Deep Q-learning of global optimizer of multiply model parameters for viscoelastic imaging

Objective: Estimation of the global optima of multiple model parameters is valuable in imaging to form a reliable diagnostic image. Given non convexity of the objective function, it is challenging to avoid from different local minima. Methods: We first formulate the global searching of multiply parameters to be a k-D move in the parametric space, and convert parameters updating to be state-action decision-making problem. We proposed a novel Deep Q-learning of Model Parameters (DQMP) method for global optimization of model parameters by updating the parameter configurations through actions that maximize a Q-value, which employs a Deep Reward Network designed to learn global reward values from both visible curve fitting errors and hidden parameter errors. Results: The DQMP method was evaluated by viscoelastic imaging on soft matter by Kelvin-Voigt fractional derivative (KVFD) modeling. In comparison to other methods, imaging of parameters by DQMP yielded the smallest errors (< 2%) to the ground truth images. DQMP was applied to viscoelastic imaging on biological tissues, which indicated a great potential of imaging on physical parameters in diagnostic applications. Conclusions: DQMP method is able to achieve global optima, yielding accurate model parameter estimates in viscoelastic imaging. Assessment of DQMP by simulation imaging and ultrasound breast imaging demonstrated the consistency, reliability of the imaged parameters, and powerful global searching ability of DQMP. Significance: DQMP method is promising for imaging of multiple parameters, and can be generalized to global optimization for many other complex nonconvex functions and imaging of physical parameters.

Quasi-periodic oscillations of the X-ray burst from the magnetar SGR J1935+2154 and associated with the fast radio burst FRB 200428

The origin(s) and mechanism(s) of fast radio bursts (FRBs), which are short radio pulses from cosmological distances, have remained a major puzzle since their discovery. We report a strong Quasi-Periodic Oscillation(QPO) of 40 Hz in the X-ray burst from the magnetar SGR J1935+2154 and associated with FRB 200428, significantly detected with the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT) and also hinted by the Konus-Wind data. QPOs from magnetar bursts have only been rarely detected; our 3.4 sigma (p-value is 2.9e-4) detection of the QPO reported here reveals the strongest QPO signal observed from magnetars (except in some very rare giant flares), making this X-ray burst unique among magnetar bursts. The two X-ray spikes coinciding with the two FRB pulses are also among the peaks of the QPO. Our results suggest that at least some FRBs are related to strong oscillation processes of neutron stars. We also show that we may overestimate the significance of the QPO signal and underestimate the errors of QPO parameters if QPO exists only in a fraction of the time series of a X-ray burst which we use to calculate the Leahy-normalized periodogram.

Corrected score methods for estimating Bayesian networks with error-prone nodes

Motivated by inferring cellular signaling networks using noisy flow cytometry data, we develop procedures to draw inference for Bayesian networks based on error-prone data. Two methods for inferring causal relationships between nodes in a network are proposed based on penalized estimation methods that account for measurement error and encourage sparsity. We discuss consistency of the proposed network estimators and develop an approach for selecting the tuning parameter in the penalized estimation methods. Empirical studies are carried out to compare the proposed methods and a naive method that ignores measurement error with applications to synthetic data and to single cell flow cytometry data.

Overview to the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT) Satellite

As China's first X-ray astronomical satellite, the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (HXMT), which was dubbed as Insight-HXMT after the launch on June 15, 2017, is a wide-band (1-250 keV) slat-collimator-based X-ray astronomy satellite with the capability of all-sky monitoring in 0.2-3 MeV. It was designed to perform pointing, scanning and gamma-ray burst (GRB) observations and, based on the Direct Demodulation Method (DDM), the image of the scanned sky region can be reconstructed. Here we give an overview of the mission and its progresses, including payload, core sciences, ground calibration/facility, ground segment, data archive, software, in-orbit performance, calibration, background model, observations and some preliminary results.

Identifying heterogeneous transgenerational DNA methylation sites via clustering in beta regression

This paper explores the transgenerational DNA methylation pattern (DNA methylation transmitted from one generation to the next) via a clustering approach. Beta regression is employed to model the transmission pattern from parents to their offsprings at the population level. To facilitate this goal, an expectation maximization algorithm for parameter estimation along with a BIC criterion to determine the number of clusters is proposed. Applying our method to the DNA methylation data composed of 4063 CpG sites of 41 mother-father-infant triads, we identified a set of CpG sites in which DNA methylation transmission is dominated by fathers, while at a large number of CpG sites, DNA methylation is mainly maternally transmitted to the offspring.
