Measurement of the B0→D∗−ℓ+νℓB^{0} \rightarrow D^{*-} \ell^{+} ν_{\ell} branching ratio and ∣Vcb∣|V_{cb}| with a fully reconstructed accompanying BB meson in 2019-2021 Belle II data

We present a measurement of the B0→D∗−ℓ+νℓB^{0} \rightarrow D^{*-} \ell^{+} ν_{\ell} (ℓ=e,μ\ell=e,μ) branching ratio and of the CKM parameter ∣Vcb∣|V_{cb}| using signal decays accompanied by a fully reconstructed BB meson. The Belle II data set of electron-positron collisions at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance, corresponding to 189.3 \,fb−1^{-1} of integrated luminosity, is analyzed. With the Caprini-Lellouch-Neubert form factor parameterization, the parameters ηEWF(1)∣Vcb∣η_{\rm EW} F(1) |V_{cb}| and ρ2ρ^{2} are extracted, where ηEWη_{\rm EW} is an electroweak correction, F(1)F(1) is a normalization factor and ρ2ρ^{2} is a form factor shape parameter. We reconstruct 516 signal decays and thereby obtain B(B0→D∗−ℓ+νℓ)=(5.27±0.22 (stat)±0.38 (syst))%\mathcal{B} (B^{0} \rightarrow D^{*-} \ell^{+} ν_{\ell} ) = \left(5.27 \pm 0.22~\rm{\left(stat\right)} \pm 0.38~\rm{\left(syst\right)}\right) \%, ηEWF(1)∣Vcb∣×103=34.6±1.8 (stat)±1.7 (syst)η_{EW} F(1) |V_{cb}| \times 10^{3} = 34.6 \pm 1.8~\rm{\left(stat\right)} \pm 1.7~\rm{\left(syst\right)}, and ρ2=0.94±0.18 (stat)±0.11 (syst)ρ^{2} = 0.94 \pm 0.18~\rm{\left(stat\right)} \pm 0.11~\rm{\left(syst\right)}.

Application of recoil-imaging time projection chambers to directional neutron background measurements in the SuperKEKB accelerator tunnel

Gaseous time projection chambers (TPCs) with high readout segmentation are capable of reconstructing detailed 3D ionization distributions of nuclear recoils resulting from elastic neutron scattering. Using a system of six compact TPCs with pixel ASIC readout, filled with a 70:30 mixture of He:CO2_2 gas, we analyze the first directional measurements of beam-induced neutron backgrounds in the tunnel regions surrounding the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB e+e−e^+e^- collider. With the use of 3D recoil tracking, we show that these TPCs are capable of maintaining nearly 100%100\% nuclear recoil purity to reconstructed ionization energies (ErecoE_\text{reco}) as low as 5 keVee\mathrm{keV_\text{ee}}. Using a large sample of simulated 4^4He, 12^{12}C, and 16^{16}O recoil tracks, we find consistency between predicted and measured recoil energy spectra in five of the six TPCs, providing useful validation of the neutron production mechanisms modeled in simulation. Restricting this sample to 4^4He recoil tracks with Ereco>40E_\text{reco}>40 keVee\mathrm{keV_\text{ee}}, we demonstrate axial angular resolutions within 8∘8^{\circ} and we introduce a procedure that under suitable conditions, correctly assigns the vector direction to 91%91\% of simulated 4^4He recoils. Applying this procedure to assign vector directions to measured 4^4He recoil tracks, we observe consistency between the angular distributions of observed and simulated recoils, providing first experimental evidence of localized neutron "hotspots" in the accelerator tunnel. Observed rates of nuclear recoils in these TPCs suggest that simulation overestimates the neutron flux from these hotspots.

Beam background expectations for Belle II at SuperKEKB

The Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider aims to collect an unprecedented data set of 50 ab−1\rm 50~{\rm ab}^{-1} to study CPCP-violation in the BB-meson system and to search for Physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM). SuperKEKB is already the world's highest-luminosity collider. In order to collect the planned data set within approximately one decade, the target is to reach a peak luminosity of 6.3×1035 cm−2s−1\rm 6.3 \times 10^{35}~cm^{-2}s^{-1} by further increasing the beam currents and reducing the beam-size at the interaction point by squeezing the betatron function down to βy∗=0.3 mmβ^{*}_{\rm y}=\rm 0.3~mm. Beam backgrounds are a key challenge in this context. We estimate the expected background evolution in the next ten years and discuss potential challenges and background mitigation strategies. We find that backgrounds will remain high but acceptable until a luminosity of at least 2.8×1035 cm−2s−1\rm 2.8\times 10^{35}~cm^{-2}s^{-1} is reached at βy∗=0.6 mmβ^{*}_{\rm y}=\rm 0.6~mm. Beyond this luminosity, predictions are highly uncertain, owing to a planned redesign of the interaction region. Improved background estimates with reduced uncertainties for the final, maximum-luminosity operation will require completion of this redesign.

First decay-time-dependent analysis of B0→KS0π0B^{0} \to K_{S}^{0} π^{0} at Belle II

We report measurements of the branching fraction (B\mathcal{B}) and direct CPCP-violating asymmetry (ACPA_{CP}) of the charmless decay B0→K0π0B^{0} \to K^0 π^0 at Belle II. A sample of e+e−e^{+} e^{-} collisions, corresponding to 189.8fb−1189.8 fb^{-1} of integrated luminosity, recorded at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance is used for the first decay-time-dependent analysis of these decays within the experiment. We reconstruct about 135 signal candidates, and measure B(B0→K0π0)=[11.0±1.2(stat)±1.0(syst)]×10−6\mathcal{B}(B^{0} \to K^{0} π^{0})= [11.0 \pm 1.2 (stat) \pm 1.0 (syst)] \times 10^{-6} and ACP(B0→K0π0)=−0.41−0.32+0.30(stat)±0.09(syst)A_{CP} (B^{0} \to K^{0} π^{0})= -0.41_{-0.32}^{+0.30} (stat) \pm 0.09 (syst).

Measurement of Branching Fraction and Longitudinal Polarization in B0→ρ+ρ−B^0 \to ρ^+ ρ^- Decays at Belle II

We present a measurement of the branching fraction and longitudinal polarization of B0→ρ+ρ−B^0 \to ρ^+ ρ^- decays. SuperKEKB electron-positron collision data corresponding to 189~fb−1^{-1} of integrated luminosity and containing 198×106BBˉ198 \times 10^6 B\bar{B} pairs collected with the Belle II detector are used. We obtain \begin{eqnarray*} \mathcal{B}(B^0\toρ^+ρ^-) &=& [2.67\pm0.28\,(\mathrm{stat})\,\pm0.28\,(\mathrm{syst})] \times 10^{-5}, \end{eqnarray*} \begin{eqnarray*} f_L &=& 0.956\pm0.035\,(\mathrm{stat})\,\pm 0.033\,(\mathrm{syst}), \end{eqnarray*} These results are consistent with previous measurements and can be used to constrain penguin pollution and to extract the quark-mixing angle ϕ2ϕ_2.

ττ lepton mass measurement at Belle II

The reconstruction of tau-pair production, e+e−→τ+τ−e^{+}e^{-} \to τ^{+}τ^{-}, from the subsequent 3-prong (τ+→π+π−π+νˉττ^{+} \rightarrow π^{+} π^{-} π^{+} \barν_τ) and 1-prong (τ−→ℓ−νˉℓνττ^{-} \to \ell^{-} \barν_{\ell} ν_τ, τ−→h−νττ^{-} \to h^{-} ν_τ or τ−→π−π0νττ^{-} \to π^{-} π^0 ν_τ) decays, is presented using 8.8 fb−1^{-1} of e+e−e^{+}e^{-} collision data of Belle II at the center-of-mass energy s=mΥ(4S)\sqrt{s} = m_{Υ(4S)}. The pseudomass technique developed by the ARGUS experiment is used to measure the ττ-lepton mass mτm_τ in the 3-prong τ+→π+π−π+νˉττ^{+} \to π^{+} π^{-} π^{+} \barν_τ decay, resulting in mτ=1777.28±0.75 (stat.)±0.33 (sys.) MeV/c2m_τ = 1777.28 \pm 0.75~{\rm (stat.)} \pm 0.33 ~{\rm (sys.)}~{\rm{MeV}/\rm{c}^2}.

First 3D vector tracking of helium recoils for fast neutron measurements at SuperKEKB

We present results from the first deployment of novel, high definition, compact gas Time Projection Chambers (TPCs) with pixel chip readout as part of the BEAST II beam background measurement project at SuperKEKB. The TPCs provide detailed 3D imaging of ionization from neutron-induced nuclear recoils in a helium and carbon dioxide target gas mixture at standard temperature and pressure. We find excellent electron background rejection, leading to background-free nuclear recoil measurements above 50 keVee, despite the extreme high-background environment. We measure an angular resolution better than 20° for recoil tracks longer than 1.7 mm, corresponding to an average ionization energy of ~100 keVee. We also obtain the 3D vector direction of helium recoils by utilizing charge profile measurements along the recoil axis, with a correct head/tail assignment efficiency of approximately 80%. With this performance, we present comparisons between measured and simulated event rates, recoil energy spectra, and directional distributions originating from beam-gas and Touschek beam losses at SuperKEKB. We utilize head/tail recognition to distinguish neutron components travelling with positive radial velocity in the Belle II coordinate system from those with opposite directionality. Finally, we present a novel method of discriminating beam-gas interactions from Touschek beam losses that can eliminate the need for dedicated accelerator runs for background measurements. This method is still statistics-limited. However, future studies should be able to verify this method, which in turn could lead to neutron background analysis runs symbiotic with normal Belle II operation. The capabilities demonstrated here also suggest that high definition recoil imaging in gas TPCs is applicable to low energy, low-background experiments, such as directional dark matter searches.

Performance of the diamond-based beam-loss monitor system of Belle II

We designed, constructed and have been operating a system based on single-crystal synthetic diamond sensors, to monitor the beam losses at the interaction region of the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy electron-positron collider. The system records the radiation dose-rates in positions close to the inner detectors of the Belle II experiment, and protects both the detector and accelerator components against destructive beam losses, by participating in the beam-abort system. It also provides complementary information for the dedicated studies of beam-related backgrounds. We describe the performance of the system during the commissioning of the accelerator and during the first physics data taking.

A calibration of the Belle II hadronic tag-side reconstruction algorithm with B→XℓνB \rightarrow X\ell ν decays

Tag-side reconstruction is an important method for reconstructing BB meson decays with missing energy. The Belle II tag-side reconstruction algorithm, Full Event Interpretation, relies on a hierarchical reconstruction of BB meson decays with multivariate classification employed at each stage of reconstruction. Given the large numbers of classifiers employed and decay chains reconstructed, the performance of the algorithm on data and simulation differs significantly. Here, calibration factors are derived for hadronic tag-side BB decays by measuring a signal side decay, B→XℓνB \rightarrow X\ell ν, in 34.634.6 fb−1^{-1} of Belle II data. For a very loose selection on the tag-side BB multivariate classifier, the calibration factors are 0.65±0.020.65 \pm 0.02 and 0.83±0.030.83 \pm 0.03 for tag-side B+B^{+} and B0B^{0} mesons, respectively.

Charmless BB decay reconstruction in 2019 Belle II data

We report on the reconstruction of various charmless BB decays from electron-positron collisions at the energy corresponding to the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB collider. We use simulation to devise optimized event selections and apply them to the full data set collected in 2019, corresponding to 8.7\,fb−1^{-1} of integrated luminosity. We fit the difference between half of the collision energy and the BB candidate energy (in the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) frame) for events restricted to a signal-rich range in beam-energy-constrained mass to search for charmless signals. Signal yields of approximately 80, 15, 20, 30, 90, and 160 decays are reconstructed for the channels B0→K+π−B^0 \to K^+π^-, B0→π+π−B^0 \to π^+π^-, B+→KS0(→π+π−)π+B^+ \to K^0_S(\to π^+π^-)π^+, B+→K+π0(→γγ)B^+ \to K^+π^0(\to γγ), B+→K+K−K+B^+ \to K^+K^-K^+, and B+→K+π−π+B^+ \to K^+π^-π^+, respectively. Yields and background contaminations are compatible with those expected from simulation and comparable with those obtained by the Belle experiment. The results show a good understanding of the detector performance and offer a reliable basis to assess projections for future reach.

We present the results of the re-discovery of the decay B0→π−ℓ+νℓB^0 \to π^- \ell^+ ν_\ell in 34.6 fb−1^{-1} of Belle II data using hadronic BB-tagging via the Full Event Interpretation algorithm. We observe 21 signal events on a background of 155 in a fit to the distribution of the square of the missing mass, Mmiss2M_{\mathrm{miss}}^2, with a significance of 5.69σσ, and determine a total branching fraction of (1.58 ±\pm 0.43stat_{\mathrm{stat}} ±\pm 0.07sys_{\mathrm{sys}}) ×10−4\times 10^{-4}.

First flavor tagging calibration using 2019 Belle II data

We report on the first calibration of the standard Belle II BB-flavor tagger using the full data set collected at the Υ(4S)Υ(4{\rm S}) resonance in 2019 with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB collider, corresponding to 8.7 fb−1^{-1} of integrated luminosity. The calibration is performed by reconstructing various hadronic charmed BB-meson decays with flavor-specific final states. We use simulation to optimize our event selection criteria and to train the flavor tagging algorithm. We determine the tagging efficiency and the fraction of wrongly identified tag-side BB~candidates from a measurement of the time-integrated B0−B‾0B^0-\overline{B}^0 mixing probability. The total effective efficiency is measured to be εeff=(33.8±3.6(stat)±1.6(sys))%\varepsilon_{\rm eff} = \big(33.8 \pm 3.6(\text{stat}) \pm 1.6(\text{sys})\big)\%, which is in good agreement with the predictions from simulation and comparable with the best one obtained by the Belle experiment. The results show a good understanding of the detector performance and offer a basis for future calibrations.

Measurement of Hadronic Mass Moments ⟨MXn⟩\langle M_X^n \rangle in B→XcℓνB \rightarrow X_c \ell ν Decays at Belle II

We present measurements of the first six hadronic mass moments in semileptonic B→XcℓνB \rightarrow X_c \ell ν decays. The hadronic mass moments, together with other observables of inclusive BB decays, can be used to determine the CKM matrix element ∣Vcb∣|{V_{cb}}| and mass of the bb-quark mbm_b in the context of Heavy Quark Expansions of QCD. The Belle~II data recorded at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance in 2019 and 2020 (March-July), corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 34.6  fb−134.6\;\mathrm{fb}^{-1}, is used for this measurement. The decay Υ(4S)→BB‾Υ(4S) \rightarrow B \overline{B} is reconstructed by applying the hadronic tagging algorithm provided by the Full Event Interpretation to fully reconstruct one BB meson. The second BB meson is reconstructed inclusively by selecting a high-momentum lepton. The XcX_c system is identified by the remaining reconstructed tracks and clusters in the electromagnetic calorimeter. We report preliminary results for the hadronic mass moments ⟨MXn⟩\langle M_X^n \rangle with n=1,…,6n=1,\dots,6, measured as a function of a lower cut on the lepton momentum in the signal BB rest frame.

Measurement of the B0B^0 lifetime using fully reconstructed hadronic decays in the 2019 Belle II dataset

This document presents the measurement of B0B^0 meson lifetimes using the 2019 Belle II dataset that corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 8.7±0.28.7 \pm 0.2 fb−1^{-1}. Each candidate is fully reconstructed with hadronic decay final states on the signal side, while the rest-of-event technique allows to infer the decay vertex position on the other (tag) side. B0B^0 lifetime is extracted from an unbinned maximum likelihood fit to the distribution of the difference between the signal side B0B^0 candidate and the tag side decay times. The measured lifetime is τB0=1.48±0.28±0.06τ_{B^0} = 1.48 \pm 0.28 \pm 0.06 ps, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

Measurement of the branching fraction B(Bˉ0→D∗+ℓ−νˉℓ){\cal B}(\bar B^0\to D^{*+}\ell^-\barν_\ell) with early Belle II data

Measurement of two-particle correlations in hadronic e+e−e^{+}e^{-} collisions at Belle

The enhancement of charged-particle pairs with large pseudorapidity difference and small azimuthal angle difference, often referred to as the ``ridge signal'', is a phenomenon widely observed in high multiplicity proton-proton, proton-ion and deutron-ion collisions, which is not yet fully understood. In heavy-ion collisions, the hydrodynamic expansion of the Quark-Gluon Plasma is one of the possible explanations of the origin of the ridge signal. Measurements in the e+e−e^+e^- collision system, without the complexities introduced by hadron structure in the initial state, can serve as a complementary probe to examine the formation of a ridge signal. The first measurement of two-particle angular correlation functions in high multiplicity e+e−e^+e^- collisions at s=10.52\sqrt{s}=10.52 GeV is reported. The hadronic e+e−e^+e^- annihilation data collected by the Belle detector at KEKB are used in this study. Two-particle angular correlation functions are measured over the full azimuth and large pseudorapidity intervals which are defined by either the electron beam axis or the event thrust as a function of charged particle multiplicity. The measurement in the event thrust analysis, with mostly outgoing quark pairs determining the reference axis, is sensitive to the region of additional soft gluon emissions. No significant ridge signal is observed with either coordinates analyses. Near side jet correlations appear to be absent in the thrust axis analysis. The measurements are compared to predictions from various event generators and expected to provide new constraints to the phenomenological models in the low energy regime.

Measurements of branching fractions and CP-violating charge asymmetries in charmless BB decays reconstructed in 2019--2020 Belle~II data

We report on first measurements of branching fractions~(B\mathcal{B}) and CP-violating charge asymmetries~(A\mathcal{A}) in charmless BB decays at Belle~II. We use a sample of electron-positron collisions collected in 2019 and 2020 at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance and corresponding to 34.634.6\,fb−1^{-1} of integrated luminosity. We use simulation to determine optimized event selections. The ΔEΔE distributions of the resulting samples, restricted in MbcM_{\rm bc}, are fit to determine signal yields. Signal yields are corrected for efficiencies determined from simulation and control data samples to obtain branching fractions and CP-violating asymmetries for flavour-specific channels. These are the first measurements in charmless decays reported by Belle~II. Results are compatible with known determinations and show detector performance comparable with the best Belle results offering a reliable basis to assess projections for future reach.

Rediscovery of B→ϕK(∗)B \to ϕK^{(*)} decays and measurement of the longitudinal polarization fraction fLf_L in B→ϕK∗B \to ϕK^{*} decays using the Summer 2020 Belle II dataset

We utilize a sample of 34.6 fb−1^{-1}, collected by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric energy e+e−e^+e^- collider, to search for the B+→ϕK+B^+ \to ϕK^+, B+→ϕK∗+B^+ \to ϕK^{*+}, B0→ϕKS0B^0 \to ϕK^0_S, and B0→ϕK∗0B^0 \to ϕK^{*0} decays. Charmless hadronic BB decays represent an important part of the Belle II physics program, and are an ideal benchmark to test the detector capabilities in terms of tracking efficiency, charged particle identification, vertexing, and advanced analysis techniques. Each channel is observed with a significance that exceeds 5 standard deviations, and we obtain measurements of their branching ratios that are in good agreement with the world averages. For the B→ϕK∗B \to ϕK^* modes, we also perform a measurement of the longitudinal polarization fraction fLf_L.

Search for the Decay Bs0→η′ηB_s^0 \rightarrow η^\prime η

In the Standard Model (SM) charmless hadronic decays Bs0→η′ηB_s^0 \rightarrow η^\prime η proceed via tree-level b→ub\to u and penguin b→sb\to s transitions. Penguin transitions are sensitive to Beyond-the-Standard-Model (BSM) physics scenarios and could affect the branching fractions and {\it CP} asymmetries in such decays. Once branching fractions for two-body decays Bs→ηη,ηη′,η′η′B_s \to ηη, ηη^{\prime}, η^{\prime}η^{\prime} are measured, and the theoretical uncertainties are reduced, it would be possible to extract {\it CP} violating parameters from the data using the formalism based on SU(3)/U(3) symmetry. To achieve this goal, at least four of these six branching fractions need to be measured. Only the branching fraction for Bs0→η′η′B_s^0 \to η^{\prime}η^{\prime} has been measured so far.

Studies of the semileptonic Bˉ0→D∗+ℓ−νˉℓ\bar B^0\to D^{*+}\ell^-\barν_\ell and B−→D0ℓ−νˉℓB^-\to D^{0}\ell^-\barν_\ell decay processes with 34.6 fb−1^{-1} of Belle II data

We report measurements of the Bˉ0→D∗+ℓ−νˉl\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*+} \ell^{-} \barν_l and B−→D0ℓ−νˉlB^- \to D^{0} \ell^{-} \barν_l processes using 34.6 fb−1^{-1} of collision events recorded by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^+ e^- collider. For the B−→D0ℓ−νˉℓB^-\to D^{0}\ell^-\barν_\ell channel, we present first studies that isolate this decay from other semileptonic processes and backgrounds. We report a measurement of the Bˉ0→D∗+ℓ−νˉl\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*+} \ell^{-} \barν_l branching fraction and obtain B(Bˉ0→D∗+ℓ−νˉl)=(4.60±0.05stat±0.17syst±0.45πs)%{\cal B}(\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*+} \ell^{-} \barν_l) = \left(4.60 \pm 0.05_{\mathrm{stat}}\pm0.17_{\mathrm{syst}} \pm 0.45_{π_s}\right) \%, in agreement with the world average. Here, the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and related to slow pion reconstruction, respectively. The systematic uncertainties are limited by the statistics of auxiliary measurements and will improve in the future. We also report differential branching fractions in five bins of the hadronic recoil parameter ww for Bˉ0→D∗+ℓ−νˉl\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*+} \ell^{-} \barν_l, unfolded to account for resolution and efficiency effects.

Measurement of the integrated luminosity of the Phase 2 data of the Belle II experiment

From April to July 2018, a data sample at the peak energy of the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance was collected with the Belle~II detector at the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider. The branching fraction is measured to be B(B0→ηη)=(7.6−2.3−1.6+2.7+1.4)×10−7\mathcal{B}(B^{0} \to ηη) = (7.6^{+2.7 +1.4}_{-2.3 -1.6}) \times 10^{-7} at the level of 3.3 standard deviations above zero, which provides the first evidence for the decay B0→ηηB^{0} \to ηη.

Measurement of CPCP asymmetry in the D0→KS0KS0D^{0} \to K^0_S K^0_S decay at Belle

We report a measurement of the time-integrated CPCP asymmetry in the neutral charm meson decay D0→KS0KS0D^0 \to K^0_S K^0_S using 921~fb−1^{-1} data collected at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) and Υ(5S)Υ(5S) resonances with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^+e^- collider. The observed asymmetry is ACP(D0→KS0KS0)=(−0.02±1.53±0.17)%, A_{CP}(D^0 \to K^0_S K^0_S) = (-0.02 \pm 1.53 \pm 0.17) \%, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This latter uncertainty is dominated by the error of the normalisation channel. The result is consistent with Standard Model expectations and improves the uncertainty with respect to previous measurement of this quantity by more than a factor of three.

We present the first measurement of the Michel parameters ηˉ\barη and ξκξκ in the radiative leptonic decay of the ττ lepton using 703 fb−1\mathrm{b}^{-1} of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e−e^+e^- collider. The preliminary values of the measured Michel parameters are ηˉ=−2.0±1.5±0.8\barη = -2.0 \pm 1.5 \pm 0.8 and ξκ=0.6±0.4±0.2ξκ= 0.6 \pm 0.4 \pm 0.2, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic.

We report the first measurement of the ττ lepton polarization in the decay Bˉ→D∗τ−νˉτ{\bar B} \rightarrow D^* τ^- {\barν_τ} as well as a new measurement of the ratio of the branching fractions R(D∗)=B(Bˉ→D∗τ−νˉτ)/B(Bˉ→D∗ℓ−νˉℓ)R(D^{*}) = \mathcal{B}({\bar B} \rightarrow D^* τ^- {\barν_τ}) / \mathcal{B}({\bar B} \rightarrow D^* \ell^- {\barν_{\ell}}), where ℓ−\ell^- denotes an electron or a muon, with the decays τ−→π−νττ^- \rightarrow π^- ν_τ and τ−→ρ−νττ^- \rightarrow ρ^- ν_τ. We use the full data sample of 772×106772 \times 10^6 BBˉB{\bar B} pairs accumulated with the Belle detector at the KEKB electron-positron collider. Our preliminary results, R(D∗)=0.276±0.034(stat.)−0.026+0.029(syst.)R(D^*) = 0.276 \pm 0.034{\rm (stat.)} ^{+0.029} _{-0.026}{\rm (syst.)} and Pτ=−0.44±0.47(stat.)−0.17+0.20(syst.)P_τ = -0.44 \pm 0.47 {\rm (stat.)} ^{+0.20} _{-0.17} {\rm (syst.)}, are consistent with the theoretical predictions of the Standard Model within 0.60.6 standard deviation.

Observation of Transverse Λ/ΛˉΛ/\barΛ Hyperon Polarization in e+e−e^+e^- Annihilation at Belle

We report the first observation of the polarization of Λ/ΛˉΛ/\barΛ hyperons transverse to its production plane in e+e−e^+e^- annihilation. We observe a significant polarization that rises with the fractional energy carried by the hyperon as well as its transverse momentum. To define the production plane, we use the direction of the hyperon momentum together with either the thrust axis in the event or the momentum vector of a hadron in the opposite hemisphere. Furthermore, we investigate the contributions to the hyperon polarization from the feed-down from Σ0/Σˉ0Σ^0/\barΣ^0 and Λc±Λ_c^{\pm} decays. This measurement uses a dataset of 800.4fb−1^{-1} collected by the Belle experiment at or near a center-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV.

We report results on the studies of the e+e−→Bs(∗)Bˉs(∗)e^+e^-\to B_s^{(*)}\bar{B}_s^{(*)} processes. The results are based on a 121.4121.4 fb−1^{-1} data sample collected with the Belle detector at the center-of-mass energy near the Υ(10860)Υ(10860) peak and 16.416.4 fb−1^{-1} of data collected at 19 energy points in the range from 10.77 to 11.02 GeV. We observe a clear e+e−→Υ(10860)→Bs(∗)Bˉs(∗)e^+e^-\toΥ(10860)\to B_s^{(*)}\bar{B}_s^{(*)} signal, with no statistically significant signal of e+e−→Υ(11020)→Bs(∗)Bˉs(∗)e^+e^-\to Υ(11020)\to B_s^{(*)}\bar{B}_s^{(*)}. Study of χ_{bJ}(1P) Properties in the Radiative Υ(2S) Decays

We report a study of radiative decays of χ_{bJ}(1P)(J=0,1,2) mesons into 74 hadronic final states comprising charged and neutral pions, kaons, protons; out of these, 41 modes are observed with at least 5 standard deviation significance. Our measurements not only improve the previous measurements by the CLEO Collaboration but also lead to first observations in many new modes. The large sample allows us to probe the total decay width of the χ_{b0}(1P). In the absence of a statistically significant result, a 90% confidence-level upper limit is set on the width at Γ_{total}< 2.4 MeV. Our results are based on 24.7 fb^{-1} of e+e- collision data recorded by the Belle detector at the Υ(2S) resonance, corresponding to (157.8\pm3.6)\times10^6 Υ(2S) decays.

Measurement of Azimuthal Modulations in the Cross-Section of Di-Pion Pairs in Di-Jet Production from Electron-Positron Annihilation

We present an extraction of azimuthal correlations between two pairs of charged pions detected in opposite jets from electron-positron annihilation. These correlations may arise from the dependence of the di-pion fragmentation on the polarization of the parent quark in the process e+e−→qqˉe^+e^- \rightarrow q \bar{q}. Due to the correlation of the quark polarizations, the cross-section of di-pion pair production, in which the pion pairs are detected in opposite jets in a dijet event, exhibits a modulation in the azimuthal angles of the planes containing the hadron pairs with respect to the production plane. The measurement of this modulation allows access to combinations of fragmentation functions that are sensitive to the quark's transverse polarization and helicity. Within our uncertainties we do not observe a significant signal from the previously unmeasured helicity dependent fragmentation function G1⊥G_1^\perp. This measurement uses a dataset of 938~fb−1^{-1} collected by the Belle experiment at or near s≈10.58\sqrt{s}\approx10.58 GeV.

Measurement of the amplitude ratio of B0→D0K∗0B^0 \to D^0K^{*0} and B0→D0ˉK∗0B^0 \to \bar{D^0}K^{*0} decays with a model-independent Dalitz plot analysis using D→KS0π+π−D\to K_S^0π^+π^- decays

We report a measurement of the amplitude ratio rSr_S of B0→D0K∗0B^0 \to D^0K^{*0} and B0→D0ˉK∗0B^0 \to \bar{D^0}K^{*0} decays with a model-independent Dalitz plot analysis using D→KS0π+π−D\to K_S^0π^+π^- decays. Using the full data sample of 772×106772\times10^6 BBˉB\bar{B} pairs collected at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at KEKB accelerator the upper limit is rS<0.87r_S < 0.87 at the 68 % confidence level. This result is the first measurement of rSr_S with a model-independent Dalitz analysis, and is consistent with results from other analyses. The value of rSr_S indicates the sensitivity of the decay to ϕ3ϕ_3 because the statistical uncertainty is proportional to 1/rS1/r_S. The rSr_S result is obtained from observables (x±x_\pm, y±y_\pm) \begin{eqnarray} x_- &=& +0.4 ^{+1.0 +0.0}_{-0.6 -0.1} \pm0.0 \\ y_- &=& -0.6 ^{+0.8 +0.1}_{-1.0 -0.0} \pm0.1 \\ x_+ &=& +0.1 ^{+0.7 +0.0}_{-0.4 -0.1} \pm0.1 \\ y_+ &=& +0.3 ^{+0.5 +0.0}_{-0.8 -0.1} \pm0.1 \\ , \end{eqnarray} where x±=rScos⁡(δS±ϕ3)x_\pm = r_S \cos(δ_S \pm ϕ_3), y±=rSsin⁡(δS±ϕ3)y_\pm = r_S \sin(δ_S \pm ϕ_3) and ϕ3(δS)ϕ_3 (δ_S) are the weak (strong) phase difference between B0→D0K∗0B^0 \to D^0K^{*0} and B0→D0ˉK∗0B^0 \to \bar{D^0}K^{*0}. The first uncertainty is statistical, the second is the experimental systematic and the third is the systematic due to the uncertainties on cic_i and sis_i parameters measured by CLEO.

Interface-dependent magnetotransport properties for thin Pt films on ferrimagnetic Y3Fe5O12

We have studied magnetoresistance and Hall effects for 1.8-nm-thick Pt films grown on a ferrimagnetic insulator Y3Fe5O12 in a wide temperature (0.46-300 K) and magnetic-field (-15-15 T) region. In the low-temperature regime where quantum corrections to conductivity are observed, weak antilocalization behavior observed in Pt films is critically suppressed when the film is attached to Y3Fe5O12. Hall resistance in the Pt film is also affected by Y3Fe5O12, and it exhibits logarithmic temperature dependence in a broad temperature range. The magnetotransport properties in the high-field range are significantly influenced by the interface between Pt and Y3Fe5O12.

Measurement of the branching fraction of B+→τ+ντB^+ \to τ^+ ν_τ decays with the semileptonic tagging method and the full Belle data sample

We report a measurement of the branching fraction of B+→τ+ντB^+ \to τ^+ ν_τ decays using a data sample of 772×106BBˉ772 \times 10^6 B \bar{B} pairs, collected at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^+e^- collider. We reconstruct the accompanying BB meson in a semileptonic decay and detect the B+→τ+ντB^+ \to τ^+ ν_τ candidate in the recoiling event. We obtain a branching fraction of B(B+→τ+ντ)=[1.25±0.28(stat.)±0.27(syst.)]×10−4{\cal B}(B^+ \to τ^+ ν_τ) = [1.25 \pm 0.28 ({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.27({\rm syst.})] \times 10^{-4}. This result is in good agreement with previous measurements and the expectation from calculations based on the Standard Model.

Longitudinal Spin Seebeck Effect Free from the Proximity Nernst Effect

This letter provides evidence for intrinsic longitudinal spin Seebeck effects (LSSEs) that are free from the anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) caused by an extrinsic proximity effect. We report the observation of LSSEs in Au/Y3Fe5O12 (YIG) and Pt/Cu/YIG systems, showing that LSSE appears even when the mechanism of the proximity ANE is clearly removed. In the conventional Pt/YIG structure, furthermore, we separate the LSSE from the ANE by comparing the voltages in different magnetization and temperature-gradient configurations; the ANE contamination was found to be negligibly small even in the Pt/YIG structure.

Spin mixing conductance at a well-controlled platinum/yttrium iron garnet interface

A platinum (Pt)/yttrium iron garnet (YIG) bilayer system with a well-controlled interface has been developed; spin mixing conductance at the Pt/YIG interface has been studied. Crystal perfection at the interface is experimentally demonstrated to contribute to large spin mixing conductance. The spin mixing conductance is obtained to be 1.3×1018m−21.3\times10^{18} \rm{m^{-2}} at the well-controlled Pt/YIG interface, which is close to a theoretical prediction.

Spin Hall Magnetoresistance Induced by a Non-Equilibrium Proximity Effect

We report anisotropic magnetoresistance in Pt|Y3Fe5O12 bilayers. In spite of Y3Fe5O12 being a very good electrical insulator, the resistance of the Pt layer reflects its magnetization direction. The effect persists even when a Cu layer is inserted between Pt and Y3Fe5O12, excluding the contribution of induced equilibrium magnetization at the interface. Instead, we show that the effect originates from concerted actions of the direct and inverse spin Hall effects and therefore call it "spin Hall magnetoresistance."

Acoustic spin pumping: Direct generation of spin currents from sound waves in Pt/Y3Fe5O12 hybrid structures

Using a Pt/Y3Fe5O12 (YIG) hybrid structure attached to a piezoelectric actuator, we demonstrate the generation of spin currents from sound waves. This "acoustic spin pumping" (ASP) is caused by the sound wave generated by the piezoelectric actuator, which then modulates the distribution function of magnons in the YIG layer and results in a pure-spin-current injection into the Pt layer across the Pt/YIG interface. In the Pt layer, this injected spin current is converted into an electric voltage due to the inverse spin-Hall effect (ISHE). The ISHE voltage induced by the ASP is detected by measuring voltage in the Pt layer at the piezoelectric resonance frequency of the actuator coupled with the Pt/YIG system. The frequency-dependent measurements enable us to separate the ASP-induced signals from extrinsic heating effects. Our model calculation based on the linear response theory provides us with a qualitative and quantitative understanding of the ASP in the Pt/YIG system.
