Reconstructing the galaxy redshift distribution from angular cross power spectra

The control of photometric redshift (photo-zz) errors is a crucial and challenging task for precision weak lensing cosmology. The spacial cross-correlations (equivalently, the angular cross power spectra) of galaxies between tomographic photo-zz bins are sensitive to the true redshift distribution ni(z)n_i(z) of each bin and hence can help calibrate the photo-zz error distribution for weak lensing surveys. Using Fisher matrix analysis, we investigate the contributions of various components of the angular power spectra to the constraints of ni(z)n_i(z) parameters and demonstrate the importance of the cross power spectra therein, especially when catastrophic photo-zz errors are present. We further study the feasibility of reconstructing ni(z)n_i(z) from galaxy angular power spectra using Markov Chain Monte Carlo estimation. Considering an LSST-like survey with 1010 photo-zz bins, we find that the underlying redshift distribution can be determined with a fractional precision (σ(θ)/θσ(θ)/θ for parameter θθ) of roughly 1%1\% and 10%10\% for the mean redshift and width of ni(z)n_i(z), respectively.

Perfect State Transfer in Laplacian Quantum Walk

For a graph GG and a related symmetric matrix MM, the continuous-time quantum walk on GG relative to MM is defined as the unitary matrix U(t)=exp⁡(−itM)U(t) = \exp(-itM), where tt varies over the reals. Perfect state transfer occurs between vertices uu and vv at time ττ if the (u,v)(u,v)-entry of U(τ)U(τ) has unit magnitude. This paper studies quantum walks relative to graph Laplacians. Some main observations include the following closure properties for perfect state transfer: (1) If a nn-vertex graph has perfect state transfer at time ττ relative to the Laplacian, then so does its complement if nτnτ is an integer multiple of 2π2π. As a corollary, the double cone over any mm-vertex graph has perfect state transfer relative to the Laplacian if and only if m≡2(mod4)m \equiv 2 \pmod{4}. This was previously known for a double cone over a clique (S. Bose, A. Casaccino, S. Mancini, S. Severini, Int. J. Quant. Inf., 7:11, 2009). (2) If a graph GG has perfect state transfer at time ττ relative to the normalized Laplacian, then so does the weak product G×HG \times H if for any normalized Laplacian eigenvalues λλ of GG and μμ of HH, we have μ(λ−1)τμ(λ-1)τ is an integer multiple of 2π2π. As a corollary, a weak product of P3P_{3} with an even clique or an odd cube has perfect state transfer relative to the normalized Laplacian. It was known earlier that a weak product of a circulant with odd integer eigenvalues and an even cube or a Cartesian power of P3P_{3} has perfect state transfer relative to the adjacency matrix. As for negative results, no path with four vertices or more has antipodal perfect state transfer relative to the normalized Laplacian. This almost matches the state of affairs under the adjacency matrix (C. Godsil, Discrete Math., 312:1, 2011).

Likelihood of the Power Spectrum in Cosmological Parameter Estimation

The likelihood function is a crucial element of parameter estimation. In analyses of galaxy overdensities and weak lensing shear, one often approximates the likelihood of the power spectrum with a Gaussian distribution. The posterior probability derived from such a likelihood deviates considerably from the exact posterior on the largest scales probed by any survey, where the central limit theorem does not apply. We show that various forms of Gaussian likelihoods can have a significant impact on the estimation of the primordial non-Gaussianity parameter f_NL from the galaxy angular power spectrum. The Gaussian plus log-normal likelihood, which has been applied successfully in analyses of the cosmic microwave background, outperforms the Gaussian likelihoods. Nevertheless, even if the exact likelihood of the power spectrum is used, the estimated parameters may be still biased. As such, the likelihoods and estimators need to be thoroughly examined for potential systematic errors.

The correlation function of galaxy clusters and detection of baryon acoustic oscillations

We calculate the correlation function of 13,904 galaxy clusters of z \leq 0.4 selected from the cluster catalog of Wen, Han & Liu. The correlation function can be fitted with a power-law model ξ(r)=(r/R_0)^γ on the scales of 10h^(-1)Mpc \leq r \leq 50h^(-1)Mpc, with a larger correlation length of R_0=18.84\pm0.27 h^(-1)Mpc for clusters with a richness of R \geq 15 and a smaller length of R_0=16.15 \pm 0.13 h^(-1)Mpc for clusters with a richness of R \geq 5. The power law index of γ=2.1 is found to be almost the same for all cluster subsamples. A pronounced baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) peak is detected at r ~ 110 h^(-1)Mpc with a significance of ~ 1.9σ. By analyzing the correlation function in the range of 20 h^(-1)Mpc \leq r \leq 200 h^(-1)Mpc, we find the constraints on distance parameters are D_v(0.276)=1077\pm55(1σ) Mpc and h=0.73 \pm 0.039 (1σ), which are consistent with the WMAP 7-year cosmology. However, the BAO signal from the cluster sample is stronger than expected and leads to a rather low matter density Ω_m h^2=0.093\pm0.0077 (1σ), which deviates from the WMAP 7-year result by more than 3 σ. The correlation function of the GMBCG cluster sample is also calculated and our detection of the BAO feature is confirmed.
