Quantum coherence and spin nematic to nematic quantum phase transitions in biquadratic spin-1 and -2 XY chains with rhombic single-ion anisotropy

We investigate quantum phase transitions and quantum coherence in infinite biquadratic spin-1 and -2 XY chains with rhombic single-ion anisotropy. All considered coherence measures such as the $l_1$ norm of coherence, the relative entropy of coherence, and the quantum Jensen-Shannon divergence, and the quantum mutual information show consistently that singular behaviors occur for the spin-1 system, which enables to identity quantum phase transitions. For the spin-2 system, the relative entropy of coherence and the quantum mutual information properly detect no singular behavior in the whole system parameter range, while the $l_1$ norm of coherence and the quantum Jensen-Shannon divergence show a conflicting singular behavior of their first-order derivatives. Examining local magnetic moments and spin quadrupole moments lead to the explicit identification of novel orderings of spin quadrupole moments with zero magnetic moments in the whole parameter space. We find the three uniaxial spin nematic quadrupole phases for the spin-1 system and the two biaxial spin nematic phases for the spin-2 system. For the spin-2 system, the two orthogonal biaxial spin nematic states are connected adiabatically without an explicit phase transition, which can be called quantum crossover. The quantum crossover region is estimated by using the quantum fidelity. Whereas for the spin-1 system, the two discontinuous quantum phase transitions occur between three distinct uniaxial spin nematic phases. We discuss the quantum coherence measures and the quantum mutual information in connection with the quantum phase transitions including the quantum crossover.

Some ground-state expectation values for the free parafermion Z(N) spin chain

We consider the calculation of ground-state expectation values for the non-Hermitian Z(N) spin chain described by free parafermions. For N=2 the model reduces to the quantum Ising chain in a transverse field with open boundary conditions. Use is made of the Hellmann-Feynman theorem to obtain exact results for particular single site and nearest-neighbour ground-state expectation values for general N which are valid for sites deep inside the chain. These results are tested numerically for N=3, along with how they change as a function of distance from the boundary.

Symmetry-protected trivial phases and quantum phase transitions in an anisotropic antiferromagnetic spin-1 biquadratic model

The ground state phase diagram is obtained for an antiferromagnetic spin-1 anisotropic biquadratic model. With the help of symmetry and duality transformations, three symmetry-protected trivial phases and one dimerized symmetry breaking phase are found. Local and nonlocal order parameters are identified to characterize these phases. Quantum phase transitions between the symmetry-protected trivial phases belong to the Gaussian universality class with central charge c = 1, and quantum phase transitions from the symmetry-protected trivial phases to the dimerized phase belong to the Ising universality class with central charge c = 1/2. In addition, the model admits three characteristic lines of factorized ground states, which are located in the symmetry-protected trivial phases instead of a symmetry breaking phase, in sharp contrast to other known cases.

Duality and ground-state phase diagram for the quantum XYZ model with arbitrary spin $s$ in one spatial dimension

Five duality transformations are unveiled for the quantum XYZ model with arbitrary spin $s$ in one spatial dimension. The presence of these duality transformations drastically reduces the entire ground-state phase diagram to two {\it finite} regimes - the principal regimes, with all the other ten regimes dual to them. Combining with the determination of critical points from the conventional order parameter approach and/or the fidelity approach to quantum phase transitions, we are able to map out the ground-state phase diagram for the quantum XYZ model with arbitrary spin $s$. This is explicitly demonstrated for $s=1/2,1,3/2$ and 2. As it turns out, all the critical points, with central charge $c=1$, are self-dual under a respective duality transformation for half-integer as well as integer spin $s$. However, in the latter case, the presence of the so-called symmetry protected topological phase, i.e., the Haldane phase, results in extra lines of critical points with central charge $c=1/2$, which is not self-dual under any duality transformation.

Energy landscape and conical intersection points of the driven Rabi model

We examine the energy surfaces of the driven Rabi model, also known as the biased or generalised Rabi model, as a function of the coupling strength and the driving term. The energy surfaces are plotted numerically from the known analytic solution. The resulting energy landscape consists of an infinite stack of sheets connected by conical intersection points located at the degenerate Juddian points in the eigenspectrum. Trajectories encircling these points are expected to exhibit a nonzero geometric phase.

Integrability vs exact solvability in the quantum Rabi and Dicke models

The Rabi model describes the simplest interaction between light and matter via a two-level quantum system interacting with a bosonic field. We demonstrate that the fully quantised version of the Rabi model is integrable in the Yang-Baxter sense at two parameter values. The model is argued to be not Yang-Baxter integrable in general. This is in contrast to the claim that the quantum Rabi model is integrable based on a phenomenological criterion of quantum integrability not presupposing the existence of a set of commuting operators. Similar Yang-Baxter integrable points are identified for the generalised Rabi model and the fully quantised Dicke model. The integrable points have particular implications for the level statistics of the Dicke model.

The antiferromagnetic cross-coupled spin ladder: quantum fidelity and tensor networks approach

We investigate the phase diagram of the cross-coupled Heisenberg spin ladder with antiferromagnetic couplings. For this model there have been conflicting results for the existence of the columnar dimer phase, which was predicted on the basis of weak coupling field theory renormalisation group arguments. The numerical work on this model has been based on various approaches, including exact diagonalization, series expansions and density-matrix renormalization group calculations. Using the recently developed tensor network states and ground-state fidelity approach for quantum spin ladders we find no evidence for the existence of the columnar dimer phase. We also provide an argument based on the symmetry of the Hamiltonian which suggests that the phase diagram for antiferromagnetic couplings consists of a single line separating the rung-singlet and Haldane phases.

Degenerate groundstates and multiple bifurcations in a two-dimensional q-state quantum Potts model

We numerically investigate the two-dimensional q-state quantum Potts model on the infinite square lattice by using the infinite projected entangled-pair state (iPEPS) algorithm. We show that the quantum fidelity, defined as an overlap measurement between an arbitrary reference state and the iPEPS groundstate of the system, can detect q-fold degenerate groundstates for the Zq broken-symmetry phase. Accordingly, a multiple-bifurcation of the quantum groundstate fidelity is shown to occur as the transverse magnetic field varies from the symmetry phase to the broken-symmetry phase, which means that a multiple-bifurcation point corresponds to a critical point. A (dis-)continuous behavior of quantum fidelity at phase transition points characterizes a (dis-)continuous phase transition. Similar to the characteristic behavior of the quantum fidelity, the magnetizations, as order parameters, obtained from the degenerate groundstates exhibit multiple bifurcation at critical points. Each order parameter is also explicitly demonstrated to transform under the subgroup of the Zq symmetry group. We find that the q-state quantum Potts model on the square lattice undergoes a discontinuous (first-order) phase transition for q = 3 and q = 4, and a continuous phase transition for q = 2 (the 2D quantum transverse Ising model).

Universal Order Parameters and Quantum Phase Transitions: A Finite-Size Approach

We propose a method to construct universal order parameters for quantum phase transitions in many-body lattice systems. The method exploits the $H$-orthogonality of a few near-degenerate lowest states of the Hamiltonian describing a given finite-size system, which makes it possible to perform finite-size scaling and take full advantage of currently available numerical algorithms. An explicit connection is established between the fidelity per site between two $H$-orthogonal states and the energy gap between the ground state and low-lying excited states in the finite-size system. The physical information encoded in this gap arising from finite-size fluctuations clarifies the origin of the universal order parameter. We demonstrate the procedure for the one-dimensional quantum formulation of the $q$-state Potts model, for $q=2,3,4$ and 5, as prototypical examples, using finite-size data obtained from the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) algorithm.

Non-local correlations in the Haldane phase for an XXZ spin-1 chain: A perspective from infinite matrix product state representation

String correlations are investigated in an infinite-size XXZ spin-1 chain. By using the infinite matrix product state representation, we calculate a long-range string order. In the XY phase, the string correlations decay within a relatively very large lattice distance, which makes a finite-size study difficult to verify the non-existence of the string order. Thus, in the Haldane phase, the non-vanishing string correlations in the limit of a very large distance allow to characterize the phase boundaries to the XY phase and the Neel phase, which implies that the transverse long-range string order is the order parameter for the Haldane phase. In addition, the singular behaviors of the von Neumann entropy and the fidelity per lattice site are shown to capture clearly the phase transition points that are consistent with the results from the string order. The estimated critical points including a BKT transition from the XY phase to the Haldane phase agree well with the previous results: $Δ_{c2} = 0$ for the XY-Haldane phase transition and $Δ_{c3} = 1.185$ for the Haldane-N'eel phase transition from the density renormalization group. From a finite-entanglement scaling of the von Neumann entropy with respect to the truncation dimension, the central charges are found to be $c \simeq 1.0$ at $Δ_{c2} = 0$ and $c \simeq 0.5$ at $Δ_{c3} = 1.185$, respectively, which shows that the XY-Haldane phase transition at $Δ_{c2} = 0$ belongs to the Heisenberg universality class, while the Haldane-Neel phase transition at $Δ_{c2} = 1.185$ belongs to the two-dimensional classical Ising universality class. It is also shown that, the long-range order parameters and the von Neumann entropy, as well as the fidelity per site approach, can be applied to characterize quantum phase transitions as a universal phase transition indicator for one-dimensional lattice many-body systems.

An efficient computation of geometric entanglement for two-dimensional quantum lattice systems

The geometric entanglement per lattice site, as a holistic measure of the multipartite entanglement, serves as a universal marker to detect quantum phase transitions in quantum many-body systems. However, it is very difficult to compute the geometric entanglement due to the fact that it involves a complicated optimization over all the possible separable states. In this paper, we propose a systematic method to efficiently compute the geometric entanglement per lattice site for quantum many-body lattice systems in two spatial dimensions in the context of a newly-developed tensor network algorithm based on an infinite projected entangled pair state representation. It is tested for quantum Ising model in a transverse magnetic field and anisotropic spin 1/2 anti-ferromagnetic XYX model in an external magnetic field on an infinite-size square lattice. In addition, the geometric entanglement per lattice site is able to detect the so-called factorizing field. Our results are in a quantitative agreement with Quantum Monte Carlo simulations.

Bifurcation in ground-state fidelity and universal order parameter for two-dimensional quantum transverse Ising model

We establish an intriguing connection between quantum phase transitions and bifurcations in the ground-state fidelity per lattice site, and construct the universal order parameter for quantum Ising model in a transverse magnetic field on an infinite-size square lattice in two spatial dimensions, a prototypical model with symmetry breaking order. This is achieved by computing ground-state wave functions in the context of the tensor network algorithm based on the infinite projected entangled-pair state representation. Our finding is applicable to any systems with symmetry breaking order, as a result of the fact that, in the conventional Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson paradigm, a quantum system undergoing a phase transition is characterized in terms of spontaneous symmetry breaking captured by a local order parameter. In addition, a bifurcation in the reduced fidelity between two different reduced density matrices is also discussed.

Bifurcation in ground-state fidelity for a one-dimensional spin model with competing two-spin and three-spin interactions

A one-dimensional quantum spin model with the competing two-spin and three-spin interactions is investigated in the context of a tensor network algorithm based on the infinite matrix product state representation. The algorithm is an adaptation of Vidal's infinite time-evolving block decimation algorithm to a translation-invariant one-dimensional lattice spin system involving three-spin interactions. The ground-state fidelity per lattice site is computed, and its bifurcation is unveiled, for a few selected values of the coupling constants. We succeed in identifying critical points and deriving local order parameters to characterize different phases in the conventional Ginzburg-Landau-Wilson paradigm.

Geometric entanglement from matrix product state representations

An efficient scheme to compute the geometric entanglement per lattice site for quantum many-body systems on a periodic finite-size chain is proposed in the context of a tensor network algorithm based on the matrix product state representations. It is systematically tested for three prototypical critical quantum spin chains, which belong to the same Ising universality class. The simulation results lend strong support to the previous claim [Q.-Q. Shi, R. Orús, J. O. Fjærestad, and H.-Q. Zhou, New J. Phys \textbf{12}, 025008 (2010); J.-M. Stéphan, G. Misguich, and F. Alet, Phys. Rev. B \textbf{82}, 180406R (2010)] that the leading finite-size correction to the geometric entanglement per lattice site is universal, with its remarkable connection to the celebrated Affleck-Ludwig boundary entropy corresponding to a conformally invariant boundary condition.

Ground-State Fidelity and Kosterlitz-Thouless Phase Transition for Spin 1/2 Heisenberg Chain with Next-to-the-Nearest-Neighbor Interaction

The Kosterlitz-Thouless transition for the spin 1/2 Heisenberg chain with the next-to-the-nearest-neighbor interaction is investigated in the context of an infinite matrix product state algorithm, which is a generalization of the infinite time-evolving block decimation algorithm [G. Vidal, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{98}, 070201 (2007)] to accommodate both the next-to-the-nearest-neighbor interaction and spontaneous dimerization. It is found that, in the critical regime, the algorithm automatically leads to infinite degenerate ground-state wave functions, due to the finiteness of the truncation dimension. This results in \textit{pseudo} symmetry spontaneous breakdown, as reflected in a bifurcation in the ground-state fidelity per lattice site. In addition, this allows to introduce a pseudo-order parameter to characterize the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition.

Ground-state fidelity and quantum criticality in a two-leg ladder with cyclic four-spin exchange

We investigate a two-leg Heisenberg spin ladder with cyclic four-spin exchange by exploiting a newly-developed tensor network algorithm. The algorithm allows to efficiently compute the ground-state fidelity per lattice site, which enables us to establish the ground-state phase diagram for quantum lattice many-body systems. The latter is based on the observation that, for an infinite-size system, any singularity on a ground-state fidelity surface characterizes a critical point, at which the system undergoes a phase transition. For the two-leg Heisenberg spin-1/2 ladder with cyclic four-spin exchange, six different phases are identified: the ferromagnetic phase, the rung singlet phase, the staggered dimer phase, the scalar chirality phase, the dominant vector chirality region, and the dominant collinear spin region. Our findings are in a good agreement with the previous studies from the exact diagonalization and the density-matrix renormalization group.

Ground-state fidelity and tensor network states for quantum spin tubes

An efficient algorithm is developed for quantum spin tubes in the context of the tensor network representations. It allows to efficiently compute the ground-state fidelity per lattice site, which in turn enables us to identify quantum critical points, at which quantum spin tubes undergo quantum phase transitions. As an illustration, we investigate the isosceles spin 1/2 antiferromagnetic three-leg Heisenberg tube. Our simulation results suggest that two Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions occur as the degree of asymmetry of the rung interaction is tuned, thus offering an alternative route towards a resolution to the conflicting results on this issue arising from the density matrix renormalization group.

Tensor network states for quantum spin ladders

We have developed an efficient tensor network algorithm for spin ladders, which generates ground-state wave functions for infinite-size quantum spin ladders. The algorithm is able to efficiently compute the ground-state fidelity per lattice site, a universal phase transition marker, thus offering a powerful tool to unveil quantum many-body physics underlying spin ladders. To illustrate our scheme, we consider the two-leg and three-leg Heisenberg spin ladders with staggering dimerization. The ground-state phase diagram thus yielded is reliable, compared with the previous studies based on the density matrix renormalization group. Our results indicate that the ground-state fidelity per lattice site successfully captures quantum criticalities in spin ladders.

Finite-Size Geometric Entanglement from Tensor Network Algorithms

The global geometric entanglement is studied in the context of newly-developed tensor network algorithms for finite systems. For one-dimensional quantum spin systems it is found that, at criticality, the leading finite-size correction to the global geometric entanglement per site behaves as $b/n$, where $n$ is the size of the system and $b$ a given coefficient. Our conclusion is based on the computation of the geometric entanglement per spin for the quantum Ising model in a transverse magnetic field and for the spin-1/2 XXZ model. We also discuss the possibility of coefficient $b$ being universal.

Ground-state phase diagram of the two-dimensional t-J model

The ground-state phase diagram of the two-dimensional t-J model is investigated in the context of the tensor network algorithm in terms of the graded Projected Entangled-Pair State representation of the ground-state wave functions. There is a line of phase separation between the Heisenberg anti-ferromagnetic state without hole and a hole-rich state. For both J=0.4t and J=0.8t, a systematic computation is performed to identify all the competing ground states for various dopings. It is found that, besides a possible Nagaoka's ferromagnetic state, the homogeneous regime consists of four different phases: one phase with charge and spin density wave order coexisting with a p_x (p_y)-wave superconducting state, one phase with the symmetry mixing of d+s-wave superconductivity in the spin-singlet channel and p_x (p_y)-wave superconductivity in the spin-triplet channel in the presence of an anti-ferromagnetic background, one superconducting phase with extended s-wave symmetry, and one superconducting phase with p_x (p_y)-wave symmetry in a ferromagnetic background.

Spontaneous symmetry breaking and bifurcations in ground state fidelity for quantum lattice systems

Spontaneous symmetry breaking occurs in a system when its Hamiltonian possesses a certain symmetry, whereas the ground state wave functions do not preserve it. This provides such a scenario that a bifurcation, which breaks the symmetry, occurs when some control parameter crosses its critical value. It is unveiled that the ground state fidelity per lattice site exhibits such a bifurcation for quantum lattice systems undergoing quantum phase transitions. The significance of this result lies in the fact that the ground state fidelity per lattice site is \textit{universal}, in the sense that it is model-independent, in contrast to (model-dependent) order parameters. This fundamental quantity may be computed by exploiting the newly-developed tensor network algorithms on infinite-size lattices. We illustrate the scheme in terms of the quantum Ising model in a transverse magnetic field and the spin 1/2 XYX model in an external magnetic field on an infinite-size lattice in one spatial dimension.

Gauge Fields, Geometric Phases, and Quantum Adiabatic Pumps

Quantum adiabatic pumping of charge and spin between two reservoirs (leads) has recently been demonstrated in nanoscale electronic devices. Pumping occurs when two or more system parameters are varied in a cyclic manner and sufficiently slowly that the quantum system always remains in its ground state. We show that quantum pumping has a natural geometric representation in terms of gauge fields (both Abelian and non-Abelian) defined on the space of system parameters. We make explicit the similarities and differences with Berry's geometric phase. Tunneling from a scanning tunneling microscope tip through a magnetic atom could be used to demonstrate the non-Abelian character of the gauge field.

Integrability and exact solution for coupled BCS systems associated with the $su(4)$ Lie algebra

We introduce an integrable model for two coupled BCS systems through a solution of the Yang-Baxter equation associated with the Lie algebra $su(4)$. By employing the algebraic Bethe ansatz, we determine the exact solution for the energy spectrum. An asymptotic analysis is conducted to determine the leading terms in the ground state energy, the gap and some one point correlation functions at zero temperature.
