Static Black Holes in Higher Dimensional Einstein-Skyrme Models

In this paper we construct a class of hairy static black holes of higher dimensional Einstein-Skyrme theories with the cosmological constant $Λ\le 0$ whose scalar is an $SU(2)$ valued field. The spacetime is set to be conformal to $ \mathcal{M}^4 \times \mathcal{N}^{N-4}$ where $\mathcal{M}^4$ and $\mathcal{N}^{N-4}$ are a four dimensional spacetime and a compact Einstein $(N-4)$-dimensional submanifold for $N \ge 5$, respectively, whereas $N=4$ is the trivial case. We discuss the behavior of solutions near the boundaries, namely, near the (event) horizon and in the asymptotic region. Then, we establish local-global existence of black hole solutions and show that black holes with finite energy exist if their geometries are asymptotically Ricci-flat. At the end, we perform a linear stability analysis using perturbative method and give a remark about their stability.

Embedded solitons in second-harmonic-generating lattices

Embedded solitons are exceptional modes in nonlinear-wave systems with the propagation constant falling in the system's propagation band. An especially challenging topic is seeking for such modes in nonlinear dynamical lattices (discrete systems). We address this problem for a system of coupled discrete equations modeling the light propagation in an array of tunnel-coupled waveguides with a combination of intrinsic quadratic (second-harmonic-generating) and cubic nonlinearities. Solutions for discrete embedded solitons (DESs) are constructed by means of two analytical approximations, adjusted, severally, for broad and narrow DESs, and in a systematic form with the help of numerical calculations. DESs of several types, including ones with identical and opposite signs of their fundamental-frequency and second-harmonic components, are produced. In the most relevant case of narrow DESs, the analytical approximation produces very accurate results, in comparison with the numerical findings. In this case, the DES branch extends from the propagation band into a semi-infinite gap as a family of regular discrete solitons. The study of stability of DESs demonstrates that, in addition to ones featuring the well-known property of semi-stability, there are linearly stable DESs which are genuinely robust modes.

Dynamics of laterally-coupled pairs of spin-VCSELs

A newly-developed normal mode model of laser dynamics in a generalised array of waveguides is applied to extend the spin-flip model (SFM) to pairs of evanescently-coupled spin-VCSELS. The effect of high birefringence is explored, revealing new dynamics and regions of bistability. It is shown that optical switching of the polarisation states of the lasers may be controlled through the optical pump and that, under certain conditions, the polarisation of one laser may be switched by controlling the intensity and polarisation in the other.

Theory and Numerical Modelling of Parity-Time Symmetric Structures in Photonics: Introduction and Grating Structures in One Dimension

A class of structures based on PT PT-symmetric Bragg gratings in the presence of both gain and loss is studied. The basic concepts and properties of parity and time reversal in one-dimensional structures that possess idealised material properties are given. The impact of realistic material properties on the behaviour of these devices is then investigated. Further extension to include material non-linearity is used to study an innovative all-optical memory device.

Bright solitons in a PT-symmetric chain of dimers

We study the existence and stability of fundamental bright discrete solitons in a parity-time (PT)-symmetric coupler composed by a chain of dimers, that is modelled by linearly coupled discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equations with gain and loss terms. We use a perturbation theory for small coupling between the lattices to perform the analysis, which is then confirmed by numerical calculations. Such analysis is based on the concept of the so-called anti-continuum limit approach. We consider the fundamental onsite and intersite bright solitons. Each solution has symmetric and antisymmetric configurations between the arms. The stability of the solutions is then determined by solving the corresponding eigenvalue problem. We obtain that both symmetric and antisymmetric onsite mode can be stable for small coupling, on the contrary of the reported continuum limit where the antisymmetric solutions are always unstable. The instability is either due to the internal modes crossing the origin or the appearance of a quartet of complex eigenvalues. In general, the gain-loss term can be considered parasitic as it reduces the stability region of the onsite solitons. Additionally, we analyse the dynamic behaviour of the onsite and intersite solitons when unstable, where typically it is either in the form of travelling solitons or soliton blow-ups.

Impact of Dispersive and Saturable Gain/Loss on Bistability of Nonlinear Parity-Time Bragg Gratings

We report on the impact of realistic gain and loss models on the bistable operation of nonlinear parity-time Bragg gratings. In our model we include both dispersive and saturable gain and show that levels of gain/loss saturation can have significant impact on the bistable operation of a nonlinear PT Bragg grating based on GaAs material. The hysteresis of the nonlinear PT Bragg grating is analyzed for different levels of gain and loss and different saturation levels. We show that high saturation levels can improve the nonlinear operation by reducing the intensity at which the bistability occurs. However when the saturation intensity is low, saturation inhibits the PT characteristics of the grating.

Fluxon analogues and dark solitons in linearly coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

Two effectively one-dimensional parallel coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in the presence of external potentials are studied. The system is modelled by linearly coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations. In particular, grey-soliton-like solutions representing analogues of superconducting Josephson fluxons as well as coupled dark solitons are discussed. Theoretical approximations based on variational formulations are derived. It is found that the presence of a magnetic trap can destabilize the fluxon analogues. However, stabilization is possible by controlling the effective linear coupling between the condensates.

Pinned fluxons in a Josephson junction with a finite-length inhomogeneity

We consider a Josephson junction system installed with a finite length inhomogeneity, either of microresistor or of microresonator type. The system can be modelled by a sine-Gordon equation with a piecewise-constant function to represent the varying Josephson tunneling critical current. The existence of pinned fluxons depends on the length of the inhomogeneity, the variation in the Josephson tunneling critical current and the applied bias current. We establish that a system may either not be able to sustain a pinned fluxon, or - for instance by varying the length of the inhomogeneity - may exhibit various different types of pinned fluxons. Our stability analysis shows that changes of stability can only occur at critical points of the length of the inhomogeneity as a function of the (Hamiltonian) energy density inside the inhomogeneity - a relation we determine explicitly. In combination with continuation arguments and Sturm-Liouville theory, we determine the stability of all constructed pinned fluxons. It follows that if a given system is able to sustain at least one pinned fluxon, there is exactly one stable pinned fluxon, i.e. the system selects one unique stable pinned configuration. Moreover, it is shown that both for microresistors and microresonators this stable pinned configuration may be non-monotonic - something which is not possible in the homogeneous case. Finally, it is shown that results in the literature on localised inhomogeneities can be recovered as limits of our results on microresonators.

Breathing modes of long Josephson junctions with phase-shifts

We consider a spatially inhomogeneous sine-Gordon equation with a time-periodic drive, modeling a microwave driven long Josephson junction with phase-shifts. Under appropriate conditions, Josephson junctions with phase-shifts can have a spatially nonuniform ground state. In recent reports, it is experimentally shown that a microwave drive can be used to measure the eigenfrequency of a junction's ground state. Such a microwave spectroscopy is based on the observation that when the frequency of the applied microwave is in the vicinity of the natural frequency of the ground state, the junction can switch to a resistive state, characterized by a non-zero junction voltage. It was conjectured that the process is analogous to the resonant phenomenon in a simple pendulum motion driven by a time periodic external force. In the case of long junctions with phase-shifts, it would be a resonance between the internal breathing mode of the ground state and the microwave field. Nonetheless, it was also reported that the microwave power needed to switch the junction into a resistive state depends on the magnitude of the eigenfrequency to be measured. Using multiple scale expansions, we show here that an infinitely long Josephson junction with phase-shifts cannot be switched to a resistive state by microwave field with frequency close to the system's eigenfrequency, provided that the applied microwave amplitude is small enough, which confirms the experimental observations. It is because higher harmonics with frequencies in the continuous spectrum are excited, in the form of continuous wave radiation. The presence of applied microwaves balances the nonlinear damping, creating a stable breather mode oscillation. We confirm our analytical results numerically.

Existence and stability analysis of finite 0-$π$-0 Josephson junctions

We investigate analytically and numerically a Josephson junction on finite domain with two $π$-discontinuity points characterized by a jump of $π$ in the phase difference of the junction, i.e. a 0-$π$-0 Josephson junction. The system is described by a modified sine-Gordon equation. We show that there is an instability region in which semifluxons will be spontaneously generated. Using a Hamiltonian energy characterization, it is shown how the existence of static semifluxons depends on the length of the junction, the facet length, and the applied bias current. The critical eigenvalue of the semifluxons is discussed as well. Numerical simulations are presented, accompanying our analytical results.
