We prove that if G is an Abelian group and A1,…,Ak⊆G satisfy mAi=G (the m-fold sumset), then A1+…+Ak=G provided that k≥cmlogn. This generalizes a result of Alon, Linial, and Meshulam [Additive bases of vector spaces over prime fields. J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 57(2):203--210, 1991] regarding the so called additive bases.
The Kruskal-Katona theorem together with a theorem of Razborov determine the closure of the set of points defined by the homomorphism density of the edge and the triangle in finite graphs. The boundary of this region is a countable union of algebraic curves, and in particular, it is almost everywhere differentiable. One can more generally consider the region defined by the homomorphism densities of a list of given graphs, and ask whether the boundary is as well-behaved as in the case of the triangle and the edge. Towards answering this question in the negative, we construct examples which show that the restrictions of the boundary to certain hyperplanes can have nowhere differentiable parts.
A critical set in an n×n Latin square is a minimal set of entries that uniquely identifies it among all Latin squares of the same size. It is conjectured by Nelder in 1979, and later independently by Mahmoodian, and Bate and van Rees that the size of the smallest critical set is ⌊n2/4⌋. We prove a lower-bound of n2/104 for sufficiently large n, and thus confirm the quadratic order predicted by the conjecture. This improves a recent lower-bound of Ω(n3/2) due to Cavenagh and Ramadurai. From the point of view of computational learning theory, the size of the smallest critical set corresponds to the minimum teaching dimension of the set of Latin squares. We study two related notions of dimension from learning theory. We prove a lower-bound of n2−(e+o(1))n5/3 for both of the VC-dimension and the recursive teaching dimension.
We consider the standard two-party communication model. The central problem studied in this article is how much one can save in information complexity by allowing an error of ε. For arbitrary functions, we obtain lower bounds and upper bounds indicating a gain that is of order Ω(h(ε)) and O(h(ε)). Here h denotes the binary entropy function. We analyze the case of the two-bit AND function in detail to show that for this function the gain is Θ(h(ε)). This answers a question of [M. Braverman, A. Garg, D. Pankratov, and O. Weinstein, From information to exact communication (extended abstract), STOC'13]. We obtain sharp bounds for the set disjointness function of order n. For the case of the distributional error, we introduce a new protocol that achieves a gain of Θ(h(ε)) provided that n is sufficiently large. We apply these results to answer another of question of Braverman et al. regarding the randomized communication complexity of the set disjointness function. Answering a question of [Mark Braverman, Interactive information complexity, STOC'12], we apply our analysis of the set disjointness function to establish a gap between the two different notions of the prior-free information cost. This implies that amortized randomized communication complexity is not necessarily equal to the amortized distributional communication complexity with respect to the hardest distribution.
Given α1,...,αm∈(0,1), we characterize all integrable functions f:[0,1]m→C satisfying ∫A1×...×Amf=0 for any collection of disjoint sets A1,...,Am⊆[0,1] of respective measures α1,...,αm. We use this characterization to settle some of the conjectures in [S. Janson and V. Sós, More on quasi-random graphs, subgraph counts and graph limits, arXiv:1405.6808].
Let f:{−1,1}n→[−1,1] have degree d as a multilinear polynomial. It is well-known that the total influence of f is at most d. Aaronson and Ambainis asked whether the total L1 influence of f can also be bounded as a function of d. Bačkurs and Bavarian answered this question in the affirmative, providing a bound of O(d3) for general functions and O(d2) for homogeneous functions. We improve on their results by providing a bound of d2 for general functions and O(dlogd) for homogeneous functions. In addition, we prove a bound of d/(2π)+o(d) for monotone functions, and provide a matching example.
The densities of small linear structures (such as arithmetic progressions) in subsets of Abelian groups can be expressed as certain analytic averages involving linear forms. Higher-order Fourier analysis examines such averages by approximating the indicator function of a subset by a function of bounded number of polynomials. Then, to approximate the average, it suffices to know the joint distribution of the polynomials applied to the linear forms. We prove a near-equidistribution theorem that describes these distributions for the group Fpn when p is a fixed prime. This fundamental fact is equivalent to a strong near-orthogonality statement regarding the higher-order characters, and was previously known only under various extra assumptions about the linear forms. As an application of our near-equidistribution theorem, we settle a conjecture of Gowers and Wolf on the true complexity of systems of linear forms for the group Fpn.
Recently there has been much interest in Gowers uniformity norms from the perspective of theoretical computer science. This is mainly due to the fact that these norms provide a method for testing whether the maximum correlation of a function f:Fpn→Fp with polynomials of degree at most d≤p is non-negligible, while making only a constant number of queries to the function. This is an instance of {\em correlation testing}. In this framework, a fixed test is applied to a function, and the acceptance probability of the test is dependent on the correlation of the function from the property. This is an analog of {\em proximity oblivious testing}, a notion coined by Goldreich and Ron, in the high error regime. In this work, we study general properties which are affine invariant and which are correlation testable using a constant number of queries. We show that any such property (as long as the field size is not too small) can in fact be tested by Gowers uniformity tests, and hence having correlation with the property is equivalent to having correlation with degree d polynomials for some fixed d. We stress that our result holds also for non-linear properties which are affine invariant. This completely classifies affine invariant properties which are correlation testable. The proof is based on higher-order Fourier analysis. Another ingredient is a nontrivial extension of a graph theoretical theorem of Erdös, Lovász and Spencer to the context of additive number theory.
Let P be an affine invariant property of functions Fpn→[R] for fixed p and R. We show that if P is locally testable with a constant number of queries, then one can estimate the distance of a function f from P with a constant number of queries. This was previously unknown even for simple properties such as cubic polynomials over F2. Our test is simple: take a restriction of f to a constant dimensional affine subspace, and measure its distance from P. We show that by choosing the dimension large enough, this approximates with high probability the global distance of f from $\cP$. The analysis combines the approach of Fischer and Newman [SIAM J. Comp 2007] who established a similar result for graph properties, with recently developed tools in higher order Fourier analysis, in particular those developed in Bhattacharyya et al. [STOC 2013].
Let F = F_p for any fixed prime p >= 2. An affine-invariant property is a property of functions on F^n that is closed under taking affine transformations of the domain. We prove that all affine-invariant property having local characterizations are testable. In fact, we show a proximity-oblivious test for any such property P, meaning that there is a test that, given an input function f, makes a constant number of queries to f, always accepts if f satisfies P, and rejects with positive probability if the distance between f and P is nonzero. More generally, we show that any affine-invariant property that is closed under taking restrictions to subspaces and has bounded complexity is testable. We also prove that any property that can be described as the property of decomposing into a known structure of low-degree polynomials is locally characterized and is, hence, testable. For example, whether a function is a product of two degree-d polynomials, whether a function splits into a product of d linear polynomials, and whether a function has low rank are all examples of degree-structural properties and are therefore locally characterized. Our results depend on a new Gowers inverse theorem by Tao and Ziegler for low characteristic fields that decomposes any polynomial with large Gowers norm into a function of low-degree non-classical polynomials. We establish a new equidistribution result for high rank non-classical polynomials that drives the proofs of both the testability results and the local characterization of degree-structural properties.
We study the relation between the growth rate of a graph property and the entropy of the graph limits that arise from graphs with that property. In particular, for hereditary classes we obtain a new description of the colouring number, which by well-known results describes the rate of growth. We study also random graphs and their entropies. We show, for example, that if a hereditary property has a unique limiting graphon with maximal entropy, then a random graph with this property, selected uniformly at random from all such graphs with a given order, converges to this maximizing graphon as the order tends to infinity.
We study sequences of functions of the form F_p^n -> {0,1} for varying n, and define a notion of convergence based on the induced distributions from restricting the functions to a random affine subspace. Using a decomposition theorem and a recently proven equi-distribution theorem from higher order Fourier analysis, we prove that the limits of such convergent sequences can be represented by certain measurable functions. We are also able to show that every such limit object arises as the limit of some sequence of functions. These results are in the spirit of similar results which have been developed for limits of graph sequences. A more general, albeit substantially more sophisticated, limit object was recently constructed by Szegedy in [Sze10].
The colored neighborhood metric for sparse graphs was introduced by Bollobás and Riordan. The corresponding convergence notion refines a convergence notion introduced by Benjamini and Schramm. We prove that even in this refined sense, the limit of a convergent graph sequence (with uniformly bounded degree) can be represented by a graphing. We study various topics related to this convergence notion such as: Bernoulli graphings, factor of i.i.d. processes and hyperfiniteness.
The spectral norm of a Boolean function f:{0,1}n→{−1,1} is the sum of the absolute values of its Fourier coefficients. This quantity provides useful upper and lower bounds on the complexity of a function in areas such as learning theory, circuit complexity, and communication complexity. In this paper, we give a combinatorial characterization for the spectral norm of symmetric functions. We show that the logarithm of the spectral norm is of the same order of magnitude as r(f)log(n/r(f)) where r(f)=max{r0,r1}, and r0 and r1 are the smallest integers less than n/2 such that f(x) or f(x)⋅parity(x) is constant for all x with ∑xi∈[r0,n−r1]. We mention some applications to the decision tree and communication complexity of symmetric functions.
Every graphon defines a random graph on any given number n of vertices. It was known that the graphon is random-free if and only if the entropy of this random graph is subquadratic. We prove that for random-free graphons, this entropy can grow as fast as any subquadratic function. However, if the graphon belongs to the closure of a random-free graph property, then the entropy is O(nlogn). We also give a simple construction of a non-stepfunction random-free graphon for which this entropy is linear, refuting a conjecture of Janson.
We show that on every product probability space, Boolean functions with small total influences are essentially the ones that are almost measurable with respect to certain natural sub-sigma algebras. This theorem in particular describes the structure of monotone set properties that do not exhibit sharp thresholds. Our result generalizes the core of Friedgut's seminal work [Ehud Friedgut. Sharp thresholds of graph properties, and the k-sat problem. J. Amer. Math. Soc., 12(4):1017-1054, 1999.] on properties of random graphs to the setting of arbitrary Boolean functions on general product probability spaces, and improves the result of Bourgain in his appendix to Friedgut's paper.
Consider a subset A of Fpn and a decomposition of its indicator function as the sum of two bounded functions 1A=f1+f2. For every family of linear forms, we find the smallest degree of uniformity k such that assuming that ∥f2∥Uk is sufficiently small, it is possible to discard f2 and replace 1A with f1 in the average over this family of linear forms, affecting it only negligibly. Previously, Gowers and Wolf solved this problem for the case where f1 is a constant function. Furthermore, our main result solves Problem 7.6 in [W. T. Gowers and J. Wolf. Linear forms and higher-degree uniformity for functions on Fpn. Geom. Funct. Anal., 21(1):36--69, 2011] regarding the analytic averages that involve more than one subset of Fpn.] regarding the analytic averages that involve more than one subset of Fpn.
The blow-up of a graph is obtained by replacing every vertex with a finite collection of copies so that the copies of two vertices are adjacent if and only if the originals are. If every vertex is replaced with the same number of copies, then the resulting graph is called a balanced blow-up. We show that any graph which contains the maximum number of induced copies of a sufficiently large balanced blow-up of H is itself essentially a blow-up of H. This gives an asymptotic answer to a question in [BEHJ95].
The purpose of this article is to show that even the most elementary problems in asymptotic extremal graph theory can be highly non-trivial. We study linear inequalities between graph homomorphism densities. In the language of quantum graphs the validity of such an inequality is equivalent to the positivity of a corresponding quantum graph. Similar to the setting of polynomials, a quantum graph that can be represented as a sum of squares of labeled quantum graphs is necessarily positive. Lovász asks whether the opposite is also true. We answer this question and also a related question of Razborov in the negative by introducing explicit valid inequalities that do not satisfy the required conditions. Our solution to these problems is based on a reduction from real multivariate polynomials and uses the fact that there are positive polynomials that cannot be expressed as sums of squares of polynomials. It is known that the problem of determining whether a multivariate polynomial is positive is decidable. Hence it is very natural to ask "Is the problem of determining the validity of a linear inequality between homomorphism densities decidable?" We give a negative answer to this question which shows that such inequalities are inherently difficult in their full generality. Furthermore we deduce from this fact that the analogue of Artin's solution to Hilbert's seventeenth problem does not hold in the setting of quantum graphs.
For any finite unital commutative idempotent semigroup S, a unital semilattice, we show how to compute the amenability constant of its semigroup algebra l^1(S), which is always of the form 4n+1. We then show that these give lower bounds to amenability constants of certain Banach algebras graded over semilattices. We show that there is no commutative semilattice with amenability constant between 5 and 9.
