Electric field switching of altermagnetic spin-splitting in multiferroic skyrmions

Magnetic skyrmions are localized magnetic structures that retain their shape and stability over time, thanks to their topological nature. Recent theoretical and experimental progress has laid the groundwork for understanding magnetic skyrmions characterized by negligible net magnetization and ultrafast dynamics. Notably, skyrmions emerging in materials with altermagnetism, a novel magnetic phase featuring lifted Kramers degeneracy-have remained unreported until now. In this study, we demonstrate that BiFeO3, a multiferroic renowned for its strong coupling between ferroelectricity and magnetism, can transit from a spin cycloid to a Neel-type skyrmion under antidamping spin-orbit torque at room temperature. Strikingly, the altermagnetic spin splitting within BiFeO3 skyrmion can be reversed through the application of an electric field, revealed via the Circular photogalvanic effect. This quasiparticle, which possesses a neutral topological charge, holds substantial promise for diverse applications-most notably, enabling the development of unconventional computing systems with low power consumption and magnetoelectric controllability.

Observation of magnon torques mediated by orbital hybridization at the light metal/antiferromagnetic insulator interface

Magnon torques, which can operate without involving moving electrons, could circumvent the Joule heating issue. In conventional magnon torque systems, the spin source layer with strong spin-orbit coupling is utilized to inject magnons, and the efficiency is limited by the inherent spin Hall conductivity of the spin source layer. In this work, we observe magnon torques in the Cr/NiO/ferromagnet heterostructure with the effective spin Hall conductivity of 2.45x10^5 hbar/(2eΩm), twice that of the best conventional magnon torque system. We demonstrate the magnon-torque-driven switching of a perpendicularly magnetized CoFeB layer at room temperature, with a switching power consumption density of 0.136 mW/μm^2. We find that the magnon torque originates from the orbital hybridization and interfacial inversion symmetry breaking at the Cr/NiO interface. Our findings not only significantly enhance the efficiency of magnon torques, but also provide key insights into the fundamental mechanisms of magnon injections.

Controllable anomalous Nernst effect in an antiperovskite antiferromagnet

Anomalous Nernst effect (ANE), the generation of a transverse electric voltage by a longitudinal temperature gradient, has attracted increasing interests of researchers recently, due to its potential in the thermoelectric power conversion and close relevance to the Berry curvature of the band structure. Avoiding the stray field of ferromagnets, ANE in antiferromagnets (AFM) has the advantage of realizing highly efficient and densely integrated thermopiles. Here, we report the observation of ANE in an antiperovskite noncollinear AFM Mn3SnN experimentally, which is triggered by the enhanced Berry curvature from Weyl points located close to the Fermi level. Considering that antiperovskite Mn3SnN has rich magnetic phase transition, we modulate the noncollinear AFM configurations by the biaxial strain, which enables us to control its ANE. Our findings provide a potential class of materials to explore the Weyl physics of noncollinear AFM as well as realizing antiferromagnetic spin caloritronics that exhibits promising prospects for energy conversion and information processing.

Observation of spin splitting torque in a collinear antiferromagnet RuO2

Current-induced spin torques provide efficient data writing approaches for magnetic memories. Recently, the spin splitting torque (SST) was theoretically predicted (R. González-Hernández et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 126, 127701 (2021)), which combines advantages of conventional spin transfer torque (STT) and spin-orbit torque (SOT) as well as enables controllable spin polarization. Here we provide the experimental evidence of SST in collinear antiferromagnet RuO2 films. The spin current direction is found to be correlated to the crystal orientation of RuO2 and the spin polarization direction is dependent on (parallel to) the Néel vector. These features are quite characteristic for the predicted SST. Our finding not only present a new member for the spin torques besides traditional STT and SOT, but also proposes a promising spin source RuO2 for spintronics.

Cluster magnetic octupole induced out-of-plane spin polarization in antiperovskite antiferromagnet

Out-of-plane spin polarization σ_z has attracted increasing interests of researchers recently, due to its potential in high-density and low-power spintronic devices. Noncollinear antiferromagnet (AFM), which has unique 120° triangular spin configuration, has been discovered to possess σ_z. However, the physical origin of σ_z in noncollinear AFM is still not clear, and the external magnetic field-free switching of perpendicular magnetic layer using the corresponding σ_z has not been reported yet. Here, we use the cluster magnetic octupole in antiperovskite AFM Mn3SnN to demonstrate the generation of σ_z. σ_z is induced by the precession of carrier spins when currents flow through the cluster magnetic octupole, which also relies on the direction of the cluster magnetic octupole in conjunction with the applied current. With the aid of σ_z, current induced spin-orbit torque (SOT) switching of adjacent perpendicular ferromagnet is realized without external magnetic field. Our findings present a new perspective to the generation of out-of-plane spin polarizations via noncollinear AFM spin structure, and provide a potential path to realize ultrafast high-density applications.

Magnon-mediated interlayer coupling in an all-antiferromagnetic junction

The interlayer coupling mediated by fermions in ferromagnets brings about parallel and anti-parallel magnetization orientations of two magnetic layers, resulting in the giant magnetoresistance, which forms the foundation in spintronics and accelerates the development of information technology. However, the interlayer coupling mediated by another kind of quasi-particle, boson, is still lacking. Here we demonstrate such a static interlayer coupling at room temperature in an antiferromagnetic junction Fe2O3/Cr2O3/Fe2O3, where the two antiferromagnetic Fe2O3 layers are functional materials and the antiferromagnetic Cr2O3 layer serves as a spacer. The Néel vectors in the top and bottom Fe2O3 are strongly orthogonally coupled, which is bridged by a typical bosonic excitation (magnon) in the Cr2O3 spacer. Such an orthogonally coupling exceeds the category of traditional collinear interlayer coupling via fermions in ground state, reflecting the fluctuating nature of the magnons, as supported by our magnon quantum well model. Besides the fundamental significance on the quasi-particle-mediated interaction, the strong coupling in an antiferromagnetic magnon junction makes it a realistic candidate for practical antiferromagnetic spintronics and magnonics with ultrahigh-density integration.

Current-induced magnetization switching in CoTb amorphous single layer

We demonstrate spin-orbit torque (SOT) switching of amorphous CoTb single layer films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA). The switching sustains even the film thickness is above 10 nm, where the critical switching current density keeps almost constant. Without the need of overcoming the strong interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction caused by the heavy metal, a quite low assistant field of ~20 Oe is sufficient to realize the fully switching. The SOT effective field decreases and undergoes a sign change with the decrease of the Tb-concentration, implying that a combination of the spin Hall effect from both Co and Tb as well as an asymmetric spin current absorption accounts for the SOT switching mechanism. Our findings would advance the use of magnetic materials with bulk PMA for energy-efficient and thermal-stable non-volatile memories, and add a different dimension for understanding the ordering and asymmetry in amorphous thin films.

Suggested quasi Cassegrain system for multi-beam observation of FAST

FAST, the largest single-dish radio telescope in the world, has a 500-meter diameter main reflector and a 300-meter diameter illumination area. It has a shape variable main reflector, which changes the shape of the illuminated area in the main reflector into a paraboloid continuously. In this article, we propose a quasi Cassegrain system to FAST. The detailed design results are given in this paper. Such a quasi Cassegrain system only needs to add a 14.6-meter diameter secondary reflector, which is close to the size of the feed cabin, the distance from the secondary reflector to the focus is only 5.08-meter, and it has excellent image quality. In this quasi Cassegrain system the shape of the illuminated area in the main reflector continuously changes into an optimized hyperboloid. Using this quasi Cassegrain system from frequency 0.5 G to 8 G, the multi-beam system can include 7 to 217 feeds. If this system is used in combination with PAF technology, more multi-beam feeds can be used.

Giant Linear Magneto-resistance in Nonmagnetic PtBi2

We synthesized nonmagnetic PtBi$_2$ single crystals and observed a giant linear magneto-resistance (MR) up to 684\% under a magnetic field $μ_0H$ = 15 T at $T$ = 2 K. The linear MR decreases with increasing temperature, but it is still as large as 61\% under $μ_0H$ of 15 T at room temperature. Such a giant linear MR is unlikely to be described by the quantum model as the quantum condition is not satisfied. Instead, we found that the slope of MR scales with the Hall mobility, and it can be well explained by a classical disorder model.

Cluster spin-glass ground state in quasi-one-dimensional KCr$_{3}$As$_{3}$

We report structural and physical properties of a new quasi-one-dimensional Cr-based compound, KCr$_{3}$As$_{3}$, which is prepared by potassium deintercalation from the superconductive K$_{2}$Cr$_{3}$As$_{3}$. KCr$_{3}$As$_{3}$ adopts the TlFe$_{3}$Te$_{3}$-type structure with space group $P6_{3}$/$m$ (No. 176). The high-temperature magnetic susceptibility obeys the Curie-Weiss law with an effective magnetic moment of 0.68 $μ_{\mathrm{B}}$/Cr. Below 56 K the susceptibility deviates from the high-temperature Curie-Weiss behavior, coinciding with the rapid increase in resistivity, which suggests formation of spin clusters. The short-range spin correlations are also supported by the specific-heat data. The title material does not exhibit bulk superconductivity; instead, it shows a cluster spin-glass state below $\sim$ 5 K.

Physical properties and electronic structure of Sr$_2$Cr$_3$As$_2$O$_2$ containing CrO$_2$ and Cr$_2$As$_2$ square-planar lattices

We report the physical properties and electronic structure calculations of a layered chromium oxypnictide, Sr$_2$Cr$_3$As$_2$O$_2$, which crystallizes in a Sr$_2$Mn$_3$As$_2$O$_2$-type structure containing both CrO$_2$ planes and Cr$_2$As$_2$ layers. The newly synthesized material exhibits a metallic conduction with a dominant electron-magnon scattering. Magnetic and specific-heat measurements indicate at least two intrinsic magnetic transitions below room temperature. One is an antiferromagnetic transition at 291 K, probably associated with a spin ordering in the Cr$_2$As$_2$ layers. Another transition is broad, occurring at around 38 K, and possibly due to a short-range spin order in the CrO$_2$ planes. Our first-principles calculations indicate predominant two-dimensional antiferromagnetic exchange couplings, and suggest a KG-type (i.e. K$_2$NiF$_4$ type for CrO$_2$ planes and G type for Cr$_2$As$_2$ layers) magnetic structure, with reduced moments for both Cr sublattices. The corresponding electronic states near the Fermi energy are mostly contributed from Cr-3$d$ orbitals which weakly (modestly) hybridize with the O-2$p$ (As-4$p$) orbitals in the CrO$_2$ (Cr$_2$As$_2$) layers. The bare bandstructure density of states at the Fermi level is only $\sim$1/4 of the experimental value derived from the low-temperature specific-heat data, consistent with the remarkable electron-magnon coupling. The title compound is argued to be a possible candidate to host superconductivity.

Superconductivity in quasi-one-dimensional Cs2Cr3As3 with large interchain distance

Since the discovery of high-temperature superconductivity (SC) in quasi-two-dimensional copper oxides, a few layered compounds, which bear similarities to the cuprates, have also been found to host unconventional SC. Our recent observation of SC at 6.1 K in correlated electron material K2Cr3As3 (J. K. Bao et al., arXiv: 1412.0067) represents an obviously different paradigm, primarily because of its quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) nature. The new material is structurally featured by the (Cr3As3)2- double-walled subnano-tubes composed of face-sharing Cr6/2 (As6/2) octahedron linear chains, which are well separated by columns of K+ counterions. Later, an isostructural superconducting Rb2Cr3As3 was synthesized, thus forming a new superconducting family. Here we report the third member, Cs2Cr3As3, which possesses the largest interchain distance. SC appears below 2.2 K. Similar to the former two sister compounds, Cs2Cr3As3 exhibits a non-Fermi liquid behavior with a linear temperature dependence of resistivity in the normal state, and a high upper critical field beyond the Pauli limit as well, suggesting common unconventional SC in the Q1D Cr-based material.

Superconductivity in quasi-one-dimensional K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ with significant electron correlations

We report the discovery of bulk superconductivity (SC) at 6.1 K in a quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) chromium pnictide K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ which contains [(Cr$_3$As$_3$)$^{2-}$]$_{\infty}$ double-walled subnano-tubes with face-sharing Cr$_{6/2}$ (As$_{6/2}$) octahedron linear chains in the inner (outer) wall. The material has a large electronic specific-heat coefficient of 70$\sim$75 mJ K$^{-2}$ mol$^{-1}$, indicating significantly strong electron correlations. Signature of non-Fermi liquid behavior is shown by the linear temperature dependence of resistivity in a broad temperature range from 7 to 300 K. Unconventional SC is preliminarily manifested by the estimated upper critical field exceeding the Pauli limit by a factor of three to four. The title compound represents a rare example that possibly unconventional SC emerges in a Q1D system with strong electron correlations.

Synthesis, crystal structure and physical properties of quasi-one-dimensional ACr$_3$As$_3$ (A = Rb, Cs)

Recently, new Cr-based superconductors, A$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ (A = K, Rb, Cs), have gained a strong interest because of their one-dimensional crystal structures and electron correlations. Here we report the crystal structure and physical properties of two related materials ACr$_3$As$_3$ (A = Rb, Cs) which are synthesized via a soft-chemical A+ deintercalation in A$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$. The new compounds remain one-dimensional (Cr$_3$As$_3$)$_{\infty}$ linear chains, and the interchain distance can be tuned by the incorporation of the alkali-metal cations with different sizes. The physical-property measurements indicate a local-moment behavior at high temperatures, and the moments freeze into a cluster spin-glass state below 5$\sim$6 K. No superconductivity was observed in both materials. We also found that, with increasing the interchain distance, the Cr effective moments increase monotonically, accompanied with the enhancement of semi-conductivity. Our results shed light on the understanding of occurrence of superconductivity in A$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$.

Synaptotagmin 7 Functions as a Ca2+-sensor for Synaptic Vesicle Replenishment

Synaptotagmin (syt) 7 is one of three syt isoforms found in all metazoans; it is ubiquitously expressed, yet its function in neurons remains obscure. Here, we resolved Ca2+-dependent and Ca2+-independent synaptic vesicle (SV) replenishment pathways, and found that syt 7 plays a selective and critical role in the Ca2+-dependent pathway. Mutations that disrupt Ca2+-binding to syt 7 abolish this function, suggesting that syt 7 functions as a Ca2+-sensor for replenishment. The Ca2+-binding protein calmodulin (CaM) has also been implicated in SV replenishment, and we found that loss of syt 7 was phenocopied by a CaM antagonist. Moreover, we discovered that syt 7 binds to CaM in a highly specific and Ca2+-dependent manner; this interaction requires intact Ca2+-binding sites within syt 7. Together, these data indicate that a complex of two conserved Ca2+-binding proteins, syt 7 and CaM, serve as a key regulator of SV replenishment in presynaptic nerve terminals.

Intersecting non-SUSY $p$-brane with chargeless 0-brane as black $p$-brane

Unlike BPS $p$-brane, non-supersymmetric (non-susy) $p$-brane could be either charged or chargeless. As envisaged in [hep-th/0503007], we construct an intersecting non-susy $p$-brane with chargeless non-susy $q$-brane by taking T-dualities along the delocalized directions of the non-susy $q$-brane solution delocalized in $(p-q)$ transverse directions (where $p\geq q$). In general these solutions are characterized by four independent parameters. We show that when $q=0$ the intersecting charged as well as chargeless non-susy $p$-brane with chargeless 0-brane can be mapped by a coordinate transformation to black $p$-brane when two of the four parameters characterizing the solution take some special values. For definiteness we restrict our discussion to space-time dimensions $d=10$. We observe that parameters characterizing the black brane and the related dynamics are in general in a different branch of the parameter space from those describing the brane-antibrane annihilation process. We demonstrate this in the two examples, namely, the non-susy D0-brane and the intersecting non-susy D4 and D0-branes, where the solutions with the explicit microscopic descriptions are known.
