Acoustogalvanic effect in Dirac and Weyl semimetals

The acoustogalvanic effect is proposed as a nonlinear mechanism to generate a direct electric current by passing acoustic waves in Dirac and Weyl semimetals. Unlike the standard acoustoelectric effect, which relies on the sound-induced deformation potential and the corresponding electric field, the acoustogalvanic one originates from the pseudo-electromagnetic fields, which are not subject to screening. The longitudinal acoustogalvanic current scales at least quadratically with the relaxation time, which is in contrast to the photogalvanic current where the scaling is linear. Because of the interplay of pseudoelectric and pseudomagnetic fields, the current could show a nontrivial dependence on the direction of sound wave propagation. Being within the experimental reach, the effect can be utilized to probe dynamical deformations and corresponding pseudo-electromagnetic fields, which are yet to be experimentally observed in Weyl and Dirac semimetals.

Hot electrons modulation of third harmonic generation in graphene

Hot electrons dominate the ultrafast ($\sim$fs-ps) optical and electronic properties of metals and semiconductors and they are exploited in a variety of applications including photovoltaics and photodetection. We perform power-dependent third harmonic generation measurements on gated single-layer graphene and detect a significant deviation from the cubic power-law expected for a third harmonic generation process. We assign this to the presence of hot electrons. Our results indicate that the performance of nonlinear photonics devices based on graphene, such as optical modulators and frequency converters, can be affected by changes in the electronic temperature, which might occur due to increase of absorbed optical power or Joule heating.

Electronic ground state properties of strained graphene

We consider the effect of the Coulomb interaction in strained graphene using tight-binding approximation together with the Hartree-Fock interactions. The many-body energy dispersion relation, anisotropic Fermi velocity renormalization and charge compressibility in the presence of uniaxial strain are calculated. We show that the quasiparticle quantities are sensitive to homogenous strain and indeed, to its sign. The charge compressibility is enhanced by stretching and suppressed by compressing a graphene sheet. We find a reduction of Fermi velocity renormalization along the direction of graphene deformation, in good agreement with the recent experimental observation.
