Hybrid stars and QCD phase transition with a NJL-like model

In this paper, we introduce a self-consistent mean field approximation to study the QCD phase transition and the structure of hybrid stars within the framework of NJL model. In our practice, a phenomenological parameter $α$ is introduced, which reflects the weights of "direct" channel and "exchange" channel under a finite chemical potential. The mass-radius relation is obtained by solving the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equation using a crossover equation of state (EOS). We calculate the density distribution in a two solar-mass hybrid star to show the effects of different parameters. We also calculate the tidal Love number $k_2$ and the deformability $(Λ)$. It is found that the stiffness of the EOS increases with $α$, which allows us to obtain a hybrid star with a maximum mass of 2.40 solar-mass through our model. The observation of over 2.06 solar-mass neutron stars may indicates that the chiral transition may be a crossover on the whole $T-μ$ plane.

Effects of gauge boson mass on chiral and deconfinement phase transitions in QED$_{3}$

Based on the experimental observation that there is a coexisting region between the antiferromagnetic (AF) and $\textit{d}$-wave superconducting ($\textit{d}$SC) phases, the influences of gauge boson mass $m_{a}$ on chiral symmetry restoration and deconfinement phase transitions in QED$_{3}$ are investigated simultaneously within a unified framework, i.e., Dyson-Schwinger equations. The results show that the chiral symmetry restoration phase transition in the presence of the gauge boson mass $m_{a}$ is a typical second-order phase transition; the chiral symmetry restoration and deconfinement phase transitions are coincident; the critical number of fermion flavors $N^{c}_{f}$ decreases as the gauge boson mass $m_{a}$ increases and there exists a boundary that separates the $N^{c}_{f}$-$m_{a}$ plane into chiral symmetry breaking/confinement region for ($N_{f}^{c}$, $m_{a}$) below the boundary and chiral symmetry restoration/deconfinement region for ($N_{f}^{c}$, $m_{a}$) above it.

Continuum study of various susceptibilities within thermal QED$_3$

In this paper, the relations of four different susceptibilities (i.e., the chiral susceptibility, the fermion number susceptibility, the thermal susceptibility and the staggered spin susceptibility) are investigated both in and beyond the chiral limit. To this end, we numerically solve the finite temperature version of the truncated Dyson-Schwinger equations for fermion and boson propagator. It is found that, in the chiral limit, the four susceptibilities give the same critical temperature and signal a typical second order phase transition. But the situation changes beyond the chiral limit: the critical temperatures from the chiral and the thermal susceptibilities are different, which shows that to define a critical region instead of an exclusive point for crossover might be a more suitable choice; meanwhile, both the fermion number and the staggered spin susceptibilities have no singular behaviors any more, this may mean that they are no longer available to describe the crossover properties of the system.

Different critical points of chiral and deconfinement phase transitions in (2+1)-dimensional fermion-gauge interacting model

Based on the truncated Dyson-Schwinger equations for fermion and massive boson propagators in QED$_3$, the fermion chiral condensate and the mass singularities of the fermion propagator via the Schwinger function are investigated. It is shown that the critical point of chiral phase transition is apparently different from that of deconfinement phase transition and in Nambu phase the fermion is confined only for small gauge boson mass.

Influence of gauge boson mass on the staggered spin susceptibility

Based on the study of the linear response of the fermion propagator in the presence of an external scalar field, we calculate the staggered spin susceptibility in the low energy limit in the framework of the Dyson-Schwinger approach. We analyze the effect of a finite gauge boson mass on the staggered spin susceptibility in both Nambu phase and Wigner phase. It is found that the gauge boson mass suppresses the staggered spin susceptibility in Wigner phase. In addition, we try to give an explanation for why the antiferromagnetic spin correlation increases when the doping is lowered.

Nature of chiral phase transition in QED$_3$ at zero density

Based on the feature of chiral susceptibility and thermal susceptibility at finite temperature, the nature of chiral phase transition around the critical number of fermion flavors ($N_c$) and the critical temperature ($T_c$) at a fixed fermion flavors number in massless QED$_3$ are investigated. It is showed that, at finite temperature the system exhibits a second-order phase transition at $N_c$ or $T_c$ and each of the estimated critical exponents is less than 1, while it reveals a higher-order continuous phase transition around $N_c$ at zero temperature.

The chiral phase transition of QED$_3$ around the critical number of fermion flavors

At zero temperature and density, the nature of the chiral phase transition in QED$_3$ with $\textit{N}_{f}$ massless fermion flavors is investigated. To this end, in Landau gauge, we numerically solve the coupled Dyson-Schwinger equations for the fermion and boson propagator within the bare and simplified Ball-Chiu vertices separately. It is found that, in the bare vertex approximation, the system undergoes a high-order continuous phase transition from the Nambu-Goldstone phase into the Wigner phase when the number of fermion flavors $\textit{N}_{f}$ reaches the critical number $\textit{N}_{f,c}$, while the system exhibits a typical characteristic of second-order phase transition for the simplified Ball-Chiu vertex.

Calculation of the staggered spin correlation in the framework of the Dyson-Schwinger approach

Based on the linear response of the fermion propagator with respect to an external field, we first derive a model-independent expression for the staggered spin susceptibility in which the influence of the full pseudoscalar vertex function is included. This expression for the staggered spin susceptibility is quite different from that given in the previous literature. The numerical values of the staggered spin susceptibility are calculated within the framework of the Dyson-Schwinger approach. Our numerical result shows that the nonperturbative dressing effects on the fermion propagator is very important when one studies the staggered spin susceptibility which corresponding to antiferromagnetic correlation in both Nambu phase and Winger phase.

Discussion for the Solutions of Dyson-Schwinger Equations at m>0 in QED3

In the case of nonzero fermion mass, within a range of Ansatze for the full fermion-boson vertex, we show that Dyson-Schwinger equation for the fermion propagator in QED3 has two qualitatively distinct dynamical chiral symmetry breaking solutions. As the fermion mass increases and reaches to a critical value mc, one solution disappears, and the dependence of mc on the number of fermion flavors is also given.

Influence of a uniform magnetic field on dynamical chiral symmetry breaking in QED$_3$

We study dynamical chiral symmetry breaking (DCSB) in an effective QED$_{3}$ theory of d-wave high temperature cuprate superconductors under a uniform magnetic field. At zero temperature, the external magnetic field induces a mixed state by generating vortices in the condensate of charged holons. The growing magnetic field suppresses the superfluid density and thus reduces the gauge field mass which is opened via the Anderson-Higgs mechanism. By numerically solving the Dyson-Schwinger gap equation, we show that the massless fermions acquires a dynamical gap through DCSB mechanism when the magnetic field strength $H$ is above a critical value $H_{c}$ and the fermion flavors $N$ is below a critical value $N_{c}$. Further, it is found that both $N_{c}$ and the dynamical fermion gap increase as the magnetic field $H$ grows. It is expected that our result can be tested in phenomena in high temperature cuprate superconductors.

Effect of gauge boson mass on the phase structure of QED$_{3}$

Dynamical chiral symmetry breaking (DCSB) in QED$_{3}$ with finite gauge boson mass is studied in the framework of the rainbow approximation of Dyson-Schwinger equations. By adopting a simple gauge boson propagator ansatz at finite temperature, we first numerically solve the Dyson-Schwinger equation for the fermion self-energy to determine the chiral phase diagram of QED$_3$ with finite gauge boson mass at finite chemical potential and finite temperature, then we study the effect of the finite gauge mass on the phase diagram of QED$_3$. It is found that the gauge boson mass $m_{a}$ suppresses the occurrence of DCSB. The area of the region in the chiral phase diagram corresponding to DCSB phase decreases as the gauge boson mass $m_{a}$ increases. In particular, chiral symmetry gets restored when $m_{a}$ is above a certain critical value. In this paper, we use DCSB to describe the antiferromagnetic order and use the gauge boson mass to describe the superconducting order. Our results give qualitatively a physical picture on the competition and coexistence between antiferromagnetic order and superconducting orders in high temperature cuprate superconductors.
