Chiral magnetic response to arbitrary axial imbalance

The response of chiral fermions to time and space dependent axial imbalance & constant magnetic field is analyzed. The axialvector-vector-vector (AVV) three-point function is studied using a real-time approach at finite temperature in the weak external field approximation. The chiral magnetic conductivity is given analytically for noninteracting fermions. It is pointed out that local charge conservation plays an important role when the axial imbalance is inhomogeneous. Proper regularization is needed which makes the constant axial imbalance limit delicate: for static but spatially oscillating chiral charge the current of the chiral magnetic effect (CME) vanishes. In the homogeneous (but possible time-dependent) limit of the axial imbalance the CME current is determined solely by the chiral anomaly. As a phenomenological consequence, the observability of the charge asymmetry caused by the CME turns out to be a matter of interplay between various scales of the system. Possible plasma instabilities resulting from the gradient corrections to the CME current are also pointed out.

The noncommutativity of the static and homogeneous limit of the axial chemical potential in chiral magnetic effect

We study the noncommutativity of different orders of zero energy-momentum limit pertaining to the axial chemical potential in the chiral magnetic effect. While this noncommutativity issue originates from the pinching singularity at one-loop order, it cannot be removed by introducing a damping term to the fermion propagators. The physical reason is that modifying the propagator alone would violate the axial-vector Ward identity and as a result a modification of the longitudinal component of the axial-vector vertex is required, which contributes to CME. The pinching singularity with free fermion propagators was then taken over by the singularity stemming from the dressed axial-vector vertex. We show this mechanism by a concrete example. Moreover, we proved in general the vanishing CME in the limit order that the static limit was taken prior to the homogeneous limit in the light of Coleman-Hill theorem for a static external magnetic field. For the opposite limit that the homogeneous limit is taken first, we show that the nonvanishing CME was a consequence of the nonrenormalizability of chiral anomaly for an arbitrary external magnetic field.

Non-static Analysis of the Anomalous Chiral Conductivities

Given the intrinsic nonequilibrium nature of high-energy collisions the investigation of the dynamical properties of transport phenomena is important. The study of the real-time behavior of various conductivities and susceptibilities help refine the simulation tools we use to compare the theories and the experimental findings. In this contribution we take steps to give the chiral magnetic conductivity in case of magnetic field and chiral imbalance are both space-time dependent. Using linear response approximation we present the general 1-loop resummed expression for the electric current. We also suggest simple limiting cases in hope for possible implementation into a hydrodynamical framework.

Bose-Einstein Condensation of Bound Pairs of Relativistic Fermions in a Magnetic Field

The Bose-Einstein condensation of bound pairs made of equally and oppositely charged fermions in a magnetic field is investigated using a relativistic model. The Gaussian fluctuations have been taken into account in order to study the spectrum of bound pairs in the strong coupling region. We found, in weak coupling reagion, the condensation temperature increases with an increasing magnetic field displaying the magnetic catalysis effect. In strong coupling region, the inverse magnetic catalysis appears when the magnetic field is low and is replaced by the usual magnetic catalysis effect when magnetic field is sufficiently high, in contrast to the nonrelativistic case where the inverse magnetic catalysis prevails in strong coupling region regardless of the strength of the magnetic field. The resulting response to the magnetic field is the consequence of the competition between the dimensional reduction by Landau orbitals in pairing dynamics and the anisotropy of the kinetic spectrum of the bound pairs. We thus conclude that dimensional reduction dominates in weak domain and strong coupling one except the small magnetic field region, where the enhanced fluctuations dominates.

(Inverse) Magnetic Catalysis in Bose-Einstein Condensation of Neutral Bound Pairs

The Bose-Einstein condensation of bound pairs made of oppositely charged fermions in a magnetic field is investigated. We find that the condensation temperature shows the magnetic catalysis effect in weak coupling and the inverse magnetic catalysis effect in strong coupling. The different responses to the magnetic field can be attributed to the competition between the dimensional reduction by Landau orbitals in pairing dynamics and the anisotropy of the kinetic spectrum of fluctuations (bound pairs in the normal phase)

Some Comments on the Holographic Heavy Quark Potential in a Thermal Bath

The heavy quark potential of a thermal Yang-Mills theory in strong coupling limit is explored in terms of the holographic principle. With a fairly general AdS/QCD metric the heavy quark potential displays a kink-like screening in the plasma phase. This behavior may conflict the causality of a field theory that is mathematically equivalent to the thermal Yang-Mills.

The finite 't Hooft coupling correction on the jet quenching parameter in a $\mathcal N=4$ Super Yang-Mills Plasma

We derive the quadratic action of the fluctuations around the classical world sheet underlying the jet quenching from AdS/CFT. After obtaining the correspondence partition function, the expansion of the jet quenching parameter of $\mathcal N=4$ super symmetric Yang-Mills theory is carried out to the sub-leading term in the large 't Hooft coupling $λ$ at a nonzero temperature. The strong coupling corresponds to the semi-classical expansion of the string-sigma model, the gravity dual of the Wilson loop operator, with the sub-leading term expressed in terms of functional determinants of fluctuations. The contribution of these determinants are evaluated numerically. We find the jet quenching parameter is reduced due to world sheet fluctuations by a factor $(1-1.97λ^{-1/2}) $

Mass Effect in Single Flavor Color Superconductivity

The nonzero strange quark mass effect in different types of single flavor color superconductivity and the phase diagram in a magnetic field are studied. We have obtained simple analytical forms of the quasi-particle energies for an arbitrary mass and explored the mass correction to the pressure and the transition temperature. It is found that the mass reduces the pressure and transition temperature of strange quarks, but it doesn't change the ranking $P_n<P_{\rm A}<P_{\rm polar}<P_{\rm planar}<P_{\rm CSL}$ of the pressure for the four canonical single flavor phases. The phase diagram with magnetic field and temperature for a system of three flavors is obtained for two different values of the strange quark mass. The changes from the one obtained previously under the approximation of massless strange quarks are examined.

Some Field Theoretic Issues Regarding the Chiral Magnetic Effect

In this paper, we shall address some field theoretic issues regarding the chiral magnetic effect. The general structure of the magnetic current consistent with the electromagnetic gauge invariance is obtained and the impact of the infrared divergence is examined. Some subtleties on the relation between the chiral magnetic effect and the axial anomaly are clarified through a careful examination of the infrared limit of the relevant thermal diagrams.

The Subleading Term of the Strong Coupling Expansion of the Heavy-Quark Potential in a $\mathcal N=4$ Super Yang-Mills Plasma

Applying the AdS/CFT correspondence, the expansion of the heavy-quark potential of the ${\cal N}$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory at large $N_c$ is carried out to the sub-leading term in the large 't Hooft coupling at nonzero temperatures. The strong coupling corresponds to the semi-classical expansion of the string-sigma model, the gravity dual of the Wilson loop operator, with the sub-leading term expressed in terms of functional determinants of fluctuations. The contributions of these determinants are evaluated numerically.

The momentum analyticity of two-point correlators from perturbation theory and AdS/CFT

The momentum plane analyticity of two point function of a relativistic thermal field theory at zero chemical potential is explored. A general principle regarding the location of the singularities is extracted. In the case of the N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory at large $N_c$, a qualitative change in the nature of the singularity (branch points versus simple poles) from the weak coupling regime to the strong coupling regime is observed with the aid of the AdS/CFT correspondence.

Applying the AdS/CFT correspondence, the expansion of the heavy-quark potential of the ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory at large $N_c$ is carried out to the sub-leading term in the large 't Hooft coupling at zero temperature. The strong coupling corresponds to the semi-classical expansion of the string-sigma model, the gravity dual of the Wilson loop operator, with the sub-leading term expressed in terms of functional determinants of fluctuations. The singularities of these determinants are examined and their contributions are evaluated numerically.

The Single Flavor Color Superconductivity in a Magnetic Field

We investigate the single flavor color superconductivity in a magnetic field. Because of the absence of the electromagnetic Meissner effect, forming a nonspherical CSC phase, polar, A or planar, does not cost energy of excluding magnetic flux. We found that these nonspherical phases do occupy a significant portion of the phase diagram with respect to magnetic field and temperature and may be implemented under the typical quark density and the magnetic field inside a compact star.

Angular Momentum Mixing in Single Flavor Color Superconductivity with Transverse Pairing

Because of the equal strength of the pairing potential mediated by one-gluon exchange for all partial waves to the leading order QCD running coupling constant and the nonlinearity of the gap equation, the non-spherical pairing in single flavor color superconductivity(CSC) can not be restricted in a single non-s-wave channel and the mixing among different angular momenta will occur. In this paper, we examine the angular momentum mixing in single flavor CSC with transverse pairing, in which the pairing quarks have opposite helicity. We find that the free energy of all non-spherical pairing states are lowered by angular momentum mixing compared with that contain p-wave only. But the amount of the free energy drop is numerically small. Consequently the most stable pairing state that respect the time reversal invariance remains the spherical CSL.

A Possible Mechanism for the Low Shear Viscosity in the QGP Created by RHIC

We study the Anderson Localization effect on the shear viscosity in a system with random medium by Kubo formula. We show that this effect can reduce the shear viscosity nonperturbatively. Then we discuss its possible implementation in heavy-ion collisions, where the created heavy bound states or other collective modes may play the role of the random scatterer underlying Anderson Localization effect.

Linearized Gravity in the Karch-Randall Braneworld

We present a linearized gravity investigation of the bent braneworld, where an AdS_4 brane is embedded in AdS_5. While we focus on static spherically symmetric mass distributions on the brane, much of the analysis continues to hold for more general configurations. In addition to the identification of the massive Karch-Randall graviton and a tower of Kaluza-Klein gravitons, we find a radion mode that couples to the trace of the energy-momentum tensor on the brane. The Karch-Randall radion arises as a property of the embedding of the brane in the bulk space, even in the context of a single brane model.

Linearized Analysis of the Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati Brane Model

We solve the Einstein equations in the Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati model with a static, spherically symmetric matter distribution on the physical brane and obtain an exact expression for the gravitational field outside the source to the first order in the gravitational coupling. Although when confined on the physical brane this expression reproduces the correct 4D Newtonian potential for distances r_s << r << λ, where λ is a characteristic length scale of the model, it does not coincide with the standard linearized form of the 4D Schwarzschild metric. The solution reproduces the 5D Schwarzschild metric in the linearized approximation for r >> λ.
