Three-dimensional de Sitter holography and bulk correlators at late time

We propose an explicitly calculable example of holography on 3-dimensional de Sitter space by providing a prescription to analytic continue a higher-spin holography on 3-dimensional anti-de Sitter space. Applying the de Sitter holography, we explicitly compute bulk correlation functions on 3-dimensional de Sitter space at late time in a higher-spin gravity. These expressions are consistent with recent analysis based on bulk Feynman diagrams. Our explicit computations reveal how holographic computations could provide fruitful information.

Machine Learning Etudes in Conformal Field Theories

We demonstrate that various aspects of Conformal Field Theory are amenable to machine learning. Relatively modest feed-forward neural networks are able to distinguish between scale and conformal invariance of a three-point function and identify a crossing-symmetric four-point function to nearly a hundred percent accuracy. Furthermore, neural networks are also able to identify conformal blocks appearing in a putative CFT four-point function and predict the values of the corresponding OPE coefficients. Neural networks also successfully classify primary operators by their quantum numbers under discrete symmetries in the CFT from examining OPE data. We also demonstrate that neural networks are able to learn the available OPE data for scalar correlation function in the 3d Ising model and predict the twists of higher-spin operators that appear in scalar OPE channels by regression.

The gravity dual of Lorentzian OPE blocks

We consider the operator product expansion (OPE) structure of scalar primary operators in a generic Lorentzian CFT and its dual description in a gravitational theory with one extra dimension. The OPE can be decomposed into certain bi-local operators transforming as the irreducible representations under conformal group, called the OPE blocks. We show the OPE block is given by integrating a higher spin field along a geodesic in the Lorentzian AdS space-time when the two operators are space-like separated. When the two operators are time-like separated however, we find the OPE block has a peculiar representation where the dual gravitational theory is not defined on the AdS space-time but on a hyperboloid with an additional time coordinate and Minkowski space-time on its boundary. This differs from the surface Witten diagram proposal for the time-like OPE block, but in two dimensions we reproduce it consistently using a kinematical duality between a pair of time-like separated points and space-like ones.

On Conformal Block, Crossing Kernel and Multi-variable Hypergeometric Functions

In this note, we present an alternative representation of the conformal block with external scalars in general spacetime dimensions in terms of a finite summation over Appell fourth hypergeometric function ${\bf{F}}_4$. We also construct its generalization to the non-local primary exchange operator with continuous spin and its corresponding Mellin representation which are relevant for Lorentzian spacetime. Using these results we apply the Lorentzian inversion formula to compute so-called crossing kernel in general spacetime dimensions, the resultant expression can be written as a double infinite summation over certain Kampe de Feriet hypergeometric functions with the correct double trace operator singularity structures. We also include some complementary computations in AdS space, demonstrating the orthogonality of conformal blocks and performing the decompositions.

A Model of Quark and Lepton Mixing and Mass Hierarchy

It is shown that an idea proposed in 1996 that relates in a qualitatively correct way the inter-family mass hierarchies of the up quarks, down quarks, charged leptons, and neutrinos, can be combined with a predictive scheme recently proposed for relating quark mixing and neutrino mixing. In the resulting model, the entire flavor structure of the quarks and leptons is expressible in terms of two "master matrices": a diagonal matrix that gives the inter-family mass ratios, and an off-diagonal matrix that controls all flavor mixing.

A Single Source for All Flavor Violation

In a model proposed in 2012, all flavor mixing has a single source and is governed by a single "master matrix." This model was shown to give several predictions for quark and lepton masses and mixing angles and for mixing angles within SU(5) multiplets that are observable in proton decay. Here it is shown that the same master matrix controls the flavor-changing processes mediated by a singlet scalar that exists in the model, giving predictions for tau to mu + gamma, tau to e + gamma, and mu to e + gamma.

On Higgs Branch Localization of Seiberg-Witten Theories on Ellipsoid

In this note, we consider so-called "Higgs Branch Localization" for four dimensional N=2 field theories on 4d ellipsoid. We find a new set of saddle point equations arising from additional Higgs branch deformation term, whose solutions include both Higgs branch and BPS instanton-vortex mixed configurations. By evaluating the contour integral, we also demonstrate the ellipsoid partition almost factorizes into purely b and 1/b dependent parts, using SQCD as an explicit example. We identify various factorized parts with the ellipsoid partition function of two dimensional N=(2,2) SQCDA, which is precisely the vortex world volume theory. We also give physical interpretation for the non-factorizable parts and discuss future directions.

Heterotic Surface Defects and Dualities from 2d/4d Indices

Starting with the superconformal indices for 4d N=2 and N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories, which are related by superpotential deformation, we perform the contour integrations and isolate the residue contributions which can be attributed to the surface defects. These defects can be interpreted as the IR limit of dynamical vortices. Given the 2d N=(2,2) and N=(0,2) world sheet theories for these surface defects, we then verify this statement by explicitly computing their elliptic genera and identifying their fugacity parameters through superconformal algebras. We show them precisely match, and the results extend previous prescriptions for inserting surface defects into 4d supersymmetric partition functions to N=1 setting. We also study how 4d N=1 IR dualities descend into the N=(0,2) world sheet theories of their surface defects, and extend the N=(2,2) triality observed earlier to other N=(0,2) surface defects unrelated to dynamical vortices.

BPS States in Omega Background and Integrability

We reconsider string and domain wall central charges in N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories in four dimensions in presence of the Omega background in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili (NS) limit. Existence of these charges entails presence of the corresponding topological defects in the theory - vortices and domain walls. In spirit of the 4d/2d duality we discuss the worldsheet low energy effective theory living on the BPS vortex in N=2 Supersymmetric Quantum Chromodynamics (SQCD). We discuss some aspects of the brane realization of the dualities between various quantum integrable models. A chain of such dualities enables us to check the AGT correspondence in the NS limit.

Cogeneration of Dark Matter and Baryons by Non-Standard-Model Sphalerons in Unified Models

Sphalerons of a new gauge interaction can convert a primordial asymmetry in B or L into a dark matter asymmetry. From the equilibrium conditions for the sphalerons of both the electroweak and the new interactions, one can compute the ratios of B, L, and X, where X is the dark matter number, thus determining the mass of the dark matter particle fairly precisely. Such a scenario can arise naturally in the context of unification with larger groups. An illustrative model embeddable in $SU(6) \times SU(2) \subset E_6$ is described as well as an equally simple model based on SU(7).

Connecting Mirror Symmetry in 3d and 2d via Localization

We explicitly apply localization results to study the interpolation between three and two dimensional mirror symmetry for Abelian gauge theories with four supercharges. We first use the ellipsoid S_b^3 partition functions to verify the mirror symmetry between a pair of general three dimensional N=2 Abelian Chern-Simons quiver gauge theories. These expressions readily factorize into holomorphic blocks and their anti-holomorphic copies, so we can also obtain the partition functions on S^1 x S^2 via fusion procedure. We then demonstrate S^1 x S^2 partition functions for the three dimensional Abelian gauge theories can be dimensionally reduced to the S^2 partition functions of N=(2,2) GLSM and Landau-Ginzburg model for the corresponding two dimensional mirror pair, as anticipated previously in \cite{Aganagic:2001uw}. We also comment on the analogous interpolation for the non-Abelian gauge theories and compute the K-theory vortex partition function for a simple limit to verify the prediction from holomorphic block.

On Integrable Structure and Geometric Transition in Supersymmetric Gauge Theories

We generalize the exact field theoretic correspondence proposed in arXiv:1103.5726 and embed it into the context of refined topological string. The correspondence originally proposed from the common integrable structures in different field theories can be recast as a special limit of the refined geometric transition relating open and closed topological string partition functions. We realize the simplest examples of the correspondence explicitly in terms of open-closed geometric transition.

On the Integrability of Four Dimensional N=2 Gauge Theories in the Omega Background

We continue to investigate the relationship between the infrared physics of N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories in four dimensions and various integrable models such as Gaudin, Calogero-Moser and quantum spin chains. We prove interesting dualities among some of these integrable systems by performing different, albeit equivalent, quantizations of the Seiberg-Witten curve of the four dimensional theory. We also discuss conformal field theories related to N=2 4d gauge theories by the Alday-Gaiotto-Tachikawa (AGT) duality and the role of conformal blocks of those CFTs in the integrable systems. As a consequence, the equivalence of conformal blocks of rank two Toda and Novikov-Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZNW) theories on the torus with punctures is found.

Proton Decay and the Origin of Quark and Lepton Mixing

It was recently proposed that all flavor mixing has a single source, namely the mixing of the three quark and lepton families with "extra" vectorlike fermions in 5 + 5-bar multiplets of SU(5). This was shown to lead to several testable predictions including neutrino masses and CP-violating phases. Here it is shown that the mixing angles within grand unified fermion multiplets are also predicted. Proton decay branching ratios would thus give several independent tests of the model. Certain model parameters could be determined independently from the quark and lepton spectrum and from proton decay.

A 5d/3d duality from relativistic integrable system

We propose and prove a new exact duality between the F-terms of supersymmetric gauge theories in five and three dimensions with adjoint matter fields. The theories are compactified on a circle and are subject to the Omega deformation. In the limit proposed by Nekrasov and Shatashvili, the supersymmetric vacua become isolated and are identified with the eigenstates of a quantum integrable system. The effective twisted superpotentials are the Yang-Yang functional of the relativistic elliptic Calogero-Moser model. We show that they match on-shell by deriving the Bethe ansatz equation from the saddle point of the five-dimensional partition function. We also show that the Chern-Simons terms match and extend our proposal to the elliptic quiver generalizations.

A Simple Grand Unified Relation between Neutrino Mixing and Quark Mixing

It is proposed that all flavor mixing is caused by the mixing of the three quark and lepton families with vectorlike fermions in 5 + 5-bar multiplets of SU(5). This simple assumption implies that both V_{CKM} and U_{MNS} are generated by a single matrix. The entire 3-by-3 complex mass matrix of the neutrinos M_{nu} is then found to have a simple expression in terms of two complex parameters and an overall scale. Thus, all the presently unknown neutrino parameters are predicted. The best fits are for theta_{atm} less than or approximately 40 degrees. The leptonic Dirac CP phase is found to be somewhat greater than pi radians.

A New 2d/4d Duality via Integrability

We prove a duality, recently conjectured in arXiv:1103.5726, which relates the F-terms of supersymmetric gauge theories defined in two and four dimensions respectively. The proof proceeds by a saddle point analysis of the four-dimensional partition function in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit. At special quantized values of the Coulomb branch moduli, the saddle point condition becomes the Bethe Ansatz Equation of the SL(2) Heisenberg spin chain which coincides with the F-term equation of the dual two-dimensional theory. The on-shell values of the superpotential in the two theories are shown to coincide in corresponding vacua. We also identify two-dimensional duals for a large set of quiver gauge theories in four dimensions and generalize our proof to these cases.

Moduli Space and Wall-Crossing Formulae in Higher-Rank Gauge Theories

We study the interplay between wall-crossing in four-dimensional gauge theory and instanton contributions to the moduli space metric of the same theory on $\mathbb{R}^{3}\times S^{1}$. We consider $\mathcal{N}=2$ SUSY Yang--Mills with gauge group SU(n) and focus on walls of marginal stability which extend to weak coupling. By comparison with explicit field theory results we verify the Kontsevich--Soibelman formula for the change in the BPS spectrum at these walls and check the smoothness of the metric in the corresponding compactified theory. We also verify in detail the predictions for the one instanton contribution to the metric coming from the non-linear integral equations of Gaiotto, Moore and Nietzke.

Notes on Wall Crossing and Instanton in Compactified Gauge Theory with Matter

We study the quantum effects on the Coulomb branch of N=2 SU(2) supersymmetric Yang-Mills with fundamental matters compactified on R^3 x S^1, and extract the explicit perturbative and leading non-perturbative corrections to the moduli space metric predicted from the recent work of Gaiotto, Moore and Neitzke on wall-crossing [1]. We verify the predicted metric by computing the leading weak coupling instanton contribution to the four fermion correlation using standard field theory techniques, and demonstrate perfect agreement. We also demonstrate how previously known three dimensional quantities can be recovered in appropriate small radius limit, and provide a simple geometric picture from brane construction.

Towards multi-field D-brane inflation in a warped throat

We study the inflationary dynamics in a model of slow-roll inflation in warped throat. Inflation is realized by the motion of a D-brane along the radial direction of the throat, and at later stages instabilities develop in the angular directions. We closely investigate both the single field potential relevant for the slow-roll phase, and the full multi-field one including the angular modes which becomes important at later stages. We study the main features of the instability process, discussing its possible consequences and identifying the vacua towards which the angular modes are driven.

Wall Crossing and Instantons in Compactified Gauge Theory

We calculate the leading weak-coupling instanton contribution to the moduli-space metric of N=2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with gauge group SU(2) compactified on R^3 x S^1. The results are in precise agreement with the semiclassical expansion of the exact metric recently conjectured by Gaiotto, Moore and Neitzke based on considerations related to wall-crossing in the corresponding four-dimensional theory.

On D3-brane Dynamics at Strong Warping

We study the dynamics of a D3 brane in generic IIB warped compactifications, using the Hamiltonian formulation discussed in arXiv:0805.3700 [hep-th]. Taking into account of both closed and open string fluctuations, we derive the warped Kahler potential governing the motion of a probe D3 brane. By including the backreaction of D3, we also comment on how the problem of defining a holomorphic gauge coupling on wrapped D7 branes in warped background can be resolved.

On Supersymmetric D7-branes in the Warped Deformed Conifold

We study the supersymmetric properties of D7-branes in the warped deformed conifold. We consider the $κ$-symmetry conditions on D7-branes in this specific warped background, taking into account the background NS-NS 2-form flux. While any holomorphic embedding defines a supersymmetric D7-brane in the absence of background H-flux, most of the D7-brane embeddings considered in the literature do not preserve supersymmetry for the warped deformed conifold without also including brane worldvolume flux. For the simplest such embedding, we construct numerically the worldvolume fluxnecessary to restore supersymmetry. We also comment on the dual field theory descriptions in terms of cascading N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories with flavors. Finally, we discuss some possible applications of our results to moduli stabilization and vacuum energy uplifting, gauge/gravity duality, and string inflationary model building.

Towards a Holographic Model of Color-Flavor Locking Phase

We demonstrate a holographic realization of color-flavor locking phase, using N=4 SU(Nc) SYM coupled to N=2 Nf fundamental hypermultiplets as an example. The gravity dual consists of Nc D3-branes and Nf D7-branes with world volume gauge field representing the baryon density. Treating a small number \tilde{N}c << Nc of D3-branes as Yang-Mills instantons on the D7-branes, we consider possible potential(s) on their moduli space or equivalently the Higgs branch. We show that a non-trivial potential can be generated by including the backreaction of the baryonic density on the D7-branes, this dynamically drives the instantons (= D3-branes) into dissolution. We interpret this as a color-flavor locking since the size of the instanton is the squark vev, and study the symmetry breaking patterns. Extending to finite temperature setup, we demonstrate that color-flavor locking persists, and the thermal effect provides additional structures in the phase diagram.

Precision Test of AdS/CFT in Lunin-Maldacena Background

We obtain the solutions and explicitly calculate the energy for a class of two-spin semiclassical string states in the Lunin-Maldacena background. These configurations are β-deformed versions of the folded string solutions in AdS_{5}\times S^{5} background. They correspond to certain single trace operators in the \mathcal{N}=1 superconformal βdeformation of \mathcal{N}=4 Yang-Mills. We calculate the one loop anomalous dimension for the dual single trace operator from the associated twisted spin chain with a general two-cut distribution of Bethe roots. Our results show a striking match between the two calculations. We demonstrate the natural identification of parameters on the two sides of the analysis, and explain the significance of the Virasoro constraint associated with the winding motion of semiclassical strings from the perspective of the spin chain solution.

The Asymptotic Spectrum of the N=4 Super Yang-Mills Spin Chain

In this paper we discuss the asymptotic spectrum of the spin chain description of planar N=4 SUSY Yang-Mills. The states appearing in the spectrum belong to irreducible representations of the unbroken supersymmetry SU(2|2) x SU(2|2) with non-trivial extra central extensions. The elementary magnon corresponds to the bifundamental representation while boundstates of Q magnons form a certain short representation of dimension 16Q^{2}. Generalising the Beisert's analysis of the Q=1 case, we derive the exact dispersion relation for these states by purely group theoretic means.

The Shape of Instantons : Cross-Section of Supertubes and Dyonic Instantons

We explore the correspondence between Yang-Mills instantons and algebraic curves. The curve is defined by Higgs zero locus of dyonic instantons in 1+4 dimensional Yang-Mills-Higgs theory, and it is identified in string theory with the cross-section of supertubes connecting parallel D4-branes. To present evidence for the identification, we show that with total charges fixed, the supertube angular momentum computed from the Higgs zero locus is maximized when the locus is circular, which has been proven for the cross-section of the supertubes. This leads to a consistent dictionary between the charges in two pictures. We also consider a T-dual version of the story, identifying the profiles of the wavy instanton strings with those of the supercurves/D-helices. Based on this observation, we then argue a novel correspondence between ADHM data of instantons and algebraic curves defining the locus. The degree of the curve is related to the instanton number, and splitting property of the curve is physically manifested by well-separated instantons.
