Chiral conformal field theory for topological states and the anyon eigenbasis on the torus

Model wave functions constructed from (1+1)D conformal field theory (CFT) have played a vital role in studying chiral topologically ordered systems. There usually exist multiple degenerate ground states when such states are placed on the torus. The common practice for dealing with this degeneracy within the CFT framework is to take a full correlator on the torus, which includes both holomorphic and antiholomorphic sectors, and decompose it into several conformal blocks. In this paper, we propose a pure chiral approach for the torus wave function construction. By utilizing the operator formalism, the wave functions are written as chiral correlators of holormorphic fields restricted to each individual topological sector. This method is not only conceptually much simpler, but also automatically provides us the anyon eigenbasis of the degenerate ground states (also known as the "minimally entangled states"). As concrete examples, we construct the full set of degenerate ground states for SO($n$)$_1$ and SU($n$)$_1$ chiral spin liquids on the torus, the former of which provide a complete wave function realization of Kitaev's sixteenfold way of anyon theories. We further characterize their topological orders by analytically computing the associated modular $S$ and $T$ matrices.

Matrix product states for Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov wave functions

We provide an efficient and accurate method for converting Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov wave functions into matrix product states (MPSs). These wave functions, also known as Bogoliubov vacua, exhibit a peculiar entanglement structure that the eigenvectors of the reduced density matrix are also Bogoliubov vacua. We exploit this important feature to obtain their optimal MPS approximation and derive an explicit formula for corresponding MPS matrices. The performance of our method is benchmarked with the Kitaev chain and the Majorana-Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice. The approach facilitates the applications of Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov wave functions and is ideally suited for combining with the density-matrix renormalization group method.

Topological Disorder Parameter

We introduce a many-body topological invariant, called the topological disorder parameter (TDP), to characterize gapped quantum phases with global internal symmetry in (2+1)d. TDP is defined as the constant correction that appears in the ground state expectation value of a partial symmetry transformation applied to a connected spatial region $M$, the absolute value of which scales generically as $\exp(-αl+γ)$ where $l$ is the perimeter of $M$ and $γ$ is the TDP. Motivated by a topological quantum field theory interpretation of the operator, we show that $e^γ$ can be related to the quantum dimension of the symmetry defect, and provide a general formula for $γ$ when the entanglement Hamiltonian of the topological phase can be described by a (1+1)d conformal field theory (CFT). A special case of TDP is equivalent to the topological Rényi entanglement entropy when the symmetry is the cyclic permutation of the replica of the gapped phase. We then investigate several examples of lattice models of topological phases, both analytically and numerically, in particular when the assumption of having a CFT edge theory is not satisfied. We also consider an example of partial translation symmetry in Wen's plaquette model and show that the result can be understood using the edge CFT. Our results establish a new tool to detect quantum topological order.

Unveiling a critical stripy state in the triangular-lattice SU(4) spin-orbital model

The simplest spin-orbital model can host a nematic spin-orbital liquid state on the triangular lattice. We provide clear evidence that the ground state of the SU(4) Kugel-Khomskii model on the triangular lattice can be well described by a "single" Gutzwiller projected wave function with an emergent parton Fermi surface, despite it exhibits strong finite-size effect in quasi-one-dimensional cylinders. The finite-size effect can be resolved by the fact that the parton Fermi surface consists of open orbits in the reciprocal space. Thereby, a stripy liquid state is expected in the two-dimensional limit, which preserves the SU(4) symmetry while breaks the translational symmetry by doubling the unit cell along one of the lattice vector directions. It is indicative that these stripes are critical and the central charge is $c=3$, in agreement with the SU(4)$_1$ Wess-Zumino-Witten conformal field theory. All these results are consistent with the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis-Oshikawa-Hastings theorem.

Flux crystals, Majorana metals, and flat bands in exactly solvable spin-orbital liquids

Spin-orbital liquids are quantum disordered states in systems with entangled spin and orbital degrees of freedom. We study exactly solvable spin-orbital models in two dimensions with selected Heisenberg-, Kitaev-, and $Γ$-type interactions, as well as external magnetic fields. These models realize a variety of spin-orbital-liquid phases featuring dispersing Majorana fermions with Fermi surfaces, nodal Dirac or quadratic band touching points, or full gaps. In particular, we show that Zeeman magnetic fields can stabilize nontrivial flux patterns and induce metamagnetic transitions between states with different topological character. Solvable nearest-neighbor biquadratic spin-orbital perturbations can be tuned to stabilize zero-energy flat bands. We discuss in detail the examples of $\mathrm{SO}(2)$- and $\mathrm{SO}(3)$-symmetric spin-orbital models on the square and honeycomb lattices, and use group-theoretical arguments to generalize to $\mathrm{SO}(ν)$-symmetric models with arbitrary integer $ν> 1$. These results extend the list of exactly solvable models with spin-orbital-liquid ground states and highlight the intriguing general features of such exotic phases. Our models are thus excellent starting points for more realistic modellings of candidate materials.

Resonating valence bond realization of spin-1 non-Abelian chiral spin liquid on the torus

We propose resonating valence bond wave functions for a spin-1 system on the torus that realize a non-Abelian chiral spin liquid. The wave functions take the form of infinite dimensional matrix product states constructed from conformal blocks of the $\mathrm{SO}(3)_{1}$ Wess-Zumino-Witten model. This means that they are lattice analogues of the bosonic Moore-Read state introduced in fractional quantum Hall systems. The topological order of this system is revealed by explicit construction of three-fold degenerate ground states and analytical computation of the modular S and T matrices.

Critical properties of the two-dimensional $q$-state clock model

We perform the state-of-the-art tensor network simulations directly in the thermodynamic limit to clarify the critical properties of the $q$-state clock model on the square lattice. We determine accurately the two phase transition temperatures through the singularity of the classical analog of the entanglement entropy, and provide extensive numerical evidences to show that both transitions are of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) type for $q\ge 5$ and that the low-energy physics of this model is well described by the $\mathbb{Z}_q$-deformed sine-Gordon theory. We also determine the characteristic conformal parameters, especially the compactification radius, that govern the critical properties of the intermediate BKT phase.

Efficient tensor network representation for Gutzwiller projected states of paired fermions

Recent work by Wu {\em et al.} [arXiv:1910.11011] proposed a numerical method, so-called matrix product operator-matrix product state (MPO-MPS) method, by which several types of quantum many-body wave functions, in particular, the projected Fermi sea state, can be efficiently represented as a tensor network. In this paper, we generalize the MPO-MPS method to study Gutzwiller projected paired states of fermions, where the maximally localized Wannier orbitals for Bogoliubov quasiparticles/quasiholes have been adapted to improve the computational performance. The study of $SO(3)$-symmetric spin-1 chains reveals that this new method has better performance than variational Monte Carlo for gapped states and similar performance for gapless states. Moreover, we demonstrate that dynamic correlation functions can be easily evaluated by this method cooperating with other MPS-based accurate approaches, such as the Chebyshev MPS method.

Tensor network representations of parton wave functions

Tensor network states and parton wave functions are two pivotal methods for studying quantum many-body systems. This work connects these two subjects as we demonstrate that a variety of parton wave functions, such as projected Fermi sea and projected fermionic or bosonic paired states, can be represented exactly as tensor networks. The results can be compressed into matrix product states with moderate bond dimensions so various physical quantities can be computed efficiently. For the projected Fermi sea, we develop an excellent compression scheme with high fidelity using maximally localized Wannier orbitals. Numerical calculations on two parton wave functions demonstrate that our method exceeds commonly adopted Monte Carlo methods in some aspects. It produces energy and correlation function with very high accuracy that is difficult to achieve using Monte Carlo method. The entanglement measures that were almost impossible to compute before can also be obtained easily using our method.

Edge states for the Kalmeyer-Laughlin wave function

We study lattice wave functions obtained from the SU(2)$_1$ Wess-Zumino-Witten conformal field theory. Following Moore and Read's construction, the Kalmeyer-Laughlin fractional quantum Hall state is defined as a correlation function of primary fields. By an additional insertion of Kac-Moody currents, we associate a wave function to each state of the conformal field theory. These wave functions span the complete Hilbert space of the lattice system. On the cylinder, we study global properties of the lattice states analytically and correlation functions numerically using a Metropolis Monte Carlo method. By comparing short-range bulk correlations, numerical evidence is provided that the states with one current operator represent edge states in the thermodynamic limit. We show that the edge states with one Kac-Moody current of lowest order have a good overlap with low-energy excited states of a local Hamiltonian, for which the Kalmeyer-Laughlin state approximates the ground state. For some states, exact parent Hamiltonians are derived on the cylinder. These Hamiltonians are SU(2) invariant and nonlocal with up to four-body interactions.

Symmetry-protected intermediate trivial phases in quantum spin chains

Symmetry-protected trivial (SPt) phases of matter are the product-state analogue of symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases. This means, SPt phases can be adiabatically connected to a product state by some path that preserves the protecting symmetry. Moreover, SPt and SPT phases can be adiabatically connected to each other when interaction terms that break the symmetries protecting the SPT order are added in the Hamiltonian. It is also known that spin-1 SPT phases in quantum spin chains can emerge as effective intermediate phases of spin-2 Hamiltonians. In this paper we show that a similar scenario is also valid for SPt phases. More precisely, we show that for a given spin-2 quantum chain, effective intermediate spin-1 SPt phases emerge in some regions of the phase diagram, these also being adiabatically connected to non-trivial intermediate SPT phases. We characterize the phase diagram of our model by studying quantities such as the entanglement entropy, symmetry-related order parameters, and 1-site fidelities. Our numerical analysis uses Matrix Product States (MPS) and the infinite Time-Evolving Block Decimation (iTEBD) method to approximate ground states of the system in the thermodynamic limit. Moreover, we provide a field theory description of the possible quantum phase transitions between the SPt phases. Together with the numerical results, such a description shows that the transitions may be described by Conformal Field Theories (CFT) with central charge c=1. Our results are in agreement, and further generalize, those in [Y. Fuji, F. Pollmann, M. Oshikawa, Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 177204 (2015)].

All spin-1 topological phases in a single spin-2 chain

Here we study the emergence of different Symmetry-Protected Topological (SPT) phases in a spin-2 quantum chain. We consider a Heisenberg-like model with bilinear, biquadratic, bicubic, and biquartic nearest-neighbor interactions, as well as uniaxial anisotropy. We show that this model contains four different effective spin-1 SPT phases, corresponding to different representations of the $(\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2) + T$ symmetry group, where $\mathbb{Z}_2$ is some $π$-rotation in the spin internal space and $T$ is time-reversal. One of these phases is equivalent to the usual spin-1 Haldane phase, while the other three are different but also typical of spin-1 systems. The model also exhibits an $SO(5)$-Haldane phase. Moreover, we also find that the transitions between the different effective spin-1 SPT phases are continuous, and can be described by a $c=2$ conformal field theory. At such transitions, indirect evidence suggests a possible effective field theory of four massless Majorana fermions. The results are obtained by approximating the ground state of the system in the thermodynamic limit using Matrix Product States via the infinite Time Evolving Block Decimation method, as well as by effective field theory considerations. Our findings show, for the first time, that different large effective spin-1 SPT phases separated by continuous quantum phase transitions can be stabilized in a simple quantum spin chain.

Criticality in Translation-Invariant Parafermion Chains

In this work we numerically study critical phases in translation-invariant $\mathbb{Z}_N$ parafermion chains with both nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor hopping terms. The model can be mapped to a $\mathbb{Z}_N$ spin model with nearest-neighbor couplings via a generalized Jordan-Wigner transformation and translation invariance ensures that the spin model is always self-dual. We first study the low-energy spectrum of chains with only nearest-neighbor coupling, which are mapped onto standard self-dual $\mathbb{Z}_N$ clock models. For $3\leq N\leq 6$ we match the numerical results to the known conformal field theory(CFT) identification. We then analyze in detail the phase diagram of a $N=3$ chain with both nearest and next-nearest neighbor hopping and six critical phases with central charges being $4/5$, 1 or 2 are found. We find continuous phase transitions between $c=1$ and $c=2$ phases, while the phase transition between $c=4/5$ and $c=1$ is conjectured to be of Kosterlitz-Thouless type.

Excited States in Spin Chains from Conformal Blocks

We develop a method of constructing excited states in one dimensional spin chains which are derived from the $SU(2)_1$ Wess-Zumino-Witten Conformal Field Theory (CFT) using a parent Hamiltonian approach. The resulting systems are equivalent to the Haldane-Shastry model. In our ansatz, correlation functions between primary fields correspond to the ground state of the spin system, whereas excited states are obtained by insertion of descendant fields. Our construction is based on the current algebra of the CFT and emphasizes the close relation between the spectrum of the spin system and the underlying CFT. This general structure might imply that the method could be applied to a wider range of model systems.

Hexagon-singlet solid ansatz for the spin-1 kagome antiferromagnet

We perform a systematic investigation on the hexagon-singlet solid (HSS) states, which are a class of spin liquid candidates for the spin-1 kagome antiferromagnet. With the Schwinger boson representation, we show that all HSS states have exponentially decaying correlations and can be interpreted as a (special) subset of the resonating Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) loop states. We provide a compact tensor network representation of the HSS states, with which we are able to calculate physical observables efficiently. We find that the HSS states have vanishing topological entanglement entropy, suggesting the absence of intrinsic topological order. We also employ the HSS states to perform a variational study of the spin-1 kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnetic model. When we use a restricted HSS ansatz preserving lattice symmetry, the best variational energy per site is found to be $e_0 = -1.3600$. In contrast, when allowing lattice symmetry breaking, we find a trimerized simplex valence bond crystal with a lower energy, $e_0=-1.3871$.

Infinite matrix product states, boundary conformal field theory, and the open Haldane-Shastry model

We show that infinite Matrix Product States (MPS) constructed from conformal field theories can describe ground states of one-dimensional critical systems with open boundary conditions. To illustrate this, we consider a simple infinite MPS for a spin-1/2 chain and derive an inhomogeneous open Haldane-Shastry model. For the spin-1/2 open Haldane-Shastry model, we derive an exact expression for the two-point spin correlation function. We also provide an SU($n$) generalization of the open Haldane-Shastry model and determine its twisted Yangian generators responsible for the highly degenerate multiplets in the energy spectrum.

Methods for detecting charge fractionalization and winding numbers in an interacting fermionic ladder

We consider a spin-1/2 fermionic ladder with spin-orbit coupling and a perpendicular magnetic field, which shares important similarities with topological superconducting wires. We fully characterize the symmetry-protected topological phase of this ladder through the identification of fractionalized edge modes and non-trivial spin winding numbers. We propose an experimental scheme to engineer such a ladder system with cold atoms in optical lattices, and we present two protocols that can be used to extract the topological signatures from density and momentum-distribution measurements. We then consider the presence of interactions and discuss the effects of a contact on-site repulsion on the topological phase. We find that such interactions could enhance the extension of the topological phase in certain parameters regimes.

Chiral projected entangled-pair state with topological order

We show that projected entangled-pair states (PEPS) can describe chiral topologically ordered phases. For that, we construct a simple PEPS for spin-1/2 particles in a two-dimensional lattice. We reveal a symmetry in the local projector of the PEPS that gives rise to the global topological character. We also extract characteristic quantities of the edge conformal field theory using the bulk-boundary correspondence.

Quantum spin models for the SU(n)_1 Wess-Zumino-Witten model

We propose 1D and 2D lattice wave functions constructed from the SU(n)_1 Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) model and derive their parent Hamiltonians. When all spins in the lattice transform under SU(n) fundamental representations, we obtain a two-body Hamiltonian in 1D, including the SU(n) Haldane-Shastry model as a special case. In 2D, we show that the wave function converges to a class of Halperin's multilayer fractional quantum Hall states and belongs to chiral spin liquids. Our result reveals a hidden SU(n) symmetry for this class of Halperin states. When the spins sit on bipartite lattices with alternating fundamental and conjugate representations, we provide numerical evidence that the state in 1D exhibits quantum criticality deviating from the expected behaviors of the SU(n)_1 WZW model, while in 2D they are chiral spin liquids being consistent with the prediction of the SU(n)_1 WZW model.

Symmetries and boundary theories for chiral Projected Entangled Pair States

We investigate the topological character of lattice chiral Gaussian fermionic states in two dimensions possessing the simplest descriptions in terms of projected entangled-pair states (PEPS). They are ground states of two different kinds of Hamiltonians. The first one, $\mathcal H_\mathrm{ff}$, is local, frustration-free, and gapless. It can be interpreted as describing a quantum phase transition between different topological phases. The second one, $\mathcal H_\mathrm{fb}$ is gapped, and has hopping terms scaling as $1/r^3$ with the distance $r$. The gap is robust against local perturbations, which allows us to define a Chern number for the PEPS. As for (non-chiral) topological PEPS, the non-trivial topological properties can be traced down to the existence of a symmetry in the virtual modes that are used to build the state. Based on that symmetry, we construct string-like operators acting on the virtual modes that can be continuously deformed without changing the state. On the torus, the symmetry implies that the ground state space of the local parent Hamiltonian is two-fold degenerate. By adding a string wrapping around the torus one can change one of the ground states into the other. We use the special properties of PEPS to build the boundary theory and show how the symmetry results in the appearance of chiral modes, and a universal correction to the area law for the zero Rényi entropy.

Topology and Criticality in Resonating Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki loop Spin Liquid States

We exploit a natural Projected Entangled-Pair State (PEPS) representation for the resonating Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki loop (RAL) state. By taking advantage of PEPS-based analytical and numerical methods, we characterize the RAL states on various two-dimensional lattices. On square and honeycomb lattices, these states are critical since the dimer-dimer correlations decay as a power law. On kagome lattice, the RAL state has exponentially decaying correlation functions, supporting the scenario of a gapped spin liquid. We provide further evidence that the RAL state on the kagome lattice is a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquid, by identifying the four topological sectors and computing the topological entropy. Furthermore, we construct a one-parameter family of PEPS states interpolating between the RAL state and a short-range Resonating Valence Bond state and find a critical point, consistent with the fact that the two states belong to two different phases. We also perform a variational study of the spin-1 kagome Heisenberg model using this one-parameter PEPS.

Lattice Laughlin States of Bosons and Fermions at Filling Fractions $1/q$

We introduce a two-parameter family of strongly-correlated wave functions for bosons and fermions in lattices. One parameter, $q$, is connected to the filling fraction. The other one, $η$, allows us to interpolate between the lattice limit ($η=1$) and the continuum limit ($η\to 0^+$) of families of states appearing in the context of the fractional quantum Hall effect or the Calogero-Sutherland model. We give evidence that the main physical properties along the interpolation remain the same. Finally, in the lattice limit, we derive parent Hamiltonians for those wave functions and in 1D, we determine part of the low energy spectrum.

Projected BCS states and spin Hamiltonians for the SO(n)_1 Wess-Zumino-Witten model

We propose a class of projected BCS wave functions and derive their parent spin Hamiltonians. These wave functions can be formulated as infinite Matrix Product States constructed by chiral correlators of Majorana fermions. In 1D, the spin Hamiltonians can be viewed as SO(n) generalizations of Haldane-Shastry models. We numerically compute the spin-spin correlation functions and Renyi entropies for n=5 and 6. Together with the results for n=3 and 4, we conclude that these states are critical and their low-energy effective theory is the SO(n)_1 Wess-Zumino-Witten model. In 2D, we show that the projected BCS states are chiral spin liquids, which support non-Abelian anyons for odd n and Abelian anyons for even n.

Gutzwiller Projected wavefunctions in the fermonic theory of S=1 spin chains

We study in this paper a series of Gutzwiller Projected wavefunctions for S=1 spin chains obtained from a fermionic mean-field theory for general S>1/2 spin systems [Phys. Rev. B 81, 224417] applied to the bilinear-biquadratic (J-K) model. The free-fermion mean field states before the projection are 1D paring states. By comparing the energies and correlation functions of the projected pairing states with those obtained from known results, we show that the optimized Gutzwiller projected wavefunctions are very good trial ground state wavefunctions for the antiferromagnetic bilinear-biquadratic model in the regime K<J, (J>0). We find that different topological phases of the free-fermion paring states correspond to different spin phases: the weak pairing (topologically non-trivial) state gives rise to the Haldane phase, whereas the strong pairing (topologically trivial) state gives rise to the dimer phase. In particular the mapping between the Haldane phase and Gutwziller wavefunction is exact at the AKLT point K=1/3. The transition point between the two phases determined by the optimized Gutzwiller Projected wavefunction is in good agreement with the known result. The effect of Z2 gauge fluctuations above the mean field theory is analyzed.

Momentum polarization: an entanglement measure of topological spin and chiral central charge

Topologically ordered states are quantum states of matter with topological ground state degeneracy and quasi-particles carrying fractional quantum numbers and fractional statistics. The topological spin $θ_a=2πh_a$ is an important property of a topological quasi-particle, which is the Berry phase obtained in the adiabatic self-rotation of the quasi-particle by $2π$. For chiral topological states with robust chiral edge states, another fundamental topological property is the edge state chiral central charge $c$. In this paper we propose a new approach to compute the topological spin and chiral central charge in lattice models by defining a new quantity named as the momentum polarization. Momentum polarization is defined on the cylinder geometry as a universal subleading term in the average value of a "partial translation operator". We show that the momentum polarization is a quantum entanglement property which can be computed from the reduced density matrix, and our analytic derivation based on edge conformal field theory shows that the momentum polarization measures the combination $h_a-\frac{c}{24}$ of topological spin and central charge. Numerical results are obtained for two example systems, the non-Abelian phase of the honeycomb lattice Kitaev model, and the $ν=1/2$ Laughlin state of a fractional Chern insulator described by a variational Monte Carlo wavefunction. The numerical results verifies the analytic formula with high accuracy, and further suggests that this result remains robust even when the edge states cannot be described by a conformal field theory. Our result provides a new efficient approach to characterize and identify topological states of matter from finite size numerics.

Effective field theory for the SO(n) bilinear-biquadratic spin chain

We present a low-energy effective field theory to describe the SO(n) bilinear-biquadratic spin chain. We start with n=6 and construct the effective theory by using six Majorana fermions. After determining various correlation functions we characterize the phases and establish the relation between the effective theories for SO(6) and SO(5). Together with the known results for n=3 and 4, a reduction mechanism is proposed to understand the ground state for arbitrary SO(n). Also, we provide a generalization of the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorem for SO(n). The implications of our results for entanglement and correlation functions are discussed.

Entanglement and SU(n) symmetry in one-dimensional valence bond solid states

Here we evaluate the many-body entanglement properties of a generalized SU(n) valence bond solid state on a chain. Our results follow from a derivation of the transfer matrix of the system which, in combination with symmetry properties, allows for a new, elegant and straightforward evaluation of different entanglement measures. In particular, the geometric entanglement per block, correlation length, von Neumann and Rényi entropies of a block, localizable entanglement and entanglement length are obtained in a very simple way. All our results are in agreement with previous derivations for the SU(2) case.

Intermediate Haldane phase in spin-2 quantum chains with uniaxial anisotropy

We provide evidence of an intermediate Haldane phase in a spin-2 quantum chain. By combining effective field theory and numerical approaches, we show that the phase diagram of the proposed model includes SO(5) Haldane, intermediate Haldane, and large-D phases. We determine the characteristic properties of these phases, including edge states, string order parameters, and degeneracies in the entanglement spectrum. The symmetries responsible for the degeneracy patterns observed in the entanglement spectrum are also discussed.

Majorana Edge States in Interacting Two-chain Ladders of Fermions

In this work we study interacting spinless fermions on a two-chain ladder with inter-chain pair tunneling while single-particle tunneling is suppressed at low energy. The model embodies a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry associated with the fermion parity on each chain. We find that when the system is driven to the strong-coupling phase by the pair tunneling, Majorana excitations appear on the boundary. Such Majorana edge states correspond to two-fold degeneracy of ground states distinguished by different fermion parity on each chain, thus representing a generalization of one-dimensional topological superconductors. We also characterize the stability of the ground state degeneracy against local perturbations. Lattice fermion models realizing such effective field theory are discussed.

Phase diagram of the SO(n) bilinear-biquadratic chain from many-body entanglement

Here we investigate the phase diagram of the SO(n) bilinear-biquadratic quantum spin chain by studying the global quantum correlations of the ground state. We consider the cases of n=3,4 and 5 and focus on the geometric entanglement in the thermodynamic limit. Apart from capturing all the known phase transitions, our analysis shows a number of novel distinctive behaviors in the phase diagrams which we conjecture to be general and valid for arbitrary n. In particular, we provide an intuitive argument in favor of an infinite entanglement length in the system at a purely-biquadratic point. Our results are also compared to other methods, such as fidelity diagrams.

Exact renormalization in quantum spin chains

We introduce a real-space exact renormalization group method to find exactly solvable quantum spin chains and their ground states. This method allows us to provide a complete list for exact solutions within SU(2) symmetric quantum spin chains with $S\leq 4$ and nearest-neighbor interactions, as well as examples with S=5. We obtain two classes of solutions: One of them converges to the fixed points of renormalization group and the ground states are matrix product states. Another one does not have renormalization fixed points and the ground states are partially ferromagnetic states.

Topologically distinct classes of valence bond solid states with their parent Hamiltonians

We introduce a general method to construct one-dimensional translationally invariant valence bond solid states with a built-in Lie group $G$ and derive their matrix product representations. The general strategies to find their parent Hamiltonians are provided so that the valence bond solid states are their unique ground states. For quantum integer spin-$S$ chains, we discuss two topologically distinct classes of valence bond solid states: One consists of two virtual SU(2) spin-$J$ variables in each site and another is formed by using two $SO(2S+1)$ spinors. Among them, a new spin-1 fermionic valence bond solid state, its parent Hamiltonian, and its properties are discussed in detail. Moreover, two types of valence bond solid states with SO(5) symmetry are further generalized and their respective properties are analyzed as well.
