Well-posedness of state-dependent rank-based interacting systems

We study the existence and uniqueness of rank-based interacting systems of stochastic differential equations. These systems can be seen as modifications with state-dependent coefficients of the Atlas model in mathematical finance. The coefficients of the underlying SDEs are possibly discontinuous. We first establish strong well-posedness for a planar system with rank-dependent drift coefficients, and non-rank-dependent and non-uniformly elliptic diffusion coefficients. We then state weak well-posedness for two classes of high-dimensional rank-based interacting SDEs with elliptic diffusion coefficients. Finally, we address the positivity of solutions in the case where the diffusion coefficients vanish at zero.

Measure estimation on a manifold explored by a diffusion process

From the observation of a diffusion path $(X_t)_{t\in [0,T]}$ on a compact connected $d$-dimensional manifold $\mathcal{M}$ without boundary, we consider the problem of estimating the stationary measure $μ$ of the process. Wang and Zhu (2023) showed that for the Wasserstein metric $\mathcal{W}_2$ and for $d\geq 5$, the convergence rate of $T^{-1/(d-2)}$ is attained by the occupation measure of the path $(X_t)_{t\in [0,T]}$ when $(X_t)_{t\in [0,T]}$ is a Langevin diffusion. We extend their result in several directions. First, we show that the rate of convergence holds for a large class of diffusion paths, whose generators are uniformly elliptic. Second, the regularity of the density $p$ of the stationary measure $μ$ with respect to the volume measure of $\mathcal{M}$ can be leveraged to obtain faster estimators: when $p$ belongs to a Sobolev space of order $\ell\geq 2$, smoothing the occupation measure by convolution with a kernel yields an estimator whose rate of convergence is of order $T^{-(\ell+1)/(2\ell+d-2)}$. We further show that this rate is the minimax rate of estimation for this problem.

Long time behavior of telegraph processes under convex potentials

We study the long-time behavior of variants of the telegraph process with position-dependent jump-rates, which result in a monotone gradient-like drift toward the origin. We compute their invariant laws and obtain, via probabilistic couplings arguments, some quantitative estimates of the total variation distance to equilibrium. Our techniques extend ideas previously developed for a simplified piecewise deterministic Markov model of bacterial chemotaxis.

On the distribution of cumulative Parisian ruin

We introduce the concept of cumulative Parisian ruin, which is based on the time spent in the red by the underlying surplus process. Our main result is an explicit representation for the distribution of the occupation time, over a finite-time horizon, for a compound Poisson process with drift and exponential claims. The Brownian ruin model is also studied in details. Finally, we analyze for a general framework the relationships between cumulative Parisian ruin and classical ruin, as well as with Parisian ruin based on exponential implementation delays.

Joint distribution of a spectrally negative Lévy process and its occupation time, with step option pricing in view

For a spectrally negative Lévy process $X$, we study the following distribution: $$ \mathbb{E}_x \left[ \mathrm{e}^{- q \int_0^t \mathbf{1}_{(a,b)} (X_s) \mathrm{d}s } ; X_t \in \mathrm{d}y \right], $$ where $-\infty \leq a < b < \infty$, and where $q,t>0$ and $x \in \mathbb{R}$. More precisely, we identify the Laplace transform with respect to $t$ of this measure in terms of the scale functions of the underlying process. Our results are then used to price step options and the particular case of an exponential spectrally negative Lévy jump-diffusion model is discussed.

On the Depletion Problem for an Insurance Risk Process: New Non-ruin Quantities in Collective Risk Theory

The field of risk theory has traditionally focused on ruin-related quantities. In particular, the socalled Expected Discounted Penalty Function has been the object of a thorough study over the years. Although interesting in their own right, ruin related quantities do not seem to capture path-dependent properties of the reserve. In this article we aim at presenting the probabilistic properties of drawdowns and the speed at which an insurance reserve depletes as a consequence of the risk exposure of the company. These new quantities are not ruin related yet they capture important features of an insurance position and we believe it can lead to the design of a meaningful risk measures. Studying drawdowns and speed of depletion for Lévy insurance risk processes represent a novel and challenging concept in insurance mathematics. In this paper, all these concepts are formally introduced in an insurance setting. Moreover, using recent results in fluctuation theory for Lévy processes, we derive expressions for the distribution of several quantities related to the depletion problem. Of particular interest are the distribution of drawdowns and the Laplace transform for the speed of depletion. These expressions are given for some examples of Lévy insurance risk processes for which they can be calculated, in particular for the classical Cramer-Lundberg model.

Quantitative estimates for the long time behavior of an ergodic variant of the telegraph process

Motivated by stability questions on piecewise deterministic Markov models of bacterial chemotaxis, we study the long time behavior of a variant of the classic telegraph process having a non-constant jump rate that induces a drift towards the origin. We compute its invariant law and show exponential ergodicity, obtaining a quantitative control of the total variation distance to equilibrium at each instant of time. These results rely on an exact description of the excursions of the process away from the origin and on the explicit construction of an original coalescent coupling for both velocity and position. Sharpness of the obtained convergence rate is discussed.

Estimates for the density of a nonlinear Landau process

The aim of this paper is to obtain estimates for the density of the law of a specific nonlinear diffusion process at any positive bounded time. This process is issued from kinetic theory and is called Landau process, by analogy with the associated deterministic Fokker-Planck-Landau equation. It is not Markovian, its coefficients are not bounded and the diffusion matrix is degenerate. Nevertheless, the specific form of the diffusion matrix and the nonlinearity imply the non-degeneracy of the Malliavin matrix and then the existence and smoothness of the density. In order to obtain a lower bound for the density, the known results do not apply. However, our approach follows the main idea consisting in discretizing the interval time and developing a recursive method. To this aim, we prove and use refined results on conditional Malliavin calculus. The lower bound implies the positivity of the solution of the Landau equation, and partially answers to an analytical conjecture. We also obtain an upper bound for the density, which again leads to an unusual estimate due to the bad behavior of the coefficients.
