The underestimation of high pressure in DFT+$U$ simulation for the wide range cold-pressure of lanthanide metals

Density functional theory plus $U$ (DFT+$U$) is one of the most efficient first-principles methods to simulate the cold pressure properties of strongly-correlated materials. However, the applicability of DFT+$U$ at ultra-high pressure is not sufficiently studied, especially in the widely-used augmented schemes [such as projector augmented wave (PAW) and linearized augmented plane wave (LAPW)]. This work has systematically investigated the performance of DFT+$U$ in PAW and LAPW at the pressure up to several hundred GPa for the lanthanide metals, which is a typical strongly-correlated series. We found DFT+$U$ simulation in PAW exhibits an unphysical underestimating of force at high pressure. By delicate analysis and comparison with local-orbital-independent hybrid functional results, we have demonstrated that this unphysical behavior is related to a normalization problem on the local density matrix caused by the overlap of local orbitals in PAW under high pressure. Additionally, we observed a slight softening of force in DFT+$U$ in heavy lanthanides (Tm, Yb and Lu) at high pressure comparing with the DFT results without the influence of local orbital overlap, and it might be related to the enhancement of bonding effect in correlation correction methods at high pressure. Our work reveals the underestimating of high pressure in DFT+$U$ simulation, analyses two sources of this unusual behavior and proposes their mechanism. Most importantly, our investigation highlights the breakdown of DFT+$U$ for high pressure simulation in VASP package based on PAW framework.

The Thermodynamical Instability Induced by Pressure Ionization in Fluid Helium

A systematic study of pressure ionization is carried out in the chemical picture by the example of fluid helium. By comparing the variants of the chemical model, it is demonstrated that the behavior of pressure ionization depends on the construction of the free energy function. In the chemical model with the Coulomb free energy described by the Padé interpolation formula, thermodynamical instability induced by pressure ionization is found to be manifested by a discontinuous drop or a continuous fall and rise along the pressure-density curve as well as the pressure-temperature curve, which is very much like the first order liquid-liquid phase transition of fluid hydrogen from the first principles simulations. In contrast, in the variant chemical model with the Coulomb free energy term empirically weakened, no thermodynamical instability is induced when pressure ionization occurs, and the resulting equation of state achieves good agreement with the first principles simulations of fluid helium.

Thermodynamics of the $α$-$γ$ transition in cerium studied by an LDA + Gutzwiller method

The $α$-$γ$ transition in cerium has been studied in both zero and finite temperature by Gutzwiller density functional theory. We find that the first order transition between $α$ and $γ$ phases persists to the zero temperature with negative pressure. By further including the entropy contributed by both electronic quasi-particles and lattice vibration, we obtain the total free energy at given volume and temperature, from which we obtain the $α$-$γ$ transition from the first principle calculation. We also computed the phase diagram and pressure versus volume isotherms of cerium at finite temperature and pressure, finding excellent agreement with the experiments. Our calculation indicate that both the electronic entropy and lattice vibration entropy plays important role in the $α$-$γ$ transition.

Long-term temporal dependence of droplets transiting through a fixed spatial point in gas-liquid twophase turbulent jets

We perform rescaled range analysis upon the signals measured by Dual Particle Dynamical Analyzer in gas-liquid two-phase turbulent jets. A novel rescaled range analysis is proposed to investigate these unevenly sampled signals. The Hurst exponents of velocity and other passive scalars in the bulk of spray are obtained to be 0.59$\pm $0.02 and the fractal dimension is hence 1.41$\pm $ 0.02, which are in remarkable agreement with and much more precise than previous results. These scaling exponents are found to be independent of the configuration and dimensions of the nozzle and the fluid flows. Therefore, such type of systems form a universality class with invariant scaling properties.
