Spatiotemporal shaping of attosecond X-rays with time-dependent orbital angular momentum

Attosecond X-ray pulses are indispensable for exploring ultrafast phenomena in matter on Angstrom and attosecond scales. Here we propose a new method to realize spatiotemporal shaping of attosecond X-rays through temporal control of the orbital angular momentum mode content using an X-ray free-electron laser. The method exploits transverse-mode-dependent frequency pulling in a deliberately detuned second stage, together with slippage between the seed and the amplified radiation. Three-dimensional simulations show a double-spike waveform in which the two spikes carry different dominant topological charges. The spike separation is tunable and can reach several hundred attoseconds. This provides a source-level route to spatiotemporally structured attosecond X-rays with controllable temporal structure and topological mode content.

Design and Commissioning of A Beam Distribution System for Multiple Undulator Line Operation of the SXFEL-UF

As an important measure of improving the efficiency and usability of X-ray free electron laser facilities, simultaneous operation of multiple undulator lines realized by a beam distribution system has become a standard configuration in the recent built XFEL facilities. In Shanghai, SXFEL-UF, the first soft X-ray free electron laser user facility in China, has finished construction and started commissioning recently. Electron beam from linac is alternately distributed between the two parallel undulator beam lines by a beam distribution system with a 6° deflection line. The beam distribution system is designed to keep the beam properties like low emittance, high peak charge and small bunch length from being spoiled. Beam collective effects such as the dispersion, coherent synchrotron radiation and micro-bunching instability should be well suppressed to guarantee the beam quality. In this work, the detailed physics design of the beam distribution system is described and the recent commissioning result is reported.

High-repetition-rate seeded free-electron laser enhanced by self-modulation

Recently, the self-modulation scheme of a weakly pre-bunched electron beam has been proposed [Yan et al., Physical Review Letters 126, 084801 (2021)], which is of great promise for high-repetition-rate seeded free-electron lasers (FELs), such as high-gain harmonic generation (HGHG). In this paper, the self-modulation scheme is systematically analyzed and optimized, and further experiments in which the self-modulator is resonant at the second harmonic of the seed laser are conducted. The three-dimensional numerical simulations show that the required seed laser intensity in the self-modulation scheme is around three orders of magnitude lower than that of the standard HGHG through the optimization of the beam size or the peak current. More importantly, by reasonably setting the initial energy modulation and the resonance of the self-modulator, a more prominent bunching factor and lase at the 30th harmonic of the seed laser can be achieved in a single-stage HGHG. Moreover, the experiment results confirm that varying the resonance conditions of the self-modulator can still amplify the laser-induced energy modulation, where coherent radiation generated even at the 12th harmonic can be observed. These results indicate that the self-modulation scheme can remarkably reduce the requirements of the seed laser system while improving the harmonic up-conversion efficiency, which paves the way for realizing high-repetition-rate and fully coherent soft x-ray FELs.

Optimization and stability analysis of the cascaded EEHG-HGHG free-electron laser

X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) are powerful tools to explore and study nature for achieving remarkable advances. Generally, seeded FELs are ideal sources for supplying full coherent soft x-ray pulses. Benefiting from the high-frequency up-conversion efficiency, the cascading configuration with echo-enabled harmonic generation (EEHG) and high-gain harmonic generation (HGHG) holds promising prospects for generating full coherent radiation at 1 nm wavelength. In this paper, we design and optimize EEHG-HGHG configuration using parameters of Shanghai High-Repetition-Rate XFEL and Extreme Light Facility. In addition, we systematically analyze the effect of relative timing jitter on the output FEL performance based on various start-to-end electron beams. The intensive numerical simulations show that the cascaded EEHG-HGHG scheme can achieve 1 nm FEL pulses with peak power up to 15 GW. Further sensitivity analysis indicates that the relative timing jitter between the electron beam and seed laser has a significant impact on the FEL performance. The RMS timing jitter of 3 fs can lead to the final output pulse energy fluctuations of 29.16%.

Inhibition of Current-spike Formation Based on Longitudinal Phase Space Manipulation for High-Repetition-Rate X-ray FEL

The formation of a double-horn current profile is a challenging issue in the achievement of electron bunch with high peak current, especially for high-repetition-rate X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) where more nonlinear and intricate beam dynamics propagation is involved. Here, we propose to correct the nonlinear beam longitudinal phase space distortion in the photoinjector section with a dual-mode buncher. In combination with the evolutionary many-objective beam dynamics optimization, this method is shown to be effective in manipulating the longitudinal phase space at the injector exit. Furthermore, the formation of the current spike is avoided after the multi-stage charge density modulation and electron bunch with a peak current of 1.6 kA is achieved for 100-pC bunch charge.Start-to-end simulations based on the Shanghai high-repetition-rate XFEL and extreme light facility demonstrate that the proposed scheme can increase the FEL pulse energy by more than 3 times in a cascading operation of echo-enabled harmonic generation and high-gain harmonic generation. Moreover, this method can also be used for longitudinal phase space shaping of electron beams operating at a high repetition rate to meet the specific demands of different researches.

Self-Amplification of Coherent Energy Modulation in Seeded Free-Electron Lasers

The spectroscopic techniques for time-resolved fine analysis of matter require coherent X-ray radiation with femtosecond duration and high average brightness. Seeded free-electron lasers (FELs), which use the frequency up-conversion of an external seed laser to improve temporal coherence, are ideal for providing fully coherent soft X-ray pulses. However, it is difficult to operate seeded FELs at a high repetition rate due to the limitations of present state-of-the-art laser systems. Here, we report the novel self-modulation method for enhancing laser-induced energy modulation, thereby significantly reducing the requirement of an external laser system. Driven by this scheme, we experimentally realize high harmonic generation in a seeded FEL using an unprecedentedly small energy modulation. An electron beam with a laser-induced energy modulation as small as 1.8 times the slice energy spread is used for lasing at the 7th harmonic of a 266-nm seed laser in a single-stage high-gain harmonic generation (HGHG) setup and the 30th harmonic of the seed laser in a two-stage HGHG setup. The results mark a major step towards a high-repetition-rate, fully coherent X-ray FEL.

Generating X-rays with orbital angular momentum in free-electron laser oscillator

The generation of light beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) from a free-electron laser at short wavelengths has attracted considerable attention as a key resource in several fields and applications. Herein, we present a facile method to generate intense and coherent OAM beams from an X-ray free-electron laser oscillator (XFELO). We use the Bragg crystal as both a reflector as well as mode selector, in both longitudinal and transverse modes, which enables the specified resonance deviation that maximizes the single-pass gain of the high-order OAM mode of interest. This can allow the amplification and saturation of OAM beams in a typical XFELO configuration. Our results show that 150~$μ$J fully coherent, hard-X-ray pulses carrying first-order OAM can be generated without utilizing any external elements such as optical mode converters or elliptically polarized undulators. This simple and straightforward method can pave the way for the further customization of the transverse-mode operation of X-ray free-electron laser oscillators.

Polarization control of an X-ray free electron laser oscillator

High-intensity, fully coherent X-ray radiation with a tunable polarization over a wide spectral range is of great importance to many experiments. In this paper, we propose a tapered crossed-polarized undulator configuration for X-ray free electron laser oscillator (XFELO) to produce arbitrarily polarized X-ray pulses in hard X-ray region. A numerical example utilizing the parameters of the Shanghai High-Repetition-Rate XFEL and Extreme Light Facility (SHINE) is presented to demonstrate the generation of polarization controllable, fully coherent Hard X-ray pulses with 99.9% polarization degree and 20 KHz polarization switching rate. This scheme also holds the possibility to be used in cavity tunable XFELO.

A Simplified Model for Fast Optimization of Free-Electron Laser Oscillator

A simplified theoretical model for free-electron laser oscillator (FELO) simulation which reserves the main physics is proposed. In stead of using traditional macro particles sampling method, the theoretical model takes advantages of low gain theory to calculate the optical power single-pass gain in the undulator analytically, and some reasonable approximations are made to simplify the calculation of power growth in the cavity. The theoretical analysis of single-pass gain, power growth, time-dependent laser profile evolution and cavity desynchronism are accomplished more efficiently. We present the results of infrared wavelength FELO and X-ray FELO with the new model. The results is checked by simulation with GENESIS and OPC which demonstrates the validity of the theoretical model.

Chromatic Effect for THz Generation in a Novel Wave-front Tilt Scheme

Deriving single or few cycle terahertz pulse (THz) by intense femtosecond laser through cascaded optical rectification in electro-optic crystals is a crucial technique in cutting-edge time-resolved spectroscopy to characterize micro-scale structures and ultrafast dynamics. In the past decade, lithium niobate (LN) crystal implementation of wave-front tilt scheme has been prevalently used, while painstaking efforts have been invested in order to achieve higher THz conversion efficiency. In this research we developed a brand new type of LN crystal possessing dual-face-cut and Brewster coupling, and conducted experimental and simulative investigation systematically to optimize the multi-dimensionally entangled parameters in THz generation, predicting the extreme conversion efficiency of 10% is potentially promising at the THz absorption coefficient of 0.5cm-1. More remarkably, we first discovered that the chirp of the driving laser pulse plays a decisive role in the wave-front tilt scheme, and the THz generation efficiency could be enhanced tremendously by applying an appropriate chirp.

In this paper, we present the beam dynamics aspects of the deflecting cavity of SXFEL user facility, which is located at the exit of the undulator. With a targeted time resolution around 10 fs, it is expected to be an important tool for time-resolved commissioning and machine studies for SXFEL user facility.

Fully coherent hard X-ray generation by two-stage of Phase-merging Enhanced Harmonic Generation

Cascading stages of seeded free electron laser (FEL) is a promising way to produce fully coherent X-ray radiations. We study a new approach to produce coherent hard X-rays by cascading the recently proposed phase-merging enhanced harmonic generation (PEHG). The scheme consists of one dogleg and two PEHG configurations, which may be one of the leading candidates for the extracted undulator branch in future X-ray FEL facilities. FEL physics studies show that such a scheme is feasible within the present technology and can provide high brightness X-ray radiation pulses with narrow bandwidth and fully coherence, and the radiated peak power at 1 angstrom wavelength converted from an initial 200 nm seed laser is over 2 GW.

Generating coherent soft x-ray pulses in the water window with a high-brightness seeded free-electron laser

We propose a new scheme to generate high-brightness and temporal coherent soft x-ray radiation in a seeded free-electron laser. The proposed scheme is based the coherent harmonic generation (CHG) and superradiant principles. A CHG scheme is first used to generate coherent signal at ultra-high harmonics of the seed. This coherent signal is then amplified by a series of chicane-undulator modules via the fresh bunch and superradiant processes in the following radiator. Using a representative of realistic set of parameters, three-dimensional simulations have been carried out and the simulations results demonstrated that 10 GW-level ultra-short coherent radiation pulses in the water window can be achieved by using the proposed technique.

Wakefields studies for the SXFEL user facility

Besides the original seeded undulator line, in the Soft X-ray free-electron laser (SXFEL) user facility at Shanghai, a second undulator line based on self-amplified spontaneous emission is proposed to achieve 2 nm laser pulse with extremely high brightness. In this paper, the beam energy deviation induced by the undulator wakefields is numerically obtained, and it is verified to have a good agreement between 3D and 2D simulation results. The beam energy loss along the undulator degrades the expected FEL output performance. Impact of wakefields on pulse energy, radiation power and spectrum is discussed, as well as the benefits of compensation obtained with a taper in the undulator field. And using the planned SXFEL diagnostic, a longitudinal wakefields measurement experiment is proposed and simulated.

Demonstration of nonlinear-energy-spread compensation in relativistic electron bunches with corrugated structures

High quality electron beams with flat distributions in both energy and current are critical for many accelerator-based scientific facilities such as free-electron lasers and MeV ultrafast electron diffraction and microscopes. In this Letter we report on using corrugated structures to compensate for the beam nonlinear energy chirp imprinted by the curvature of the radio-frequency field, leading to a significant reduction in beam energy spread. By using a pair of corrugated structures with orthogonal orientations, we show that the quadrupole wake fields which otherwise increase beam emittance can be effectively canceled. This work also extends the applications of corrugated structures to the low beam charge (a few pC) and low beam energy (a few MeV) regime and may have a strong impact in many accelerator-based facilities.

Numerical Modeling on Thermal Loading of Diamond Crystal in X-ray FEL Oscillator

Due to high reflectivity and high resolution of X-ray pulses, diamond is one of the most popular Bragg crystals serving as the reflecting mirror and mono$-$chromator in the next generation of free electrons lasers (FELs). The energy deposition of X-rays will result in thermal heating, and thus lattice expansion of the diamond crystal, which may degrade the performance of X-ray FELs. In this paper, the thermal loading effect of diamond crystal for X-ray FEL oscillators has been systematically studied by combined simulation with Geant4 and ANSYS, and its dependence on the environmental temperature, crystal size, X-ray pulse repetition rate and pulse energy are presented. Our results show that taking the thermal loading effects into account, X-ray FEL oscillators are still robust and promising with an optimized design.

Time-resolved electron beam diagnostics with sub-femtosecond resolution

In modern high-gain free-electron lasers, ultra-fast photon pulses designed for studying chemical, atomic and biological systems are generated from a serial of behaviors of high-brightness electron beam at the time-scale ranging from several hundred femtoseconds to sub-femtosecond. Currently, radiofrequency transverse deflectors are widely used to provide reliable, single-shot electron beam phase space diagnostics, with a temporal resolution of femtosecond. Here, we show that the time resolution limitations caused by the intrinsic beam size in transverse deflectors, can be compensated with specific transverse-to-longitudinal coupling elements. For the purpose, an undulator with transverse gradient field is introduced before the transverse deflector. With this technique, a resolution of less than 1fs root mean square has been theoretically demonstrated for measuring the longitudinal profile and/or the micro-bunching of the electron bunch.

Wakefield issue and its impact on X-ray photon pulse in the SXFEL test facility

Besides the designed beam acceleration, the energy of electrons changed by the longitudinal wakefields in a real free-electron laser (FEL) facility, which may degrade FEL performances from the theoretical expectation. In this paper, with the help of simulation codes, the wakefields induced beam energy loss in the sophisticated undulator section is calculated for Shanghai soft X-ray FEL, which is a two-stage seeded FEL test facility. While the 1st stage 44 nm FEL output is almost not affected by the wakefields, it is found that a beam energy loss about 0.8 MeV degrades the peak brightness of the 2nd stage 8.8 nm FEL by a factor of 1.6, which however can be compensated by a magnetic field fine tuning of each undulator segment.

Beam energy distribution influences on density modulation efficiency in seeded free-electron lasers

The beam energy spread at the entrance of undulator system is of paramount importance for efficient density modulation in high-gain seeded free-electron lasers (FELs). In this paper, the dependences of high harmonic micro-bunching in the high-gain harmonic generation (HGHG), echo-enabled harmonic generation (EEHG) and phase-merging enhanced harmonic generation (PEHG) schemes on the electron energy spread distribution are studied. Theoretical investigations and multi-dimensional numerical simulations are applied to the cases of uniform and saddle beam energy distributions and compared to a traditional Gaussian distribution. It shows that the uniform and saddle electron energy distributions significantly enhance the performance of HGHG-FELs, while they almost have no influence on EEHG and PEHG schemes. A numerical example demonstrates that, with about 84keV RMS uniform and/or saddle slice energy spread, the 30th harmonic radiation can be directly generated by a single-stage seeding scheme for a soft x-ray FEL facility.

Compensating the electron beam energy spread by the natural transverse gradient of laser undulator in all-optical x-ray light sources

All-optical ideas provide a potential to dramatically cut off the size and cost of x-ray light sources to the university-laboratory scale, with the combination of the laser-plasma accelerator and the laser undulator. However, the large longitudinal energy spread of the electron beam from laser-plasma accelerator may hinder the way to high brightness of these all-optical light sources. In this paper, the beam energy spread effect is proposed to be significantly compensated by the natural transverse gradient of a laser undulator when properly transverse-dispersing the electron beam. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulations on conventional laser-Compton scattering sources and high-gain all-optical x-ray free-electron lasers with the electron beams from laser-plasma accelerators are presented.

Experimental demonstration of longitudinal beam phase space linearizer in a free-electron laser facility by corrugated structures

Removal of residual linear energy chirp and intrinsic nonlinear energy curvature in the relativistic electron beam from radiofrequency linear accelerator is of paramount importance for efficient lasing of a high-gain free-electron laser. Recently, it was theoretically and experimentally demonstrated that the longitudinal wakefield excited by the electrons itself in the corrugated structure allows for precise control of the electron beam phase space. In this Letter, we report the first utilization of a corrugated structure as beam linearizer in the operation of a seeded free-electron laser driven by a 140 MeV linear accelerator, where a gain of ~10,000 over spontaneous emission was achieved at the second harmonic of the 1047 nm seed laser, and a free-electron laser bandwidth narrowing by about 50% was observed, in good agreement with the theoretical expectations.

In this paper, a division-of-amplitude photopolarimeter (DOAP) for measuring the polarization state of free-electron laser (FEL) pulse is described. The incident FEL beam is divided into four separate beams, and four Stokes parameters can be measured in a single-shot. Coherent photon beam based diagnostics for a seeded extreme ultraviolet free-electron laser

Independently from electron beam based procedures, photon beam based diagnostics is an alternative way for alignment and commissioning of the numerous undulator cells in a high-gain short-wavelength free-electron laser (FEL). In this paper, using the seed laser modulated electron beam and the undulator fine tuning technique, a coherent photon beam based diagnostic was proposed for seeded FEL, and some preliminary experimental results at Shanghai deep ultraviolet FEL test facility were presented. Proposal for High-harmonic EEHG Lasing at Shanghai Deep Ultra-Violet Free-electron Laser

The echo-enabled harmonic generation (EEHG) free-electron laser (FEL) has been already demonstrated at lower harmonics and the first lasing at third harmonic also has been achieved at Shanghai deep ultra-violet FEL (SDUV-FEL). While the great advantage of much higher harmonic up-conversion efficiency of EEHG over other seeded FELs only shows evidently at much higher harmonics. In this paper, we investigate the possibility of EEHG lasing at 10-th harmonic of the seed laser at SDUV-FEL, both physical designs and numerical simulations have been studied carefully. Two proposals of EEHG at 10-th harmonic have been studied respectively, i.e. with the seed lasers of the same color and two difference colors, the simulation results indicate that both approaches could be the candidate for EEHG lasing at 10-th harmonic at SDUV-FEL, meanwhile the coherent synchrotron radiation does not affect the performance of EEHG-FEL but only slightly shifts the central radiation frequency.

Slippage effect on laser phase error amplification in seeded harmonic generation free-electron lasers

Free-electron lasers (FELs) seeded with external lasers hold great promise for generating high power radiation with nearly transform-limited bandwidth in soft x-ray region. However, it has been pointed out that the initial seed laser noise will be amplified by the frequency up-conversion process, which may degrade the quality of the output radiation produced by a harmonic generation scheme. In this paper, theoretical and simulation studies for laser phase error amplification in seeded FEL schemes with slippage effect taken into account are presented. It is found that, the seed laser imperfection experienced by the electron beam can be significantly smoothed by the slippage effect in the modulator when the slippage length is comparable to the laser pulse length. This smoothing effect allows one to preserve the excellent temporal coherence of seeded FELs in presence of large laser phase errors. For ultra-short UV seed lasers with FWHM around 16 fs, the slippage length in a modulator with ~30 undulator periods is typically comparable to the laser width; for longer seed laser pulses with FWHM around 80 fs, the slippage length can be made comparable to the laser width using a modulator tuned at the sub-harmonic of the UV seed laser. Three-dimensional simulations have been carried out for a soft x-ray facility using seed laser pulses with large frequency chirp and the results show that the sensitivity of the bandwidth of the seeded FEL to the initial frequency chirp can be significantly reduced by a proper design of the modulator such that the slippage length is comparable to the laser width. Our studies show that the tolerance on laser phase error for generating nearly transform-limited soft x-ray pulses in seeded FELs is much looser than previously thought and fully coherent radiation at nanometer wavelength may be reached with current technologies.

Proposal for an X-Ray Free Electron Laser Oscillator with Intermediate Energy Electron Beam

Harmonic lasing of low-gain free electron laser oscillators has been experimentally demonstrated in the terahertz and infrared regions. In this paper, the possibility of EEHG operation of FLASH II is investigated for the first time. In addition, several interesting issues concerning EEHG simulation are discussed.
