3D Diffusion MRI Using Simultaneous Multi-slab with Blipped-CAIPI (Blipped-SMSlab) in a 4D K-space Framework

Purpose: To develop an efficient simultaneous multi-slab imaging method with blipped-controlled aliasing in parallel imaging (blipped-SMSlab) in a 4D k-space framework, and demonstrate its efficacy in high-resolution diffusion MRI (dMRI). Theory and Methods: First, the SMSlab 4D k-space signal expression is formulated, and the phase interferences from intra-slab and inter-slab encodings on the same physical z axis are analyzed. Then, the blipped-SMSlab dMRI sequence is designed, with blipped-CAIPI gradients for inter-slab encoding, and a 2D multi-band accelerated navigator for inter-kz-shot phase correction. Third, strategies are developed to remove the phase interferences, by RF phase modulation and/or phase correction during reconstruction, thus decoupling intra-slab and inter-slab encodings that are otherwise entangled. In vivo experiments are performed to validate the blipped-SMSlab method, and preliminarily evaluate its performance in high-resolution dMRI compared with traditional 2D imaging. Results: In the 4D k-space framework, inter-slab and intra-slab phase interferences of blipped-SMSlab are successfully removed using the proposed strategies. Compared with non-CAIPI sampling, the blipped-SMSlab acquisition reduces the g-factor and g-factor-related SNR penalty by about 12%. In addition, in vivo experiments show the SNR advantage of blipped-SMSlab dMRI over traditional 2D dMRI for 1.3 and 1.0 mm isotropic resolution imaging with matched acquisition time. Conclusion: Removing inter-slab and intra-slab phase interferences enables SMSlab dMRI with blipped-CAIPI in a 4D k-space framework. The proposed blipped-SMSlab dMRI is demonstrated to be more SNR-efficient than 2D dMRI and thus capable of high-quality, high-resolution fiber orientation detection.

A New Method of Construction of Permutation Trinomials with Coefficients 1

Permutation polynomials over finite fields are an interesting and constantly active research subject of study for many years. They have important applications in areas of mathematics and engineering. In recent years, permutation binomials and permutation trinomials attract people's interests due to their simple algebraic forms. In this paper, by reversely using Tu's method for the characterization of permutation polynomials with exponents of Niho type, we propose a new method to construct permutation trinomials with coefficients 1. Moreover, we give the explicit compositional inverses of a class of permutation trinomials for a special case.

New classes of permutation polynomials with coefficients 1 over finite fields

Permutation polynomials with coefficients 1 over finite fields attract researchers' interests due to their simple algebraic form. In this paper, we first construct four classes of fractional permutation polynomials over the cyclic subgroup of $ \mathbb{F}_{2^{2m}} $. From these permutation polynomials, three new classes of permutation polynomials with coefficients 1 over $ \mathbb{F}_{2^{2m}} $ are constructed, and three more general new classes of permutation polynomials with coefficients 1 over $ \mathbb{F}_{2^{2m}} $ are constructed using a new method we presented recently. Some known permutation polynomials are the special cases of our new permutation polynomials. Furthermore, we prove that, in all new permutation polynomials, there exists a permutation polynomial which is EA-inequivalent to known permutation polynomials for all even positive integer $ m $. This proof shows that EA-inequivalent permutation polynomials over $ \mathbb{F}_{q} $ can be constructed from EA-equivalent permutation polynomials over the cyclic subgroup of $ \mathbb{F}_{q} $. From this proof, it is obvious that, in all new permutation polynomials, there exists a permutation polynomial of which algebraic degree is the maximum algebraic degree of permutation polynomials over $ \mathbb{F}_{2^{2m}} $.

Potential Energy Landscape of CO Adsorbates on NaCl(100) and Implications in Isomerization of Vibrationally Excited CO

Several full-dimensional potential energy surfaces (PESs) are reported for vibrating CO adsorbates at two coverages on a rigid NaCl(100) surface based on first principles calculations. These PESs reveal a rather flat energy landscape for physisorption of vibrationless CO on NaCl(100), evidenced by various C-down adsorption patterns within a small energy range. Agreement with available experimental results is satisfactory, although quantitative differences exist. These PESs are used to explore isomerization pathways between the C-down and higher energy O-down configurations, which reveal a significant isomerization barrier. As CO vibration is excited, however, the energy order of the two isomer changes, which helps to explain the experimental observed flipping of vibrationally excited CO adsorbates.

Stereodynamic control of overlapping resonances in cold molecular collisions

Stereodynamic control of resonant molecular collisions has emerged as a new frontier in cold molecule research. Recent experimental studies have focused on weakly interacting molecular systems such as HD collisions with H$_2$, D$_2$ and He. We report here the possibility of such control in strongly interacting systems taking rotational relaxation in cold collisions of HCl and H$_2$. Using explicit quantum scattering calculations in full six dimensions it is shown that robust control of the collision dynamics is possible even when multiple (overlapping) shape-resonances coexist in a narrow energy range, indicating that cold stereochemistry offers great promise for many molecules beyond simple systems. We demonstrate a striking case where two prominent peaks in overlapping resonances are switched-off simultaneously by suitable alignment of the HCl molecule.

The ortho-to-para ratio of interstellar NH$_2$: Quasi-classical trajectory calculations and new simulations

Based on recent $Herschel$ results, the ortho-to-para ratio (OPR) of NH$_2$ has been measured towards the following high-mass star-forming regions: W31C (G10.6-0.4), W49N (G43.2-0.1), W51 (G49.5-0.4), and G34.3+0.1. The OPR at thermal equilibrium ranges from the statistical limit of three at high temperatures to infinity as the temperature tends toward zero, unlike the case of H$_{2}$. Depending on the position observed along the lines-of-sight, the OPR was found to lie either slightly below the high temperature limit of three (in the range $2.2-2.9$) or above this limit ($\sim3.5$, $\gtrsim 4.2$, and $\gtrsim 5.0$). In low temperature interstellar gas, where the H$_{2}$ is para-enriched, our nearly pure gas-phase astrochemical models with nuclear-spin chemistry can account for anomalously low observed NH$_2$-OPR values. We have tentatively explained OPR values larger than three by assuming that spin thermalization of NH$_2$ can proceed at least partially by H-atom exchange collisions with atomic hydrogen, thus increasing the OPR with decreasing temperature. In this paper, we present quasi-classical trajectory calculations of the H-exchange reaction NH$_2$ + H, which show the reaction to proceed without a barrier, confirming that the H-exchange will be efficient in the temperature range of interest. With the inclusion of this process, our models suggest both that OPR values below three arise in regions with temperatures $\gtrsim20-25$~K, depending on time, and values above three but lower than the thermal limit arise at still lower temperatures.

Thickness-Dependent and Magnetic-Field-Driven Suppression of Antiferromagnetic Order in Thin V$_{5}$S$_{8}$ Single Crystals

With materials approaching the 2d limit yielding many exciting systems with intriguing physical properties and promising technological functionalities, understanding and engineering magnetic order in nanoscale, layered materials is generating keen interest. One such material is V$_{5}$S$_{8}$, a metal with an antiferromagnetic ground state below the Néel temperature $T_{N} \sim$ 32 K and a prominent spin-flop signature in the magnetoresistance (MR) when $H||c \sim$ 4.2 T. Here we study nanoscale-thickness single crystals of V$_{5}$S$_{8}$, focusing on temperatures close to $T_{N}$ and the evolution of material properties in response to systematic reduction in crystal thickness. Transport measurements just below $T_{N}$ reveal magnetic hysteresis that we ascribe to a metamagnetic transition, the first-order magnetic field-driven breakdown of the ordered state. The reduction of crystal thickness to $\sim$ 10 nm coincides with systematic changes in the magnetic response: $T_{N}$ falls, implying that antiferromagnetism is suppressed; and while the spin-flop signature remains, the hysteresis disappears, implying that the metamagnetic transition becomes second order as the thickness approaches the 2d limit. This work demonstrates that single crystals of magnetic materials with nanometer thicknesses are promising systems for future studies of magnetism in reduced dimensionality and quantum phase transitions.

Direct Evidence for the Dirac-Cone Topological Surface States in Ternary Chalcogenide TlBiSe2

We have performed high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on TlBiSe2, which is a member of the ternary chalcogenides theoretically proposed as candidates for a new class of three-dimensional topological insulators. By measuring the energy band dispersions over the entire surface Brillouin zone, we found a direct evidence for a non-trivial surface metallic state showing a X-shaped energy dispersion within the bulk band gap. The present result unambiguously establishes that TlBiSe2 is a strong topological insulator with a single Dirac cone at the Brillouin-zone center. The observed bulk band gap of 0.4 eV is the largest among known topological insulators, making TlBiSe2 the most promising material for studying room-temperature topological phenomena.
