The long-lived Type IIn SN 2015da: Infrared echoes and strong interaction within an extended massive shell

In this paper we report the results of the first $\sim$four years of spectroscopic and photometric monitoring of the Type IIn supernova SN 2015da (also known as PSN J13522411+3941286, or iPTF16tu). The supernova exploded in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 5337 in a relatively highly extinguished environment. The transient showed prominent narrow Balmer lines in emission at all times and a slow rise to maximum in all bands. In addition, early observations performed by amateur astronomers give a very well-constrained explosion epoch. The observables are consistent with continuous interaction between the supernova ejecta and a dense and extended H-rich circumstellar medium. The presence of such an extended and dense medium is difficult to reconcile with standard stellar evolution models, since the metallicity at the position of SN 2015da seems to be slightly subsolar. Interaction is likely the mechanism powering the light curve, as confirmed by the analysis of the pseudo bolometric light curve, which gives a total radiated energy $\gtrsim10^{51}\,\rm{erg}$. Modeling the light curve in the context of a supernova shock breakout through a dense circumstellar medium allowed us to infer the mass of the prexisting gas to be $\simeq8\,\rm{M_{\odot}}$, with an extreme mass-loss rate for the progenitor star $\simeq0.6\,\rm{M_{\odot}}\,\rm{yr^{-1}}$, suggesting that most of the circumstellar gas was produced during multiple eruptive events. Near- and mid-infrared observations reveal a flux excess in these domains, similar to those observed in SN 2010jl and other interacting transients, likely due to preexisting radiatively heated dust surrounding the supernova. By modeling the infrared excess, we infer a mass $\gtrsim0.4\times10^{-3}\,\rm{M_{\odot}}$ for the dust.

Extension of the Wu-Jing equation of state (EOS) for highly porous materials: calculations to validate and compare the thermoelectron model

In order to verify and validate the newly developed thermoelectron equation of state (EOS) model that is based on the Wu-Jing (W-J) EOS, calculations of shock compression behavior have been made on five different porous metals-iron, copper, lead, tungsten, and aluminum-which are commonly used as standards. The model was used to calculate the Hugoniot, shock temperature, sound velocity, and unloading isentrope for these materials and comparisons were made to previous calculations and available data. Based on these comparisons, it is felt that the model provides information in good agreement with the corresponding experimental and theoretical data published previously. This suggests that the new model can satisfactorily describe the properties of shocked porous materials over a wide range of pressure and porosity.

Extension of the Wu-Jing equation of state (EOS) for highly porous materials: thermoelectron based theoretical model

A thermodynamic equation of state (EOS) for thermoelectrons is derived which is appropriate for investigating the thermodynamic variations along isobaric paths. By using this EOS and the Wu-Jing (W-J) model, an extended Hugoniot EOS model is developed which can predict the compression behavior of highly porous materials. Theoretical relationships for the shock temperature, bulk sound velocity, and the isentrope are developed. This method has the advantage of being able to model the behavior of porous metals over the full range of applicability of pressure and porosity, whereas methods proposed in the past have been limited in their applicability.

Microstructure and interface studies of LaVO3/SrVO3 superlattices

The structure and interface characteristics of (LaVO3)6m(SrVO3)m superlattices deposited on (100)-SrTiO3 (STO) substrate were studied using Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). Cross-section TEM studies revealed that both LaVO3 (LVO) and SrVO3 (SVO) layers are good single crystal quality and epitaxially grown with respect to the substrate. It is evidenced that LVO layers are made of two orientational variants of a distorted perovskite compatible with bulk LaVO3 while SVO layers suffers from a tetragonal distortion due to the substrate induced stain. Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (EELS) investigations indicate changes in the fine structure of the V L23 edge, related to a valence change between the LaVO3 and SrVO3 layers.
