A note on the third way consistent deformation of Yang-Mills theory

Three-dimensional Yang-Mills theory allows for a deformation quadratic in the field strengths which can not be integrated to a local action without auxiliary fields. Yet, its covariant divergence consistently vanishes after iterating the equation, realizing a spin-1 analogue of `minimal massive gravity', which has been dubbed `third way consistent'. In this note, we show that after dualization of the three-dimensional gauge fields, the model possesses a natural action as a Chern-Simons coupled gauged sigma model. In this dual formulation, coupling to matter and to gravity becomes straightforward. As a direct application, we derive the coupling of the model to N=1 supergravity.

Supersymmetric action for 6D $(4,0)$ supergravity

We give a linearized but otherwise complete supersymmetric action for ${\cal N}=(4,0)$ supergravity in six dimensions, using a Kaluza-Klein-type $5+1$ split of coordinates and fields. We provide in particular a significantly simplified version of the bosonic action derived by us recently. This formulation employs fields that are no longer irreducible, subject to a local Lorentz invariance, which in turn simplifies the supersymmetry transformations including the exotic gravitino.

Triality and the consistent reductions on ${\rm AdS}_3\times S^3$

We study compactifications on ${\rm AdS}_3\times S^3$ and deformations thereof. We exploit the triality symmetry of the underlying duality group ${\rm SO}(4,4)$ of three-dimensional supergravity in order to construct and relate new consistent truncations. For non-chiral $D=6$, ${\cal N}_{\rm 6d}=(1,1)$ supergravity, we find two different consistent truncations to three-dimensional supergravity, retaining different subsets of Kaluza-Klein modes, thereby offering access to different subsectors of the full nonlinear dynamics. As an application, we construct a two-parameter family of ${\rm AdS}_3\times M^3$ backgrounds on squashed spheres preserving ${\rm U}(1)^2$ isometries. For generic value of the parameters, these solutions break all supersymmetries, yet they remain perturbatively stable within a non-vanishing region in parameter space. They also contain a one-parameter family of ${\cal N}=(0,4)$ supersymmetric ${\rm AdS}_3\times M^3$ backgrounds on squashed spheres with ${\rm U}(2)$ isometries. Using techniques from exceptional field theory, we determine the full Kaluza-Klein spectrum around these backgrounds.

Stable non-supersymmetric Anti-de Sitter vacua of massive IIA supergravity

Stable non-supersymmetric Anti-de Sitter (AdS) vacua of string theory are widely believed not to exist. In this letter, we analytically compute the full bosonic Kaluza-Klein spectrum around the ${\rm G_2}$-invariant non-supersymmetric $\textrm{AdS}_4$ solution of massive IIA supergravity, and show that it is perturbatively stable. We also provide evidence that six other non-supersymmetric $\textrm{AdS}_4$ solutions of massive IIA supergravity are perturbatively stable. Since previous studies have indicated that these AdS vacua may also be non-perturbatively stable, our findings pose a challenge to the Swampland Conjecture.

Duality Invariance and Higher Derivatives

We dimensionally reduce the spacetime action of bosonic string theory, and that of the bosonic sector of heterotic string theory after truncating the Yang-Mills gauge fields, on a $d$-dimensional torus including all higher-derivative corrections to first order in $α'$. A systematic procedure is developed that brings this action into a minimal form in which all fields except the metric carry only first order derivatives. This action is shown to be invariant under ${\rm O}(d,d,\mathbb{R})$ transformations that acquire $α'$-corrections through a Green-Schwarz type mechanism. We prove that, up to a global pre-factor, the first order $α'$-corrections are uniquely determined by ${\rm O}(d,d,\mathbb{R})$ invariance.

Green-Schwarz Mechanism for String Dualities

We determine the complete spacetime action to first order in $α'$ for the massless fields of bosonic string theory compactified on a $d$-dimensional torus. A fully systematic procedure is developed that brings the action into a minimal form in which all fields apart from the metric enter only with first-order derivatives. T-duality implies that this action must have a global $\mathrm{O}(d,d,\mathbb{R})$ symmetry, and we show that this requires a Green-Schwarz type mechanism for $α'$-deformed $\mathrm{O}(d,d,\mathbb{R})$ transformations. In terms of a frame formalism with ${\rm GL}(d)\times {\rm GL}(d)$ gauge symmetry this amounts to a modification of the three-form curvature by a Chern-Simons term for composite gauge fields.

Kaluza-Klein Spectrometry for Supergravity

Exceptional field theories yield duality covariant formulations of supergravity. We show that they provide a highly efficient tool to compute the Kaluza-Klein mass spectra associated to compactifications around various background geometries relevant for string theory and holographic applications. This includes geometries with little to no remaining symmetries, hardly accessible to standard methods. As an illustration, we work out the masses of some higher Kaluza-Klein multiplets around warped geometries corresponding to some prominent ${\cal N} = 2$ supersymmetric AdS vacua in maximal supergravity.

Tachyonic Kaluza-Klein modes and the AdS swampland conjecture

We compute the Kaluza-Klein spectrum of the non-supersymmetric SO(3)$\,\times\,$SO(3)-invariant AdS$_4$ vacuum of 11-dimensional supergravity, whose lowest-lying Kaluza-Klein modes belong to a consistent truncation to 4-dimensional ${\cal N}=8$ supergravity and are stable. We show that, nonetheless, the higher Kaluza-Klein modes become tachyonic so that this non-supersymmetric AdS$_4$ vacuum is perturbatively unstable within 11-dimensional supergravity. This represents the first example of unstable higher Kaluza-Klein modes and provides further evidence for the AdS swampland conjecture, which states that there are no stable non-supersymmetric AdS vacua within string theory. We also find 27 infinitesimal moduli amongst the Kaluza-Klein modes, which hints at the existence of a family of non-supersymmetric AdS$_4$ vacua.

Toward Exotic 6D Supergravities

We investigate exotic supergravity theories in 6D with maximal (4,0) and (3,1) supersymmetry, which were conjectured by C. Hull to exist and to describe strong coupling limits of ${\cal N}=8$ theories in 5D. These theories involve exotic gauge fields with non-standard Young tableaux representations, subject to (self-)duality constraints. We give novel actions in a 5+1 split of coordinates whose field equations reproduce those of the free bosonic (4,0) and (3,1) theory, respectively, including the (self-)duality relations. Evidence is presented for a master exceptional field theory formulation with an extended section constraint that, depending on the solution, produces the (4,0), (3,1) or the conventional (2,2) theory. We comment on the possible construction of a fully non-linear master exceptional field theory.

E$_{8(8)}$ Exceptional Field Theory: Geometry, Fermions and Supersymmetry

We present the supersymmetric extension of the recently constructed E$_{8(8)}$ exceptional field theory -- the manifestly U-duality covariant formulation of the untruncated ten- and eleven-dimensional supergravities. This theory is formulated on a (3+248) dimensional spacetime (modulo section constraint) in which the extended coordinates transform in the adjoint representation of E$_{8(8)}$. All bosonic fields are E$_{8(8)}$ tensors and transform under internal generalized diffeomorphisms. The fermions are tensors under the generalized Lorentz group SO(1,2)$\times$SO(16), where SO(16) is the maximal compact subgroup of E$_{8(8)}$. Vanishing generalized torsion determines the corresponding spin connections to the extent they are required to formulate the field equations and supersymmetry transformation laws. We determine the supersymmetry transformations for all bosonic and fermionic fields such that they consistently close into generalized diffeomorphisms. In particular, the covariantly constrained gauge vectors of E$_{8(8)}$ exceptional field theory combine with the standard supergravity fields into a single supermultiplet. We give the complete extended Lagrangian and show its invariance under supersymmetry. Upon solution of the section constraint the theory reduces to full D=11 or type IIB supergravity.

The N>2 supersymmetric AdS vacua in maximal supergravity

We perform a systematic search for anti-de Sitter vacua of maximal supergravity with N>2 residual supersymmetries. We find that maximal supergravity admits two 1-parameter classes of N=3 and N=4 vacua, respectively. They are embedded, for the different values of an angular parameter, in the $ω$-rotated SO(8) (N=3) and SO(1,7) (N=4 and 3) gauged models. All vacua disappear in the limit when $ω$ tends to zero. We determine the mass spectra and the AdS-supermultiplet structure. These appear to be the first and only N>2 supersymmetric AdS vacua in maximal supergravity, aside from the N=8 vacua of the SO(8)-gauged models. We also prove on general grounds that no such vacua can exist for 4<N<8.

All timelike supersymmetric solutions of three-dimensional half-maximal supergravity

We first classify all supersymmetric solutions of the 3-dimensional half-maximal ungauged supergravity that possess a timelike Killing vector coming from the Killing spinor bilinear by considering their identification under the complexification of the local symmetry of the theory. It is found that only solutions that preserve $16/2^n, 1 \leq n \leq 3$ real supersymmetries are allowed. We then classify supersymmetric solutions under the real local symmetry of the theory and we are able to solve the equations of motion for all of them. It is shown that all such solutions can be expressed as a direct sum of solutions of the integrable Liouville and SU(3) Toda systems. This completes the construction of all supersymmetric solutions of the model since the null case has already been solved.

Consistent Kaluza-Klein Truncations via Exceptional Field Theory

We present the generalized Scherk-Schwarz reduction ansatz for the full supersymmetric exceptional field theory in terms of group valued twist matrices subject to consistency equations. With this ansatz the field equations precisely reduce to those of lower-dimensional gauged supergravity parametrized by an embedding tensor. We explicitly construct a family of twist matrices as solutions of the consistency equations. They induce gauged supergravities with gauge groups SO(p,q) and CSO(p,q,r). Geometrically, they describe compactifications on internal spaces given by spheres and (warped) hyperboloides $H^{p,q}$, thus extending the applicability of generalized Scherk-Schwarz reductions beyond homogeneous spaces. Together with the dictionary that relates exceptional field theory to D=11 and IIB supergravity, respectively, the construction defines an entire new family of consistent truncations of the original theories. These include not only compactifications on spheres of different dimensions (such as AdS$_5\times S^5$), but also various hyperboloid compactifications giving rise to a higher-dimensional embedding of supergravities with non-compact and non-semisimple gauge groups.

Consistent Type IIB Reductions to Maximal 5D Supergravity

We use exceptional field theory as a tool to work out the full non-linear reduction ansaetze for the AdS$_5\times S^5$ compactification of IIB supergravity and its non-compact counterparts in which the sphere $S^5$ is replaced by the inhomogeneous hyperboloidal space $H^{p,q}$. The resulting theories are the maximal 5D supergravities with gauge groups SO(p,q). They are consistent truncations in the sense that every solution of 5D supergravity lifts to a solution of IIB supergravity. In particular, every stationary point and every holographic RG flow of the scalar potentials for the compact and non-compact 5D gaugings directly lift to solutions of IIB supergravity.

Dualising consistent IIA / IIB truncations

We use exceptional field theory to establish a duality between certain consistent 7-dimensional truncations with maximal SUSY from IIA to IIB. We use this technique to obtain new consistent truncations of IIB on $S^3$ and $H^{p,q}$ and work out the explicit reduction formulas in the internal sector. We also present uplifts for other gaugings of 7-d maximal SUGRA, including theories with a trombone gauging. Some of the latter can only be obtained by a non-geometric compactification.

E$_{6(6)}$ Exceptional Field Theory: Review and Embedding of Type IIB

We review E$_{6(6)}$ exceptional field theory with a particular emphasis on the embedding of type IIB supergravity, which is obtained by picking the GL$(5)\times {\rm SL}(2)$ invariant solution of the section constraint. We work out the precise decomposition of the E$_{6(6)}$ covariant fields on the one hand and the Kaluza-Klein-like decomposition of type IIB supergravity on the other. Matching the symmetries, this allows us to establish the precise dictionary between both sets of fields. Finally, we establish on-shell equivalence. In particular, we show how the self-duality constraint for the four-form potential in type IIB is reconstructed from the duality relations in the off-shell formulation of the E$_{6(6)}$ exceptional field theory.

Exceptional Field Theory I: $E_{6(6)}$ covariant Form of M-Theory and Type IIB

We present the details of the recently constructed $E_{6(6)}$ covariant extension of 11-dimensional supergravity. This theory requires a 5+27 dimensional spacetime in which the `internal' coordinates transform in the $\bar{\bf 27}$ of $E_{6(6)}$. All fields are $E_{6(6)}$ tensors and transform under (gauged) internal generalized diffeomorphisms. The `Kaluza-Klein' vector field acts as a gauge field for the $E_{6(6)}$ covariant `E-bracket' rather than a Lie bracket, requiring the presence of two-forms akin to the tensor hierarchy of gauged supergravity. We construct the complete and unique action that is gauge invariant under generalized diffeomorphisms in the internal and external coordinates. The theory is subject to covariant section constraints on the derivatives, implying that only a subset of the extra 27 coordinates is physical. We give two solutions of the section constraints: the first preserves GL(6) and embeds the action of the complete (i.e. untruncated) 11-dimensional supergravity; the second preserves GL(5) x SL(2) and embeds complete type IIB supergravity. As a by-product, we thus obtain an off-shell action for type IIB supergravity.

Hidden Q-structure and Lie 3-algebra for non-abelian superconformal models in six dimensions

We disclose the mathematical structure underlying the gauge field sector of the recently constructed non-abelian superconformal models in six spacetime dimensions. This is a coupled system of 1-form, 2-form, and 3-form gauge fields. We show that the algebraic consistency constraints governing this system permit to define a Lie 3-algebra, generalizing the structural Lie algebra of a standard Yang-Mills theory to the setting of a higher bundle. Reformulating the Lie 3-algebra in terms of a nilpotent degree 1 BRST-type operator Q, this higher bundle can be compactly described by means of a Q-bundle; its fiber is the shifted tangent of the Q-manifold corresponding to the Lie 3-algebra and its base the odd tangent bundle of spacetime equipped with the de Rham differential. The generalized Bianchi identities can then be retrieved concisely from Q^2=0, which encode all the essence of the structural identities. Gauge transformations are identified as vertical inner automorphisms of such a bundle, their algebra being determined from a Q-derived bracket.

Exceptional Field Theory II: E$_{7(7)}$

We introduce exceptional field theory for the group E_{7(7)}, based on a (4+56)-dimensional spacetime subject to a covariant section condition. The `internal' generalized diffeomorphisms of the coordinates in the fundamental representation of E_{7(7)} are governed by a covariant `E-bracket', which is gauged by 56 vector fields. We construct the complete and unique set of field equations that is gauge invariant under generalized diffeomorphisms in the internal and external coordinates. Among them feature the non-abelian twisted self-duality equations for the 56 gauge vectors. We discuss the explicit solutions of the section condition describing the embedding of the full, untruncated 11-dimensional and type IIB supergravity, respectively. As a new feature compared to the previously constructed E_{6(6)} formulation, some components among the 56 gauge vectors descend from the 11-dimensional dual graviton but nevertheless allow for a consistent coupling by virtue of a covariantly constrained compensating 2-form gauge field.

Exceptional Field Theory III: E$_{8(8)}$

We develop exceptional field theory for E$_{8(8)}$, defined on a (3+248)-dimensional generalized spacetime with extended coordinates in the adjoint representation of E$_{8(8)}$. The fields transform under E$_{8(8)}$ generalized diffeomorphisms and are subject to covariant section constraints. The bosonic fields include an `internal' dreibein and an E$_{8(8)}$-valued `zweihundertachtundvierzigbein' (248-bein). Crucially, the theory also features gauge vectors for the E$_{8(8)}$ E-bracket governing the generalized diffeomorphism algebra and covariantly constrained gauge vectors for a separate but constrained E$_{8(8)}$ gauge symmetry. The complete bosonic theory, with a novel Chern-Simons term for the gauge vectors, is uniquely determined by gauge invariance under internal and external generalized diffeomorphisms. The theory consistently comprises components of the dual graviton encoded in the 248-bein. Upon picking particular solutions of the constraints the theory reduces to D=11 or type IIB supergravity, for which the dual graviton becomes pure gauge. This resolves the dual graviton problem, as we discuss in detail.

Fermions and Supersymmetry in $\rm E_{6(6)}$ Exceptional Field Theory

We construct the supersymmetric completion of E$_{6(6)}$-covariant exceptional field theory. The theory is based on a $(5+27)$-dimensional generalized space-time subject to a covariant section constraint. The fermions are tensors under the local Lorentz group ${\rm SO}(1,4)\times {\rm USp}(8)$ and transform as weighted scalars under the E$_{6(6)}$ (internal) generalized diffeomorphisms. We present the complete Lagrangian and prove its invariance under supersymmetry. Upon explicit solution of the section constraint the theory embeds full $D=11$ supergravity and IIB supergravity, respectively.

Supersymmetric E$_{7(7)}$ Exceptional Field Theory

We give the supersymmetric extension of exceptional field theory for E$_{7(7)}$, which is based on a $(4+56)$-dimensional generalized spacetime subject to a covariant constraint. The fermions are tensors under the local Lorentz group ${\rm SO}(1,3)\times {\rm SU}(8)$ and transform as scalar densities under the E$_{7(7)}$ (internal) generalized diffeomorphisms. The supersymmetry transformations are manifestly covariant under these symmetries and close, in particular, into the generalized diffeomorphisms of the 56-dimensional space. We give the fermionic field equations and prove supersymmetric invariance. We establish the consistency of these results with the recently constructed generalized geometric formulation of $D=11$ supergravity.

Duality-symmetric actions for non-Abelian tensor fields

We construct the duality-symmetric actions for a large class of six-dimensional models describing hierarchies of non-Abelian scalar, vector and tensor fields related to each other by first-order (self-)duality equations that follow from these actions. In particular, this construction provides a Lorentz invariant action for non-Abelian self-dual tensor fields. The class of models includes the bosonic sectors of the 6d (1,0) superconformal models of interacting non-Abelian self-dual tensor, vector, and hypermultiplets.

Exceptional Form of D=11 Supergravity

Eleven-dimensional supergravity reveals large exceptional symmetries upon reduction, in accordance with the U-duality groups of M-theory, but their higher-dimensional geometric origin has remained a mystery. In this letter, we show that D=11 supergravity can be extended to be fully covariant under the exceptional groups E_{n(n)}, n=6,7,8. Motivated by a similar formulation of double field theory we introduce an extended `exceptional spacetime'. We illustrate the construction by giving the explicit E_{6(6)} covariant form: the full D=11 supergravity, in a 5+6 splitting of coordinates but without truncation, embeds into an E_{6(6)} covariant 5+27 dimensional theory. We argue that this covariant form likewise comprises type IIB supergravity.

Gauge theory of Kaluza-Klein and winding modes

We perform a Kaluza-Klein inspired rewriting of double field theory by splitting the coordinates into `compact' and `non-compact' directions. There is no truncation of the compact coordinates or their duals, and so this formulation is manifestly O(d,d) invariant, with d the number of compact directions. The action can serve as starting point for arbitrary Kaluza-Klein ansaetze. For a torus background the theory describes the full tower of Kaluza-Klein modes or, in the dual frame, of the winding modes. The Kaluza-Klein vector is a gauge field for the duality-covariantized Courant bracket algebra rather than a Lie algebra. Gauge covariance requires the inclusion of the 2-form gauge potential descending from the Kalb-Ramond field, leading to a structure resembling the tensor hierarchy of gauged supergravity.

Rotating D0-branes and consistent truncations of supergravity

The fluctuations around the D0-brane near-horizon geometry are described by two-dimensional SO(9) gauged maximal supergravity. We work out the U(1)^4 truncation of this theory whose scalar sector consists of five dilaton and four axion fields. We construct the full non-linear Kaluza-Klein ansatz for the embedding of the dilaton sector into type IIA supergravity. This yields a consistent truncation around a geometry which is the warped product of a two-dimensional domain wall and the sphere S^8. As an application, we consider the solutions corresponding to rotating D0-branes which in the near-horizon limit approach AdS2xM8 geometries, and discuss their thermodynamical properties. More generally, we study the appearance of such solutions in the presence of non-vanishing axion fields.

U-duality covariant gravity

We extend the techniques of double field theory to more general gravity theories and U-duality symmetries, having in mind applications to the complete D=11 supergravity. In this paper we work out a (3+3)-dimensional `U-duality covariantization' of D=4 Einstein gravity, in which the Ehlers group SL(2,R) is realized geometrically, acting in the 3 representation on half of the coordinates. We include the full (2+1)-dimensional metric, while the `internal vielbein' is a coset representative of SL(2,R)/SO(2) and transforms under gauge transformations via generalized Lie derivatives. In addition, we introduce a gauge connection of the `C-bracket', and a gauge connection of SL(2,R), albeit subject to constraints. The action takes the form of (2+1)-dimensional gravity coupled to a Chern-Simons-matter theory but encodes the complete D=4 Einstein gravity. We comment on generalizations, such as an `$E_{8(8)}$ covariantization' of M-theory.

Rigid 6D supersymmetry and localization

We construct rigid supersymmetric theories for interacting vector and tensor multiplets on six-dimensional Riemannian spin manifolds. Analyzing the Killing spinor equations, we derive the constraints on these theories. To this end, we reformulate the conditions for supersymmetry as a set of necessary and sufficient conditions on the geometry. The formalism is illustrated with a number of examples, including manifolds that are hermitian, strong Kaehler with torsion. As an application, we show that the path integral of pure super Yang-Mills theory defined on a Calabi-Yau threefold M_6 localizes on stable holomorphic bundles over M_6.

We consider rigid supersymmetric theories in four-dimensional Riemannian spin manifolds. We build the Lagrangian directly in Euclidean signature from the outset, keeping track of potential boundary terms. We reformulate the conditions for supersymmetry as a set of conditions on the torsion classes of a suitable SU(2) or trivial G-structure. We illustrate the formalism with a number of examples including supersymmetric backgrounds with non-vanishing Weyl tensor.

Six-dimensional superconformal couplings of non-abelian tensor and hypermultiplets

We construct six-dimensional superconformal models with non-abelian tensor and hypermultiplets. They describe the field content of (2,0) theories, coupled to (1,0) vector multiplets. The latter are part of the non-abelian gauge structure that also includes non-dynamical three- and four-forms. The hypermultiplets are described by gauged nonlinear sigma models with a hyper-Kaehler cone target space. We also address the question of constraints in these models and show that their resolution requires the inclusion of abelian factors. These provide couplings that were previously considered for anomaly cancellations with abelian tensor multiplets and resulted in the selection of ADE gauge groups.

SO(9) supergravity in two dimensions

We present maximal supergravity in two dimensions with gauge group SO(9). The construction is based on selecting the proper embedding of the gauge group into the infinite-dimensional symmetry group of the ungauged theory. The bosonic part of the Lagrangian is given by a (dilaton-)gravity coupled non-linear gauged sigma-model with Wess-Zumino term. We give explicit expressions for the fermionic sector, the Yukawa couplings and the scalar potential which supports a half-supersymmetric domain wall solution. The theory is expected to describe the low-energy effective action upon reduction on the D0-brane near-horizon warped AdS_2 x S^8 geometry, dual to the supersymmetric (BFSS) matrix quantum mechanics.

(1,0) superconformal models in six dimensions

We construct six-dimensional (1,0) superconformal models with non-abelian gauge couplings for multiple tensor multiplets. A crucial ingredient in the construction is the introduction of three-form gauge potentials which communicate degrees of freedom between the tensor multiplets and the Yang-Mills multiplet, but do not introduce additional degrees of freedom. Generically these models provide only equations of motions. For a subclass also a Lagrangian formulation exists, however it appears to exhibit indefinite metrics in the kinetic sector. We discuss several examples and analyze the excitation spectra in their supersymmetric vacua. In general, the models are perturbatively defined only in the spontaneously broken phase with the vev of the tensor multiplet scalars serving as the inverse coupling constants of the Yang-Mills multiplet. We briefly discuss the inclusion of hypermultiplets which complete the field content to that of superconformal (2,0) theories.

3D gauged supergravity from wrapped M5-branes with AdS/CMT applications

By identifying a bosonic consistent truncation from the 1/4-BPS wrapped M5-brane geometry of Maldacena, Strominger and Witten in D = 11 supergravity and finding a supersymmetric extension, we recover an N = 2 D = 3 supergravity theory. Reductions of a large class of supersymmetric solutions corresponding to wrapped M2 and M5-branes lead to black strings and warped AdS3 solutions preserving supersymmetry. With a view to AdS/CMT applications, we also construct a numerical hairy BTZ black hole and, as a preliminary step in this direction, determine the conductivity of the dual CFT.

Actions for Non-Abelian Twisted Self-Duality

The dynamics of abelian vector and antisymmetric tensor gauge fields can be described in terms of twisted self-duality equations. These first-order equations relate the p-form fields to their dual forms by demanding that their respective field strengths are dual to each other. It is well known that such equations can be integrated to a local action that carries on equal footing the p-forms together with their duals and is manifestly duality invariant. Space-time covariance is no longer manifest but still present with a non-standard realization of space-time diffeomorphisms on the gauge fields. In this paper, we give a non-abelian generalization of this first-order action by gauging part of its global symmetries. The resulting field equations are non-abelian versions of the twisted self-duality equations. A key element in the construction is the introduction of proper couplings to higher-rank tensor fields. We discuss possible applications (to Yang-Mills and supergravity theories) and comment on the relation to previous no-go theorems.

N=8 Supergravity with Local Scaling Symmetry

We construct maximal supergravity in four dimensions with local scaling symmetry as deformation of the original Cremmer-Julia theory. The different theories which include the standard gaugings are parametrized by an embedding tensor carrying 56+912 parameters. We determine the form of the possible gauge groups and work out the complete set of field equations. As a result we obtain the most general couplings compatible with N=8 supersymmetry in four dimensions. A particular feature of these theories is the absence of an action and an additional positive contribution to the effective cosmological constant. Moreover, these gaugings are generically dyonic, i.e. involve simultaneously electric and magnetic vector fields.

A special road to AdS vacua

We apply the techniques of special Kaehler geometry to investigate AdS_4 vacua of general N=2 gauged supergravities underlying flux compactifications of type II theories. We formulate the scalar potential and its extremization conditions in terms of a triplet of prepotentials P_x and their special Kaehler covariant derivatives only, in a form that recalls the potential and the attractor equations of N=2 black holes. We propose a system of first order equations for the P_x which generalize the supersymmetry conditions and yield non-supersymmetric vacua. Special geometry allows us to recast these equations in algebraic form, and we find an infinite class of new N=0 and N=1 AdS_4 solutions, displaying a rich pattern of non-trivial charges associated with NSNS and RR fluxes. Finally, by explicit evaluation of the entropy function on the solutions, we derive a U-duality invariant expression for the cosmological constant and the central charges of the dual CFT's.

N=6 Superspace Constraints, SUSY Enhancement and Monopole Operators

We present a systematic analysis of the N=6 superspace constraints in three space-time dimensions. The general coupling between vector and scalar supermultiplets is encoded in an SU(4) tensor $W^i_j$ which is a function of the matter fields and subject to a set of algebraic and super-differential relations. We give a genuine N=6 classification for superconformal models with polynomial interactions and find the known ABJM and ABJ models. We further study the issue of supersymmetry enhancement to N=8 and the role of monopole operators in this scenario. To this end we assume the existence of a composite monopole operator superfield which we use to formulate the additional supersymmetries as internal symmetries of the N=6 superspace constraints. From the invariance conditions of these constraints we derive a system of superspace constraints for the proposed monopole operator superfield. This constraint system defines the composite monopole operator superfield analogously to the original N=6 superspace constraints defining the dynamics of the elementary fields.

N=8 Superspace Constraints for Three-dimensional Gauge Theories

We present a systematic analysis of the N=8 superspace constraints in three space-time dimensions. The general coupling between vector and scalar supermultiplets is encoded in an SO(8) tensor W_{AB} which is a function of the matter fields and subject to a set of algebraic and super-differential relations. We show how the conformal BLG model as well as three-dimensional super Yang-Mills theory provide solutions to these constraints and can both be formulated in this universal framework.

On The Supersymmetric Solutions of D=3 Half-maximal Supergravities

We initiate a systematic study of the solutions of three-dimensional matter-coupled half-maximal (N=8) supergravities which admit a Killing spinor. To this end we analyze in detail the invariant tensors built from spinor bilinears, a technique originally developed and applied in higher dimensions. This reveals an intriguing interplay with the scalar target space geometry SO(8,n)/(SO(8) x SO(n)). Another interesting feature of the three-dimensional case is the implementation of the duality between vector and scalar fields in this framework. For the ungauged theory with timelike Killing vector, we explicitly determine the scalar current and show that its integrability relation reduces to a covariant holomorphicity equation, for which we present a number of explicit solutions. For the case of a null Killing vector, we give the most general solution which is of pp-wave type.

Gukov, Martinec, Moore and Strominger found that the D1-D5-D5' system with the D5-D5' angle at 45 degrees admits a deformation "rho" preserving supersymmetry. Under this deformation, the D5-branes and D5'-branes reconnect along a single special Lagrangian manifold. We construct the near-horizon limit of this brane setup (for which no supergravity solution is currently known), imposing the requisite symmetries perturbatively in the deformation rho. Reducing to the three-dimensional effective gauged supergravity, we compute the scalar potential and verify the presence of a deformation with the expected properties. We compute the conformal dimensions as functions of rho. This spectrum naturally organizes into N=3 supermultiplets, corresponding to the 3/16 preserved by the brane system. We give some remarks on the symmetric orbifold CFT for Q_D5=Q_D5', outline the computation of rho-deformed correlators in this theory, and probe computations in our rho-deformed background.

The maximal D=5 supergravities

The general Lagrangian for maximal supergravity in five spacetime dimensions is presented with vector potentials in the \bar{27} and tensor fields in the 27 representation of E_6. This novel tensor-vector system is subject to an intricate set of gauge transformations, describing 3(27-t) massless helicity degrees of freedom for the vector fields and 3t massive spin degrees of freedom for the tensor fields, where the (even) value of t depends on the gauging. The kinetic term of the tensor fields is accompanied by a unique Chern-Simons coupling which involves both vector and tensor fields. The Lagrangians are completely encoded in terms of the embedding tensor which defines the E_6 subgroup that is gauged by the vectors. The embedding tensor is subject to two constraints which ensure the consistency of the combined vector-tensor gauge transformations and the supersymmetry of the full Lagrangian. This new formulation encompasses all possible gaugings.

Higher Spin Symmetry and N=4 SYM

We assemble the spectrum of single-trace operators in free N=4 SU(N) SYM theory into irreducible representations of the Higher Spin symmetry algebra hs(2,2|4). Higher Spin representations or YT-pletons are associated to Young tableaux (YT) corresponding to representations of the symmetric group compatible with the cyclicity of color traces. After turning on interactions, YT-pletons decompose into infinite towers of representations of the superconformal algebra PSU(2,2|4) and anomalous dimensions are generated. We work out the decompositions of tripletons with respect to the N=4 superconformal algebra PSU(2,2|4) and compute their one anomalous dimensions at large N. We then focus on operators/states sitting in semishort superconformal multiplets. By passing them through a semishort-sieve that removes superdescendants, we derive compact expressions for the partition function of semishort primaries.

Kaluza-Klein supergravity on AdS_3 x S^3

We construct a Chern-Simons type gauged N=8 supergravity in three spacetime dimensions with gauge group SO(4) x T_\infty over the infinite dimensional coset space SO(8,\infty)/(SO(8) x SO(\infty)), where T_\infty is an infinite dimensional translation subgroup of SO(8,\infty). This theory describes the effective interactions of the (infinitely many) supermultiplets contained in the two spin-1 Kaluza-Klein towers arising in the compactification of N=(2,0) supergravity in six dimensions on AdS_3 x S^3 with the massless supergravity multiplet. After the elimination of the gauge fields associated with T_\infty, one is left with a Yang Mills type gauged supergravity with gauge group SO(4), and in the vacuum the symmetry is broken to the (super-)isometry group of AdS_3 x S^3, with infinitely many fields acquiring masses by a variant of the Brout-Englert-Higgs effect.

Chern-Simons vs. Yang-Mills gaugings in three dimensions

Recently, gauged supergravities in three dimensions with Yang-Mills and Chern-Simons type interactions have been constructed. In this article, we demonstrate that any gauging of Yang-Mills type with semisimple gauge group G_0, possibly including extra couplings to massive Chern-Simons vectors, is equivalent on-shell to a pure Chern-Simons type gauging with non-semisimple gauge group $G_0 \ltimes T \subset G$, where T is a certain translation group, and where G is the maximal global symmetry group of the ungauged theory. We discuss several examples.

Gauged locally supersymmetric D=3 nonlinear sigma models

We construct supersymmetric deformations of general, locally supersymmetric, nonlinear sigma models in three spacetime dimensions, by extending the pure supergravity theory with a Chern-Simons term and gauging a subgroup of the sigma model isometries, possibly augmented with R-symmetry transformations. This class of models is shown to include theories with standard Yang-Mills Lagrangians, with optional moment interactions and topological mass terms. The results constitute a general classification of three-dimensional gauged supergravities.

On stringy AdS_5 x S^5 and higher spin holography

We derive the spectrum of Kaluza-Klein descendants of string excitations on AdS_5 x S^5. String states are organized in long multiplets of the AdS supergroup SU(2,2|4,R) with a rich pattern of shortenings at the higher spin enhancement point λ=0. The string states holographically dual to the higher spin currents of SYM theory in the strict zero coupling limit are identified together with the corresponding Goldstone particles responsible for the Higgsing of the higher spin symmetry at λ\neq 0. Exploiting higher spin symmetry we propose a very simple yet effective mass formula and establish a one-to-one correspondence between the complete spectrum of Δ_0 <= 4 string states and relevant/marginal single-trace deformations in N=4 SYM theory at large N. To this end, we describe how to efficiently enumerate scaling operators in `free' YM theory, with the inclusion of fermionic `letters', by resorting to Polya theory. Comparison between the spectra of 1/4-BPS states is also presented. Finally, we discuss how to organize the spectrum of N=4 SYM theory in SU(2,2|4,R) supermultiplets by means of some kind of `Eratostenes's sieve'.

AdS Duals of Matrix Strings

We review recent work on the holographic duals of type II and heterotic matrix string theories described by warped AdS_3 supergravities. In particular, we compute the spectra of Kaluza-Klein primaries for type I, II supergravities on warped AdS_3xS^7 and match them with the primary operators in the dual two-dimensional gauge theories. The presence of non-trivial warp factors and dilaton profiles requires a modification of the familiar dictionary between masses and ``scaling'' dimensions of fields and operators. We present these modifications for the general case of domain wall/QFT correspondences between supergravities on warped AdS_{d+1}xS^q geometries and super Yang-Mills theories with 16 supercharges.

Calabi-Yau Fourfolds with Flux and Supersymmetry Breaking

In Calabi-Yau fourfold compactifications of M-theory with flux, we investigate the possibility of partial supersymmetry breaking in the three-dimensional effective theory. To this end, we place the effective theory in the framework of general N=2 gauged supergravities, in the special case where only translational symmetries are gauged. This allows us to extract supersymmetry-breaking conditions, and interpret them as conditions on the 4-form flux and Calabi-Yau geometry. For N=2 unbroken supersymmetry in three dimensions we recover previously known results, and we find a new condition for breaking supersymmetry from N=2 to N=1, i.e. from four to two supercharges. An example of a Calabi-Yau hypersurface in a toric variety that satisfies this condition is provided.

On Lagrangians and Gaugings of Maximal Supergravities

A consistent gauging of maximal supergravity requires that the T-tensor transforms according to a specific representation of the duality group. The analysis of viable gaugings is thus amenable to group-theoretical analysis, which we explain and exploit for a large variety of gaugings. We discuss the subtleties in four spacetime dimensions, where the ungauged Lagrangians are not unique and encoded in an E_7(7)\Sp(56,R)/GL(28) matrix. Here we define the T-tensor and derive all relevant identities in full generality. We present a large number of examples in d=4,5 spacetime dimensions which include non-semisimple gaugings of the type arising in (multiple) Scherk-Schwarz reductions. We also present some general background material on the latter as well as some group-theoretical results which are necessary for using computer algebra.

Supergravity Duals of Matrix String Theory

We study the holographic duals of type II and heterotic matrix string theories described by warped AdS_3 supergravities. By explicitly solving the linearized equations of motion around near horizon D-string geometries, we determine the spectrum of Kaluza-Klein primaries for type I, II supergravities on warped AdS_3 x S^7. The results match those coming from the dual two-dimensional gauge theories living on the D-string worldvolumes. We briefly discuss the connections with the N=(8,8), N=(8,0) orbifold superconformal field theories to which type IIB / heterotic matrix strings flow in the infrared. In particular, we associate the dimension (3/2, 3/2) twisted operator which brings the matrix string theories out from the conformal point (R^8)^N / S_N with the dilaton profile in the supergravity background. The familiar dictionary between masses and scaling dimensions of fields and operators are modified by the presence of non-trivial warp factors and running dilatons. These modifications are worked out for the general case of domain wall / QFT correspondences between supergravities on warped AdS_{d+1} x S^q geometries and super Yang-Mills theories with 16 supercharges.
