Euclidean traveller in hyperbolic worlds

We will discuss all possible closures of a Euclidean line in various geometric spaces. Imagine the Euclidean traveller, who travels only along a Euclidean line. She will be travelling to many different geometric worlds, and our question will be "what places does she get to see in each world?". Here is the itinerary of our Euclidean traveller: In 1884, she travels to the torus of any dimension, guided by Kronecker. In 1936, she travels to the world, called a closed hyperbolic surface, guided by Hedlund. In 1991, she then travels to a closed hyperbolic manifold of higher dimension $n\ge 3$ guided by Ratner. Finally, she adventures into hyperbolic manifolds of infinite volume guided by Dal'bo in dimension $2$ in 2000, by McMullen-Mohammadi-Oh in dimension $3$ in 2016 and by Lee-Oh in all higher dimensions in 2019.

Uniqueness of conformal measures and local mixing for Anosov groups

In the late seventies, Sullivan showed that for a convex cocompact subgroup $Γ$ of $\operatorname{SO}^\circ(n,1)$ with critical exponent $δ>0$, any $Γ$-conformal measure on $\partial \mathbb{H}^n$ of dimension $δ$ is necessarily supported on the limit set $Λ$ and that the conformal measure of dimension $δ$ exists uniquely. We prove an analogue of this theorem for any Zariski dense Anosov subgroup of a connected semisimple real algebraic group $G$ of rank at most $3$. We also obtain the local mixing for generalized BMS measures on $Γ\backslash G$ including Haar measures.

Shrinking targets for the geodesic flow on geometrically finite hyperbolic manifolds

Let $\mathcal{M}$ be a geometrically finite hyperbolic manifold. We present a very general theorem on the shrinking target problem for the geodesic flow, using its exponential mixing. This includes a strengthening of Sullivan's logarithm law for the excursion rate of the geodesic flow. More generally, we prove logarithm laws for the first hitting time for shrinking cusp neighborhoods, shrinking tubular neighborhoods of a closed geodesic, and shrinking metric balls, as well as give quantitative estimates for the time a generic geodesic spends in such shrinking targets.

Spectral gap and exponential mixing on geometrically finite hyperbolic manifolds

Let $\mathcal{M}=Γ\backslash\mathbb{H}^{d+1}$ be a geometrically finite hyperbolic manifold with critical exponent exceeding $d/2$. We obtain a precise asymptotic expansion of the matrix coefficients for the geodesic flow in $L^2(\mathrm{T}^1(\mathcal{M}))$, with exponential error term essentially as good as the one given by the spectral gap for the Laplace operator on $L^2(\mathcal{M})$ due to Lax and Phillips. Combined with the work of Bourgain, Gamburd, and Sarnak and its generalization by Golsefidy and Varju on expanders, this implies uniform exponential mixing for congruence covers of $\mathcal{M}$ when $Γ$ is a Zariski dense subgroup contained in an arithmetic subgroup of $\mathrm{SO}^{\circ}(d+1,1)$.

Classification of joinings for Kleinian groups

We classify all locally finite joinings of a horospherical subgroup action on Γ\ G when Γis a Zariski dense geometrically finite subgroup of G=PSL_2(R) or PSL_2(C). This generalizes Ratner's 1983 joining theorem for the case when Γis a lattice in G. One of the main ingredients is equidistribution of non-closed horospherical orbits with respect to the Burger-Roblin measure which we prove in a greater generality where G is the connected component of the identity in SO(n,1) for n at least 2 and Γis any Zariski dense geometrically finite subgroup of G.

Expanding maps and continued fractions

We obtain a power saving in the error term for a semigroup congruence lattice point count related to continued fractions. This is done by adapting arguments from recent work of Oh and Winter (2014) that give uniform bounds for certain transfer operators in the congruence aspect. Our arguments also build crucially on work of Naud (2005) and Bourgain, Gamburd and Sarnak (2011). The result we obtain, together with a certain conjecture about the multiplicative combinatorics of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbf{Z})$ that we highlight in the sequel, can be used to obtain an improvement on the size of the exceptional set in Bourgain and Kontorovich's work (2014) on Zaremba's conjecture.

Invariant Radon measures for Unipotent flows and products of Kleinian groups

Let G=PSL(2, F) where F= R or C, and consider the space Z=(Γ_1 x Γ_2)\ (G x G) where Γ_1<G is a co-compact lattice and Γ_2<G is a finitely generated discrete Zariski dense subgroup. The work of Benoist-Quint gives a classification of all ergodic invariant Radon measures on Z for the diagonal G-action. In this paper, for a horospherical subgroup N of G, we classify all ergodic, conservative, invariant Radon measures on Z for the diagonal N-action, under the additional assumption that Γ_2 is geometrically finite.

Uniform exponential mixing and resonance free regions for convex cocompact congruence subgroups of $\operatorname{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$

Let $Γ<\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$ be a non-elementary finitely generated subgroup and let $Γ(q)$ be its congruence subgroup of level $q$ for each $q\in \mathbb{N}$. We obtain an asymptotic formula for the matrix coefficients of $L^2(Γ(q) \backslash \mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{R}))$ with a {\it uniform} exponential error term for all square-free $q$ with no small prime divisors. As an application we establish a uniform resonance-free half plane for the resolvent of the Laplacian on $Γ(q) \backslash \mathbb{H}^2$ over $q$ as above. Our approach is to extend Dolgopyat's dynamical proof of exponential mixing of the geodesic flow uniformly over congruence covers, by establishing uniform spectral bounds for congruence transfer operators associated to the geodesic flow. One of the key ingredients is the expander theory due to Bourgain-Gamburd-Sarnak.

Harmonic analysis, Ergodic theory and Counting for thin groups

For a geometrically finite group Gamma of G=SO(n,1), we survey recent developments on counting and equidistribution problems for orbits of Gamma in a homogeneous space H\G where H is trivial, symmetric or horospherical. Main applications are found in an affine sieve on orbits of thin groups as well as in sphere counting problems for sphere packings invariant under a geometrically finite group. In our sphere counting problems, spheres can be ordered with respect to a general conformal metric.

Eigenvalues of congruence covers of geometrically finite hyperbolic manifolds

Let G=SO(n,1) and Gamma a geometrically finite Zariski dense subgroup of G which is contained in an arithmetic subgroup of G. Denoting by Gamma(q) the principal congruence subgroup of Gamma of level q, and fixing a positive number λ_0 strictly smaller than (n-1)^2/4, we show that, as q tends to infinity along primes, the number of Laplacian eigenvalues of the congruence cover Gamma(q)\ H^n smaller than lambda_0 is at most of order [Gamma:Gamma(q)]^c for some c=c(λ_0)>0.

Matrix coefficients, Counting and Primes for orbits of geometrically finite groups

Let G:=SO(n,1)^\circ and Γbe a geometrically finite Zariski dense subgroup with critical exponent delta bigger than (n-1)/2. Under a spectral gap hypothesis on L^2(Γ\ G), which is always satisfied for delta>(n-1)/2 for n=2,3 and for delta>n-2 for n>= 4, we obtain an {\it effective} archimedean counting result for a discrete orbit of Γin a homogeneous space H\G, where H is the trivial group, an affine symmetric subgroup or a horospherical subgroup. More precisely, we show that for any effectively well-rounded family {B_T} of compact subsets in H\G, there exists η>0 such that #[e]\G\cap B_T=M(B_T) +O(M(B_T)^{1-η}) for an explicit measure M on H\G, which depends on Gamma. We also apply affine sieve and describe the distribution of almost primes on orbits of Γin arithmetic settings. One of key ingredients in our approach is an effective asymptotic formula for the matrix coefficients of L^2(Γ\ G) that we prove by combining methods from spectral analysis, harmonic analysis and ergodic theory. An effective mixing for the Bowen-Margulis-Sullivan measure is also obtained as an application of our methods.

Effective Circle Count for Apollonian packings and Closed horospheres

The main result of this paper is an effective count for Apollonian circle packings that are either bounded or contain two parallel lines. We obtain this by proving an effective equidistribution of closed horospheres in the unit tangent bundle of a geometrically finite hyperbolic 3-manifold of infinite volume, whose fundamental group has critical exponent bigger than 1. We also discuss applications to Affine sieves. Analogous results for surfaces are treated as well.

The Asymptotic distribution of circles in the orbits of Kleinian groups

Let P be a locally finite circle packing in the plane invariant under a non-elementary Kleinian group Gamma and with finitely many Gamma-orbits. When Gamma is geometrically finite, we construct an explicit Borel measure on the plane which describes the asymptotic distribution of small circles in P, assuming that either the critical exponent of Gamma is strictly bigger than 1 or P does not contain an infinite bouquet of tangent circles glued at a parabolic fixed point of Gamma. Our construction also works for P invariant under a geometrically infinite group Gamma, provided Gamma admits a finite Bowen-Margulis-Sullivan measure and the Gamma-skinning size of P is finite. Some concrete circle packings to which our result applies include Apollonian circle packings, Sierpinski curves, Schottky dances, etc.

Almost prime Pythagorean triples in thin orbits

For the ternary quadratic form Q(x) = x^2 + y^2 - z^2 and a non-zero Pythagorean triple x_0 in Z^3 lying on the cone Q(x) = 0, we consider an orbit O = x_0 Gamma of a finitely generated subgroup Gamma < SO_Q(Z) with critical exponent exceeding 1/2. We find infinitely many Pythagorean triples in O whose hypotenuse, area, and product of side lengths have few prime factors, where "few" is explicitly quantified. We also compute the asymptotic of the number of such Pythagorean triples of norm at most T, up to bounded constants.

Apollonian circle packings and closed horospheres on hyperbolic 3-manifolds

We obtain an asymptotic formula for the number of circles of curvature at most T in any given bounded Apollonian circle packing. For an integral packing, we obtain the upper bounds for the number of circles with prime curvature as well as of pairs of circles with prime curvatures, which are sharp up constant multiples. The main ingredient of our proof is the effective equidistribution of expanding horospheres on geometrically finite hyperbolic 3-manifolds under the assumption that the critical exponent of its fundamental group exceeds one.

Dynamics on geometrically finite hyperbolic manifolds with applications to Apollonian circle packings and beyond

We present recent results on counting and distribution of circles in a given circle packing invariant under a geometrically finite Kleinian group and discuss how the dynamics of flows on geometrically finite hyperbolic $3$ manifolds are related. Our results apply to Apollonian circle packings, Sierpinski curves, Schottky dances, etc.

On the distribution of orbits of geometrically finite hyperbolic groups on the boundary (with appendix by Francois Maucourant)

We investigate the distribution of orbits of a non-elementary discrete hyperbolic group acting on the n-dimensional hyperbolic space and its geometric boundary. In particular, we show that if the group $Γ$ admits a finite Bowen-Margulis-Sullivan measure (for instance, if it is geometrically finite), then every $Γ$-orbit in the hyperbolic space is equidistributed with respect to the Patterson-Sullivan measure supported on the limit set of $Γ$.The appendix by Maucourant is the extension of a part of his thesis where he obtains the same result as a simple application of Roblin's theorem. Our approach is via establishing the equidistribution of solvable flows on the unit tangent bundle of the quotient manifold, which is of independent interest.

Rational points on homogeneous varieties and Equidistribution of Adelic periods

Let U:=L\G be a homogeneous variety defined over a number field K, where G is a connected semisimple K-group and L is a connected maximal semisimple K-subgroup of G with finite index in its normalizer. Assuming that G(K_v) acts transitively on U(K_v) for almost all places v of K, we obtain the asymptotic of the number of rational points in U(K) with height bounded by T, and settle new cases of Manin's conjecture for many wonderful varieties. The main ingredient of our approach is the equidistribution of semisimple adelic periods, which is established using the theory of unipotent flows.
