Criteria for energy conditions

In model building studies, it is important to check the energy conditions for the corresponding energy-momentum tensor determined by the gravitational field equations in order to single out physically reasonable models. In this process, one often encounters a situation where the energy-momentum tensor has one off-diagonal "space-time" component in the frame with an orthonormal basis in a given spacetime. We derive useful criteria of energy-momentum tensors for their Hawking-Ellis types and the standard energy conditions in such situations. As demonstrations, we apply those criteria to four different systems.

Simple traversable wormholes violating energy conditions only near the Planck scale

We present a static and axisymmetric traversable wormhole spacetime with vanishing Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) mass which is characterized by a length parameter $l$ and a deformation parameter $a$ and reduces to the massless Kerr vacuum wormhole as $l\to 0$. The spacetime is analytic everywhere and regularizes a ring-like conical singularity of the massless Kerr wormhole by virtue of a localized exotic matter which violates the standard energy conditions only near the wormhole throat. In the spherically symmetric case ($a=0$), the areal radius of the wormhole throat is exactly $l$ and all the standard energy conditions are respected outside the proper radial distance approximately $1.60l$ from the throat. While the curvature at the throat is beyond the Planck scale if $l$ is identical to the Planck length $l_{\rm p}$, our wormhole may be a semi-classical model for $l\simeq 10l_{\rm p}$. With $l=10l_{\rm p}$, the total amount of the negative energy supporting this wormhole is only $E\simeq -26.5m_{\rm p}c^2$, which is the rest mass energy of about $-5.77\times 10^{-4}{\rm g}$. It is shown that the geodesic behavior on the equatorial plane does not qualitatively change by the localization of an exotic matter.

Thakurta metric does not describe a cosmological black hole

Recently, the Thakurta metric has been adopted as a model of primordial black holes. We show that the spacetime described by this metric has neither black-hole event horizon nor black-hole trapping horizon and involves the violation of all the standard energy conditions as a solution of the Einstein equation. Therefore, this metric does not describe a cosmological black hole in the early universe. It is pointed out that a contradictory claim by the other group stems from an incorrect choice of sign.

Junction conditions in scalar-tensor theories

We analyze junction conditions at a null or non-null hypersurface $Σ$ in a large class of scalar-tensor theories in arbitrary $n(\ge 3)$ dimensions. After showing that the metric and a scalar field must be continuous at $Σ$ as the first junction conditions, we derive the second junctions conditions from the Einstein equations and the equation of motion for the scalar field. Subsequently, we study $C^1$ regular matching conditions as well as vacuum conditions at $Σ$ both in the Jordan and Einstein frames. Our result suggests that the following configurations may be possible; (i) a vacuum thin-shell at null $Σ$ in the Einstein frame, (ii) a vacuum thin-shell at null and non-null $Σ$ in the Jordan frame, and (iii) a non-vacuum $C^1$ regular matching at null $Σ$ in the Jordan frame. Lastly, we clarify the relations between the conditions for $C^1$ regularity and also for vacuum $Σ$ in the Jordan and Einstein frames.

Designer black holes from new 2D gravity

We present a family of extensions of spherically symmetric Einstein-Lanczos-Lovelock gravity. The field equations are second order and obey a generalized Birkhoff's theorem. The Hamiltonian constraint can be written in terms of a generalized Misner-Sharp mass function that determines the form of the vacuum solution. The action can be designed to yield interesting non-singular black-hole spacetimes as the unique vacuum solutions, including the Hayward black hole as well as a completely new one. The new theories therefore provide a consistent starting point for studying the formation and evaporation of non-singular black holes as a possible resolution to the black hole information loss conundrum.

Does the Gauss-Bonnet term stabilize wormholes?

The effect of the Gauss-Bonnet term on the existence and dynamical stability of thin-shell wormholes as negative tension branes is studied in the arbitrary dimensional spherically, planar, and hyperbolically symmetric spacetimes. We consider radial perturbations against the shell for the solutions which have the Z${}_2$ symmetry and admit the general relativistic limit. It is shown that the Gauss-Bonnet term shrinks the parameter region admitting static wormholes. The effect of the Gauss-Bonnet term on the stability depends on the spacetime symmetry. For planar symmetric wormholes, the Gauss-Bonnet term does not affect their stability. If the coupling constant is positive but small, the Gauss-Bonnet term tends to destabilize spherically symmetric wormholes, while it stabilizes hypebolically symmetric wormholes. The Gauss-Bonnet term can destabilize hypebolically symmetric wormholes as a non-perturbative effect, however, spherically symmetric wormholes cannot be stable.

Unitary evolution of the quantum universe with a Brown-Kuchar dust

We study the time evolution of a wave function for the spatially flat Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker universe governed by the Wheeler-DeWitt equation in both analytical and numerical methods. We consider a Brown-Kuchar dust as a matter field in order to introduce a "clock" in quantum cosmology and adopt the Laplace-Beltrami operator-ordering. The Hamiltonian operator admits an infinite number of self-adjoint extensions corresponding to a one-parameter family of boundary conditions at the origin in the minisuperspace. For any value of the extension parameter in the boundary condition, the evolution of a wave function is unitary and the classical initial singularity is avoided and replaced by the big bounce in the quantum system. Exact wave functions show that the expectation value of the spatial volume of the universe obeys the classical time evolution in the late time but its variance diverges.

Hamiltonian dynamics of Lovelock black holes with spherical symmetry

We consider spherically symmetric black holes in generic Lovelock gravity. Using geometrodynamical variables we do a complete Hamiltonian analysis, including derivation of the super-Hamiltonian and super-momentum constraints and verification of suitable boundary conditions for asymptotically flat black holes. Our analysis leads to a remarkably simple fully reduced Hamiltonian for the vacuum gravitational sector that provides the starting point for the quantization of Lovelock block holes. Finally, we derive the completely reduced equations of motion for the collapse of a spherically symmetric charged, self-gravitating complex scalar field in generalized flat slice (Painlevé-Gullstrand) coordinates.

Hedgehog ansatz and its generalization for self-gravitating Skyrmions

The hedgehog ansatz for spherically symmetric spacetimes in self-gravitating nonlinear sigma models and Skyrme models is revisited and its generalization for non-spherically symmetric spacetimes is proposed. The key idea behind our construction is that, even if the matter fields depend on the Killing coordinates in a nontrivial way, the corresponding energy-momentum tensor can still be compatible with spacetime symmetries. Our generalized hedgehog ansatz reduces the Skyrme equations to coupled differential equations for two scalar fields together with several constraint equations between them. Some particular field configurations satisfying those constraints are presented in several physically important spacetimes, including stationary and axisymmetric spacetimes. Incidentally, several new exact solutions are obtained under the standard hedgehog ansatz, one of which represents a global monopole inside a black hole with the Skyrme effect.

Creation of the universe with a stealth scalar field

The stealth scalar field is a non-trivial configuration without any back-reaction to geometry, which is characteristic for non-minimally coupled scalar fields. Studying the creation probability of the de Sitter universe with a stealth scalar field by the Hartle and Hawking's semi-classical method, we show that the effect of the stealth field can be significant. For the class of scalar fields we consider, creation with a stealth field is possible for a discrete value of the coupling constant and its creation probability is always less than that with a trivial scalar field. However, those creation rates can be almost the same depending on the parameters of the theory.

Exact dynamical AdS black holes and wormholes with a Klein-Gordon field

We present several classes of exact solutions in the Einstein-Klein-Gordon system with a cosmological constant. The spacetime has spherical, plane, or hyperbolic symmetry and the higher-dimensional solutions are obtained in a closed form only in the plane symmetric case. Among them, the class-I solution represents an asymptotically locally anti-de Sitter (AdS) dynamical black hole or wormhole. In four and higher dimensions, the generalized Misner-Sharp quasi-local mass blows up at AdS infinity, inferring that the spacetime is only locally AdS. In three dimensions, the scalar field becomes trivial and the solution reduces to the BTZ black hole.

Gauss-Bonnet braneworld redux: A novel scenario for the bouncing universe

We propose a new scenario for the bouncing universe in a simple five-dimensional braneworld model in the framework of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, which works even with ordinary matter on the brane. In this scenario, the so-called branch singularity located at a finite physical radius in the bulk spacetime plays an essential role. We show that a three-brane moving in the bulk may reach and pass through it in spite of the fact that it is a curvature singularity. The bulk spacetime is extended beyond the branch singularity in the C^0 sense and then the branch singularity is identified as a massive thin shell. From the bulk point of view, this process is the collision of the three-brane with the shell of branch singularity. From the point of view on the brane, this process is a sudden transition from the collapsing phase to the expanding phase of the universe. The present result opens a completely new possibility to achieve the bouncing brane universe as a higher-curvature effect.

Geometrodynamics of spherically symmetric Lovelock gravity

We derive the Hamiltonian for spherically symmetric Lovelock gravity using the geometrodynamics approach pioneered by Kuchař in the context of four-dimensional general relativity. When written in terms of the areal radius, the generalized Misner-Sharp mass and their conjugate momenta, the generic Lovelock action and Hamiltonian take on precisely the same simple forms as in general relativity. This result supports the interpretation of Lovelock gravity as the natural higher-dimensional extension of general relativity. It also provides an important first step towards the study of the quantum mechanics, Hamiltonian thermodynamics and formation of generic Lovelock black holes.

Lifshitz black holes in Brans-Dicke theory

We present an exact asymptotically Lifshitz black hole solution in Brans-Dicke theory of gravity in arbitrary $n(\ge 3)$ dimensions in presence of a power-law potential. In this solution, the dynamical exponent $z$ is determined in terms of the Brans-Dicke parameter $ω$ and $n$. Asymptotic Lifshitz condition at infinity requires $z>1$, which corresponds to $-(n-1)/(n-2) \le ω< -n/(n-1)$. On the other hand, the no-ghost condition for the scalar field in the Einstein frame requires $0<z \le 2(n-2)/(n-3)$. We compute the Hawking temperature of the black hole solution and discuss the problems encountered and the proposals in defining its thermodynamic properties. A generalized solution charged under the Maxwell field is also presented.

Lovelock black holes with maximally symmetric horizons

We investigate some properties of n(\ge 4)-dimensional spacetimes having symmetries corresponding to the isometries of an (n-2)-dimensional maximally symmetric space in Lovelock gravity under the null or dominant energy condition. The well-posedness of the generalized Misner-Sharp quasi-local mass proposed in the past study is shown. Using this quasi-local mass, we clarify the basic properties of the dynamical black holes defined by a future outer trapping horizon under certain assumptions on the Lovelock coupling constants. The C^2 vacuum solutions are classified into four types: (i) Schwarzschild-Tangherlini-type solution; (ii) Nariai-type solution; (iii) special degenerate vacuum solution; (iv) exceptional vacuum solution. The conditions for the realization of the last two solutions are clarified. The Schwarzschild-Tangherlini-type solution is studied in detail. We prove the first law of black-hole thermodynamics and present the expressions for the heat capacity and the free energy.

Can a primordial black hole or wormhole grow as fast as the universe?

This review addresses the issue of whether there are physically realistic self-similar solutions in which a primordial black hole is attached to an exact or asymptotically Friedmann model for an equation of state of the form $p=(γ-1)ρc^2$. In the positive pressure case ($1 < γ< 2$), there is no such solution when the black hole is attached to an exact Friedmann background via a sonic point. However, it has been claimed that there is a one-parameter family of asymptotically Friedmann black hole solutions providing the ratio of the black hole size to the cosmological horizon size is in a narrow range above some critical value. There are also "universal" black holes in which the black hole has an apparent horizon but no event horizon. It turns out that both these types of solution are only asymptotically {\it quasi}-Friedmann, because they contain a solid angle deficit at large distances, but they are not necessarily excluded observationally. We also consider the possibility of self-similar black hole solutions in a universe dominated by a scalar field. If the field is massless, the situation resembles the stiff fluid case, so any black hole solution is again contrived, although there may still be universal black hole solutions. The situation is less clear if the scalar field is rolling down a potential and therefore massive, as in the quintessence scenario. Although no explicit asymptotically Friedmann black hole solutions of this kind are known, they are not excluded and comparison with the $0 < γ< 2/3$ perfect fluid case suggests that they should exist if the black hole is not too large. This implies that a black hole might grow as fast as the cosmological horizon in a quintessence-dominated universe in some circumstances, supporting the proposal that accretion onto primordial black holes may have played a role in the production of the supermassive black holes in galactic nuclei.

Gauss-Bonnet black holes with non-constant curvature horizons

We investigate static and dynamical n(\ge 6)-dimensional black holes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity of which horizons have the isometries of an (n-2)-dimensional Einstein space with a condition on its Weyl tensor originally given by Dotti and Gleiser. Defining a generalized Misner-Sharp quasi-local mass that satisfies the unified first law, we show that most of the properties of the quasi-local mass and the trapping horizon are shared with the case with horizons of constant curvature. It is shown that the Dotti-Gleiser solution is the unique vacuum solution if the warp factor on the (n-2)-dimensional Einstein space is non-constant. The quasi-local mass becomes constant for the Dotti-Gleiser black hole and satisfies the first law of the black-hole thermodynamics with its Wald entropy. In the non-negative curvature case with positive Gauss-Bonnet constant and zero cosmological constant, it is shown that the Dotti-Gleiser black hole is thermodynamically unstable. Even if it becomes locally stable for the non-zero cosmological constant, it cannot be globally stable for the positive cosmological constant.

Magnetic black holes with higher-order curvature and gauge corrections in even dimensions

We obtain magnetic black-hole solutions in arbitrary $n(\ge 4)$ even dimensions for an action given by the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-Maxwell-$Λ$ pieces with the $F^4$ gauge-correction terms. This action arises in the low energy limit of heterotic string theory with constant dilaton and vanishing higher form fields. The spacetime is assumed to be a warped product ${\ma M}^{2} \times {\ma K}^{n-2}$, where ${\ma K}^{n-2}$ is a $(n-2)$-dimensional Einstein space satisfying a condition on its Weyl tensor, originally considered by Dotti and Gleiser. Under a few reasonable assumptions, we establish the generalized Jebsen-Birkhoff theorem for the magnetic solution in the case where the orbit of the warp factor on ${\ma K}^{n-2}$ is non-null. We prove that such magnetic solutions do not exist in odd dimensions. In contrast, in even dimensions, we obtain an explicit solution in the case where ${\ma K}^{n-2}$ is a product manifold of $(n-2)/2$ two-dimensional maximally symmetric spaces with the same constant warp factors. In this latter case, we show that the global structure of the spacetime sharply depends on the existence of the gauge-correction terms as well as the number of spacetime dimensions.

New Charged Black Holes with Conformal Scalar Hair

A new class of four-dimensional, hairy, stationary solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell-Lambda system with a conformally coupled scalar field is constructed in this paper. The metric belongs to the Plebanski-Demianski family and hence its static limit has the form of the charged C-metric. It is shown that, in the static case, a new family of hairy black holes arises. They turn out to be cohomogeneity-two, with horizons that are neither Einstein nor homogenous manifolds. The conical singularities in the C-metric can be removed due to the back reaction of the scalar field providing a new kind of regular, radiative spacetime. The scalar field carries a continuous parameter proportional to the usual acceleration present in the C-metric. In the zero-acceleration limit, the static solution reduces to the dyonic Bocharova-Bronnikov-Melnikov-Bekenstein solution or the dyonic extension of the Martinez-Troncoso-Zanelli black holes, depending on the value of the cosmological constant.

Braneworld dynamics in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity

We discuss the cosmological evolution of a braneworld in five dimensional Gauss-Bonnet gravity. Our discussion allows the fifth (bulk) dimension to be space-like as well as time-like. The resulting equations of motion have the form of a cubic equation in the (H^2,(ρ+σ)^2) plane, where σis the brane tension and ρis the matter density. This allows us to conduct a comprehensive pictorial analysis of cosmological evolution for the Gauss-Bonnet brane. The many interesting properties of this braneworld include the possibility of accelerated expansion at late times. For a finite region in parameter space the accelerated expansion can be phantom-like so that w < -1. At late times, this branch approaches de Sitter space (w = -1) and avoids the big-rip singularities usually present in phantom models. For a time-like extra dimension the Gauss-Bonnet brane can bounce and avoid the initial singularity.

Simple analytic model of wormhole formation

An explicit and simple solution representing the wormhole formation is presented. The spacetime is constructed by gluing the Minkowski and Roberts spacetimes at null hypersurfaces in a regular manner. The parameters in the Roberts solution are required to give the negative kinetic term for the massless scalar field. Although a curvature singularity appears at the moment of the wormhole formation, it disappears instantaneously. This instantaneous singularity is weak in the senses of both Tipler and Królak along radial causal geodesics.

Universal slow fall-off to the unique AdS infinity in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity

In this paper, the following two propositions are proven under the dominant energy condition for the matter field in the higher-dimensional spherically symmetric spacetime in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity in the presence of a cosmological constant $Λ$. First, for $Λ\le 0$ and $α\ge 0$ without a fine-tuning to give a unique anti-de Sitter vacuum, where $α$ is the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant, vanishing generalized Misner-Sharp mass is equivalent to the maximally symmetric spacetime. Under the fine-tuning, it is equivalent to the vacuum class I spacetime. Second, under the fine-tuning with $α>0$, the asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetime in the higher-dimensional Henneaux-Teitelboim sense is only a special class of the vacuum class I spacetime. The latter means the universal slow fall-off to the unique anti-de Sitter infinity in the presence of physically reasonable matter.

Spacetime structure of static solutions in Gauss-Bonnet gravity: charged case

We have studied spacetime structures of static solutions in the $n$-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-Maxwell-$Λ$ system. Especially we focus on effects of the Maxwell charge. We assume that the Gauss-Bonnet coefficient $α$ is non-negative and $4{\tilde α}/\ell^2\leq 1$ in order to define the relevant vacuum state. Solutions have the $(n-2)$-dimensional Euclidean sub-manifold whose curvature is $k=1,~0$, or -1. In Gauss-Bonnet gravity, solutions are classified into plus and minus branches. In the plus branch all solutions have the same asymptotic structure as those in general relativity with a negative cosmological constant. The charge affects a central region of the spacetime. A branch singularity appears at the finite radius $r=r_b>0$ for any mass parameter. There the Kretschmann invariant behaves as $O((r-r_b)^{-3})$, which is much milder than divergent behavior of the central singularity in general relativity $O(r^{-4(n-2)})$. Some charged black hole solutions have no inner horizon in Gauss-Bonnet gravity. Although there is a maximum mass for black hole solutions in the plus branch for $k=-1$ in the neutral case, no such maximum exists in the charged case. The solutions in the plus branch with $k=-1$ and $n\geq6$ have an "inner" black hole, and inner and the "outer" black hole horizons. Considering the evolution of black holes, we briefly discuss a classical discontinuous transition from one black hole spacetime to another.

Uniqueness of Self-Similar Asymptotically Friedmann-Robertson-Walker Spacetime in Brans-Dicke theory

We investigate spherically symmetric self-similar solutions in Brans-Dicke theory. Assuming a perfect fluid with the equation of state $p=(γ-1)μ(1 \le γ<2)$, we show that there are no non-trivial solutions which approach asymptotically to the flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spacetime if the energy density is positive. This result suggests that primordial black holes in Brans-Dicke theory cannot grow at the same rate as the size of the cosmological particle horizon.
