')\bigr) - Σ_L(τ, τ')$, where $Σ_L(τ,τ')$ is the usual contour-ordered self-energy of the left lead. The cumulants of the energy transferred in a given time $t_M$ from the lead to the center is obtained by taking derivatives. A transient result of the first four cumulants of a graphene junction is presented. It is found that measurements cause the energy to flow into the lead.
