Exceptional Legendrian torus knots

We present classification results for exceptional Legendrian realisations of torus knots. These are the first results of that kind for non-trivial topological knot types. Enumeration results of Ding-Li-Zhang concerning tight contact structures on certain Seifert fibred manifolds with boundary allow us to place upper bounds on the number of tight contact structures on the complements of torus knots; the classification of exceptional realisations of these torus knots is then achieved by exhibiting sufficiently many realisations in terms of contact surgery diagrams. We also discuss a couple of general theorems about the existence of exceptional Legendrian knots.

Contact structures on principal circle bundles

We describe a necessary and sufficient condition for a principal circle bundle over an even-dimensional manifold to carry an invariant contact structure. As a corollary it is shown that all circle bundles over a given base manifold carry an invariant contact structure, only provided the trivial bundle does. In particular, all circle bundles over 4-manifolds admit invariant contact structures. We also discuss the Bourgeois construction of contact structures on odd-dimensional tori in this context, and we relate our results to recent work of Massot, Niederkrueger and Wendl on weak symplectic fillings in higher dimensions.

Contact structures and geometric topology

This is a survey on contact open books and contact Dehn surgery. The relation between these two concepts is discussed, and various applications are sketched, e.g. the monodromy of Stein fillable contact 3-manifolds, the Giroux-Goodman proof of Harer's conjecture on fibred links, construction of symplectic caps to fillings (Eliashberg, Etnyre), and detection of non-loose Legendrian knots with the help of contact surgery.

Diagrams for contact 5-manifolds

According to Giroux, contact manifolds can be described as open books whose pages are Stein manifolds. For 5-dimensional contact manifolds the pages are Stein surfaces, which permit a description via Kirby diagrams. We introduce handle moves on such diagrams that do not change the corresponding contact manifold. As an application, we derive classification results for subcritically Stein fillable contact 5-manifolds and characterise the standard contact structure on the 5-sphere in terms of such fillings. This characterisation is discussed in the context of the Andrews-Curtis conjecture concerning presentations of the trivial group. We further illustrate the use of such diagrams by a covering theorem for simply connected spin 5-manifolds and a new existence proof for contact structures on simply connected 5-manifolds.

Generalised spin structures on 2-dimensional orbifolds

Generalised spin structures, or r-spin structures, on a 2-dimensional orbifold Σare r-fold fibrewise connected coverings (also called r-th roots) of its unit tangent bundle STΣ. We investigate such structures on hyperbolic orbifolds. The conditions on r for such structures to exist are given. The action of the diffeomorphism group of Σon the set of r-spin structures is described, and we determine the number of orbits under this action and their size. These results are then applied to describe the moduli space of taut contact circles on left-quotients of the 3-dimensional geometry \tilde{SL}_2.

Contact structures on product five-manifolds and fibre sums along circles

Two constructions of contact manifolds are presented: (i) products of S^1 with manifolds admitting a suitable decomposition into two exact symplectic pieces and (ii) fibre connected sums along isotropic circles. Baykur has found a decomposition as required for (i) for all closed, oriented 4-manifolds. As a corollary, we can show that all closed, oriented 5-manifolds that are Cartesian products of lower-dimensional manifolds carry a contact structure. For symplectic 4-manifolds we exhibit an alternative construction of such a decomposition; this gives us control over the homotopy type of the corresponding contact structure. In particular, we prove that CP^2 \times S^1 admits a contact structure in every homotopy class of almost contact structures. The existence of contact structures is also established for a large class of 5-manifolds with fundamental group Z_2.

A homogeneous Gibbons-Hawking ansatz and Blaschke products

A homogeneous Gibbons-Hawking ansatz is described, leading to 4-dimensional hyperkahler metrics with homotheties. In combination with Blaschke products on the unit disc in the complex plane, this ansatz allows one to construct infinite-dimensional families of such hyperkahler metrics that are, in a suitable sense, complete. Our construction also gives rise to incomplete metrics on 3-dimensional contact manifolds that induce complete Carnot-Caratheodory distances.

Contact spheres and hyperkähler geometry

A taut contact sphere on a 3-manifold is a linear 2-sphere of contact forms, all defining the same volume form. In the present paper we completely determine the moduli of taut contact spheres on compact left-quotients of SU(2) (the only closed manifolds admitting such structures). We also show that the moduli space of taut contact spheres embeds into the moduli space of taut contact circles. This moduli problem leads to a new viewpoint on the Gibbons-Hawking ansatz in hyperkahler geometry. The classification of taut contact spheres on closed 3-manifolds includes the known classification of 3-Sasakian 3-manifolds, but the local Riemannian geometry of contact spheres is much richer. We construct two examples of taut contact spheres on open subsets of 3-space with nontrivial local geometry; one from the Helmholtz equation on the 2-sphere, and one from the Gibbons-Hawking ansatz. We address the Bernstein problem whether such examples can give rise to complete metrics.

Legendrian helix and cable links

Lisa Traynor has described an example of a two-component Legendrian `circular helix link' in the 1-jet space of the circle (with its canonical contact structure) that is topologically but not Legendrian isotopic to that same link with the order of the two components reversed. We give a complete classification of the Legendrian realisations of this topological link type, as well as all other `cable links' in that 1-jet space.

Contact geometry

This is an introductory text on the more topological aspects of contact geometry, written for the Handbook of Differential Geometry vol. 2. After discussing (and proving) some of the fundamental results of contact topology (neighbourhood theorems, isotopy extension theorems, approximation theorems), I move on to a detailed exposition of the original proof of the Lutz-Martinet theorem. The text ends with a guide to the literature.
