Self-biased SAW Magnetic Field Sensors Based on Angle Dependent Magneto-acoustic Coupling

Surface-acoustic-wave (SAW) based devices have emerged as a promising technology in magnetic field sensing by integrating a magnetostrictive layer with the giant ΔE/ΔG effect. However, almost all SAW magnetic field sensors require a bias field to obtain high sensitivity. In addition, the true nature of magneto-acoustic coupling still presents a major challenge in understanding and designing of this kind of devices. In current work, a dynamic magnetoelastic model for the ΔE/ΔG effect is established in consideration of the important role of the dipole-dipole interaction. The model is also implemented into a FEM software to calculate the resonance frequency responses of multiple fabricated sensors with different ψ angles between of the acoustic wave vector and the induced uniaxial magnetic anisotropy. The measured results are in excellent agreement with the simulated ones. A strong resonance frequency sensitivity (RFS) of 630.4 kHz/Oe was achieved at zero bias field for the device with optimized ψ angle. Furthermore, the RFS measurements along different directions verify its vector-sensing capability.

Spin wave propagation in uniform waveguide: effects, modulation and its application

With the advent of the post-Moore era, researches on beyond-Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) approaches have been attracted more and more attention. Magnonics, or spin wave is one of the most promising technology beyond CMOS, which magnons-quanta for spin waves-process the information analogous to electronic charges in electronics. Information transmission by spin waves, which uses the frequency, amplitude and (or) phase to encode information, has a great many of advantages such as extremely low energy loss and wide-band frequency. Moreover, using the nonlinear characteristics of spin waves for information transmission can increase the extra degree of freedom of information. This review provides a tutorial overview over the effects of spin wave propagation and recent research progress in uniform spin wave waveguide. The propagation characteristics of spin waves in uniform waveguides and some special propagation phenomena such as spin wave beam splitting and self-focusing are described by combining experimental phenomena and theoretical formulas. Furthermore, we summarize methods for modulating propagation of spin wave in uniform waveguide, and comment on the advantages and limitations of these methods. The review may promote the development of information transmission technology based on spin waves.

Ferromagnetic Resonance of a YIG film in the Low Frequency Regime

An improved method for characterizing the magnetic anisotropy of films with cubic symmetry is described and is applied to an yttrium iron garnet (111) film. Analysis of the FMR spectra performed both in-plane and out-of-plane from 0.7 to 8 GHz yielded the magnetic anisotropy constants as well as the saturation magnetization. The field at which FMR is observed turns out to be quite sensitive to anisotropy constants (by more than a factor ten) in the low frequency (< 2 GHz) regime and when the orientation of the magnetic field is nearly normal to the sample plane; the restoring force on the magnetization arising from the magnetocrystalline anisotropy fields is then comparable to that from the external field, thereby allowing the anisotropy constants to be determined with greater accuracy. In this region, unusual dynamical behaviors are observed such as multiple resonances and a switching of FMR resonance with only a 1 degree change in field orientation at 0.7 GHz.

Dynamic control of spin wave spectra using spin-polarized currents

We describe a method of controlling the spin wave spectra dynamically in a uniform nanostripe waveguide through spin-polarized currents. A stable periodic magnetization structure is observed when the current flows vertically through the center of nanostripe waveguide. After being excited, the spin wave is transmitted at the sides of the waveguide. Numerical simulations of spin-wave transmission and dispersion curves reveal a single, pronounced band gap. Moreover, the periodic magnetization structure can be turned on and off by the spin-polarized current. The switching process from full rejection to full transmission takes place within less than 3ns. Thus, this type magnonic waveguide can be utilized for low-dissipation spin wave based filters.

Magnetoelectric surface acoustic wave resonator with ultrahigh magnetic field sensitivity

A magnetoelectric surface acoustic wave (MESAW) type device based on piezoelectric/magnetostrictive heterostructure was proposed to use as weak magnetic field sensor. Unlike conventional magnetoelectric bulk laminates or film stacks collecting magnetic field induced electrical charge, the MESAW detects the shift of the center frequency, which highly depends on the magnetic field due to the giant delta E effect and the phase velocity dispersion. The magnetic field sensitivity can reach 10^(-11) Tesla in consideration of 100 Hz frequency accuracy. Additionally, the unique working mechanism of MESAW allows a broadband detection of weak magnetic field even with no bias magnetic field.
