Bona-Massó slices of Reissner-Nordström spacetimes

Motivated by recent numerical relativity simulations of charged black holes and their interactions, we explore the properties of common slicing conditions in Reissner-Nordström spacetimes. Specifically, we consider different choices for the so-called Bona-Massó function, and construct static and spherically symmetric slices of the Reissner-Nordström spacetime satisfying the corresponding slicing conditions. For some of these functions the construction is entirely analytical, while for others we use numerical root-finding to solve quartic equations. Our solutions are parameterized by the charge-to-mass ratio $λ= Q/M$ and approach a unique slice, independent of the Bona-Massó functions considered here, in the extremal limit $λ\to 1$.

Quest for eternal oscillons

Nonlinear field theories produce unstable but long-lived configurations known as oscillons. These structures have been studied with asymmetric and symmetric double-well potentials and extended to other forms of potentials. In the present work, we examine the consequences of considering higher-order field theories, where we have used a generalization of the symmetric double-well potential and a $ϕ^6$ potential. Consequently, we have found $3+1$ spherically symmetric oscillons with significantly large lifetimes without parameter fine-tuning.

The Bondi problem revisited: a spectral domain decomposition code

We present a simple domain decomposition code based on the Galerkin-Collocation method to integrate the field equations of the Bondi problem. The algorithm is stable, exhibits exponential convergence when considering the Bondi formula as an error measure, and is computationally economical. We have incorporated features of both Galerkin and Collocation methods along with the establishment of two non-overlapping subdomains. We have further applied the code to show the decay of the Bondi mass in the nonlinear regime and its power-law late time decay. Another application is the determination of the wave-forms at the future null infinity connected with distinct initial data.

Aspects of wave turbulence in preheating II: Rebirth of the nonminimal coupled models

We study the nonlinear stage of preheating in a model consisting of a single inflaton field $ϕ$ nonminimally coupled to the spacetime curvature and considering a self-coupling quartic potential V ($ϕ$) = $λϕ^4/4$. As the first motivation, we mention that this nonminimally coupled model agrees with the observational data. The second and the central issue of the present work is to exhibit aspects of wave turbulence associated with the mechanism of energy transfer from the inflaton field to the inhomogeneous fluctuations towards a state of thermalization. The imprints of the turbulence phase are mainly shown in the power spectra in time and wavenumber of relevant quantities such as the variance and the energy density of the inflaton field. We performed the simulations for several values of the nonminimally coupled models and taking into account the backreaction of the inflaton fluctuations in the dynamics of the Universe, and that allowed to determine the effective equation of state.

Scattering of compactlike structures

We investigate the collision of a new class of topological defects that tends to become compact as a control parameter increases to larger and larger values These new compactlike defects have, in general, more than one internal discrete mode depending on the value of the control parameter and, as usual, there is a critical velocity above which the defects escape after the collision. We noticed that below the critical velocity there are the windows of escape presenting fractal structure. An interesting novelty is the appearance of metastable structures with the formation of compactlike defects, maintaining a fixed distance from each other. Another new feature is the formation of boosted localized distributions of the scalar field which we called moving oscillons. These oscillons carry away almost all scalar field energy producing a complete disruption of the compactlike defects. The pattern of the moving oscillons depends on the control parameter, and becomes more complex as we increase its value. We conjecture that the new effects may be connected with the presence of more than one vibrational mode in the spectrum of the stability potential of the model under investigation.

A note about a new class of two-kinks

We present a model of two-kinks resulting from an explicit composition of two standards kinks of the $ϕ^4$ model based on the procedure of Ref. \cite{uchiyama}. The two-kinks have an additional parameter accounting for the separation of the standard kinks of $ϕ^4$ model. We have shown that the two-kinks have two discrete internal modes besides the zeroth mode and the continuous spectrum. This new feature signalizes that the head-on collision a two-kinks/two-antikinks pair exhibits a rich and complex behavior due to the additional channel from which the energy of the system can be stored. We have exhibited the fractal structure associated with the main configurations after the collision. We have inferred the fractality as the imprint of the nonlinear exchange of energy into the two discrete internal modes.

Nonlinear evolution of cylindrical gravitational waves: numerical method and physical aspects

General cylindrical waves are the simplest axisymmetrical gravitational waves that contain both $+$ and $\times$ modes of polarization. In this paper, we have studied the evolution of general cylindrical gravitational waves in the realm of the characteristic scheme with a numerical code based on the Galerkin-Collocation method. The investigation consists of the numerical realization of concepts such as Bondi mass and the news functions adapted to cylindrical symmetry. The Bondi mass decays due to the presence of the news functions associated with both polarization modes. We have interpreted that each polarization mode as channels from which mass is extracted. Under this perspective, we have presented the enhancement effect of the polarization mode $+$ due to the nonlinear interaction with the mode $\times$. After discussing the role of matter in cylindrical symmetry, we have extended the numerical code to include electromagnetic fields.

The collision of two-kinks defects

We have investigated the head-on collision of a two-kink and a two-antikink pair that arises as a generalization of the $ϕ^4$ model. We have evolved numerically the Klein-Gordon equation with a new spectral algorithm whose accuracy and convergence were attested by the numerical tests. As a general result, the two-kink pair is annihilated radiating away most of the scalar field. It is possible the production of oscillons-like configurations after the collision that bounce and coalesce to form a small amplitude oscillon at the origin. The new feature is the formation of a sequence of quasi-stationary structures that we have identified as lump-like solutions of non-topological nature. The amount of time these structures survives depends on the fine-tuning of the impact velocity.

Three dimensional distorted black holes: using the Galerkin-Collocation method

We present an implementation of the Galerkin-Collocation method to determine the initial data for non-rotating distorted three dimensional black holes in the inversion and puncture schemes. The numerical method combines the key features of the Galerkin and Collocation methods which produces accurate initial data. We evaluated the ADM mass of the initial data sets, and we have provided the angular structure of the gravitational wave distribution at the initial hypersurface by evaluating the scalar $Ψ_4$ for asymptotic observers.

Aspects of Wave Turbulence in Preheating

In this work we have studied the nonlinear preheating dynamics of the $\frac{1}{4} λϕ^4$ inflationary model. It is well established that after a linear stage of preheating characterized by the parametric resonance, the nonlinear dynamics becomes relevant driving the system towards turbulence. Wave turbulence is the appropriated description of this phase since matter distributions are fields instead of usual fluids. Therefore, turbulence develops due to the nonlinear interations of waves, here represented by the small inhomogeneities of the inflaton field. We present relevant aspects of wave turbulence such as the Kolmogorov-Zakharov spectrum in frequency and wave number domains that indicates that there are a transfer of energy through scales. From the power spectrum of the matter energy density we were able to estimate the temperature of the thermalized system.

A Kolmogorov-Zakharov Spectrum in $AdS$ Gravitational Collapse

We study black hole formation during the gravitational collapse of a massless scalar field in asymptotically $AdS_D$ spacetimes for $D=4,5$. We conclude that spherically symmetric gravitational collapse in asymptotically $AdS$ spaces is turbulent and characterized by a Kolmogorov-Zakharov spectrum. Namely, we find that after an initial period of weakly nonlinear evolution, there is a regime where the power spectrum of the Ricci scalar evolves as $ω^{-s}$ with the frequency, $ω$, and $s\approx 1.7\pm 0.1$.

Turbulence and Chaos in Anti-de-Sitter Gravity

Due to the AdS/CFT correspondence the question of instability of Anti-de-Sitter spacetimes sits in the intersection of mathematical and numerical relativity, string theory, field theory and condensed matter physics. In this essay we revisit that important question emphasizing the power of spectral methods and highlighting the effectiveness of standard techniques for studying nonlinear dynamical systems. In particular we display explicitly how the problem can be modeled as a system on nonlinearly coupled harmonic oscillators. We highlight some of the many open questions that stem from this result and point out that a full understanding will necessarily required the interdisciplinary cooperation of various communities.

Numerical Evolution of axisymmetric vacuum spacetimes: a code based on the Galerkin method

We present the first numerical code based on the Galerkin and Collocation methods to integrate the field equations of the Bondi problem. The Galerkin method like all spectral methods provide high accuracy with moderate computational effort. Several numerical tests were performed to verify the issues of convergence, stability and accuracy with promising results. This code opens up several possibilities of applications in more general scenarios for studying the evolution of spacetimes with gravitational waves.

Numerical evolution of general Robinson-Trautman spacetimes: code tests, wave forms and the efficiency of the gravitational wave extraction

We present an efficient numerical code based on spectral methods to integrate the field equations of general Robinson-Trautmann spacetimes. The most natural basis functions for the spectral expansion of the metric functions are spherical harmonics. Using the values of appropriate combinations of the metric functions at the collocation points, we have managed to reduce expression swell when the number of spherical harmonics increases. Our numerical code runs with relatively little computational resources and the code tests have shown excellent accuracy and convergence. The code has been applied to situations of physical interest in the context of Robsinson-Trautmann geometries such as: perturbation of the exterior gravitational field of a spheroid of matter; perturbation of an initially boosted black hole; and the non-frontal collision of two Schwarzschild black holes. In dealing with these processes we have derived analytical lower and upper bounds on the velocity of the resulting black hole and the efficiency of the gravitational wave extraction, respectively. Numerical experiments were performed to determine the forms of the gravitational waves and the efficiency in each situation of interest.

Compactlike kinks and vortices in generalized models

This work deals with the presence of topological defects in k-field models, where the dynamics is generalized to include higher order power in the kinetic term. We investigate kinks in (1,1) dimensions and vortices in (2,1) dimensions, focusing on some specific features of the solutions. In particular, we show how the kinks and vortices change to compactlike solutions, controlled by the parameter used to introduce the generalized models.

The dynamics of apparent horizons in Robinson-Trautman spacetimes

We present an alternative scheme of finding apparent horizons based on spectral methods applied to Robinson-Trautman spacetimes. We have considered distinct initial data such as representing the spheroids of matter and the head-on collision of two non-rotating black holes. The evolution of the apparent horizon is presented. We have obtained in some cases a mass gap between the final Bondi and apparent horizon masses, whose implications were briefly commented in the light of the thermodynamics of black holes.

Density perturbations in warm inflation and COBE normalization

Starting from a gauge invariant treatment of perturbations an analytical expression for the spectrum of long wavelength density perturbations in warm inflation is derived. The adiabatic and entropy modes are exhibited explicitly. As an application of the analytical results, we determined the observational constraint for the dissipation term compatible with COBE observation of the cosmic microwave radiation anisotropy for some specific models. In view of the results the feasibility of warm inflation is discussed.

Dynamics and Collision of Massive Shells in Curved Backgrounds

We analyse the dynamics of the collision of two spherical massive shells in a generally spherically symmetric background, obtaining an expression from the conservation law that imposes a constraint between the different parameters involved. We study the light-like limit and make some comparisons of the predictions of our master equation with the results obtained in the case of collision of light-like shells, like the short life of white holes or the mass inflation phenomena. We present some particular cases of the constraint equation.
