On the Lambert conformal conical projection and the general map of the Russian Empire

The problem of drawing geographical maps is the one of mapping a subset of the sphere, representing a country or some other region on the surface of the Earth, into the Euclidean plane, minimising certain distortion properties that are specified in advance. It is known that from the purely mathematical point of view, this is an extremely difficult problem. One of Leonhard Euler's duties during his first stay at the Imperial Academy of Sciences of Saint Petersburg (1727-1741) was to help establishing maps of the Russian Empire. He worked on this project under the direction of the famous French geographer Joseph-Nicolas Delisle, who was the head of the astronomy and geography departments of the Academy. The general map of the Russian Empire, together with several maps of its particular regions were published under Euler's direction in the so-called Russian Atlas in 1745. In his later memoir ``De proiectione geographica De Lisliana in mappa generali imperii russici usitata'', written in 1777, Euler developed the mathematical theory of the method used by Delisle on a heuristic basis, which he himself used for drawing the general map of the Russian Empire. This method usually carries now the name Delisle--Euler map. In a previous paper, the first two authors of the present paper compared the Delisle--Euler map with several other maps of the conical type, with respect to various mathematical distorsion properties. They showed that this map is the best one from all the points of view considered, when it is applied to the drawing of the Russian Empire. In the present paper, we compare the Euler--Delisle map with a map which was not considered in the paper mentioned, namely, the so-called Lambert conformal conical projection, applied to the same region of the Earth. We show that the latter is better in several respects than all the other maps considered in the previous paper, including the Delisle--Euler map.

Universal commensurability augmented Teichmüller space and moduli space

It is known that every finitely unbranched covering $α:\widetilde{S}_{g(α)}\rightarrow S$ of a compact Riemann surface $S$ with genus $g\geq2$ induces an isometric embedding $Γ_α$ from the Teichmüller space $T(S)$ to the Teichüller space $T(\widetilde{S}_{g(α)})$. Actually, it has been showed that the isometric embedding $Γ_α$ can be extended isometrically to the augmented Teichmüller space $\widehat{T}(S)$ of $T(S)$. Using this result, we construct a directed limit $\widehat{T}_{\infty}(S)$ of augmented Teichmüller spaces, where the index runs over all finitely unbranched coverings of $S$. Then, we show that the action of the universal commensurability modular group $Mod_{\infty}(S)$ can extend isometrically on $\widehat{T}_{\infty}(S)$. Furthermore, for any $X_{\infty}\in T_{\infty}(S)$, its orbit of the action of the universal commensurability modular group $Mod_{\infty}(S)$ on the universal commensurability augmented Teichmüller space $\widehat{T}_{\infty}(S)$ is dense. Finally, we also construct a directed limit $\widehat{M}_{\infty}(S)$ of augmented moduli spaces by characteristic towers and show that the subgroup $Caut(π_{1}(S))$ of $Mod_{\infty}(S)$ acts on $\widehat{T}_{\infty}(S)$ to produce $\widehat{M}_{\infty}(S)$ as the quotient.

Extremal length functions are log-plurisubharmonic

In this paper, we show that the extremal length functions on Teichmüller space are log-plurisubharmonic. As a corollary, we obtain an alternative proof of L.Liu and W.Su's results on the plurisubharmonicity of extremal length functions. We also obtain alternative proofs of S.Krushkal's results that a function defined by the Teichmüller distance from a reference point is plurisubharmonic, and the Teichmüller space is hyperconvex. To show the log-plurisubharmonicity, we give an explicit formula of the Levi form of the extremal length functions in generic case.

Geometry of the Gromov product : Geometry at infinity of Teichmüller space

This paper is devoted to study of transformations on metric spaces. It is done in an effort to produce qualitative version of quasi-isometries which takes into account the asymptotic behavior of the Gromov product in hyperbolic spaces. We characterize a quotient semigroup of such transformations on Teichmüller space by use of simplicial automorphisms of the complex of curves, and we will see that such transformation is recognized as a "coarsification" of isometries on Teichmüller space which is rigid at infinity. We also show a hyperbolic characteristic that any finite dimensional Teichmüller space does not admit (quasi)-invertible rough-homothety.

A rigidity theorem for holomorphic disks in Teichmüller space

In this paper, we discuss a rigidity property for holomorphic disks in Teichmüller space. In fact, we give a refinement of Tanigawa's rigidity theorem. We will also treat the rigidity property of holomorphic disks for complex manifolds. We observe the rigidity property is valid for bounded strictly pseudoconvex domains with $C^{2}$-boundaries, but the rigidity property does not hold for product manifolds.

On extendibility of a map induced by Bers isomorphism

Let $S$ be a closed Riemann surface of genus $g(\geqq 2)$ and set $\dot{S}=S \setminus \{\hat{z}_0 \}$. Then we have the composed map $φ\circ r$ of a map $r: T(S) \times U \rightarrow F(S)$ and the Bers isomorphism $φ: F(S) \rightarrow T(\dot{S})$, where $F(S)$ is the Bers fiber space of $S$, $T(X)$ is the Teichmüller space of $X$ and $U$ is the upper half-plane. The purpose of this paper is to show the map $φ\circ r:T(S)\times U \rightarrow T(\dot{S})$. has a continuous extension to some subset of the boundary $T(S) \times \partial U$.

Unification of extremal length geometry on Teichmuller space via intersection number

In this paper, we give a framework for the study of the extremal length geometry of Teichmüller space after S. Kerckhoff, F. Gardiner and H. Masur. There is a natural compactification using extremal length geometry introduced by Gardiner and Masur. The compactification is realized in a certain projective space. We develop the extremal length geometry in the cone which is defined as the inverse image of the compactification via the quotient mapping. The compactification is identified with a subset of the cone by taking an appropriate lift. The cone contains canonically the space of measured foliations in the boundary. We first extend the geometric intersection number on the space of measured foliations to the cone, and observe that the restriction of the intersection number to Teichmüller space is represented explicitly by the formula in terms of the Gromov product with respect to the Teichmüller distance. From this observation, we deduce that the Gromov product extends continuously to the compactification. As an application, we obtain an alternative approach to Earle-Ivanov-Kra-Markovic-Royden's characterization of isometries. Namely, with some few exceptions, the isometry group of Teichmüller space with respect to the Teichmüller distance is canonically isomorphic to the extended mapping class group. We also obtain a new realization of Teichmüller space, a hyperboloid model of Teichmüller space with respect to the Teichmüller distance.

Gardiner-Masur boundary of Teichmuller space : Vanishing subsurfaces and Uniquely ergodic boundary points

In this paper, we investigate the structure of the Gardiner-Masur boundary of Teichmuller space. Indeed, we will give a geometric description of boundary comparing to the Duchin-Leininger-Rafi compactification of the space of singular flat structures. We will obtain the coincidence between the Gardiner-Masur boundary and the Thurston boundary at the projective classes of uniquely ergodic measured foliations. We also study the action of the mapping class group on the Gardiner-Masur boundary and characterize the elements by fixed points. This paper has been withdrawn by the author. This paper will be renewal and the author will publish extended results elsewhere. If someone wants to see this preprint, please ask and consult the author.
