Ab initio study on the possible magnetic topological semimetallic state in MnMg$_{2}$O$_{4}$}

We study the electronic state of an inverse spinel compound MnMg$_{2}$O$_{4}$ based on first-principles calculations. The high-spin state is realized in Mn ions on the diamond lattice, resulting in that this material is found to be a half-metallic semimetal with the minority spin-gap about 3eV, and also with line nodes in the Brillouin zone. The intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) is also computed as a function of the chemical potential of the system assuming the rigid band structure, and is found to exhibit a peak structure with a maximum value of 200 S/cm at only 15 meV above the Fermi level. The relation between the large AHC and Berry curvature in the Brillouin zone is also discussed.

Effect of Element Doping and Substitution on the Electronic Structure and Macroscopic Magnetic Properties of SmFe$_{12}$-based Compounds

The mechanisms underlying the enhancement of magnetic anisotropies (MAs) of Sm ions, owing to valence electrons at the Sm site and the screened nuclear charges of ligands, are clarified using a detailed analysis of crystal fields (CF). In order to investigate the finite-temperature magnetic properties, we developed an effective spin model for SmFe$_{12}X$ ($X$=H, B, C, and N) and SmFe$_{11}M$ ($M$=Ti, V, and Co), where the magnetic moments, CF parameters, and exchange fields were determined by first-principle calculations. Using this model, the MA constants and magnetization curves at finite temperatures were investigated using a recently introduced analytical method [T. Yoshioka, H. Tsuchiura, and P. Novák, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 102}, 184410 (2020)]. In SmFe$_{12}X$, the doped light elements $X$ are assumed to be at the $2b$ site, and in SmFe$_{11}M$, the substitution site of Fe is systematically investigated for all inequivalent $8f$, $8i$, and $8j$ sites. We found that the first-order MA constant $K_1$ is increased by a factor of about two when hydrogen is doped to the $2b$ site and when Fe is replaced by Ti or V at the $8j$ site, owing to the attraction of the prolate $4f$ electron cloud to the screened positive charges of the surrounding ligand ions. We found that when Fe is replaced by Co, the MA increases at all temperatures regardless of the substitution site. The substituted Co attracts electrons, which reduces the electron density in the region from the Sm site to the empty $2b$ site. This causes the $4f$ electron cloud at the Sm site to be fixed along the $c$-axis direction, which improves the MA. The calculated temperature dependence of $K_1(T)$ and $K_2(T)$ in SmFe$_{11}$Co qualitatively reproduces the experimental results in the case of Sm(Co$_x$Fe$_{1-x}$)$_{12}$ for $x$=0.1 and 0.07.

High-temperature dependence of anomalous Ettingshausen effect in SmCo$_5$-type permanent magnets

The anomalous Ettingshausen effect (AEE) in SmCo$_5$-type permanent magnets has been investigated in the high-temperature range from room temperature to around 600 K. The anomalous Ettingshausen coefficient of the SmCo$_5$ and (SmGd)Co$_5$ magnets monotonically increases with increasing the temperature and shows the similar temperature dependence, while the coefficient of SmCo$_5$ is slightly larger than that of (SmGd)Co$_5$ at high temperatures. The dimensionless figure of merit for AEE in SmCo$_5$ at high temperatures is much greater than the previous record obtained for the anomalous Nernst effect. The observed high-temperature behavior of AEE is discussed based on the first-principles calculations of transverse transport coefficients.

Dynamical instability in the S=1 Bose-Hubbard model

We study the dynamical instabilities of superfluid flows in the S=1 Bose-Hubbard model. The time evolution of each spin component in a condensate is calculated based on the dynamical Gutzwiller approximation for a wide range of interactions, from a weakly correlated regime to a strongly correlated regime near the Mott-insulator transition. Owing to the spin-dependent interactions, the superfluid flow of the spin-1 condensate decays at a different critical momentum from a spinless case when the interaction strength is the same. We furthermore calculate the dynamical phase diagram of this model and clarify that the obtained phase boundary has very different features depending on whether the average number of particles per site is even or odd. Finally, we analyze the density and spin modulations that appear in association with the dynamical instability. We find that spin modulations are highly sensitive to the presence of a uniform magnetic field.

Density Modulations Associated with the Dynamical Instability in the Bose-Hubbard Model

A superfluid flow beyond a critical momentum in an optical lattice decays drastically by the interplay between nonlinearity due to the interparticle interactions in Bose-Einstein condensate and periodicity of the lattice; this instability is called dynamical instability. The complex density modulational profiles after the condensate becomes unstable observed experimentally is not completely understood, while the dynamical instability has been studied theoretically and experimentally. In this paper, we analyze the density modulation of condensates as a precursor of the dynamical instability in the two-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model. Our analysis has clarified the unexplored properties of the density modulations associated with the dynamical instability at low filling and in a wide range of interactions, while the previous works have analyzed the density modulation on the basis of Gross-Pitaevskii equation under the specific condition that one-dimensional optical lattice is very shallow and the filling is very large. The numerical simulations based on the dynamical Gutzwiller approximation elucidate that the principal mode of density modulation highly depends on interaction strength U and the momentum acceleration rate. We briefly discuss these features with the stability phase diagram calculated on the basis of the Bogoliubov theory.

Crossover between BCS Superconductor and Doped Mott Insulator of d-wave Pairing State in Two-Dimensional Hubbard Model

With high-Tc cuprates in mind, properties of correlated dx2-y2-wave superconducting (SC) and antiferromagnetic (AF) states are studied for the Hubbard (t-t'-U) model on square lattices, using a variational Monte Carlo method. We employ simple trial wave functions including only crucial parameters, such as a doublon-holon binding factor indispensable to describe correlated SC and normal states as doped Mott insulators. U/t, t'/t and δ(doping rate) dependence of relevant quantities are systematically calculated. As U/t increases, a sharp crossover of SC properties occurs at U_co/t \sim 10 from a conventional BCS type to a kinetic-energy-driven type for any t'/t. As δdecreases, U_co/t is smoothly connected to the Mott transition point at half filling. For U/t\lsim 5, steady superconductivity corresponding to the cuprates is not found, whereas the d-wave SC correlation function Pd^\infty rapidly increases for U/t\gsim 6 and becomes maximum at U=U_co. Comparing the δdependence of Pd^\infty with experimentally observed dome-shaped Tc and condensation energy, we find that the effective value of $U$ for the cuprates should be larger than the band width, for which the t-J model is valid. Analyzing the kinetic energy, we reveal that for U>U_co only doped holes (electrons) become charge carriers, which will make a small Fermi surface (hole pocket), but for U<U_co all the electrons (holes) contribute to conduction and will make an ordinary large Fermi surface, which is contradictory to the feature of cuprates. By introducing a proper negative (positive) t'/t, the SC (AF) state is stabilized. In the underdoped regime, the strength of SC for U>U_co is determined by two factors, i.e., the AF spin correlation, which creates singlet pairs (pseudogap), and the charge mobility dominated by Mott physics.

Mott Transition and Spin Structures of Spin-1 Bosons in Two-Dimensional Optical Lattice at Unit Filling

We study the ground state properties of spin-1 bosons in a two-dimensional optical lattice, by applying a variational Monte Carlo method to the S=1 Bose-Hubbard model on a square lattice at unit filling. A doublon-holon binding factor introduced in the trial state provides a noticeable improvement in the variational energy over the conventional Gutzwiller wave function and allows us to deal effectively with the inter-site correlations of particle densities and spins. We systematically show how spin-dependent interactions modify the superfluid-Mott insulator transitions in the S=1 Bose-Hubbard model due to the interplay between the density and spin fluctuations of bosons. Furthermore, regarding the magnetic phases in the Mott region, the calculated spin structure factor elucidates the emergence of nematic and ferromagnetic spin orders for antiferromagnetic ($U_2>0$) and ferromagnetic ($U_2<0$) couplings, respectively.
