Photo-induced Antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic Transition and Electronic Structure Modulation in GdBaCo$_2$O$_{5.5}$ Thin Film

We investigate both the ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) ultrafast dynamics of a strongly correlated oxide system, GdBaCo$_2$O$_{5.5}$ thin film, by time-resolved x-ray magnetic circular dichroism in reflectivity (XMCDR) and resonant magnetic x-ray diffraction (RMXD). A photo-induced AFM-FM transition characterized by an increase of the transient XMCDR beyond the unpumped value and a decay of RMXD was observed. The photon-energy dependence of the transient XMCDR and reflectivity can likely be interpreted as a concomitant photo-induced spinstate transition.

Photoinduced Transient States of Antiferromagnetic Orderings in La${}_{1/3}$Sr${}_{2/3}$FeO${}_{3}$ and SrFeO${}_{3}$ Thin Films Observed through Time-resolved Resonant Soft X-ray Scattering

The relationship between the magnetic interaction and photoinduced dynamics in antiferromagnetic perovskites is investigated in this study. In La${}_{1/3}$Sr${}_{2/3}$FeO${}_{3}$ thin films, commensurate spin ordering is accompanied by charge disproportionation, whereas SrFeO${}_{3}$ thin films show incommensurate helical antiferromagnetic spin ordering due to increased ferromagnetic coupling compared to La${}_{1/3}$Sr${}_{2/3}$FeO${}_{3}$. To understand the photoinduced spin dynamics in these materials, we investigate the spin ordering through time-resolved resonant soft X-ray scattering. In La${}_{1/3}$Sr${}_{2/3}$FeO${}_{3}$, ultrafast quenching of the magnetic ordering within 130 fs through a nonthermal process is observed, triggered by charge transfer between the Fe atoms. We compare this to the photoinduced dynamics of the helical magnetic ordering of SrFeO${}_{3}$. We find that the change in the magnetic coupling through optically induced charge transfer can offer an even more efficient channel for spin-order manipulation.

Hard and soft x-ray photoemission spectroscopy study of the new Kondo system SmO thin film

SmO thin film is a new Kondo system showing a resistivity upturn around 10 K and was theoretically proposed to have a topologically nontrivial band structure. We have performed hard x-ray and soft x-ray photoemission spectroscopy to elucidate the electronic structure of SmO. From the Sm 3$d$ core-level spectra, we have estimated the valence of Sm to be $\sim$2.96, proving that the Sm has a mixed valence. The valence-band photoemission spectra exhibit a clear Fermi edge originating from the Sm 5$d$-derived band. The present finding is consistent with the theory suggesting a possible topological state in SmO and show that rare-earth monoxides or their heterostructures can be a new playground for the interplay of strong electron correlation and spin-orbit coupling.

Element-selective tracking ultrafast demagnetization process in Co/Pt multilayer thin films by the resonant magneto-optical Kerr effect

We examined the photo-induced dynamics of ferromagnetic Co/Pt thin films demonstrating perpendicular magnetic anisotropy with element specificity using resonant polar magneto-optical Kerr effect measurements at Pt~N${}_{6,7}$ and Co~M${}_{2,3}$ edges with an x-ray free electron laser. The obtained results showed a clear element dependence of photo-induced demagnetization time scales: $τ_\textrm{demag.}^\textrm{Co}=80\pm60~\textrm{fs}$ and $τ_\textrm{demag.}^\textrm{Pt}=640\pm140~\textrm{fs}$. This dependence is explained by the induced moment of the Pt atom by current flow from the Co layer through the interfaces. The observed magnetization dynamics of Co and Pt can be attributed to the characteristics of photo-induced Co/Pt thin film phenomena including all-optical switching.

Intrinsic 2D Ferromagnetism in V5Se8 Epitaxial Thin Films

The discoveries of intrinsic ferromagnetism in atomically-thin van der Waals crystals have opened up a new research field enabling fundamental studies on magnetism at two-dimensional (2D) limit as well as development of magnetic van der Waals heterostructures. To date, a variety of 2D ferromagnetism has been explored mainly by mechanically exfoliating 'originally ferromagnetic (FM)' van der Waals crystals, while bottom-up approach by thin film growth technique has demonstrated emergent 2D ferromagnetism in a variety of 'originally non-FM' van der Waals materials. Here we demonstrate that V5Se8 epitaxial thin films grown by molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE) exhibit emergent 2D ferromagnetism with intrinsic spin polarization of the V 3d electrons despite that the bulk counterpart is 'originally antiferromagnetic (AFM)'. Moreover, thickness-dependence measurements reveal that this newly-developed 2D ferromagnet could be classified as an itinerant 2D Heisenberg ferromagnet with weak magnetic anisotropy, broadening a lineup of 2D magnets to those potentially beneficial for future spintronics applications.

Photoemission and Dynamical Mean Field Theory Study of Electronic Correlation in a $t_{2g}^{5}$ Metal of SrRhO$_{3}$ Thin Film

Perovskite rhodates are characterized by intermediate strengths of both electronic correlation as well as spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and usually behave as moderately correlated metals. A recent publication (Phys. Rev. B 95, 245121(2017)) on epitaxial SrRhO$_3$ thin films unexpectedly reported a bad-metallic behavior and suggested the occurrence of antiferromagnetism below 100 K. We studied this SrRhO$_3$ thin film by hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy and found a very small density of states (DOS) at Fermi level, which is consistent with the reported bad-metallic behavior. However, this negligible DOS persists up to room temperature, which contradicts with the explanation of antiferromagnetic transition at around 100 K. We also employed electronic structure calculations within the framework of density functional theory and dynamical mean-field theory. In contrast to the experimental results, our calculations indicate metallic behavior of both bulk SrRhO$_3$ and the SrRhO$_3$ thin film. The thin film exhibits stronger correlation effects than the bulk, but the correlation effects are not sufficient to drive a transition to an insulating state. The calculated uniform magnetic susceptibility is substantially larger in the thin film than that in the bulk. The role of SOC was also investigated and only a moderate modulation of the electronic structure was observed. Hence SOC is not expected to play an important role for electronic correlation in SrRhO$_3$.

Ultrafast demagnetization of Pt magnetic moment in L1${}_0$-FePt probed by hard x-ray free electron laser

We demonstrate ultrafast magnetization dynamics in a 5d transition metal using circularly-polarized x-ray free electron laser in the hard x-ray region. A decay time of light-induced demagnetization of L1${}_0$-FePt was determined to be $τ_\textrm{Pt} = 0.6\ \textrm{ps}$ using time-resolved x-ray magnetic circular dichroism at the Pt L${}_3$ edge, whereas magneto-optical Kerr measurements indicated the decay time for total magnetization as $τ_\textrm{total} = 0.1\ \textrm{ps}$. A transient magnetic state with the photo-modulated magnetic coupling between the 3d and 5d elements is firstly demonstrated.

Engineering spin-orbital magnetic insulator by tailoring superlattices

Novel interplay of spin-orbit coupling and electron correlations in complex Ir oxides recently emerged as a new paradigm for correlated electron physics. Because of a large spin-orbit coupling of ~0.5 eV, which is comparable to the transfer energy t and the crystal field splitting $Δ$ and Coulomb U, a variety of ground states including magnetic insulator, band insulator, semimetal and metal, shows up in a narrow materials phase space. Utilizing such subtle competition of the ground states, we successfully tailor a spin-orbital magnetic insulator out of a semimetal SrIrO$_3$ by controlling dimensionality using superlattice of [(SrIrO$_3$)$_m$, SrTiO$_3$] and show that a magnetic ordering triggers the transition to magnetic insulator. Those results can be described well by a first-principles calculation. This study is an important step towards the design and the realization of topological phases in complex Ir oxides with very strong spin-orbit coupling.

Fe-resonant valence band photoemission and oxygen NEXAFS study on La1-xSrxFe0.75Ni0.25O3-δ

Iron resonant valance band photoemission spectra of Sr substituted LaFe0.75Ni0.25 O3-δ have been recorded across the Fe 2p - 3d absorption threshold to obtain Fe specific spectral information on the 3d projected partial density of states. Comparison with La1-xSrxFeO3 resonant VB PES literature data suggests that substitution of Fe by Ni forms electron holes which are mainly O 2p character. Substitution of La by Sr increases the hole concentration to an extent that the eg structure vanishes. The variation of the eg and t2g structures is paralleled by the changes in the electrical conductivity.

High temperature oxygen NEXAFS valence band spectra and conductivity of LaFe3/4Ni1/4O3 from 300 K to 773 K

LaFe3/4Ni1/4O3 was subjected to oxygen near edge x-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy for 300 K < T < 773 K. The spectra show in the pre-edge a small hole doped peak originating from Ni substitution. The relative spectral weight of this transition to the weight of the hybridized O(2p) - Fe(3d) transitions scales with T and has a maximum at around 600 K. The characteristic energies of the thermal activated spectral intensity and conductivity suggest that the concentration of charge transferred electrons from O(2p) to Ni(3d) increases and that the pre-edges account in part for the polaron activated transport.

The importance of inter-site coherences in the x-ray absorption spectra of mixed-valent systems

We study the importance of inter-site coherences and quantum interference effects in the x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) of mixed-valent systems. We demonstrate its importance, first for a simple diatomic mixed-valent molecule to elucidate the physics involved, and finally for mixed-valent Ti oxides, using a model calculation including full spin and orbital multiplicities. Our calculations demonstrate the inefficacy of conventional approaches of describing the XAS from mixed-valent systems as incoherent combinations of XAS from the pure-valent end members, and that multiplets forbidden in the single-site approximation can be reached within a multi-site description. These conclusions play an important role in the interpretation of XAS and resonant x-ray scattering (RXS) in terms of the electronic structure of strongly correlated systems.
