A complex analytic approach to orbifold Chern classes on singular varieties and its applications

In this article, we prove the orbifold version of the Bogomolov-Gieseker inequality for stable $\mathbb Q$-sheaves on Kähler varieties, generalizing our earlier work \cite{GP25} in dimension three. We also provide a characterization of the equality case, a new purely analytical proof of the numerical characterization of complex torus quotients as well as a novel, complex analytic interpretation of the second orbifold Chern class associated to a $\mathbb Q$-sheaf.

Kähler spaces with zero first Chern class: Bochner principle, Albanese map and fundamental groups

Let $X$ be a compact Kähler space with klt singularities and vanishing first Chern class. We prove the Bochner principle for holomorphic tensors on the smooth locus of $X$: any such tensor is parallel with respect to the singular Ricci-flat metrics. As a consequence, after a finite quasi-étale cover $X$ splits off a complex torus of the maximum possible dimension. We then proceed to decompose the tangent sheaf of $X$ according to its holonomy representation. In particular, we classify those $X$ which have strongly stable tangent sheaf: up to quasi-étale covers, these are either irreducible Calabi--Yau or irreducible holomorphic symplectic. As an application of these results, we show that if $X$ has dimension four, then it satisfies Campana's Abelianity Conjecture.

Numerical characterization of complex torus quotients

This article gives a characterization of quotients of complex tori by finite groups acting freely in codimension two in terms of a numerical vanishing condition on the first and second Chern class. This generalizes results previously obtained by Greb--Kebekus--Peternell in the projective setting, and by Kirschner and the second author in dimension three. As a key ingredient to the proof, we obtain a version of the Bogomolov--Gieseker inequality for stable sheaves on singular spaces, including a discussion of the case of equality.

On subvarieties of singular quotients of bounded domains

Let $X$ be a quotient of a bounded domain in $\mathbb C^n$. Under suitable assumptions, we prove that every subvariety of $X$ not included in the branch locus of the quotient map is of log general type in some orbifold sense. This generalizes a recent result by Boucksom and Diverio, which treated the case of compact, étale quotients. Finally, in the case where $X$ is compact, we give a sufficient condition under which there exists a proper analytic subset of $X$ containing all entire curves and all subvarieties not of general type (meant this time in in the usual sense as opposed to the orbifold sense).

Curvature formula for direct images of twisted relative canonical bundles endowed with a singular metric

In this note, we obtain various formulas for the curvature of the $L^2$ metric on the direct image of the relative canonical bundle twisted by a holomorphic line bundle endowed with a positively curved metric with analytic singularities, generalizing some of Berndtsson's seminal results in the smooth case. When the twist is assumed to be relatively big, we further provide a very explicit lower bound for the curvature of the $L^2$ metric.

A decomposition theorem for $\mathbb Q$-Fano Kähler-Einstein varieties

Let $X$ be a $\mathbb Q$-Fano variety admitting a Kähler-Einstein metric. We prove that up to a finite quasi-étale cover, $X$ splits isometrically as a product of Kähler-Einstein $\mathbb Q$-Fano varieties whose tangent sheaf is stable with respect to the anticanonical polarization. This relies among other things on a very general splitting theorem for algebraically integrable foliations. We also prove that the canonical extension of $T_X$ by $\mathscr O_X$ is semistable with respect to the anticanonical polarization.

Klt varieties with trivial canonical class -- Holonomy, differential forms, and fundamental groups

We investigate the holonomy group of singular Kähler-Einstein metrics on klt varieties with numerically trivial canonical divisor. Finiteness of the number of connected components, a Bochner principle for holomorphic tensors, and a connection between irreducibility of holonomy representations and stability of the tangent sheaf are established. As a consequence, known decompositions for tangent sheaves of varieties with trivial canonical divisor are refined. In particular, we show that up to finite quasi-étale covers, varieties with strongly stable tangent sheaf are either Calabi-Yau or irreducible holomorphic symplectic. These results form one building block for Höring-Peternell's recent proof of a singular version of the Beauville-Bogomolov Decomposition Theorem.

Variation of singular Kähler-Einstein metrics: Kodaira dimension zero

We study several questions involving relative Ricci-flat Kähler metrics for families of log Calabi-Yau manifolds. Our main result states that if $p:(X,B)\to Y$ is a Kähler fiber space such that $\displaystyle (X_y, B|_{X_y})$ is generically klt, $K_{X/Y}+B$ is relatively trivial and $p_*(m(K_{X/Y}+B))$ is Hermitian flat for some suitable integer $m$, then $p$ is locally trivial. Motivated by questions in birational geometry, we investigate the regularity of the relative singular Ricci-flat Kähler metric corresponding to a family $p:(X,B)\to Y$ of klt pairs $(X_y,B_y)$ such that $κ(K_{X_y}+B_y)=0$. Finally, we disprove a folkore conjecture by exhibiting a one-dimensional family of elliptic curves whose relative (Ricci-) flat metric is not semipositive.

Conic singularities metrics with prescribed Ricci curvature: the case of general cone angles along normal crossing divisors

Let $X$ be a non-singular compact Kähler manifold, endowed with an effective divisor $D= \sum (1-β_k) Y_k$ having simple normal crossing support, and satisfying $β_k \in (0,1)$. The natural objects one has to consider in order to explore the differential-geometric properties of the pair $(X, D)$ are the so-called metrics with conic singularities. In this article, we complete our earlier work \cite{CGP} concerning the Monge-Ampère equations on $(X, D)$ by establishing Laplacian and ${\mathscr C}^{2,α, β}$ estimates for the solution of this equations regardless to the size of the coefficients $0<β_k< 1$. In particular, we obtain a general theorem concerning the existence and regularity of Kähler-Einstein metrics with conic singularities along a normal crossing divisor.

Families of conic Kähler-Einstein metrics

Let $p:X\to Y$ be an holomorphic surjective map between compact Kähler manifolds and let $D$ be an effective divisor on $X$ with generically simple normal crossings support and coefficients in $(0,1)$. Provided that the adjoint canonical bundle $K_{X_y}+D_y$ of the generic fiber is ample, we show that the current obtained by glueing the fiberwise conic Kähler-Einstein metrics on the regular locus of the fibration is positive. Moreover, we prove that this current is bounded outside the divisor and that it extends to a positive current on $X$.

Kähler-Einstein metrics on stable varieties and log canonical pairs

Let $X$ be a canonically polarized variety, i.e. a complex projective variety such that its canonical class $K_{X}$ defines an ample $\Q-$line bundle, and satisfying the conditions $G_1$ and $S_2$. Our main result says that $X$ admits a Kähler-Einstein metric iff $X$ has semi-log canonical singularities i.e. iff $X$ is a stable variety in the sense of Kollár-Shepherd-Barron and Alexeev (whose moduli spaces are known to be compact). By definition a Kähler-Einstein metric in this singular context simply means a Kähler-Einstein on the regular locus of $X$ with volume equal to the algebraic volume of $K_{X},$ i.e. the top intersection number of $K_{X}.$ We also show that such a metric is uniquely determined and extends to define a canonical positive current in $c_{1}(K_{X}).$ Combined with recent results of Odaka our main result shows that $X$ admits a Kähler-Einstein metric iff $X$ is K-stable, which thus confirms the Yau-Tian-Donaldson conjecture in this general setting of (possibly singular) canonically polarized varieties. More generally, our results are shown to hold in the setting of log minimal varieties and they also generalize some prior results concerning Kähler-Einstein metrics on quasi-projective varieties.

Kähler-Einstein metrics: from cones to cusps

In this note, we prove that on a compact Kähler manifold $X$ carrying a smooth divisor $D$ such that $K_X+D$ is ample, the Kähler-Einstein cusp metric is the limit (in a strong sense) of the Kähler-Einstein conic metrics when the cone angle goes to $0$. We further investigate the boundary behavior of those and prove that the rescaled metrics converge to a cylindrical metric on $\mathbb C^*\times \mathbb C^{n-1}$.

preprint2015arXiv

Semi-stability of the tangent sheaf of singular varieties

The main goal of this paper is to prove the polystability of the logarithmic tangent sheaf $\mathscr T_X(-D)$ of a log canonical pair $(X,D)$ whose canonical bundle $K_X+D$ is ample, generalizing in a significant way a theorem of Enoki. We apply this result and the techniques involved in its proof to get a version of this theorem for stable varieties (the higher dimensional analogue of Deligne-Mumford's stable curves) and to prove the polystability with respect to any polarization of the tangent sheaf of a singular Calabi-Yau variety.

On the boundary behavior of Kähler-Einstein metrics on log canonical pairs

In this paper, we study the boundary behavior of the negatively curved Kähler-Einstein metric attached to a log canonical pair $(X,D)$ such that $K_X+D$ is ample. In the case where $X$ is smooth and $D$ has simple normal crossings support (but possibly negative coefficients), we provide a very precise estimate on the potential of the KE metric near the boundary $D$. In the more general singular case ($D$ being assumed effective though), we show that the KE metric has mixed cone and cusp singularities near $D$ on the snc locus of the pair. As a corollary, we derive the behavior in codimension one of the KE metric of a stable variety.

Metrics with cone singularities along normal crossing divisors and holomorphic tensor fields

We prove the existence of non-positively curved Kähler-Einstein metrics with cone singularities along a given simple normal crossing divisor on a compact Kähler manifold, under a technical condition on the cone angles, and we also discuss the case of positively-curved Kähler-Einstein metrics with cone singularities. As an application we extend to this setting classical results of Lichnerowicz and Kobayashi on the parallelism and vanishing of appropriate holomorphic tensor fields.

Kähler-Einstein metrics with mixed Poincaré and cone singularities along a normal crossing divisor

Let X be a Kähler manifold and D be a R-divisor with simple normal crossing support and coefficients between 1/2 and 1. Assuming that K_X+D is ample, we prove the existence and uniqueness of a negatively curved Kahler-Einstein metric on X\D having mixed Poincaré and cone singularities according to the coefficients of D. As an application we prove a vanishing theorem for certain holomorphic tensor fields attached to the pair (X,D).

Toric plurisubharmonic functions and analytic adjoint ideal sheaves

In the first part of this paper, we study the properties of some particular plurisubharmonic functions, namely the toric ones. The main result of this part is a precise description of their multiplier ideal sheaves, which generalizes the algebraic case studied by Howald. In the second part, almost entirely independent of the first one, we generalize the notion of the adjoint ideal sheaf used in algebraic geometry to the analytic setting. This enables us to give an analogue of Howald's theorem for adjoint ideals attached to monomial ideals. Finally, using the local Ohsawa-Takegoshi-Manivel theorem, we prove the existence of the so-called generalized adjunction exact sequence, which enables us to recover a weak version of the global extension theorem of Manivel, for compact Kähler manifolds.
