Periods of families of curves in threefolds

Clemens' conjecture states that the the number of rational curve in a generic quintic threefold is finite. If it is false we prove that certain periods of rational curves in such a quintic threefold must vanish. Our method is based on a generalization of a proof of Max Noether's theorem using infinitesimal variation of Hodge structures and its reformulation in terms of integrals and Gauss-Manin connection.

Algebraic curves and foliations

Consider a field $k$ of characteristic $0$, not necessarily algebraically closed, and a fixed algebraic curve $f=0$ defined by a tame polynomial $f\in k[x,y]$ with only quasi-homogeneous singularities. We prove that the space of holomorphic foliations in the plane ${mathbb A}^2_\k$ having $f=0$ as a fixed invariant curve is generated as $k[x,y]$-module by at most four elements, three of them are the trivial foliations $fdx, fdy$ and $df$. Our proof is algorithmic and constructs the fourth foliation explicitly. Using Serre's GAGA and Quillen-Suslin theorem, we show that for a suitable field extension $K$ of $k$ such a module over $K[x,y]$ is actually generated by two elements, and therefore, such curves are free divisors in the sense of K. Saito. After performing Groebner basis for this module, we observe that in many well-known examples, $K=k$.

Periods of linear algebraic cycles

In this article we use a theorem of Carlson and Griffiths and compute periods of linear algebraic cycles inside the Fermat variety of even dimension $n$ and degree $d$. As an application, for examples of $n$ and $d$ we prove that the locus of hypersurfaces containing two linear cycles whose intersection is of low dimension, is a reduced component of the Hodge locus in the underlying parameter space. We also check the same statement for hypersurfaces containing a complete intersection algebraic cycle. Our result confirms the Hodge conjecture for Hodge cycles obtained by the monodromy of the homology class of such algebraic cycles. This is known as the variational Hodge conjecture.

Gauss-Manin connection in disguise: Noether-Lefschetz and Hodge loci

We give a classification of components of the Hodge locus in any parameter space of smooth projective varieties. This is done using determinantal varieties constructed from the infinitesimal variation of Hodge structures (IVHS) of the underlying family. As a corollary we prove that the minimum codimension for the components of the Hodge locus in the parameter space of $m$-dimensional hypersurfaces of degree $d$ with $d\geq 2+\frac{4}{m}$ and in a Zariski neighborhood of the point representing the Fermat variety, is obtained by the locus of hypersurfaces passing through an $\frac{m}{2}$-dimensional linear projective space. In the particular case of surfaces in the projective space of dimension three, this is a theorem of Green and Voisin. In this case our classification under a computational hypothesis on IVHS implies a weaker version of the Harris-Voisin conjecture which says that the set of special components of the Noether-Lefschetz locus is not Zariski dense in the parameter space.

Calabi-Yau modular forms in limit: Elliptic Fibrations

We study the limit of Calabi-Yau modular forms, and in particular, those resulting in classical modular forms. We then study two parameter families of elliptically fibred Calabi-Yau fourfolds and describe the modular forms arising from the degeneracy loci. In the case of elliptically fibred Calabi-Yau threefolds our approach gives a mathematical proof of many observations about modularity properties of topological string amplitudes starting with the work of Candelas, Font, Katz and Morrison. In the case of Calabi-Yau fourfolds we derive new identities not computed before.

Automorphic forms for triangle groups: Integrality properties

We classify all primes appearing in the denominators of the Hauptmodul $J$ and modular forms for non-arithmetic triangle groups with a cusp. These primes have a congruence condition in terms of the order of the generators of the group. As a corollary we show that for the Hecke group of type $(2,m,\infty)$, the prime $p$ does not appear in the denominator of $J$ if and only if $p\equiv \pm 1\pmod m$.

Gauss-Manin connection in disguise: Calabi-Yau threefolds

We describe a Lie Algebra on the moduli space of Calabi-Yau threefolds enhanced with differential forms and its relation to the Bershadsky-Cecotti-Ooguri-Vafa holomorphic anomaly equation. In particular, we describe algebraic topological string partition functions $F_g^{alg}, g\geq 1$, which encode the polynomial structure of holomorphic and non-holomorphic topological string partition functions. Our approach is based on Grothendieck's algebraic de Rham cohomology and on the algebraic Gauss-Manin connection. In this way, we recover a result of Yamaguchi-Yau and Alim-Länge in an algebraic context. Our proofs use the fact that the special polynomial generators defined using the special geometry of deformation spaces of Calabi-Yau threefolds correspond to coordinates on such a moduli space. We discuss the mirror quintic as an example.

Modular-type functions attached to Calabi-Yau varieties: integrality properties

We study the integrality properties of the coefficients of the mirror map attached to the generalized hypergeometric function $_{n}F_{n-1}$ with rational parameters and with a maximal unipotent monodromy. We present a conjecture on the $p$-integrality of the mirror map which can be verified experimentally. We prove its consequence on the $N$-integrality of the mirror map for the particular cases $1\leq n\leq 4$. For $n=2$ we obtain the Takeuchi's classification of arithmetic triangle groups with a cusp, and for $n=4$ we prove that $14$ examples of hypergeometric Calabi-Yau equations are the full classification of hypergeometric mirror maps with integral coefficients. As a by-product we get the integrality of the corresponding algebra of modular-type functions. These are natural generalizations of the algebra of classical modular and quasi-modular forms in the case $n=2$.

Automorphic forms for triangle groups

For triangle groups, the (quasi-)automorphic forms are known just as explicitly as for the modular group SL$(2,\bbZ)$. We collect these expressions here, and then interpret them using the Halphen differential equation. We study the arithmetic properties of their Fourier coefficients at cusps and Taylor coefficients at elliptic fixed-points --- in both cases integrality is related to the arithmeticity of the triangle group. As an application of our formulas, we provide an explicit modular interpretation of periods of 14 families of Calabi-Yau threefolds over the thrice-punctured sphere.

Modular-type functions attached to mirror quintic Calabi-Yau varieties

In this article we study a differential algebra of modular-type functions attached to the periods of a one parameter family of Calabi-Yau varieties which is mirror dual to the universal family of quintic threefolds. Such an algebra is generated by seven functions satisfying functional and differential equations in parallel to the modular functional equations of classical Eisenstein series and the Ramanujan differential equation. Our result is the first example of automorphic-type functions attached to varieties whose period domain is not Hermitian symmetric. It is a reformulation and realization of a problem of Griffiths around seventies on the existence of automorphic functions for the moduli of polarized Hodge structures.

Quasi-modular forms attached to elliptic curves: Hecke operators

In this article we introduce Hecke operators on the differential algebra of geometric quasi-modular forms. As an application for each natural number $d$ we construct a vector field in six dimensions which determines uniquely the polynomial relations between the Eisenstein series of weight 2,4 and 6 and their transformation under multiplication of the argument by $d$, and in particular, it determines uniquely the modular curve of degree $d$ isogenies between elliptic curves.

Quasi-modular forms attached to Hodge structures

The space $D$ of Hodge structures on a fixed polarized lattice is known as Griffiths period domain and its quotient by the isometry group of the lattice is the moduli of polarized Hodge structures of a fixed type. When $D$ is a Hermition symmetric domain then we have automorphic forms on $D$, which according to Baily-Borel theorem, they give an algebraic structure to the mentioned moduli space. In this article we slightly modify this picture by considering the space $U$ of polarized lattices in a fixed complex vector space with a fixed Hodge filtration and polarization. It turns out that the isometry group of the filtration and polarization, which is an algebraic group, acts on $U$ and the quotient is again the moduli of polarized Hodge structures. This formulation leads us to the notion of quasi-automorphic forms which generalizes quasi-modular forms attached to elliptic curves.

Foliated neighborhoods of exceptional submanifolds

The present article is a study of germs of regular foliations transverse to an embedded strongly exceptional submanifold of a complex manifold. Cohomological conditions are given on this embedding for the existence of these foliations and their classification is established. One dimensional foliations singular at the submanifold and a generalization of a linearization theorem of Poincaré for these foliations, are used in this study. As a consequence of our approach, we obtain a refinement of the embedding theorem of Grauert.

Quasi-modular forms attached to elliptic curves, I

In the present text we give a geometric interpretation of quasi-modular forms using moduli of elliptic curves with marked elements in their de Rham cohomologies. In this way differential equations of modular and quasi-modular forms are interpreted as vector fields on such moduli spaces and they can be calculated from the Gauss-Manin connection of the corresponding universal family of elliptic curves. For the full modular group such a differential equation is calculated and it turns out to be the Ramanujan differential equation between Eisenstein series. We also explain the notion of period map constructed from elliptic integrals. This turns out to be the bridge between the algebraic notion of a quasi-modular form and the one as a holomorphic function on the upper half plane. In this way we also get another interpretation, essentially due to Halphen, of the Ramanujan differential equation in terms of hypergeometric functions. The interpretation of quasi-modular forms as sections of jet bundles and some related enumerative problems are also presented.

Eisenstein type series for Calabi-Yau varieties

In this article we introduce an ordinary differential equation associated to the one parameter family of Calabi-Yau varieties which is mirror dual to the universal family of smooth quintic three folds. It is satisfied by seven functions written in the $q$-expansion form and the Yukawa coupling turns out to be rational in these functions. This is a generalization of the Ramanujan differential equation satisfied by three Eisenstein series.

Commuting holonomies and rigidity of holomorphic foliations

In this article we study deformations of a holomorphic foliation with a generic non-rational first integral in the complex plane. We consider two vanishing cycles in a regular fiber of the first integral with a non-zero self intersection and with vanishing paths which intersect each other only at their start points. It is proved that if the deformed holonomies of such vanishing cycles commute then the deformed foliation has also a first integral. Our result generalizes a similar result of Ilyashenko on the rigidity of holomorphic foliations with a persistent center singularity. The main tools of the proof are Picard-Lefschetz theory and the theory of iterated integrals for such deformations.

On the non-persistence of Hamiltonian identity cycles

We study the leading term of the holonomy map of a perturbed plane polynomial Hamiltonian foliation. The non-vanishing of this term implies the non-persistence of the corresponding Hamiltonian identity cycle. We prove that this does happen for generic perturbations and cycles, as well for cycles which are commutators in Hamiltonian foliations of degree two. Our approach relies on the Chen's theory of iterated path integrals which we briefly resume.

The infinitesimal 16th Hilbert problem in dimension zero

We study the analogue of the infinitesimal 16th Hilbert problem in dimension zero. Lower and upper bounds for the number of the zeros of the corresponding Abelian integrals (which are algebraic functions) are found. We study the relation between the vanishing of an Abelian integral $I(t)$ defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ and its arithmetic properties. Finally, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for an Abelian integral to be identically zero.
