CP-Violation in the 3-Higgs Doublet Model: CP-Asymmetries from Charged Higgs Bosons and Electric Dipole Moments

We propose a CP-violating source in the charged Higgs sector of a 3-Higgs Doublet Model (3HDM) that will contribute to three CP-asymmetry observables for low energy processes. In the context of such a 3HDM, a measurement of one of the specific asymmetry observables (i.e., $\bar{B} \to X_{s+d} γ$) could obtain up to 2.5% or more, which would give a 5$σ$ evidence for physics Beyond the SM (BSM) from the full BELLE II data set. In addition to these CP-violating observables, the current measurements of Electron Dipole Moments (EDMs) constrain the available parameter region of the CP-violating 3HDM. In this work, we perform a thorough analysis of the parameter space of it to find the regions that satisfy EDMs, $\bar{B} \to X_s γ$, direct collider searches for charged Higgs bosons as well as theoretical bounds.

TASI 2013 lectures on Higgs physics within and beyond the Standard Model

These lectures start with a detailed pedagogical introduction to electroweak symmetry breaking in the Standard Model, including gauge boson and fermion mass generation and the resulting predictions for Higgs boson interactions. I then survey Higgs boson decays and production mechanisms at hadron and $e^+e^-$ colliders. I finish with two case studies of Higgs physics beyond the Standard Model: two-Higgs-doublet models, which I use to illustrate the concept of minimal flavor violation, and models with isospin-triplet scalar(s), which I use to illustrate the concept of custodial symmetry.

Unavoidable Higgs coupling deviations in the $Z_2$-symmetric Georgi-Machacek model

The $Z_{2}$-symmetric version of the Georgi-Machacek model does not possess a decoupling limit in which all the new particles can be made arbitrarily heavy, opening the possibility that the model can be entirely excluded if experiments reveal no deviations from the Standard Model. We explore this model, focusing on the part of parameter space in which the vacuum expectation value of the triplets, $ν_χ$, is small. In the small-$ν_χ$ limit, the second custodial-singlet scalar field $S$ necessarily becomes very light and can contribute to the total width of the 125 GeV Higgs boson $h$ via $h \to SS$. We show that this process, together with LHC measurements of the $h \to γγ$ rate, entirely excludes masses $m_S < m_h/2$ and thereby severely constrains the parameter space, setting an experimental lower bound $ν_χ\gtrsim 12.5$ GeV on the vacuum expectation value of the triplets. This lower bound makes it impossible to avoid deviations from the Standard Model in the couplings of $h$ to fermion and vector boson pairs. We study the remaining parameter space after imposing constraints from direct searches for the additional Higgs bosons, and show that it is on the edge of being fully excluded at $95\%$ confidence level by LHC measurements of the 125 GeV Higgs boson's couplings. Measurements of these couplings at the future high-luminosity run of the LHC will have sufficient precision to entirely exclude the model at $5σ$ if no deviations from the Standard Model are observed.

Custodial symmetry violation in the Georgi-Machacek model

We study the effects of custodial symmetry violation in the Georgi-Machacek (GM) model. The GM model adds isospin-triplet scalars to the Standard Model in a way that preserves custodial symmetry at tree level; however, this custodial symmetry has long been known to be violated at the one-loop level by hypercharge interactions. We consider the custodial-symmetric GM model to arise at some high scale as a result of an unspecified ultraviolet completion, and quantify the custodial symmetry violation induced as the model is run down to the weak scale. The measured value of the eletroweak rho parameter (along with unitarity considerations) lets us constrain the scale of the ultraviolet completion to lie below tens to hundreds of TeV. Subject to this constraint, we quantify the size of other custodial-symmetry-violating effects at the weak scale, including custodial symmetry violation in the couplings of the 125 GeV Higgs boson to W and Z boson pairs and mixings and mass splittings among the additional Higgs bosons in the theory. We find that these effects are small enough that they are unlikely to be probed by the Large Hadron Collider, but may be detectable at a future $e^+e^-$ collider.

Implications of the observation of dark matter self-interactions for singlet scalar dark matter

Evidence for dark matter self-interactions has recently been reported based on the observation of a spatial offset between the dark matter halo and the stars in a galaxy in the cluster Abell 3827. Interpreting the offset as due to dark matter self-interactions leads to a cross section measurement of sigma_DM/m ~ (1-1.5) cm^2/g, where m is the mass of the dark matter particle. We use this observation to constrain singlet scalar dark matter coupled to the Standard Model and to two-Higgs-doublet models. We show that the most natural scenario in this class of models is very light dark matter, below about 0.1 GeV, whose relic abundance is set by freeze-in, i.e., by slow production of dark matter in the early universe via extremely tiny interactions with the Higgs boson, never reaching thermal equilibrium. We also show that the dark matter abundance can be established through the usual thermal freeze-out mechanism in the singlet scalar extension of the Yukawa-aligned two-Higgs-doublet model, but that it requires rather severe fine tuning of the singlet scalar mass.

Updated constraints on the Georgi-Machacek model from LHC Run 2

We study the experimental constraints on the Georgi-Machacek model from direct searches for the new Higgs bosons and measurements of the properties of the discovered 125 GeV Higgs boson. We apply these by interfacing the public codes HiggsBounds 5.2.0 and HiggsSignals 2.2.1, which implement a large collection of direct-search constraints on extra Higgs bosons and measurements of the properties of the 125 GeV state to the model calculator GMCALC. We also implement constraints involving searches for doubly-charged Higgs bosons and Drell-Yan production of a neutral Higgs with decays to photon pairs directly into GMCALC; these channels are not included in HiggsBounds but provide important constraints on the model, especially at low mass. We identify new constraints on the model from $H_3^0 \to Z h$ and $H \to hh$ and point out that these channels remain promising. We also determine the allowed range of couplings of the SM-like Higgs boson after all experimental constraints are applied and show that the direct searches for additional Higgs bosons are generally more constraining than the measurements of the 125 GeV Higgs boson couplings. The updated GMCALC code will be released as version 1.5.0.

Constraining the Higgs couplings to up and down quarks using production kinematics at the CERN Large Hadron Collider

We study the prospects for constraining the Higgs boson's couplings to up and down quarks using kinematic distributions in Higgs production at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. We find that the Higgs $p_T$ distribution can be used to constrain these couplings with precision competitive to other proposed techniques. With 3000 fb$^{-1}$ of data at 13 TeV in the four-lepton decay channel, we find $-0.73 \lesssim \barκ_u \lesssim 0.33$ and $-0.88 \lesssim \barκ_d \lesssim 0.32$, where $\barκ_q = (m_q/m_b) κ_q$ is a scaling factor that modifies the $q$ quark Yukawa coupling relative to the Standard Model bottom quark Yukawa coupling. The sensitivity may be improved by including additional Higgs decay channels.

Probe of new light Higgs bosons from bottomonium chi_{b0} decay

We calculate the branching ratios of chi_{b0} --> tau+ tau- via an s-channel Higgs boson and estimate the sensitivity to this process from Upsilon --> gamma chi_{b0} --> gamma tau+ tau-. We show that future running at the Upsilon(3S) at a very high luminosity super B factory can put significant constraints on the Type-II two-Higgs-doublet model when the discovered 125 GeV Higgs boson is the heavier of the two CP-even scalars.

All the generalized Georgi-Machacek models

The Georgi-Machacek model adds two SU(2)_L-triplet scalars to the Standard Model in such a way as to preserve custodial SU(2) symmetry. We study the generalizations of the Georgi-Machacek model to SU(2)_L representations larger than triplets. Perturbative unitarity considerations limit the possibilities to models containing only SU(2)_L quartets, quintets, or sextets. These models are phenomenologically interesting because they allow the couplings of the 125 GeV Higgs boson to WW and ZZ to be larger than their values in the Standard Model. We write down the most general custodial SU(2)-preserving scalar potentials for these models and outline their phenomenology. We find that experimental and theoretical constraints on the fermiophobic custodial-fiveplet states present in each of the models lead to absolute upper bounds on the 125 GeV Higgs boson coupling strength to WW and ZZ.

Automatic predictions in the Georgi-Machacek model at next-to-leading order accuracy

We study the phenomenology of the Georgi-Machacek model at next-to-leading order (NLO) in QCD matched to parton shower, using a fully-automated tool chain based on MadGraph5_aMC@NLO and FeynRules. We focus on the production of the fermiophobic custodial fiveplet scalars H_5^0, H_5^+/-, and H_5^++/-- through vector boson fusion (VBF), associated production with a vector boson (V H_5), and scalar pair production (H_5 H_5). For these production mechanisms we compute NLO corrections to production rates as well as to differential distributions. Our results demonstrate that the Standard Model (SM) overall K-factors for such processes cannot in general be directly applied to beyond-the-SM distributions, due both to differences in the scalar electroweak charges and to variation of the K-factors over the differential distributions.

Enhanced hVV couplings in the Georgi-Machacek model and beyond

In this talk I discuss extended Higgs sectors in which the 125 GeV Higgs boson couplings to W and Z bosons can be larger than in the Standard Model. Constraints from perturbative unitarity and the electroweak rho parameter limit the number of possible models to a tractable few. Focusing on generalizations of the Georgi-Machacek model and taking advantage of the custodial symmetry, I show that existing experimental and theoretical constraints can be combined to set an upper limit on the enhancement of the Higgs couplings to W and Z bosons. This talk is based mostly on arXiv:1502.01275.

Hiding a Higgs width enhancement from off-shell gg (--> h*) --> ZZ measurements

Measurements of the off-shell Higgs boson production cross section in gg (--> h*) --> ZZ have recently been used by the CMS and ATLAS collaborations to indirectly constrain the total width of the Higgs boson. I point out that the interpretation of these measurements as a Higgs width constraint can be invalidated if additional neutral Higgs boson(s) are present with masses below about 350 GeV.

LHC constraints on large scalar multiplet models with a $Z_2$ symmetry

We study the LHC search constraints on models that extend the Standard Model (SM) with an inert, complex scalar electroweak multiplet, $Σ$, with isospin T=5/2 (sextet) or T=7/2 (octet) and identical hypercharge to the SM Higgs doublet. Imposing a global $Z_2$ symmetry under which $Σ\to -Σ$, the lightest member of $Σ$ is stable and we require that it be neutral ($ζ^{0,r}$) to avoid cosmological constraints from charged relics. Pair production of scalars by electroweak interactions followed by cascade decays to $ζ^{0,r}$ through W and Z emission produces signatures similar to those of supersymmetric electroweak gauginos, and we constrain the models by recasting a collection of such searches made with data from the 8 TeV run of the LHC. We find that there is no sensitivity from these searches to the compressed spectrum regime, in which the mass splittings between the lightest and heaviest states in $Σ$ are less than about 20 GeV. In the remaining parameter space, we find significant exclusions for $m_{ζ^{0,r}} \sim$ 80-180 GeV in the sextet model, and $m_{ζ^{0,r}} \sim$ 80-120 GeV in the octet model.

Two viable large scalar multiplet models with a Z2 symmetry

We study models in which the Higgs sector is extended by a single scalar electroweak multiplet Z with isospin T=5/2 (sextet) or 7/2 (octet) and the same hypercharge as the Standard Model Higgs doublet, in which Z is odd under a global Z2 symmetry. This Z2 symmetry keeps the lightest (neutral) member of Z stable and has interesting implications for phenomenology. We determine the constraints on these models from precision electroweak measurements and Higgs boson decays to two photons. We compute the thermal relic density of the stable member of Z and show that, for masses below 1 TeV, it can make up at most 1% of the dark matter in the universe. We also show that current dark matter direct detection experiments do not constrain the models, but future ton-scale experiments will probe their parameter space.

GMCALC: a calculator for the Georgi-Machacek model

The Georgi-Machacek model adds scalar triplets to the Standard Model Higgs sector in such a way as to preserve custodial SU(2) symmetry in the scalar potential. This allows the triplets to have a non-negligible vacuum expectation value while satisfying constraints from the rho parameter. Depending on the parameters, the 125~GeV neutral Higgs particle can have couplings to WW and ZZ larger than in the Standard Model due to mixing with the triplets. The model also contains singly- and doubly-charged Higgs particles that couple to vector boson pairs at tree level (WZ and like-sign WW, respectively). GMCALC is a self-contained FORTRAN program that, given a set of input parameters, calculates the particle spectrum and tree-level couplings in the Georgi-Machacek model, checks theoretical and indirect constraints, and computes the branching ratios and total widths of the scalars. It also generates a param_card.dat file for MadGraph5 to be used with the corresponding FeynRules model implementation.

Indirect constraints on the Georgi-Machacek model and implications for Higgs couplings

We update the indirect constraints on the Georgi-Machacek model from $B$-physics and electroweak precision observables, including new constraints from $b \to s γ$ and $B^0_s \to μ^+ μ^-$. We illustrate the effect of these constraints on the couplings of the Standard Model-like Higgs boson by performing scans using the most general scalar potential, subject to vacuum stability and perturbativity constraints. We find that simultaneous enhancements of all the Higgs production cross sections by up to 39\% are still allowed after imposing these constraints. LHC rate measurements on the Higgs pole could be blind to these enhancements if unobserved non-standard Higgs decays are present.

The decoupling limit in the Georgi-Machacek model

We study the most general scalar potential of the Georgi-Machacek model, which adds isospin-triplet scalars to the Standard Model (SM) in a way that preserves custodial SU(2) symmetry. We show that this model possesses a decoupling limit, in which the predominantly-triplet states become heavy and degenerate while the couplings of the remaining light neutral scalar approach those of the SM Higgs boson. We find that the SM-like Higgs boson couplings to fermion pairs and gauge boson pairs can deviate from their SM values by corrections as large as $\mathcal{O}(v^2/M_{\rm new}^2)$, where $v$ is the SM Higgs vacuum expectation value and $M_{\rm new}$ is the mass scale of the predominantly-triplet states. In particular, the SM-like Higgs boson couplings to $W$ and $Z$ boson pairs can decouple much more slowly than in two Higgs doublet models, in which they deviate from their SM values like $\mathcal{O}(v^4/M_{\rm new}^4)$. Furthermore, near the decoupling limit the SM-like Higgs boson couplings to $W$ and $Z$ pairs are always larger than their SM values, which cannot occur in two Higgs doublet models. As such, a precision measurement of Higgs couplings to $W$ and $Z$ pairs may provide an effective method of distinguishing the Georgi-Machacek model from two Higgs doublet models. Using numerical scans, we show that the coupling deviations can reach 10% for $M_{\rm new}$ as large as 800~GeV.

Constraining models with a large scalar multiplet

Models in which the Higgs sector is extended by a single electroweak scalar multiplet X can possess an accidental global U(1) symmetry at the renormalizable level if X has isospin T greater or equal to 2. We show that all such U(1)-symmetric models are excluded by the interplay of the cosmological relic density of the lightest (neutral) component of X and its direct detection cross section via Z exchange. The sole exception is the T=2 multiplet, whose lightest member decays on a few-day to few-year timescale via a Planck-suppressed dimension-5 operator.

Discriminators of 2 Higgs Doublets at the LHC14, ILC and MuonCollider(125): A Snowmasss White Paper

The historic LHC discovery of the 125 GeV particle with properties that closely resemble the Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson verifies our understanding of electroweak symmetry breaking, but solidifies the need for a resolution to the hierarchy problem. Many extensions of the SM that address the hierarchy problem contain a non-minimal Higgs sector. Therefore, as a benchmark alternative to the SM Higgs mechanism, we study a general 2 Higgs doublet model (2HDM-G) framework for evaluating future sensitivity to Higgs couplings. We study how well it can be distinguished from the SM Higgs boson by future measurements at LHC14, ILC (250, 500,1000 GeV) and a Muon Collider (125 GeV). Additionally, our study bears on singlet Higgs extensions of two Higgs doublet models through predicted coupling relationships.

High-energy suppression of the Higgsstrahlung cross-section in the Minimal Composite Higgs Model

If the Higgs boson is composite, signs of this compositeness should appear via a formfactor-like suppression of Higgs scattering cross sections at momentum transfers above the compositeness scale. We explore this by computing the cross section for e+e- ---> ZH (Higgsstrahlung) in a warped five-dimensional gauge-Higgs unification model known as the Minimal Composite Higgs Model (MCHM). We observe that the Higgsstrahlung cross section in the MCHM is strongly suppressed compared to that in the Standard Model at center-of-mass energies above the scale of the first Kaluza-Klein excitations, due to cancellations among the contributions of successive Z boson Kaluza-Klein modes. We also show that the magnitude and sign of the coupling of the first Kaluza-Klein mode can be measured at a future electron-positron collider such as the proposed International Linear Collider or Compact Linear Collider.

Learning what the Higgs boson is mixed with

The Standard Model Higgs boson may be mixed with another scalar that does not couple to fermions. The electroweak quantum numbers of such an additional scalar can be determined by measuring the quartic Higgs-Higgs-vector-vector couplings, which contribute---along with the coveted triple Higgs coupling---to double Higgs production in $e^+e^-$ collisions. We show that simultaneous sensitivity to the quartic Higgs-Higgs-vector-vector coupling and the triple Higgs coupling can be obtained using measurements of the double Higgs production cross section at two different e+e- center-of-mass energies. Kinematic distributions of the two Higgs bosons in the final state could provide additional discriminating power.

Scrutinizing h(125) in Two Higgs Doublet Models at the LHC, ILC, and Muon Collider

The discovery at the LHC of a scalar particle with properties that are so far consistent with the SM Higgs boson is one of the most important advances in the history of particle physics. The challenge of future collider experiments is to determine whether its couplings will show deviations from the SM Higgs, as this would indicate new physics at the TeV scale, and also to probe the flavor structure of the Yukawa couplings. As a benchmark alternative to the SM Higgs, we consider a generic two Higgs doublet model (2HDM) and analyze the precision to which the LHC14, an ILC250, 500, 1000 GeV and a 125 GeV Muon Collider (MC) can determine the gauge and Yukawa couplings. We allow for correlations among the couplings. We include the impact of a Higgs total width measurement, indirectly at the LHC and ILC and by a direct scan at the MC. We also discuss pattern relations among the couplings that can test for singlet or doublet Higgs extensions of 2HDMs.

The International Linear Collider Technical Design Report - Volume 2: Physics

The International Linear Collider Technical Design Report (TDR) describes in four volumes the physics case and the design of a 500 GeV centre-of-mass energy linear electron-positron collider based on superconducting radio-frequency technology using Niobium cavities as the accelerating structures. The accelerator can be extended to 1 TeV and also run as a Higgs factory at around 250 GeV and on the Z0 pole. A comprehensive value estimate of the accelerator is give, together with associated uncertainties. It is shown that no significant technical issues remain to be solved. Once a site is selected and the necessary site-dependent engineering is carried out, construction can begin immediately. The TDR also gives baseline documentation for two high-performance detectors that can share the ILC luminosity by being moved into and out of the beam line in a "push-pull" configuration. These detectors, ILD and SiD, are described in detail. They form the basis for a world-class experimental programme that promises to increase significantly our understanding of the fundamental processes that govern the evolution of the Universe.

Can the 126 GeV boson be a pseudoscalar?

We test the possibility that the newly-discovered 126 GeV boson is a pseudoscalar by examining the correlations among the loop-induced pseudoscalar decay branching fractions to $γγ$, $ZZ^*$, $Zγ$, and $WW^*$ final states in a model-independent way. These four decays are controlled by only two effective operators, so that the rates in $Zγ$ and $WW^*$ are predicted now that the rates in $γγ$ and $ZZ^*,Zγ^* \to 4 \ell$ have been measured. We find that the pseudoscalar possibility is disfavored but not conclusively excluded. Experimental exclusion of the $Zγ$ decay to well below $σ/σ_{\rm SM} \sim 170$ or conclusive observation of the $WW^*$ decay near the Standard Model rate would eliminate the pseudoscalar possibility. The $Zγ$ exclusion should be possible using existing data. The only loophole in our argument is the possibility that the $4\ell$ signal comes from pseudoscalar decays to a pair of new neutral gauge bosons with mass near the $Z$ pole.

Constraints on large scalar multiplets from perturbative unitarity

We determine the constraints on the isospin and hypercharge of a scalar electroweak multiplet from partial-wave unitarity of tree-level scattering diagrams. The constraint from SU(2)_L interactions yields T <= 7/2 (i.e., n <= 8) for a complex scalar multiplet and T <= 4 (i.e., n <= 9) for a real scalar multiplet, where n = 2T+1 is the number of isospin states in the multiplet.

Discovering Strong Top Dynamics at the LHC

We analyze the phenomenology of the top-pion and top-Higgs states in models with strong top dynamics, and translate the present LHC searches for the Standard Model Higgs into bounds on these scalar states. We explore the possibility that the new state at a mass of approximately 125 GeV observed at the LHC is consistent with a neutral pseudoscalar top-pion state. We demonstrate that a neutral pseudoscalar top-pion can generate the diphoton signal at the observed rate. However, the region of model parameter space where this is the case does not correspond to classic topcolor-assisted technicolor scenarios with degenerate charged and neutral top-pions and a top-Higgs mass of order twice the top mass; rather, additional isospin violation would need to be present and the top dynamics would be more akin to that in top seesaw models. Moreover, the interpretation of the new state as a top-pion can be sustained only if the ZZ (four-lepton) and WW (two-lepton plus missing energy) signatures initially observed at the 3? level decline in significance as additional data is accrued.

Dark matter annihilation through a lepton-specific Higgs boson

It was recently argued by Hooper and Goodenough [arXiv:1010.2752] that the excess gamma ray emission from within 1-2 degrees of the galactic center can be well-described by annihilation of ~8 GeV dark matter particles into tau pairs. I show that such a dark matter signal can be obtained naturally in the lepton-specific two-Higgs-doublet model extended by a stable singlet scalar dark matter candidate. The favored parameter region prefers a light Higgs state (below 200 GeV) with enhanced couplings to leptons and sizable invisible branching fraction. Part of the favored region leads to invisible decays of both of the CP-even neutral Higgs states.

Dilaton constraints and LHC prospects

The Standard Model Higgs searches using the first 1-2 fb-1 of LHC data can be used to put interesting constraints on new scalar particles other than the Higgs. We investigate one such scenario in which electroweak symmetry is broken via strongly coupled conformal dynamics. This scenario contains a neutral scalar dilaton---the Goldstone boson associated with spontaneously broken scale invariance---with a mass below the conformal symmetry breaking scale and couplings to Standard Model particles similar (but not identical) to those of the Standard Model Higgs boson. We translate the LEP and LHC Higgs limits to constrain the dilaton mass and conformal breaking scale. The conformal breaking scale f is constrained to be above 1 TeV for dilaton masses between 145 and 600 GeV, though it can be as low as 400 GeV for dilaton masses below 110 GeV. We also show that (i) a dilaton chi with mass below 110 GeV and consistent with the LEP constraints can appear in gg --> chi --> gamma gamma with a rate up to ~10 times the corresponding Standard Model Higgs rate, and (ii) a dilaton with mass of several hundred GeV is much narrower than the corresponding Standard Model Higgs, leading to improved search sensitivity in chi --> ZZ --> 4l.

LHC Limits on the Top-Higgs in Models with Strong Top-Quark Dynamics

LHC searches for the standard model Higgs Boson in WW or ZZ decay modes place strong constraints on the top-Higgs state predicted in many models with new dynamics preferentially affecting top quarks. Such a state couples strongly to top-quarks, and is therefore produced through gluon fusion at a rate enhanced relative to the rate for the standard model Higgs boson. A top-Higgs state with mass less than 300 GeV is excluded at 95% CL if the associated top-pion has a mass of 150 GeV, and the constraint is even stronger if the mass of the top-pion state exceeds the top-quark mass or if the top-pion decay constant is a substantial fraction of the weak scale. These results have significant implications for theories with strong top dynamics, such as topcolor-assisted technicolor, top-seesaw models, and certain Higgsless models.

Model-independent Higgs coupling measurements at the LHC using the H \to ZZ \to 4l lineshape

We show that combining a direct measurement of the Higgs total width from the H \to ZZ \to 4l lineshape with Higgs signal rate measurements allows Higgs couplings to be extracted in a model-independent way from CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) data. Using existing experimental studies with 30 fb-1 at one detector of the 14 TeV LHC, we show that the couplings-squared of a 190 GeV Higgs to WW, ZZ, and gg can be extracted with statistical precisions of about 10%, and a 95% confidence level upper limit on an unobserved component of the Higgs decay width of about 22% of the SM Higgs width can be set. The method can also be applied for heavier Higgs masses.

Top-Higgs and Top-pion phenomenology in the Top Triangle Moose model

We discuss the deconstructed version of a topcolor-assisted technicolor model wherein the mechanism of top quark mass generation is separated from the rest of electroweak symmetry breaking. The minimal deconstructed version of this scenario is a "triangle moose" model, where the top quark gets its mass from coupling to a top-Higgs field, while the gauge boson masses are generated from a Higgsless sector. The spectrum of the model includes scalar (top-Higgs) and pseudoscalar (top-pion) states. In this paper, we study the properties of these particles, discuss their production mechanisms and decay modes, and suggest how best to search for them at the LHC.

Topcolor in the LHC Era

Ongoing LHC searches for the standard model Higgs Boson in WW or ZZ decay modes strongly constrain the top-Higgs state predicted in many models with new dynamics that preferentially affects top quarks. Such a state couples strongly to top-quarks, and is therefore produced through gluon fusion at a rate that can be greatly enhanced relative to the rate for the standard model Higgs boson. As we discuss in this talk, a top-Higgs state with mass less than 300 GeV is excluded at 95% CL if the associated top-pion has a mass of 150 GeV, and the constraint is even stronger if the mass of the top-pion state exceeds the top-quark mass or if the top-pion decay constant is a substantial fraction of the weak scale. These results have significant implications for theories with strong top dynamics, such as topcolor-assisted technicolor, top-seesaw models, and certain Higgsless models.

Yukawa alignment from natural flavor conservation

We study the charged Higgs couplings to fermions in the "democratic" three-Higgs-doublet model, in which one doublet couples to down-type quarks, one to up-type quarks, and one to charged leptons. Flavor-changing neutral Higgs couplings are absent because the Glashow-Weinberg-Paschos condition for natural flavor conservation is in effect. We show that this model reproduces the coupling structure of the charged Higgs boson in the recently-proposed Yukawa-aligned two-Higgs-doublet model, with two subtle constraints that arise from the unitarity of the charged Higgs mixing matrix. Adding a fourth Higgs doublet with no couplings to fermions eliminates these constraints.

Charged Higgs phenomenology in the flipped two Higgs doublet model

We study the phenomenology of the charged Higgs boson in the "flipped" two Higgs doublet model, in which one doublet gives mass to up-type quarks and charged leptons and the other gives mass to down-type quarks. We present the charged Higgs branching ratios and summarize the indirect constraints. We extrapolate existing LEP searches for H+H- and Tevatron searches for t tbar with t --> H+ b into the flipped model and extract constraints on MH+ and the parameter tan(beta). We finish by reviewing existing LHC charged Higgs searches and suggest that the LHC reach in this model could be extended for charged Higgs masses below the tb threshold by considering t tbar with t --> H+ b and H+ --> q qbar, as has been used in Tevatron searches.

Higgs couplings in a model with triplets

We study the couplings of a CP-even neutral Higgs boson h in a model containing one scalar SU(2)_L doublet, one real triplet, and one complex triplet with hypercharge 1. Because the two triplets contribute to the rho parameter with opposite signs, the triplet vacuum expectation values can be sizable. We show that (i) the hWW and hZZ couplings can be larger than the corresponding values in the Standard Model, and (ii) the ratio of the WW and ZZ couplings of h can be different than the corresponding ratio in the Standard Model. Neither of these results can occur in models containing only Higgs doublets. We also compute the rates for gg --> h --> WW and gg --> h --> ZZ and find that, for reasonable parameter values and M_h ~ 140-180 GeV, the hadron collider rate for gg --> h --> WW (ZZ) can be up to 20% (5 times) larger than in the Standard Model. We discuss implications for Higgs coupling extraction at the LHC.

LHC phenomenology of a two-Higgs-doublet neutrino mass model

We study the LHC search prospects for a model in which the neutrinos obtain Dirac masses from couplings to a second Higgs doublet with tiny vacuum expectation value. The model contains a charged Higgs boson that decays to l nu with branching fractions controlled by the neutrino masses and mixing angles as measured in neutrino oscillation experiments. The most promising signal is electroweak production of H+ H- pairs with decays to l l' pTmiss, where l l' = e+ e-, mu+ mu-, and e+- mu-+. We find that a cut on the kinematic variable M_{T2} eliminates most of the t t and W-pair background. Depending on the neutrino mass spectrum and mixing angles, a 100 (300) GeV charged Higgs could be discovered at the LHC with as little as 8 (24) fb-1 of integrated luminosity at 14 TeV pp center-of-mass energy.

In each case we present the couplings of a light neutral CP-even Higgs state h in terms of the model parameters, and identify which models are distinguishable in principle based on this information. We also give explicit expressions for the model parameters in terms of h couplings and exhibit the behaviors of the couplings in the limit where the deviations from the Standard Model Higgs couplings are small. Finally we discuss prospects for differentiation of extended Higgs models based on measurements at the LHC and ILC and identify the regions in which these experiments could detect deviations from the SM Higgs predictions.

e+e- --> H+ e- nubar in the two-Higgs-doublet model

We calculate the cross section for e+e- --> H+ e- nubar in the two-Higgs-doublet model from one-loop diagrams involving top and bottom quarks. This process offers the possibility of producing the charged Higgs boson at the e+e- collider when its mass is more than half the center-of-mass energy, so that charged Higgs pair production is kinematically forbidden. The cross section receives contributions from both s-channel and t-channel processes; the s-channel contribution dominates for center-of-mass energies of 1 TeV and below. About 80% of the s-channel contribution comes from the resonant process e+e- --> H+ W-, with W- --> e- nubar. The cross section is generally small, below 0.01 fb for tan beta > 2, and falls with increasing tan beta.

Loop induced decays of the Little Higgs: H --> gg, gamma gamma

We analyze the loop induced decays of the Higgs boson into pairs of gluons and photons in the Littlest Higgs model. We find that the deviation of the partial widths for these decays relative to their Standard Model values scales with 1/f^2, where f ~ TeV is the mass scale of the new heavy particles in the model. For f = 1 TeV, Gamma(H -> gg) is reduced by 6-10% and Gamma(H -> gamma gamma) is reduced by 5-7% compared to their Standard Model values. While the LHC and a linear e+e- collider would be sensitive to these deviations only for relatively low values of f <~ 650 GeV, a photon collider could probe the deviation in Gamma(H -> gamma gamma) up to f <~ 1.1 (0.7) TeV at the 2 (5) sigma level.

Little Higgs Phenomenology

Recently a new class of models has emerged that addresses the naturalness problem of a light Higgs boson. In these ''little Higgs'' models, the Standard Model Higgs boson is a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson of an approximate global symmetry. The Higgs boson acquires mass radiatively only through ''collective breaking'' of the global symmetry, so that more than one interaction is required to give the Higgs a mass. This protects the Higgs mass from receiving quadratically divergent radiative corrections at one-loop. These models contain new vector bosons, fermions and scalars at the TeV scale that cancel the quadratic divergences in the Higgs mass due to the Standard Model gauge, top quark, and Higgs boson loops. In this talk I review the phenomenology of the little Higgs models, focusing on collider signatures and electroweak precision constraints.

Distinguishing a MSSM Higgs Boson from the SM Higgs Boson at a Linear Collider

The decoupling properties of the Higgs sector in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) imply that a light CP-even Higgs boson discovered at the Tevatron or LHC may closely resemble the Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson. In this paper, we investigate how precision measurements of Higgs properties at a Linear Collider (LC) can distinguish between a CP-even Higgs boson of the MSSM and the SM Higgs boson. We review the expected theoretical behavior of the partial widths and branching ratios for decays of the neutral MSSM Higgs bosons with significant couplings to the W and Z bosons, including the leading radiative corrections to the mixing angle alpha and tan beta-enhanced vertex corrections. The general expectation is that the Higgs couplings to W+W-, ZZ, c cbar and t tbar should quickly approach their SM values for increasing CP-odd Higgs mass mA, while the couplings to b bbar and tau+ tau- do so more slowly. Using the expected experimental and theoretical accuracy in determining SM branching ratios and partial widths, we demonstrate the sensitivity of measurements at the LC to variations in the MSSM parameters, with particular attention to the decoupling limit. For a wide range of MSSM parameters, the LC is sensitive to mA ~ 600 GeV almost independently of tan beta. For large values of tan beta and some specific choices of MSSM parameters [e.g., A_t mu < 0 and |A_t| ~ |mu| ~ O(M_S)], one of the CP-even Higgs bosons can be SM-like independent of the value of mA. In the case of large deviations from the SM, we present a procedure using Higgs coupling measurements to extract the supersymmetric correction to the relation between the b quark mass and Yukawa coupling.

B_{s,d} -> l+ l- in a Two-Higgs-Doublet Model

We compute the branching fractions of B_{s,d} -> l+ l- in the type-II two-Higgs-doublet model with large tan(beta). We find that the parameters of the neutral Higgs sector of the two-Higgs-doublet model cancel in the result, so that the branching fractions depend only on the charged Higgs mass and tan(beta). For large values of tan(beta) and a charged Higgs mass above the bound from b -> s gamma, we find that the branching fractions can be enhanced by up to an order of magnitude or suppressed by up to a factor of two compared to the Standard Model result. We point out that previous calculations in the literature are gauge-dependent due to the omission of an important diagram, which gives the dominant contribution in the 't Hooft-Feynman gauge. We have analyzed in detail the region of the (M_{H^+}, tan(beta)) plane to be probed by searches for B_s -> mu+ mu- in Run II of the Tevatron. Since the branching fraction increases like tan^4(beta), this decay mode is complementary to b -> s gamma and efficiently probes the large tan(beta) region. For tan(beta)=60, an integrated luminosity of 20 fb^{-1} in an extended Run II will probe charged Higgs masses up to 260 GeV, if the background to B_s -> mu+ mu- is small. For the same value of tan(beta), the LHC may be able to explore charged Higgs masses up to 1 TeV using this decay.

SUSY-QCD corrections to the MSSM $h^0 b \bar b$ vertex in the decoupling limit

We analyze the supersymmetric (SUSY) QCD contribution to the $h^0 b \bar{b}$ coupling at one loop in the Minimal Supersymmetric Model (MSSM) in the decoupling limit. Analytic expressions in the large SUSY mass region are derived and the decoupling behavior of the corrections is examined in various limiting cases, where some or all of the SUSY mass parameters become large. We show that in the decoupling limit of large SUSY mass parameters and large CP-odd Higgs mass, the $h^0 b \bar b$ coupling approaches its Standard Model value at one loop. However, the onset of decoupling is delayed when $\tanβ$ is large. In addition, the one-loop SUSY-QCD corrections decouple if the masses of either the bottom squarks or the gluino are separately taken large; although the approach to decoupling is significantly slower in the latter case.
