Phase transition in a 1d driven tracer model

The effect of particle overtaking on transport in a narrow channel is studied using a 1d model of a driven tracer in a quiescent bath. In contrast with the well-studied non-driven case, where the tracer's long-time dynamics changes from sub-diffusive to diffusive whenever overtaking is allowed, the driven tracer is shown to exhibit a phase transition at a finite overtaking rate. The transition separates a phase in which the stationary bath density profile, as seen in the tracer's frame, is extended, as in the non-overtaking case, to a phase with a localized bath density profile. In the extended phase the tracer velocity vanishes in the thermodynamic limit while it remains finite in the localized phase. The phase diagram of the model, as well as the tracer velocity and the bath density profile in both phases, are studied, demonstrating their distinct features.

Orthogonal versus covariant Lyapunov vectors for rough hard disk systems

The Oseledec splitting of the tangent space into covariant subspaces for a hyperbolic dynamical system is numerically accessible by computing the full set of covariant Lyapunov vectors. In this paper, the covariant Lyapunov vectors, the orthogonal Gram-Schmidt vectors, and the corresponding local (time-dependent) Lyapunov exponents, are analyzed for a planar system of rough hard disks (RHDS). These results are compared to respective results for a smooth-hard-disk system (SHDS). We find that the rotation of the disks deeply affects the Oseledec splitting and the structure of the tangent space. For both the smooth and rough hard disks, the stable, unstable and central manifolds are transverse to each other, although the minimal angle between the unstable and stable manifolds of the RHDS typically is very small. Both systems are hyperbolic. However, the central manifold is precisely orthogonal to the rest of the tangent space only for the smooth-particle case and not for the rough disks. We also demonstrate that the rotations destroy the Hamiltonian character for the rough-hard-disk system.

Symmetry properties of orthogonal and covariant Lyapunov vectors and their exponents

Lyapunov exponents are indicators for the chaotic properties of a classical dynamical system. They are most naturally defined in terms of the time evolution of a set of so-called covariant vectors, co-moving with the linearized flow in tangent space. Taking a simple spring pendulum and the Hénon-Heiles system as examples, we demonstrate the consequences of symplectic symmetry and of time-reversal invariance for such vectors, and study the transformation between different parameterizations of the flow.

Dynamics of threads and polymers in turbulence: power-law distributions and synchronization

We study the behavior of threads and polymers in a turbulent flow. These objects have finite spatial extension, so the flow along them differs slightly. The corresponding drag forces produce a finite average stretching and the thread is stretched most of the time. Nevertheless, the probability of shrinking fluctuations is significant and is known to decay only as a power-law. We show that the exponent of the power law is a universal number independent of the statistics of the flow. For polymers the coil-stretch transition exists: the flow must have a sufficiently large Lyapunov exponent to overcome the elastic resistance and stretch the polymer from the coiled state it takes otherwise. The probability of shrinking from the stretched state above the transition again obeys a power law but with a non-universal exponent. We show that well above the transition the exponent becomes universal and derive the corresponding expression. Furthermore, we demonstrate synchronization: the end-to-end distances of threads or polymers above the transition are synchronized by the flow and become identical. Thus, the transition from Newtonian to non-Newtonian behavior in dilute polymer solutions can be seen as an ordering transition.

Covariant Lyapunov vectors for rigid disk systems

We carry out extensive computer simulations to study the Lyapunov instability of a two-dimensional hard disk system in a rectangular box with periodic boundary conditions. The system is large enough to allow the formation of Lyapunov modes parallel to the x axis of the box. The Oseledec splitting into covariant subspaces of the tangent space is considered by computing the full set of covariant perturbation vectors co-moving with the flow in tangent-space. These vectors are shown to be transversal, but generally not orthogonal to each other. Only the angle between covariant vectors associated with immediate adjacent Lyapunov exponents in the Lyapunov spectrum may become small, but the probability of this angle to vanish approaches zero. The stable and unstable manifolds are transverse to each other and the system is hyperbolic.

Time-reversed symmetry and covariant Lyapunov vectors for simple particle models in and out of thermal equilibrium

Recently, a new algorithm for the computation of covariant Lyapunov vectors and of corresponding local Lyapunov exponents has become available. Here we study the properties of these still unfamiliar quantities for a number of simple models, including an harmonic oscillator coupled to a thermal gradient with a two-stage thermostat, which leaves the system ergodic and fully time reversible. We explicitly demonstrate how time-reversal invariance affects the perturbation vectors in tangent space and the associated local Lyapunov exponents. We also find that the local covariant exponents vary discontinuously along directions transverse to the phase flow.
