Strangeness Enhancement due to String Fluctuations

We study string fragmentation in high multiplicity proton-proton collisions in a model where the string tension fluctuates. These fluctuations produce exponential pion spectra which are fitted to the transverse momentum distributions of charged particles for different multiplicities. For each multiplicity the so obtained hadronic slope parameter defines the magnitude of the string fluctuations which in turn determines the produced ratio of strange to light quarks. PYTHIA string decay simulations are used to convert each ratio of strange to light quarks to the appropriate ratio of strange hadrons to pions.

Heavy quarkonium in saturated environment of high-multiplicity pp collisions

High-multiplicity pp collisions exhibit features, traditionally associated with nuclear effects. Coherence motivates to treat high-multiplicity pp, pA and AA collisions on an equal footing. We rely on the phenomenological parametrization for mean multiplicities of light hadrons and J/psi, assuming their linear dependence on N_{coll} in pA collisions. The results of this approach underestimate the recently measured production rate of J/psi at very high hadronic multiplicities. The linear dependence of J/psi multiplicity on N_{coll} is subject to predicted nonlinear corrections, related to mutual boosting of the saturation scales in colliding dense parton clouds. A parameter-free calculation of the non-linear corrections allows to explain data for pT-integrated yield of J/psi at high hadronic multiplicities. Calculations are in a good accord with data binned in several pT-intervals as well. As was predicted, Upsilon and J/psi are equally suppressed at forward rapidities in pA collisions. Consequently, their fractional multiplicities at forward rapidities in pp collisions are equal as well, and their magnitude agrees with data.

J/Psi in high-multiplicity pp collisions: lessons from pA

Gluons at small x in high-energy nuclei overlap in the longitudinal direction, so the nucleus acts as a single source of gluons, like higher Fock components in a single nucleon, which contribute to inelastic collisions with a high multiplicity of produced hadrons. This similarity helps to make a link between nuclear effects in pA and high-multiplicity pp collisions. Such a relation is well confirmed by data for the J/Psi production rate in high-multiplicity pp events measured recently in the ALICE experiment. Broadening of J/Psi transverse momentum is predicted for high-multiplicity pp collisions.

Universal Centrality Dependence of Particle Multiplicities in Heavy-Ion Collisions

Starting from the light-cone plasma (LCP) distribution of gluons produced in proton-proton collisions, we derive the invariant charged-particle yield dN/dyd^2pT in heavy-ion collisions. Multiple scattering of partons in the other nucleus leads to pT broadening, which depends on the centrality of the collision. The resulting change of the LCP parameters determines the distributions of charged particles. The charged-particle multiplicity dN/deta at eta=0 normalized to the number of participating nucleons has a universal centrality dependence, common to RHIC and LHC. This universal increase is of geometrical origin. Such a universality can be broken by the energy dependent coherence effect, shadowing and mutual boosting of the saturation scales. However, we found these effects to essentially compensate each other, leaving the centrality dependence of multiplicity approximately universal.

Light-Cone QCD Plasma

We deduce the maximum-entropy state of partons created in proton-proton and nucleus-nucleus collisions. This state is characterized by a distribution function n(x,pT) depending on the light-cone fraction x and the transverse momentum pT of forward or backward particles, respectively. The mean transverse momentum <pT> determines the single parameter of the maximum entropy distribution which is constrained by the sum of all light-cone momentum fractions being unity. The total multiplicity is related to the transverse area of the colliding Lorentz-contracted hadrons. Assuming parton-hadron duality we can compare the model to data from RHIC and LHC.

Mutual boosting of the saturation scales in colliding nuclei

Saturation of small-x gluons in a nucleus, which has the form of transverse momentum broadening of projectile gluons in pA collisions in the nuclear rest frame, leads to a modification of the parton distribution functions in the beam compared with pp collisions. The DGLAP driven gluon distribution turns out to be suppressed at large x, but significantly enhanced at x<<1. This is a high twist effect. In the case of nucleus-nucleus collisions all participating nucleons on both sides get enriched in gluon density at small x, which leads to a further boosting of the saturation scale. We derive reciprocity equations for the saturation scales corresponding to a collision of two nuclei. The solution of these equations for central collisions of two heavy nuclei demonstrate a significant, up to several times, enhancement of Q_{sA}^2, in AA compared with pA collisions.

QCD-Thermodynamics using 5-dim Gravity

We calculate the critical temperature and free energy of the gluon plasma using the dilaton potential arXiv:0911.0627[hep-ph] in the gravity theory of AdS/QCD. The finite temperature observables are calculated in two ways: first, from the Page-Hawking computation of the free energy, and secondly using the Bekenstein-Hawking proportionality of the entropy with the area of the horizon. Renormalization is well defined, because the T=0 theory has asymptotic freedom. We further investigate the change of the critical temperature with the number of flavours induced by the change of the running coupling constant in the quenched theory. The finite temperature behaviour of the speed of sound, spatial string tension and vacuum expectation value of the Polyakov loop follow from the corresponding string theory in AdS_5.

Trouble Finding the Optimal AdS/QCD

In the bottom-up approach to AdS/QCD based on a five-dimensional gravity dilaton action the exponential of the dilaton field is usually identified as the strong or 't Hooft coupling. There is currently no model known which fits the measurements of the running coupling and lattice results for pressure at the same time. With a one parametric toy model we demonstrate the effect of fitting the pressure on the coupling and vice versa.

A New Approach to the Gluon Structure Function

We calculate the gluon structure function of a color dipole in a new approach evaluating the matrix elements of SU(2) gluon field operators separated along a direction close to the light cone. As vacuum state in the pure glue sector, we use a variational ground state of the near-light-cone Hamiltonian. With a mean momentum fraction of the gluons fixed to the "experimental value" in a proton, the resulting gluon structure function for a dipole state with four links is compared qualitatively to the NLO \emph{MRST} 2002 parameterization at $Q^2=1.5 \mathrm{GeV}^2$.

Heavy quarkonium production: Nontrivial transition from pA to AA collisions

Two novel QCD effects, double color filtering and mutual boosting of the saturation scales in colliding nuclei, affect the transparency of the nuclei for quark dipoles in comparison with proton-nucleus collisions. The former effect increases the survival probability of the dipoles, since color filtering in one nucleus makes the other one more transparent. The second effect acts in the opposite direction and is stronger, it makes the colliding nuclei more opaque than in the case of pA collisions. As a result of parton saturation in nuclei the effective scale is shifted upwards, what leads to an increase of the gluon density at small x. This in turn leads to a stronger transverse momentum broadening in AA compared with pA collisions, i.e. to an additional growth of the saturation momentum. Such a mutual boosting leads to a system of reciprocity equations, which result in a saturation scale, a few times higher in AA than in pA collisions at the energies of LHC. Since the dipole cross section is proportional to the saturation momentum squared, the nuclei become much more opaque for dipoles in AA than in pA collisions. For the same reason gluon shadowing turns out to be boosted to a larger magnitude compared with the product of the gluon shadowing factors in each of the colliding nuclei. All these effects make it more difficult to establish a baseline for anomalous J/Psi suppression in heavy ion collisions at high energies.

Jet Evolution in the Quark-Gluon Plasma from RHIC to the LHC

The observed suppression of high-$p_\perp$ hadrons allows different explanations. We discuss two possible scenarios: In scenario 1, parton energy loss from scattering in the hot medium is complemented by final state interactions in the resonance matter. Scenario 2 has an enhanced transport parameter $\hat q$ which is fitted to RHIC data. For LHC, the two scenarios lead to very different predictions for the nuclear modification factor of hadrons. In addition, jet reconstruction allows more specific tests of the mechanisms responsible for jet quenching. We calculate the distribution of partons inside a jet and find different results for the two scenarios.

Phenomenology of AdS/QCD and Its Gravity Dual

We construct the dilaton potential in the gravity dual theory of AdS/QCD for the warp factor of Refs.{1,2}. Using this AdS_5-metric with properties similar to QCD, we find that the gravity dual leads to a meaningful gauge coupling in the region between the charmonium and bottonium mass, but differs slightly from QCD in the extreme UV. When we fix the ultraviolet behavior in accord with the beta-function, we can obtain good agreement with the overall heavy quark-antiquark potential. Although the leading order proportional to -α^{4/3}/r differs from perturbative QCD, the full potential agrees quite well with the short distance QCD potential in NNLO.

Thermodynamics of AdS/QCD within the 5D dilaton-gravity model

We calculate the pressure, entropy density, trace anomaly and speed of sound of the gluon plasma using the dilaton potential of Ref. arXiv:0911.0627[hep-ph] in the dilaton-gravity theory of AdS/QCD. The finite temperature observables are calculated from the Black Hole solutions of the Einstein equations, and using the Bekenstein-Hawking equality of the entropy with the area of the horizon. Renormalization is well defined, because the T=0 theory has asymptotic freedom. Comparison with lattice simulations is made.

An Approach towards a Constituent Quark Model on the Light Cone

We use the vacuum expectation value of a Wegner-Wilson loop representing a fast moving quark-antiquark pair to derive the light cone Hamiltonian for a $q\bar q$ meson. We solve the corresponding Schrödinger equation for various trial wave functions. The result shows how confinement determines the meson mass and wave function for valence quarks on the light cone. We also parametrize the effect of the spin-dependent splitting for a light meson and charmonium. The correct chiral-symmetry breaking pattern for the pion mass is obtained due to the self-energy of the quark.

Gluon Structure Function of a Color Dipole in the Light-Cone Limit of Lattice QCD

We calculate the gluon structure function of a color dipole in near-light-cone SU(2) lattice QCD as a function of $x_B$. The quark and antiquark are external non-dynamical degrees of freedom which act as sources of the gluon string configuration defining the dipole. We compute the color dipole matrix element of transversal chromo-electric and chromo-magnetic field operators separated along a direction close to the light cone, the Fourier transform of which is the gluon structure function. As vacuum state in the pure glue sector, we use a variational ground state of the near-light-cone Hamiltonian. We derive a recursion relation for the gluon structure function on the lattice similar to the perturbative DGLAP equation. It depends on the number of transversal links assembling the Schwinger string of the dipole. Fixing the mean momentum fraction of the gluons to the "experimental value" in a proton, we compare our gluon structure function for a dipole state with four links with the NLO \emph{MRST} 2002 and the \emph{CTEQAB-0} parameterizations at $Q^2=1.5 \mathrm{GeV}^2$. Within the systematic uncertainty we find rather good agreement. We also discuss the low $x_B$ behavior of the gluon structure function in our model calculation.

QCD Evolution of Jets in the Quark-Gluon Plasma

The quark-gluon plasma (QGP) can be explored in relativistic heavy ion collisions by the jet quenching signature, i.e. by the energy loss of a high energy quark or gluon traversing the plasma. We introduce a novel QCD evolution formalism in the leading logarithm approximation, where normal parton radiation is interleaved with scattering on the plasma gluons occuring at a similar time scale. The idea is elaborated in two approaches. One extends the DGLAP evolution equations for fragmentation functions to include scatterings in the medium, which facilitates numerical solutions for comparison with data and provides a basis for a Monte Carlo implementation. The other approach is more general by including also the transverse momentum dependence of the jet evolution, which allows a separation of the scales also for the scattering term and provides a basis for analytical investigations. The two approaches are shown to be related and give the same characteristic softening of the jet depending on the temperature of the plasma. A substantial effect is found at the RHIC energy and is further enhanced at LHC. Systematic studies of data on the energy loss could, therefore, demonstrate the existence of the QGP and probe its properties.

Transverse Momentum Broadening in Semi-inclusive DIS on Nuclei

Using a three stage model of hadron formation we calculate the change of the transverse momentum distribution of hadrons produced in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) on nuclei. In the first stage after its interaction with the virtual photon, the struck quark propagates quasi free in the nuclear environment undergoing multiple collisions with nucleons. During this stage it can acquire transverse momentum. In the second stage a prehadron is formed which has a very small elastic cross section with the nucleons. In the third stage the prehadron turns into a hadron. For HERMES energies, prehadron elastic scatterings contribute little to $p_\perp$-broadening. The acquired extra $Δp_\perp^2$ of hadrons can therefore be deduced entirely from the first stage of quasi free quark propagation with quark-nucleon collisions. We use this model to describe $π$-production on Ne, Kr, Xe and compare with the most recent HERMES preliminary data.

Direct photons and dileptons via color dipoles

Drell-Yan dilepton pair production and inclusive direct photon production can be described within a unified framework in the color dipole approach. The inclusion of non-perturbative primordial transverse momenta and DGLAP evolution is studied. We successfully describe data for dilepton spectra from 800-GeV pp collisions, inclusive direct photon spectra for pp collisions at RHIC energies $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV, and for $p\bar{p}$ collisions at Tevatron energies $\sqrt{s}=1.8$ TeV, in a formalism that is free from any extra parameters.

S-Matrix Unitarity, Impact Parameter Profiles, Gluon Saturation and High-Energy Scattering

A model combining perturbative and non-perturbative QCD is developed to compute high-energy reactions of hadrons and photons and to investigate saturation effects that manifest the S-matrix unitarity. Following a functional integral approach, the S-matrix factorizes into light-cone wave functions and the universal amplitude for the scattering of two color-dipoles which are represented by Wegner-Wilson loops. In the framework of the non-perturbative stochastic vacuum model of QCD supplemented by perturbative gluon exchange, the loop-loop correlation is calculated and related to lattice QCD investigations. With a universal energy dependence motivated by the two-pomeron (soft + hard) picture that respects the unitarity condition in impact parameter space, a unified description of pp, pip, Kp, gamma* p, and gamma gamma reactions is achieved in good agreement with experimental data for cross sections, slope parameters, and structure functions. Impact parameter profiles for pp and longitudinal gamma* p reactions and the gluon distribution of the proton xG(x,Q^2,b) are calculated and found to saturate in accordance with S-matrix unitarity. The c.m. energies and Bjorken x at which saturation sets in are determined.

Target Fragmentation in $pp$, $ep$ and $γp$ Collisions at High Energies

We calculate target fragmentation in $p p \to n X$ and $γp \to n X $ reactions in the meson cloud picture of the nucleon. The $p p \to n X$ reaction is used to fix the $pnπ^+$ form factor for three different models. We take into account the possible destruction of the residual neutron by the projectile. Using the form factor from the hadronic reaction we calculate photoproduction and small $x_{Bj}$ electroproduction of forward neutrons at HERA. Here the $q \bar q$ dipoles in the photon can rescatter on the residual neutron. In photoproduction we observe slightly less absorption than in the hadronic reaction. For deep inelastic events ($Q^2>10$ GeV$^2$) screening is weaker but still present at large $Q^2$. The signature for this absorptive rescattering is a shift of the $dσ/dE_n$ distribution to higher neutron energies for photofragmentation.

Soft and Hard Pomeron in the Structure Function of the Proton at Low x and Low Q^2

We study inclusive electroproduction on the proton at low $x$ and low $Q^2$ using a soft and a hard Pomeron. The contribution of the soft Pomeron is based on the Stochastic Vacuum Model, in which a nonperturbative dipole-dipole cross section can be calculated by means of a gauge invariant gluon field strength correlator. To model the hard Pomeron exchange we phenomenologically extend the leading order evolution of a power-behaved structure function, $F_2 \propto x^{- λ}$, proposed by López and Ynduráin. This extension allows to consider both the case $Q^2 = 0$ and the region of higher $Q^2$ on the basis of the same parametrization. A good simultaneous fit to the data on $F_2$ and on the cross section $σ_{γp}$ of real photoproduction is obtained for $λ=0.37$. With four parameters we achieve a $χ^2/\textrm{d.o.f.} = 0.98$ for 222 data points. In addition, we use our model of the inclusive $γ^{\ast} p$ interaction to compute the longitudinal structure function $F_L$.
