Floquet-surface bound states in the continuum in a resonantly driven 1D tilted defect-free lattice

We study the Floquet-surface bound states embedded in the continuum (BICs) and bound states out the continuum (BOCs)in a resonantly driven 1D tilted defect-free lattice. In contrast to fragile single-particle BICs assisted by specially tailored potentials, we find that Floquet-surface BICs, stable against structural perturbations, can exist in a wide range of parameter space. By using a multiple-time-scale asymptotic analysis in the high-frequency limit, the appearance of Floquet-surface bound states can be analytically explained by effective Tamm-type defects at boundaries induced by the resonance between the periodic driving and tilt. The phase boundary of existing Floquet-surface states is also analytically given. Based on the repulsion effect of surface states, we propose to detect transition points and measure the number of Floquet-surface bound states by quantum walk. Our work opens a new door to experimental realization of BICs in quantum system.

Holding and transferring matter-wave solitons against gravity by spin-orbit-coupling tweezers

We consider possibilities to grasp and drag one-dimensional solitons in two-component Bose- Einstein condensates (BECs), under the action of gravity, by tweezers induced by spatially confined spin-orbit (SO) coupling applied to the BEC, with the help of focused laser illumination. Solitons of two types are considered, semi-dipoles and mixed modes. We find critical values of the gravity force, up to which the solitons may be held or transferred by the tweezers. The dependence of the critical force on the magnitude and spatial extension of the localized SO interaction, as well as on the solitons norm and speed (in the transfer regime), are systematically studied by means of numerical methods, and analytically with the help of a quasi-particle approximation for the soliton. In particular, a noteworthy finding is that the critical gravity force increases with the increase of the transfer speed (i.e., moving solitons are more robust than quiescent ones). Nonstationary regimes are addressed too, by considering abrupt application of gravity to solitons created in the weightless setting. In that case, solitons feature damped shuttle motion, provided that the gravity force does not exceed a dynamical critical value, which is smaller than its static counterpart. The results may help to design gravimeters based on ultracold atoms.

Stability and collisions of quantum droplets in PT -symmetric dual-core couplers

We study the effect of the interplay between parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry and optical lattice (OL) potential on dynamics of quantum droplets (QDs) forming in a binary bosonic condensate trapped in a dual-core system. It is found that the stability of symmetric QDs in such non-Hermitian system depends critically on the competition of gain and loss $γ$, inter-core coupling $κ$, and OL potential. In the absence of OL potential, the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric QDs are unstable against symmetry-breaking perturbations with the increase of the total condensate norm $N$, and they retrieve the stability at larger $N$, in the weakly-coupled regime. As expected, the stable region of the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric QDs shrinks when $γ$ increases, i.e., the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry is prone to break the stability of QDs. There is a critical value of $κ$ beyond which the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric QDs are entirely stable in the unbroken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric phase. In the presence of OL potential, the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric on-site QDs are still stable for relatively small and large values of $N$. Nevertheless, it is demonstrated that the OL potential can assist stabilization of $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric on-site QDs for some moderate values of $N$. On the other hand, it is worth noting that the relatively small $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric off-site QDs are unstable, and only the relatively large ones are stable. Furthermore, collisions between stable $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric QDs are considered too. It is revealed that the slowly moving $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric QDs tend to merge into breathers, while the fast-moving ones display quasi-elastic collision and suffer fragmentation for small and large values of $N$, respectively.

Dynamic winding number for exploring band topology

Topological invariants play a key role in the characterization of topological states. Due to the existence of exceptional points, it is a great challenge to detect topological invariants in non-Hermitian systems. We put forward a dynamic winding number, the winding of realistic observables in long-time average, for exploring band topology in both Hermitian and non-Hermitian two-band models via a unified approach. We build a concrete relation between dynamic winding numbers and conventional topological invariants. In one-dimension, the dynamical winding number directly gives the conventional winding number. In two-dimension, the Chern number relates to the weighted sum of dynamic winding numbers of all phase singularity points. This work opens a new avenue to measure topological invariants not requesting any prior knowledge of system topology via time-averaged spin textures.

Asymmetric sequential Landau-Zener dynamics of Bose condensed atoms in a cavity

We explore the asymmetric sequential Landau-Zener (LZ) dynamics in an ensemble of interacting Bose condensed two-level atoms coupled with a cavity field. Assuming the couplings between all atoms and the cavity field are identical, the interplay between atom-atom interaction and detuning may lead to a series of LZ transitions. Unlike the conventional sequential LZ transitions, which are symmetric to the zero detuning, the LZ transitions of Bose condensed atoms in a cavity field are asymmetric and sensitively depend on the photon number distribution of the cavity. In LZ processes involving single excitation numbers, both the variance of the relative atom number and the step slope of the sequential population ladder are asymmetric, and the asymmetry become more significant for smaller excitation numbers. Furthermore, in LZ processes involving multiple excitation numbers, there may appear asymmetric population ladders with decreasing step heights. During a dynamical LZ process, due to the atom-cavity coupling, the cavity field shows dynamical collapse and revivals. In comparison with the symmetric LZ transitions in a classical field, the asymmetric LZ transitions in a cavity field originate from the photon-number-dependent Rabi frequency. The asymmetric sequential LZ dynamics of Bose condensed atoms in a cavity field may open up a new way to explore the fundamental many-body physics in coupled atom-photon systems.

Band-gap structure and chiral discrete solitons in optical lattices with artificial gauge fields

We study three-leg-ladder optical lattices loaded with repulsive atomic Bose-Einstein condensates and subjected to artificial gauge fields. By employing the plane-wave analysis and variational approach, we analyze the band-gap structure of the energy spectrum and reveal the exotic swallow-tail loop structures in the energy-level anti-crossing regions due to an interplay between the atom-atom interaction and artificial gauge field. Also, we discover stable discrete solitons residing in a semi-infinite gap above the highest band, these discrete solitons are associated with the chiral edge currents.

Floquet control of the gain and loss in a PT-symmetric optical coupler

Controlling the balanced gain and loss in a PT-symmetric system is a rather challenging task. Utilizing Floquet theory, we explore the constructive role of periodic modulation in controlling the gain and loss of a PT-symmetric optical coupler. It is found that the gain and loss of the system can be manipulated by applying a periodic modulation. Further, such an original non-Hermitian system can even be modulated into an effective Hermitian system derived by the high-frequency Floquet method. Therefore, compared with other PT symmetry control schemes, our protocol can modulate the unbroken PT-symmetric range to a wider parameter region. Our results provide a promising approach for controlling the gain and loss of a realistic system.

Kibble-Zurek dynamics in an array of coupled binary Bose condensates

Universal dynamics of spontaneous symmetry breaking is central to understanding the universal behavior of spontaneous defect formation in various system from the early universe, condensed-matter systems to ultracold atomic systems. We explore the universal real-time dynamics in an array of coupled binary atomic Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices, which undergo a spontaneous symmetry breaking from the symmetric Rabi oscillation to the broken-symmetry self-trapping. In addition to Goldstone modes, there exist gapped Higgs mode whose excitation gap vanishes at the critical point. In the slow passage through the critical point, we analytically find that the symmetry-breaking dynamics obeys the Kibble-Zurek mechanism. From the scalings of bifurcation delay and domain formation, we numerically extract two Kibble-Zurek exponents $b_{1}=ν/(1+νz)$ and $b_{2}=1/(1+νz)$, which give the static correlation-length critical exponent $ν$ and the dynamic critical exponent $z$. Our approach provides an efficient way to simultaneous determination of the critical exponents $ν$ and $z$ for a continuous phase transition.

Bloch-Landau-Zener dynamics in single-particle Wannier-Zeeman systems

Stimulated by the experimental realization of spin-dependent tunneling via gradient magnetic field [Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 225301 (2013); Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 185301 (2013)], we investigate dynamics of Bloch oscillations and Landau-Zener tunneling of single spin-half particles in a periodic potential under the influence of a spin-dependent constant force. In analogy to the Wannier-Stark system, we call our system as the Wannier-Zeeman system. If there is no coupling between the two spin states, the system can be described by two crossing Wannier-Stark ladders with opposite tilts. The spatial crossing between two Wannier-Stark ladders becomes a spatial anti-crossing if the two spin states are coupled by external fields. For a wave-packet away from the spatial anti-crossing, due to the spin-dependent constant force, it will undergo spatial Landau-Zener transitions assisted by the intrinsic intra-band Bloch oscillations, which we call the Bloch-Landau-Zener dynamics. If the inter-spin coupling is sufficiently strong, the system undergoes adiabatic Bloch-Landau-Zener dynamics, in which the spin dynamics follows the local dressed states. Otherwise, for non-strong inter-spin couplings, the system undergoes non-adiabatic Bloch-Landau-Zener dynamics.

Cluster Gutzwiller study of Bose-Hubbard ladder: ground-state phase diagram and many-body Landau-Zener dynamics

We present a cluster Gutzwiller mean-field study for ground states and time-evolution dynamics in the Bose-Hubbard ladder (BHL), which can be realized by loading Bose atoms in double-well optical lattices. In our cluster mean-field approach, we treat each double-well unit of two lattice sites as a coherent whole for composing the cluster Gutzwiller ansatz, which may remain some residual correlations in each two-site unit. For a unbiased BHL, in addition to conventional superfluid phase and integer Mott insulator phases, we find that there are exotic fractional insulator phases if the inter-chain tunneling is much stronger than the intra-chain one. The fractional insulator phases can not be found by using a conventional mean-field treatment based upon the single-site Gutzwiller ansatz. For a biased BHL, we find there appear single-atom tunneling and interaction blockade if the system is dominated by the interplay between the on-site interaction and the inter-chain bias. In the many-body Landau-Zener process, in which the inter-chain bias is linearly swept from negative to positive or vice versa, our numerical results are qualitatively consistent with the experimental observation [Nat. Phys. \textbf{7}, 61 (2011)]. Our cluster bosonic Gutzwiller treatment is of promising perspectives in exploring exotic quantum phases and time-evolution dynamics of bosonic particles in superlattices.

Dissipative Quantum Metrology with Spin Cat States

The maximally entangled states are excellent candidates for achieving Heisenberg-limited measurements in ideal quantum metrology, however, they are fragile against dissipation such as particle losses and their achievable precisions may become even worse than the standard quantum limit (SQL). Here we present a robust high-precision measurement scheme via spin cat states (a kind of non-Gaussian entangled states in superposition of two spin coherent states) in the presence of particle losses. The input spin cat states are of excellent robustness against particle losses and their achievable precisions may still beat the SQL. For realistic measurements based upon our scheme, comparing with the population measurement, the parity measurement is more suitable for yielding higher precisions. In phase measurement with realistic dissipative systems of bosons, our scheme provides a robust and realizable way to achieve high-precision measurements beyond the SQL.

Photon-induced sideband transitions in a many-body Landau-Zener process

We investigate the many-body Landau-Zener (LZ) process in a two-site Bose-Hubbard model driven by a time-periodic field. We find that the driving field may induce sideband transitions in addition to the main LZ transitions. These photon-induced sideband transitions are a signature of the photon-assisted tunneling in our many-body LZ process. In the strong interaction regime, we develop an analytical theory for understanding the sideband transitions, which is confirmed by our numerical simulation. Furthermore, we discuss the quantization of the driving field. In the effective model of the quantized driving field, the sideband transitions can be understood as the LZ transitions between states of different "photon" numbers.

Analytical eigenstates for the quantum Rabi model

We develop a method to find analytical solutions for the eigenstates of the quantum Rabi model. These include symmetric, anti-symmetric and asymmetric analytic solutions given in terms of the confluent Heun functions. Both regular and exceptional solutions are given in a unified form. In addition, the analytic conditions for determining the energy spectrum are obtained. Our results show that conditions proposed by Braak [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{107}, 100401 (2011)] are a type of sufficiency condition for determining the regular solutions. The well-known Judd isolated exact solutions appear naturally as truncations of the confluent Heun functions.

Analytical energy spectrum for hybrid mechanical systems

We investigate the energy spectrum for hybrid mechanical systems described by non-parity-symmetric quantum Rabi models. A set of analytical solutions in terms of the confluent Heun functions and their analytical energy spectrum are obtained. The analytical energy spectrum includes regular and exceptional parts, which are both confirmed by direct numerical simulation. The regular part is determined by the zeros of the Wronskian for a pair of analytical solutions. The exceptional part is relevant to the isolated exact solutions and its energy eigenvalues are obtained by analyzing the truncation conditions for the confluent Heun functions. By analyzing the energy eigenvalues for exceptional points, we obtain the analytical conditions for the energy-level-crossings, which correspond to two-fold energy degeneracy.

Nonlinear dissipative dynamics of a two-component atomic condensate coupling with a continuum

We investigate the nonlinear dissipative coherence bifurcation and population dynamics of a two-component atomic Bose-Einstein condensate coupling with a continuum. The coupling between the two-component condensates and the continuum brings effective dissipations to the two-component condensates. The steady states and the coherence bifurcation depend on both dissipation and the nonlinear interaction between condensed atoms. The coherence among condensed atoms may be even enhanced by the effective dissipations. The combination of dissipation and nonlinearity allows one to control the switching between different self-trapped states or the switching between a self-trapped state and a non-self-trapped state.

Pseudo Parity-Time Symmetry in Optical Systems

We introduce a novel concept of the {\em pseudo} parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry in periodically modulated optical systems with balanced gain and loss. We demonstrate that whether the original system is $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric or not, we can manipulate the property of the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry by applying a periodic modulation in such a way that the effective system derived by the high-frequency Floquet method is $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric. If the original system is non-$\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric, the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry in the effective system will lead to quasi-stationary propagation that can be associated with the \emph{pseudo $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry}. Our results provide a promising approach for manipulating the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry of realistic systems.

Regular and chaotic Bose-Einstein condensate in an accelerated Wannier-Stark lattice

We investigate a Bose-Einstein condensate held in a quasi-one-dimensional Wannier-Stark lattice which is a combination of linear potential with an accelerated optical lattice. It is demonstrated that the system can be reduced to a periodically driven Gross-Pitaevskii one, in which we find the first exact analytical solution and the regular and chaotic numerical solutions with accelerated atomic flow densities. The results suggest an experimental scheme for generating and controlling the accelerating regular and chaotic matter-waves.
