A tale of two kinds of exceptional point in a hydrogen molecule

We study the parity and time-reversal ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetric quantum physics in a non-Hermitian non-relativistic hydrogen molecule with local (Hubbard type) Coulomb interaction. We consider non-Hermiticity generated from both kinetic and orbital energies of the atoms and encounter the existence of two different types of exceptional points (EPs) in pairs. These two kinds of EP are characteristically different and depend differently on the interaction strength. Our discovery may open the gates of a rich physics emerging out of a simple Hamiltonian resembling a two-site Hubbard model.

Parity-time symmetry-breaking mechanism of dynamic Mott transitions in dissipative systems

We describe the critical behavior of electric field-driven (dynamic) Mott insulator-to-metal transitions in dissipative Fermi and Bose systems in terms of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians invariant under simultaneous parity (P) and time-reversal (T) operations. The dynamic Mott transition is identified as a PT symmetry-breaking phase transition, with the Mott insulating state corresponding to the regime of unbroken PT symmetry with a real energy spectrum. We establish that the imaginary part of the Hamiltonian arises from the combined effects of the driving field and inherent dissipation. We derive the renormalization and collapse of the Mott gap at the dielectric breakdown and describe the resulting critical behavior of transport characteristics. The obtained critical exponent is in an excellent agreement with experimental findings.

Zero temperature dynamics of the Hubbard model in infinite dimensions: A local moment approach

The local moment approach (LMA) has presented itself as a powerful semi-analytical quantum impurity solver (QIS) in the context of the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) for the periodic Anderson model and it correctly captures the low energy Kondo scale for the single impurity model, having excellent agreement with the Bethe ansatz and numerical renormalization group results. However, the most common correlated lattice model, the Hubbard model, has not been explored well within the LMA+DMFT framework beyond the insulating phase. Here in our work, within the framework we attempt to complete the phase diagram of the single band Hubbard model at zero temperature. Our formalism is generic to any particle filling and can be extended to finite temperature. We contrast our results with another QIS, namely the iterated perturbation theory (IPT) and show that the second spectral moment sum-rule improves better as the Hubbard interaction strength grows stronger in LMA, whereas it severely breaks down after the Mott transition in IPT. We also show that, in the metallic phase, the low-energy scaling of the spectral density leads to universality which extends to infinite frequency range at infinite correlation strength (strong-coupling). At large interaction strength, the off half-filling spectral density forms a pseudogap near the Fermi level and filling-controlled Mott transition occurs as one approaches the half-filling. Finally we study optical properties and find universal features such as absorption peak position governed by the low-energy scale and a doping independent crossing point, often dubbed as the "isosbestic point" in experiments.

Transport and Spectra in the Half-filled Hubbard Model: A Dynamical Mean Field Study

We study the issues of scaling and universality in spectral and transport properties of the infinite dimensional particle--hole symmetric (half-filled) Hubbard model within dynamical mean field theory. One of the simplest and extensively used impurity solvers, namely the iterated perturbation theory approach is reformulated to avoid problems such as analytic continuation of Matsubara frequency quantities or calculating multi-dimensional integrals, while taking full account of the very sharp structures in the Green's functions that arise close to the Mott transitions and in the Mott insulator regime. We demonstrate its viability for the half-filled Hubbard model. Previous known results are reproduced within the present approach. The universal behavior of the spectral functions in the Fermi liquid regime is emphasized, and adiabatic continuity to the non-interacting limit is demonstrated. The dc resistivity in the metallic regime is known to be a non-monotonic function of temperature with a `coherence peak'. This feature is shown to be a universal feature occurring at a temperature roughly equal to the low energy scale of the system. A comparison to pressure dependent dc resistivity experiments on Selenium doped NiS$_2$ yields qualitatively good agreement. Resistivity hysteresis across the Mott transition is shown to be described qualitatively within the present framework. A direct comparison of the thermal hysteresis observed in V$_2$O$_3$ with our theoretical results yields a value of the hopping integral, which we find to be in the range estimated through first-principle methods. Finally, a systematic study of optical conductivity is carried out and the changes in absorption as a result of varying interaction strength and temperature are identified.
