A search for feebly-interacting particles in BB decays with missing energy at Belle

We present a search for an invisible hidden-sector particle Xinv X_{\rm{inv}}, produced in B0→Dˉ0XinvB^0 \to \bar{D}^0 X_{\rm{inv}} and B±→hXinvB^\pm\to h X_{\rm{inv}} decays, where h=π±h = π^\pm, K±K^\pm, Ds±D_{s}^\pm, p±p^\pm. The search is performed using e+e−e^+ e^- collision data recorded with the Belle detector, corresponding to 711~fb−1^{-1}. No significant signal is observed. We set 90\% confidence level upper limits ranging between 10−410^{-4} and 10−610^{-6} on the branching fraction B(B→hXinv)\mathcal{B}(B \to h X_{\rm{inv}}) as a function of mXinvm_{ X_{\rm{inv}}}. Corresponding limits are set on B(B→hX)×B(X→γγ)\mathcal{B}(B \to hX)\times\mathcal{B}(X\toγγ) for lifetimes cτXcτ_X between 10 μ10~μm and 10 m. Many of these limits are the first direct constraints on their respective decays. Our results provide the most stringent exclusion limits to date on the branching fractions for all search channels, and exclude previously unexplored regions of parameter space relevant to several new physics models.

Amplitude analysis and branching fraction measurement of J/ψ→ΛΣˉ0η+c.cJ/ψ\to Λ\barΣ^0η+\mathrm{c.c}

Based on a sample of (10087±44)×106(10087\pm44)\times10^{6} J/ψJ/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector, a partial-wave analysis of J/ψ→ΛΣˉ0η+c.c J/ψ\to Λ\bar{ Σ}^0η+\mathrm{c.c} is performed for the first time. The dominant contributions are found to be excited ΛΛ states with JP=1/2−J^P=1/2^- and JP=1/2+J^P=1/2^+ in the ηΛηΛ mass spectra. The measured masses and widths are M=1668.8±3.1±21.2M=1668.8\pm3.1\pm21.2 MeV/c2c^2 and Γ=52.7±4.2±17.8Γ=52.7\pm4.2\pm17.8 MeV for the Λ(1670)Λ(1670), and M=1881.5±16.5±20.3M=1881.5\pm16.5\pm20.3 MeV/c2c^2 and Γ=82.4±18.2±8.9Γ=82.4\pm18.2\pm8.9 MeV for the Λ(1810)Λ(1810), respectively. The branching fraction is determined to be B(J/ψ→ΛΣˉ0η+c.c) \mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to Λ\bar{ Σ}^0η+\mathrm{c.c}) = (3.44±0.11±0.13)×10−5(3.44 \pm 0.11 \pm 0.13) \times 10^{-5}. The first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic.

Cross section measurement of e+e−→π0π0ψ(3686)e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow π^{0}π^{0}ψ(3686) from s=\sqrt{s}= 4.008 GeV to 4.951 GeV

Using data samples with a total integrated luminosity of 22.1 fb−122.1~\rm fb^{-1} at center-of-mass energies between 4.008 and 4.951~GeV collected with the BESIII detector, the cross sections of e+e−→π0π0ψ(3686)e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow π^{0}π^{0}ψ(3686) process are measured. The obtained cross sections are found to be approximately one-half of those of e+e−→π+π−ψ(3686)e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow π^{+}π^{-}ψ(3686), consistent with the isospin symmetry expectation. A coherent fit to the dressed cross sections is performed, with the Y(4230)Y(4230)~parameters fixed at the values measured in e+e−→π+π−ψ(3686)e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow π^{+}π^{-}ψ(3686). The significances of the Y(4390)Y(4390) and Y(4660)Y(4660) are both larger than 5σ5σ, and their masses and widths are consistent with the previous measurement in the e+e−→π+π−ψ(3686)e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow π^{+}π^{-}ψ(3686) process.

First Measurement of the Absolute Branching Fraction of ηc→γγη_c \to γγ

We apply a tag-and-probe method to precisely measure the absolute branching fraction of the decay ηc→γγη_c \to γγ with the BESIII experiment at BEPCII. Starting with a large initial sample of 2712.4±14.32712.4\pm 14.3 million ψ(3686)ψ(3686) events, a sample of 0.16 million ηcη_c events are tagged via the golden channel ψ(3686)→π0hcψ(3686)\to π^0 h_c, hc→γηch_c\to γη_c, effectively avoiding interference effects. The absolute branching fraction of ηc→γγη_c \to γγ is measured for the first time to be B(ηc→γγ)=(2.45±0.48stat.±0.09syst.)×10−4\mathcal{B}(η_c \to γγ) = (2.45 \pm 0.48_{\rm stat.} \pm 0.09_{\rm syst.}) \times 10^{-4}. Using the world average value of the total width of the ηcη_c, the partial decay width of ηc→γγη_c \to γγ is calculated to be Γ(ηc→γγ)=(7.48±1.48stat.±0.30syst.) keVΓ(η_c \to γγ) = (7.48 \pm 1.48_{\rm stat.} \pm 0.30_{\rm syst.})~{\rm keV}.

First Observation of D0(+)→Kˉωe+νeD^{0(+)}\to \bar Kωe^+ν_e and Determination of the Branching Fraction of Kˉ1(1270)→Kˉω\bar K_1(1270)\to \bar K ω

Using 20.3~fb−1^{-1} of e+e−e^+e^- annihilation data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773~GeV with the BESIII detector, we report the first observation of the semileptonic decays D0→K−ωe+νeD^0\to K^-ωe^+ν_e and D+→KS0ωe+νeD^+\to K_S^0ωe^+ν_e with significances of 8.0σ8.0σ and 5.8σ5.8σ, respectively, including systematic uncertainties. Their decay branching fractions are measured to be B(D0→K−ωe+νe)=(9.3−1.9+2.1±0.7)×10−5{\cal B}(D^0\to K^-ωe^+ν_e)=(9.3^{+2.1}_{-1.9}\pm 0.7)\times10^{-5} and B(D+→KS0ωe+νe)=(6.6−1.8+2.0±0.6)×10−5{\cal B}(D^+\to K_S^0ωe^+ν_e)=(6.6^{+2.0}_{-1.8}\pm 0.6)\times10^{-5}. Combining with the latest measurements of D0(+)→K−π+π−(0)e+νeD^{0(+)}\to K^-π^+π^{-(0)} e^+ν_e and assuming Kˉ1(1270)\bar{K}_1(1270) to be the sole mediating resonance in all processes, the branching ratios are determined to be Γ(K1(1270)−→K−π+π−)Γ(K1(1270)−→K−ω)=3.4−0.7+0.8±0.3\frac{Γ(K_1(1270)^-\to K^-π^+π^-)}{Γ(K_1(1270)^-\to K^-ω)} = 3.4^{+0.8}_{-0.7} \pm 0.3 and Γ(Kˉ1(1270)0→K−π+π0)Γ(Kˉ1(1270)0→Kˉ0ω)=9.6−2.7+3.0±0.8\frac{Γ(\bar{K}_1(1270)^0\to K^-π^+π^0)}{Γ(\bar{K}_1(1270)^0\to \bar{K}^0ω)} = 9.6^{+3.0}_{-2.7} \pm 0.8. The combined branching fraction is determined to be B(Kˉ1(1270)→Kˉω)=(7.5±1.3±0.5)%\mathcal B(\bar{K}_1(1270)\to \bar{K}ω) = (7.5\pm 1.3 \pm 0.5)\%, which is the most precise measurement from a collider experiment. The first uncertainties are statistical, and the second are systematic.

Measurements of the absolute branching fractions of the Λc+Λ_{c}^{+} hadronic decays

Based on 4.5 fb−1^{-1} of e+e−e^+e^- collision data collected at center-of-mass energies between 4599.53 MeV and 4698.82 MeV with the BESIII detector, the absolute branching fractions of twelve Λc+Λ_{c}^{+} hadronic decay modes are measured with a double-tag technique. A global least-square fit is implemented simultaneously among different decay modes at different energy points. This paper gives the most precise results on the branching fractions of different decay modes to date, with precision improved by a factor of 2 to 3. Among them, the branching fraction of Λc+→pK−π+Λ_{c}^{+}\to pK^{-}π^+ is determined to be (6.61±0.11±0.12)%(6.61\pm0.11\pm0.12)\%, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. In addition, the e+e−→Λc+Λˉc−e^+e^-\toΛ_c^+\barΛ_c^- Born cross sections and the effective form factors (∣Geff∣|G_{\rm eff}|) at different energy points have been determined with the highest precision to date.

Search for an Axion-Like Particle in B→K(∗)a(→γγ)B\rightarrow K^{(*)} a (\rightarrowγγ) Decays at Belle

We report a search for an axion-like particle aa in B→K(∗)a(→γγ)B\rightarrow K^{(*)} a (\rightarrowγγ) decays using data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy electron-positron collider. The search is based on a 711fb−1711 \mathrm{fb^{-1}} data sample collected at the Υ4SΥ4S resonance energy, corresponding to a sample of 772×106772\times10^6 Υ4SΥ4S events. In this study, we search for the decay of the axion-like particle into a pair of photons, a→γγa \rightarrow γγ. We scan the two-photon invariant mass in the range 0.16 GeV/c2−4.50 GeV/c20.16\ \mathrm{GeV/}c^2-4.50\ \mathrm{GeV}/c^2 for the KK modes and 0.16 GeV/c2−4.20 GeV/c20.16\ \mathrm{GeV/}c^2-4.20\ \mathrm{GeV}/c^2 for the K∗K^{*} modes. No significant signal is observed in any of the modes, and 90\% confidence level upper limits are established on the coupling to the WW boson, gaWg_aW, as a function of aa mass. The limits range from 3×10−6GeV−13 \times 10^{-6} \mathrm{GeV}^{-1} to 3×10−5GeV−13 \times 10^{-5} \mathrm{GeV}^{-1}, improving the current constraints on gaWg_aW by a factor of two over the most stringent previous experimental results.

Investigation of the ΔI=1/2ΔI = 1/2 rule and test of CP violation through the measurement of decay asymmetry parameters in Ξ−Ξ^- decays

Using (10087±44)×106(10087\pm44)\times 10^{6} J/ψJ/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector, numerous Ξ−Ξ^- and ΛΛ decay asymmetry parameters are simultaneously determined from the process J/ψ→Ξ−Ξˉ+→Λ(pπ−)π−Λˉ(nˉπ0)π+J/ψ\to Ξ^- \barΞ^+ \to Λ(pπ^-) π^- \barΛ(\bar{n} π^0) π^+ and its charge-conjugate channel. The precisions of α0α_0 for Λ→nπ0Λ\to nπ^0 and αˉ0\barα_0 for Λˉ→nˉπ0\barΛ \to \bar{n}π^0 compared to world averages are improved by factors of 4 and 1.7, respectively. The ratio of decay asymmetry parameters of Λ→nπ0Λ\to nπ^0 to that of Λ→pπ−Λ\to pπ^-, ⟨α0⟩/⟨αΛ−⟩\langle α_0 \rangle/ \langle α_{Λ-} \rangle , is determined to be 0.873±0.012−0.010+0.011 0.873 \pm 0.012^{+0.011}_{-0.010}, where the first and the second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The ratio is smaller than unity more than 5σ5σ, which signifies the existence of the ΔI=3/2ΔI = 3/2 transition in ΛΛ for the first time. Beside, we test for CP violation in Ξ−→Λπ−Ξ^- \to Λπ^- and in Λ→nπ0Λ\to n π^{0} with the best precision to date.

Search for hidden-charm tetraquark with strangeness in e+e−→K+Ds∗−D∗0+c.c.e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow K^+ D_{s}^{*-} D^{*0}+c.c.

We report a search for a heavier partner of the recently observed Zcs(3985)−Z_{cs}(3985)^{-} state, denoted as Zcs′−Z_{cs}^{\prime -}, in the process e+e−→K+Ds∗−D∗0+c.c.e^{+} e^{-}\rightarrow K^{+}D_{s}^{*-}D^{* 0}+c.c., based on e+e−e^+e^- collision data collected at the center-of-mass energies of s=4.661\sqrt{s}=4.661, 4.682 and 4.699 GeV with the BESIII detector. The Zcs′−Z_{cs}^{\prime -} is of interest as it is expected to be a candidate for a hidden-charm and open-strange tetraquark. A partial-reconstruction technique is used to isolate K+K^+ recoil-mass spectra, which are probed for a potential contribution from Zcs′−→Ds∗−D∗0Z_{cs}^{\prime -}\to D_{s}^{*-}D^{* 0} (c.c.c.c.). We find an excess of Zcs′−→Ds∗−D∗0Z_{cs}^{\prime -}\rightarrow D_{s}^{*-}D^{*0} (c.c.c.c.) candidates with a significance of 2.1σ2.1σ, after considering systematic uncertainties, at a mass of (4123.5±0.7stat.±4.7syst.) MeV/c2(4123.5\pm0.7_\mathrm{stat.}\pm4.7_\mathrm{syst.})\ \mathrm{MeV}/c^{2}. As the data set is limited in size, the upper limits are evaluated at the 90\% confidence level on the product of the Born cross sections (σBornσ^{\mathrm{Born}}) and the branching fraction (B\mathcal{B}) of Zcs′−→Ds∗−D∗0Z_{cs}^{\prime-}\rightarrow D_{s}^{*-}D^{* 0}, under different assumptions of the Zcs′−Z_{cs}^{\prime -} mass from 4.120 to 4.140 MeV and of the width from 10 to 50 MeV at the three center-of-mass energies. The upper limits of σBorn⋅Bσ^{\rm Born}\cdot\mathcal{B} are found to be at the level of O(1)\mathcal{O}(1) pb at each energy. Larger data samples are needed to confirm the Zcs′−Z_{cs}^{\prime -} state and clarify its nature in the coming years.

Cross section measurements of the processes e+e−→ωπ0e^+e^- \rightarrow ωπ^{0} and ωηωη at center-of-mass energies between 3.773 and 4.701 GeV

The Born cross sections of the processes e+e−→ωπ0e^+e^- \rightarrow ωπ^{0} and e+e−→ωηe^+e^- \rightarrow ωη are measured at center-of-mass energies between 3.773 and 4.701 GeV using a total integrated luminosity of 22.7 fb−1^{-1} collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider. The Λc+→pK−e+νeΛ_c^+\rightarrow pK^-e^+ν_e decay is observed with a significance of 8.2σ8.2σ and the branching fraction is measured to be B(Λc+→pK−e+νe)=(0.88±0.17stat.±0.07syst.)×10−3\mathcal{B}(Λ_c^+\rightarrow pK^- e^+ν_e)=(0.88\pm0.17_{\rm stat.}\pm0.07_{\rm syst.})\times 10^{-3}. Measurement of e+e−→K+K−π0e^{+}e^{-} \to K^{+}K^{-}π^{0} cross section and observation of a resonant structure

Based on e+e−e^{+}e^{-} collision data collected by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider at center-of-mass energies from 2.000 to 3.080 GeV, a partial-wave analysis is performed for the process e+e−→K+K−π0e^{+}e^{-} \to K^{+}K^{-}π^{0}. The Born cross section of the process e+e−→K+K−π0e^{+}e^{-} \to K^{+}K^{-}π^{0} and its subprocesses e+e−→ϕπ0e^{+}e^{-} \to ϕπ^{0}, K∗(892)KK^{*}(892)K and K2∗(1430)KK^{*}_{2}(1430)K are measured. The results for e+e−→K+K−π0e^{+}e^{-} \to K^{+}K^{-}π^{0} and ϕπ0ϕπ^{0} are consistent with the BaBar measurements and with improved precision. By analyzing the cross section, of the subprocesses e+e−→e^{+}e^{-} \to K∗(892)KK^{*}(892)K and K2∗(1430)KK^{*}_{2}(1430)K, a structure with mass MRM_R = (2208 ±\pm 19 ±\pm 24) MeV/c2c^{2} and width ΓRΓ_R = (168 ±\pm 24 ±\pm 39) MeV is observed with a combined statistical significance of 7.6σσ. The measured resonance parameters suggest it can be identified as the ϕ(2170)ϕ(2170), thus the results provide valuable input to understand the internal nature of this state.

Measurement of ΛΛ baryon polarization in e+e−→ΛΛˉe^+e^-\rightarrowΛ\barΛ at s=3.773\sqrt{s} = 3.773 GeV

Using a data sample of ψ(3770)ψ(3770) events collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.9 fb−1^{-1}, we report a measurement of ΛΛ spin polarization in e+e−→ΛΛˉe^+e^-\rightarrowΛ\barΛ at s=3.773\sqrt{s} = 3.773 GeV. The significance of polarization is found to be 2σσ including the systematic uncertainty, which implies a zero phase between the transition amplitudes of the ΛΛˉΛ\barΛ helicity states. This phase can be interpreted in terms of psionic form factors, and is determined to be ΔΦΨΔΦ^Ψ = ΦEΨ−ΦMΨΦ^Ψ_{E} - Φ^Ψ_{M} = (71−46+66(71^{+66}_{-46} ±\pm 5)∘^{\circ}. Similarly, the ratio between the form factors is found to be RψR^ψ = ∣GEΨ/GMΨ∣|G^Ψ_{E}/G^Ψ_{M}| = 0.48−0.07+0.120.48^{+0.12}_{-0.07} ±\pm 0.04. The first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic.

Measurement of the D→K−π+π+π−D \to K^-π^+π^+π^- and D→K−π+π0D \to K^-π^+π^0 coherence factors and average strong-phase differences in quantum-correlated DDˉ{D\bar{D}} decays

The decays D→K−π+π+π−D\to K^-π^+π^+π^- and D→K−π+π0D \to K^-π^+π^0 are studied in a sample of quantum-correlated DDˉD\bar{D} pairs produced through the process e+e−→ψ(3770)→DDˉe^+e^- \to ψ(3770) \to D\bar{D}, exploiting a data set collected by the BESIII experiment that corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.93 fb−1^{-1}. Here DD indicates a quantum superposition of a D0D^0 and a Dˉ0\bar{D}^0 meson. By reconstructing one neutral charm meson in a signal decay, and the other in the same or a different final state, observables are measured that contain information on the coherence factors and average strong-phase differences of each of the signal modes. These parameters are critical inputs in the measurement of the angle γγ of the Unitarity Triangle in B−→DK−B^- \to DK^- decays at the LHCb and Belle II experiments. The coherence factors are determined to be RK3π=0.52−0.10+0.12R_{K3π}=0.52^{+0.12}_{-0.10} and RKππ0=0.78±0.04R_{Kππ^0}=0.78 \pm 0.04, with values for the average strong-phase differences that are δDK3π=(167−19+31)∘δ_D^{K3π}=\left(167^{+31}_{-19}\right)^\circ and δDKππ0=(196−15+14)∘δ_D^{Kππ^0}=\left(196^{+14}_{-15}\right)^\circ, where the uncertainties include both statistical and systematic contributions. The analysis is re-performed in four bins of the phase-space of the D→K−π+π+π−D \to K^-π^+π^+π^- to yield results that will allow for a more sensitive measurement of γγ with this mode, to which the BESIII inputs will contribute an uncertainty of around 6∘^\circ.

Using 2.93 fb−12.93\,\rm fb^{-1} of e+e−e^+e^- collision data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773\,GeV with the BESIII detector, we present a measurement of the branching fraction of the doubly Cabibbo-suppressed (DCS) decay D0→K+π−π0D^0\to K^+π^-π^0 and a search for the DCS decay D0→K+π−π0π0D^0\to K^+π^-π^0π^0. The branching fraction of D0→K+π−π0D^0\to K^+π^-π^0 is determined to be [3.13−0.56+0.60(stat)±0.09(syst)]×10−4[3.13^{+0.60}_{-0.56}({\rm stat}) \pm 0.09({\rm syst})] \times 10^{-4}. No signal is observed for D0→K+π−π0π0D^0\to K^+π^-π^0π^0 and an upper limit of 3.6×10−43.6 \times 10^{-4} is set on the branching fraction at the 90\% C.L. Measurement of the total and leptonic decay widths of the J/ψJ/ψ resonance with an energy scan method at BESIII

Using e+e−e^+e^- annihilation data sets collected with the BESIII detector, we measure the cross sections of the processes e+e−→e+e−e^+e^- \to e^+e^- and e+e−→μ+μ−e^+e^- \to μ^+μ^- at fifteen center-of-mass energy points in the vicinity of the J/ψJ/ψ resonance. By a simultaneous fit to the measured, center-of-mass energy dependent cross sections of the two processes, the combined quantities ΓeeΓee/ΓtotΓ_{ee} Γ_{ee} / Γ_{\rm tot} and ΓeeΓμμ/ΓtotΓ_{ee} Γ_{μμ} / Γ_{\rm tot} are determined to be (0.346±0.0090.346 \pm 0.009) and (0.335±0.0060.335 \pm 0.006) keV, respectively, where ΓeeΓ_{ee}, ΓμμΓ_{μμ}, and ΓtotΓ_{\rm tot} are the electronic, muonic, and total decay widths of the J/ψJ/ψ resonance, respectively. Using the resultant ΓeeΓμμ/ΓtotΓ_{ee} Γ_{μμ} / Γ_{\rm tot} and ΓeeΓee/ΓtotΓ_{ee} Γ_{ee} / Γ_{\rm tot}, the ratio Γee/ΓμμΓ_{ee} / Γ_{μμ} is calculated to be 1.031±0.0151.031 \pm 0.015, which is consistent with the expectation of lepton universality within about two standard deviations. Assuming lepton universality and using the branching fraction of the J/ψJ/ψ leptonic decay measured by BESIII in 2013, ΓtotΓ_{\rm tot} and ΓllΓ_{ll} are determined to be (93.0±2.193.0 \pm 2.1) and (5.56±0.115.56 \pm 0.11) keV, respectively, where ΓllΓ_{ll} is the average leptonic decay width of the J/ψJ/ψ resonance.

For the first time, resonance structure is observed in the cross section line shape of e+e−→π+π−ψ2(3823)e^+e^-\to π^+π^-ψ_2(3823) with significances exceeding 5σ5σ. A fit to data with two coherent Breit-Wigner resonances modeling the s\sqrt{s}-dependent cross section yields M(R1)=4406.9±17.2±4.5M(R_1)=4406.9\pm 17.2\pm 4.5 MeV/c2c^2, Γ(R1)=128.1±37.2±2.3Γ(R_1)=128.1\pm 37.2\pm 2.3 MeV, and M(R2)=4647.9±8.6±0.8M(R_2)=4647.9\pm 8.6\pm 0.8 MeV/c2c^2, Γ(R2)=33.1±18.6±4.1Γ(R_2)=33.1\pm 18.6\pm 4.1 MeV. Though weakly disfavored by the data, a single resonance with M(R)=4417.5±26.2±3.5M(R)=4417.5\pm26.2\pm3.5 MeV/c2c^2, Γ(R)=245±48±13Γ(R)=245\pm48\pm13 MeV is also possible to interpret data. The branching fraction of Λc+→nπ+Λ_{c}^{+} \to nπ^{+} is measured to be (6.6±1.2stat±0.4syst)×10−4(6.6\pm1.2_{\rm stat}\pm0.4_{\rm syst})\times 10^{-4}. By taking the upper limit of branching fractions of Λc+→pπ0Λ_{c}^{+} \to pπ^0 from the Belle experiment, the ratio of branching fractions between Λc+→nπ+Λ_{c}^{+} \to nπ^{+} and Λc+→pπ0Λ_{c}^{+} \to pπ^0 is calculated to be larger than 7.2 at the 90% confidence level, which disagrees with the current predictions of available phenomenological models. In addition, the branching fractions of the Cabibbo-favored decays Λc+→Λπ+Λ_{c}^{+} \to Λπ^{+} and Λc+→Σ0π+Λ_{c}^{+} \to Σ^{0}π^{+} are measured to be (1.31±0.08stat±0.05syst)×10−2(1.31\pm0.08_{\rm stat}\pm0.05_{\rm syst})\times 10^{-2} and (1.22±0.08stat±0.07syst)×10−2(1.22\pm0.08_{\rm stat}\pm0.07_{\rm syst})\times 10^{-2}, respectively, which are consistent with previous results.

The Born cross sections of e+e−→Σ0Σˉ0e^{+}e^{-}\to Σ^{0}\barΣ^{0} are measured at center-of-mass energies from 2.38642.3864 to 3.02003.0200 GeV using data samples with an integrated luminosity of 328.5328.5 pb−1^{-1} collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider. Weak phases and CP-symmetry tests in sequential decays of entangled double-strange baryons

Using a sample of 1.31×1091.31\times10^9 J/ψJ/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector at the electron-positron collider BEPCII, we analyse the full J/ψ→J/ψ\to Ξ−Ξ‾+Ξ^-\overlineΞ^+, Ξ−→Λπ−Ξ^-\to Λπ^-, Λ→pπ−Λ\to pπ^-, Ξ‾+→Λ‾π+\overlineΞ^+\to\overlineΛπ^+, Λ‾→p‾π+\overlineΛ\to\overline{p}π^+ decay chain. A new method, exploiting the fact that the Ξ−Ξ‾+Ξ^-\overlineΞ^+ pair is entangled and sequentially decaying, and where the complete decay chains are reconstructed, is applied for the first time. This enables precision measurements of the decay parameters for the Ξ−→Λπ−Ξ^-\toΛπ^- decay (αΞα_Ξ, ϕΞϕ_Ξ) as well as the Ξ‾+→Λ‾π+\overlineΞ^+\to\overlineΛπ^+ decay (α‾Ξ\overlineα_Ξ, ϕ‾Ξ\overlineϕ_Ξ). From the decay parameters, two independent CP tests were performed, quantified by the observables ACPΞA_{\rm CP}^Ξ and ΔϕΞΔϕ_Ξ. Our results, ACPΞA_{\rm CP}^Ξ = (6.0±13.4±5.6)×10−3(6.0\pm13.4\pm5.6)\times10^{-3} and ΔϕΞ=(−4.8±13.7±2.9)×10−3 radΔϕ_Ξ= (-4.8\pm13.7\pm2.9)\times10^{-3}~{\rm rad}, are consistent with CP symmetry. Furthermore, our method enables a separation of strong and weak Ξ→ΛπΞ\toΛπ decay amplitudes. This results in the first direct measurement of the weak phase difference for any baryon decay. The result is found to be (ξP−ξS)=(1.2±3.4±0.8)×10−2(ξ_{P} - ξ_{S}) = (1.2\pm3.4\pm0.8)\times10^{-2} rad and is one of the most precise tests of CP symmetry for strange baryons. The strong phase difference is measured to be (δP−δS)=(−4.0±3.3±1.7)×10−2(δ_P - δ_S) = (-4.0\pm3.3\pm1.7)\times10^{-2} rad. In addition, we provide an independent measurement of the recently debated ΛΛ decay parameter, αΛ=0.757±0.011±0.008α_Λ = 0.757 \pm 0.011 \pm 0.008 . The ΛΛ‾Λ\overlineΛ asymmetry is measured to be ACPΛ=(−3.7±11.7±9.0)×10−3A_{\rm CP}^Λ = (-3.7\pm11.7\pm9.0)\times10^{-3}.

Σ+Σ^{+} and Σˉ−\barΣ^- polarization in the J/ψJ/ψ and ψ(3686)ψ(3686) decays

From 1310.6×1061310.6\times10^{6} J/ψJ/ψ and 448.1×106448.1\times10^{6} ψ(3686)ψ(3686) events collected with the BESIII experiment, we report the first observation of Σ+Σ^{+} and Σˉ−\barΣ^{-} spin polarization in e+e−→J/ψ(ψ(3686))→Σ+Σˉ−e^+e^-\rightarrow J/ψ(ψ(3686)) \rightarrow Σ^{+} \barΣ^{-} decays. The relative phases of the form factors ΔΦΔΦ have been measured to be (−15.5±0.7±0.5)∘(-15.5\pm0.7\pm0.5)^{\circ} and (21.7±4.0±0.8)∘(21.7\pm4.0\pm0.8)^{\circ} with J/ψJ/ψ and ψ(3686)ψ(3686) data, respectively. The non-zero value of ΔΦΔΦ allows for a direct and simultaneous measurement of the decay asymmetry parameters of Σ+→pπ0 (α0=−0.998±0.037±0.009)Σ^{+}\rightarrow p π^{0}~(α_0 = -0.998\pm0.037\pm0.009) and Σˉ−→pˉπ0 (αˉ0=0.990±0.037±0.011)\barΣ^{-}\rightarrow \bar{p} π^{0}~(\barα_0 = 0.990\pm0.037\pm0.011), the latter value being determined for the first time. The average decay asymmetry, (α0−αˉ0)/2(α_{0} - \barα_{0})/2, is calculated to be −0.994±0.004±0.002-0.994\pm0.004\pm0.002. The CP asymmetry ACP,Σ=(α0+αˉ0)/(α0−αˉ0)=−0.004±0.037±0.010A_{\rm CP,Σ} = (α_0 + \barα_0)/(α_0 - \barα_0) = -0.004\pm0.037\pm0.010 is extracted for the first time, and is found to be consistent with CP conservation.

Analysis of the decay D0→KS0K+K−D^0\rightarrow K_{S}^{0} K^{+} K^{-}

Using a data sample of 2.93 fb−12.93~fb^{-1} of e+e−e^+e^- collisions collected at s=3.773GeV\sqrt{s}=3.773 GeV in the BESIII experiment, we perform an analysis of the decay D0→KS0K+K−D^0\rightarrow K_{S}^{0} K^{+} K^{-}. The Dalitz plot is analyzed using 1856±451856\pm 45 flavor-tagged signal decays. We find that the Dalitz plot is well described by a set of six resonances: a0(980)0a_0(980)^0, a0(980)+a_0(980)^+, ϕ(1020)ϕ(1020), a2(1320)+a_2(1320)^+, a2(1320)−a_2(1320)^- and a0(1450)−a_0(1450)^-. Their magnitudes, phases and fit fractions are determined as well as the coupling of a0(980)a_0(980) to KKˉK\bar{K}, gKKˉ=3.77±0.24(stat.)±0.35(sys.)GeVg_{K\bar{K}}=3.77\pm 0.24\text{(stat.)}\pm0.35\text{(sys.)} GeV. The branching fraction of the decay D0→KS0K+K−D^0\rightarrow K_{S}^{0} K^{+} K^{-} is measured using 11660±11811660\pm 118 untagged signal decays to be (4.51±0.05(stat.)±0.16(sys.))10−3(4.51\pm 0.05\text{(stat.)}\pm 0.16\text{(sys.)})10^{-3}. Cross section measurement of e+e−→η′J/ψe^+e^- \rightarrow η'J/ψ from s=4.178\sqrt{s} = 4.178 to 4.6004.600 GeV

The cross section of the process e+e−→η′J/ψe^+e^- \rightarrow η'J/ψ is measured at center-of-mass energies from s=\sqrt{s} = 4.178 to 4.600 GeV using data samples corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 11 fb−1^{-1} collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring. The dependence of the cross section on s\sqrt{s} shows an enhancement around 4.24.2 GeV. While the shape of the cross section cannot be fully explained with a single ψ(4160)ψ(4160) or ψ(4260)ψ(4260) state, a coherent sum of the two states does provide a reasonable description of the data.

Determination of strong-phase parameters in D→KS,L0π+π−D\rightarrow K^0_{S,L}π^+π^-

We report the most precise measurements to date of the strong-phase parameters between D0D^0 and Dˉ0\bar{D}^0 decays to KS,L0π+π−K^0_{S,L}π^+π^- using a sample of 2.93 fb−1^{-1} of e+e−e^+e^- annihilation data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. Our results provide the key inputs for a binned model-independent determination of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa angle γ/ϕ3γ/ϕ_3 with BB decays. Using our results, the decay model sensitivity to the γ/ϕ3γ/ϕ_3 measurement is expected to be between 0.7∘^{\circ} and 1.2∘^{\circ}, approximately a factor of three smaller than that achievable with previous measurements. The improved precision of this work ensures that measurements of γ/ϕ3γ/ϕ_3 will not be limited by knowledge of strong phases for the next decade. Furthermore, our results provide critical input for other flavor-physics investigations, including charm mixing, other measurements of CPCP violation, and the measurement of strong-phase parameters for other DD-decay modes.

Erratum to "Measurement of the e+e−→π+π−e^+e^-\toπ^+π^- cross section between 600 and 900 MeV using initial state radiation"

In Phys. Lett. B 753, 629-638 (2016) [arXiv:1507.08188] the BESIII collaboration published a cross section measurement of the process e+e−→π+π−e^+e^-\to π^+ π^- in the energy range between 600 and 900 MeV. In this erratum we report a corrected evaluation of the statistical errors in terms of a fully propagated covariance matrix. The correction also yields a reduced statistical uncertainty for the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, which now reads as aμππ,LO(600−900 MeV)=(368.2±1.5stat±3.3syst)×10−10a_μ^{ππ\mathrm{, LO}}(600 - 900\,\mathrm{MeV}) = (368.2 \pm 1.5_{\rm stat} \pm 3.3_{\rm syst})\times 10^{-10}. The central values of the cross section measurement and of aμππ,LOa_μ^{ππ\mathrm{, LO}}, as well as the systematic uncertainties remain unchanged.

Future Physics Programme of BESIII

There has recently been a dramatic renewal of interest in the subjects of hadron spectroscopy and charm physics. This renaissance has been driven in part by the discovery of a plethora of charmonium-like XYZXYZ states at BESIII and BB factories, and the observation of an intriguing proton-antiproton threshold enhancement and the possibly related X(1835)X(1835) meson state at BESIII, as well as the threshold measurements of charm mesons and charm baryons. We present a detailed survey of the important topics in tau-charm physics and hadron physics that can be further explored at BESIII over the remaining lifetime of BEPCII operation. This survey will help in the optimization of the data-taking plan over the coming years, and provides physics motivation for the possible upgrade of BEPCII to higher luminosity.

Inclusive charged and neutral particle multiplicity distributions in χcJχ_{cJ} and J/ψJ/ψ decays

Using a sample of 106 million ψ(3686)ψ(3686) decays, ψ(3686)→γχcJ(J=0,1,2)ψ(3686) \to γχ_{cJ} (J = 0, 1, 2) and ψ(3686)→γχcJ,χcJ→γJ/ψψ(3686) \to γχ_{cJ}, χ_{cJ} \to γJ/ψ (J=1,2)(J = 1, 2) events are utilized to study inclusive χcJ→χ_{cJ} \to anything, χcJ→χ_{cJ} \to hadrons, and J/ψ→J/ψ\to anything distributions, including distributions of the number of charged tracks, electromagnetic calorimeter showers, and π0π^0s, and to compare them with distributions obtained from the BESIII Monte Carlo simulation. Information from each Monte Carlo simulated decay event is used to construct matrices connecting the detected distributions to the input predetection "produced" distributions. Assuming these matrices also apply to data, they are used to predict the analogous produced distributions of the decay events. Using these, the charged particle multiplicities are compared with results from MARK I. Further, comparison of the distributions of the number of photons in data with those in Monte Carlo simulation indicates that G-parity conservation should be taken into consideration in the simulation.

Measurement of proton electromagnetic form factors in e+e−→ppˉe^+e^- \to p\bar{p} in the energy region 2.00-3.08 GeV

The process of e+e−→ppˉe^+e^- \rightarrow p\bar{p} is studied at 22 center-of-mass energy points (s\sqrt{s}) from 2.00 to 3.08 GeV, exploiting 688.5~pb−1^{-1} of data collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider. The Born cross section~(σppˉσ_{p\bar{p}}) of e+e−→ppˉe^+e^- \rightarrow p\bar{p} is measured with the energy-scan technique and it is found to be consistent with previously published data, but with much improved accuracy. In addition, the electromagnetic form-factor ratio (∣GE/GM∣|G_{E}/G_{M}|) and the value of the effective (∣Geff∣|G_{\rm{eff}}|), electric (∣GE∣|G_E|) and magnetic (∣GM∣|G_M|) form factors are measured by studying the helicity angle of the proton at 16 center-of-mass energy points. ∣GE/GM∣|G_{E}/G_{M}| and ∣GM∣|G_M| are determined with high accuracy, providing uncertainties comparable to data in the space-like region, and ∣GE∣|G_E| is measured for the first time. We reach unprecedented accuracy, and precision results in the time-like region provide information to improve our understanding of the proton inner structure and to test theoretical models which depend on non-perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics.

The statistical significances are 12.9σ12.9σ and 7.7σ7.7 σ, respectively. The precision of B(D0→ωπ+π−)\mathcal{B}(D^0 \to ωπ^+π^-) is improved by a factor of 2.1 over the CLEO measurement, and B(D+→ωπ+π0)\mathcal{B}(D^+ \to ωπ^+π^0) is measured for the first time. Measurement of the cross section for e+e−→Ξ−Ξˉ+e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrowΞ^{-}\barΞ^{+} and observation of an excited ΞΞ baryon

Using a total of 11.0 fb−1^{-1} of e+e−e^{+}e^{-} collision data with center-of-mass energies between 4.009 GeV and 4.6 GeV and collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII, we measure fifteen exclusive cross sections and effective form factors for the process e+e−→Ξ−Ξˉ+e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrowΞ^{-}\barΞ^{+} by means of a single baryon-tag method. After performing a fit to the dressed cross section of e+e−→Ξ−Ξˉ+e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrowΞ^{-}\barΞ^{+}, no significant ψ(4230)ψ(4230) or ψ(4260)ψ(4260) resonance is observed in the Ξ−Ξˉ+Ξ^{-}\barΞ^{+} final states, and upper limits at the 90\% confidence level on ΓeeBΓ_{ee}\mathcal{B} for the processes ψ(4230)ψ(4230)/ψ(4260)→Ξ−Ξˉ+ψ(4260)\rightarrowΞ^{-}\barΞ^{+} are determined. In addition, an excited ΞΞ baryon at 1820 MeV/c2c^{2} is observed with a statistical significance of 6.2 ∼\sim 6.5σσ by including the systematic uncertainty, and the mass and width are measured to be M=(1825.5±4.7±4.7)M = (1825.5 \pm 4.7 \pm 4.7)~MeV/c2c^{2} and Γ=(17.0±15.0±7.9)Γ= (17.0 \pm 15.0 \pm 7.9)~MeV, which confirms the existence of the JP=32−J^{P}=\frac{3}{2}^{-} state Ξ(1820)Ξ(1820).

Model-independent determination of the relative strong-phase difference between D0D^0 and Dˉ0→KS,L0π+π−\bar{D}^0\rightarrow K^0_{S,L}π^+π^- and its impact on the measurement of the CKM angle γ/ϕ3γ/ϕ_3

Crucial inputs for a variety of CPCP-violation studies can be determined through the analysis of pairs of quantum-entangled neutral DD mesons, which are produced in the decay of the ψ(3770)ψ(3770) resonance. The relative strong-phase parameters between D0D^0 and Dˉ0\bar{D}^0 in the decays D0→KS,L0π+π−D^0\rightarrow K^0_{S,L}π^+π^- are studied using 2.93~fb−1{\rm fb}^{-1} of e+e−e^+e^- annihilation data delivered by the BEPCII collider and collected by the BESIII detector at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV. Results are presented in regions of the phase space of the decay. These are the most precise measurements to date of the strong-phase parameters in D→KS,L0π+π−D \to K_{S,L}^0π^+π^- decays. Using these parameters, the associated uncertainty on the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa angle γ/ϕ3γ/ϕ_3 is expected to be between 0.7∘0.7^\circ and 1.2∘1.2^\circ, for an analysis using the decay B±→DK±B^{\pm}\rightarrow DK^{\pm}, D→KS0π+π−D\rightarrow K^0_Sπ^+π^-, where DD represents a superposition of D0D^0 and D0ˉ\bar{D^0} states. This is a factor of three smaller than that achievable with previous measurements. Furthermore, these results provide valuable input for charm-mixing studies, other measurements of CPCP violation, and the measurement of strong-phase parameters for other DD-decay modes.

Observation of a cross-section enhancement near mass threshold in e+e−→ΛΛˉe^{+}e^{-}\rightarrowΛ\barΛ

The process e+e−→ΛΛˉe^{+}e^{-}\rightarrowΛ\barΛ is studied using data samples at s=2.2324\sqrt{s}=2.2324, 2.400, 2.800 and 3.080 GeV collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider. The Born cross section is measured at s\sqrt{s}=2.2324 GeV, which is 1.0 MeV above the ΛΛˉΛ\barΛ mass threshold, to be 305±45−36+66305\pm45^{+66}_{-36} pb, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The substantial cross section near threshold is significantly larger than that expected from theory, which predicts the cross section to vanish at threshold. The Born cross sections at s\sqrt{s}=2.400, 2.800 and 3.080 GeV are measured and found to be consistent with previous experimental results, but with improved precision. Finally, the corresponding effective electromagnetic form factors of ΛΛ are deduced.

Observation of a resonant structure in e+e−→ωηe^{+}e^{-} \to ωη and another in e+e−→ωπ0e^{+}e^{-} \to ωπ^{0} at center-of-mass energies between 2.00 and 3.08 GeV

Born cross sections for the processes e+e−→ωηe^+e^- \to ωη and e+e−→ωπ0e^+e^- \to ωπ^{0} have been determined for center-of-mass energies between 2.00 and 3.08 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. The results obtained in this work are consistent with previous measurements but with improved precision. Two resonant structures are observed. In the e+e−→ωηe^{+}e^{-} \to ωη cross sections, a resonance with a mass of (2179±21±3)MeV/c2(2179 \pm 21 \pm 3)\text{MeV}/c^2 and a width of (89±28±5)MeV(89 \pm 28 \pm 5)\text{MeV} is observed with a significance of 6.1σσ. The simultaneous observation of the ϕ(1680)ϕ(1680) and X(1750)X(1750) indicates that the X(1750)X(1750), with previous observations in photoproduction, is distinct from the ϕ(1680)ϕ(1680). Precise Measurements of Branching Fractions for Ds+D_s^+ Meson Decays to Two Pseudoscalar Mesons

We measure the branching fractions for seven Ds+D_{s}^{+} two-body decays to pseudo-scalar mesons, by analyzing data collected at s=4.178∼4.226\sqrt{s}=4.178\sim4.226 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. The branching fractions are determined to be B(Ds+→K+η′)=(2.68±0.17±0.17±0.08)×10−3\mathcal{B}(D_s^+\to K^+η^{\prime})=(2.68\pm0.17\pm0.17\pm0.08)\times10^{-3}, B(Ds+→η′π+)=(37.8±0.4±2.1±1.2)×10−3\mathcal{B}(D_s^+\toη^{\prime}π^+)=(37.8\pm0.4\pm2.1\pm1.2)\times10^{-3}, B(Ds+→K+η)=(1.62±0.10±0.03±0.05)×10−3\mathcal{B}(D_s^+\to K^+η)=(1.62\pm0.10\pm0.03\pm0.05)\times10^{-3}, B(Ds+→ηπ+)=(17.41±0.18±0.27±0.54)×10−3\mathcal{B}(D_s^+\toηπ^+)=(17.41\pm0.18\pm0.27\pm0.54)\times10^{-3}, B(Ds+→K+KS0)=(15.02±0.10±0.27±0.47)×10−3\mathcal{B}(D_s^+\to K^+K_S^0)=(15.02\pm0.10\pm0.27\pm0.47)\times10^{-3}, B(Ds+→KS0π+)=(1.109±0.034±0.023±0.035)×10−3\mathcal{B}(D_s^+\to K_S^0π^+)=(1.109\pm0.034\pm0.023\pm0.035)\times10^{-3}, B(Ds+→K+π0)=(0.748±0.049±0.018±0.023)×10−3\mathcal{B}(D_s^+\to K^+π^0)=(0.748\pm0.049\pm0.018\pm0.023)\times10^{-3}, where the first uncertainties are statistical, the second are systematic, and the third are from external input branching fraction of the normalization mode Ds+→K+K−π+D_s^+\to K^+K^-π^+. Prompt-delayed γγ-ray spectroscopy of neutron-rich 119,121^{119,121}In isotopes

The fusion and transfer induced fission reaction 9^{9}Be(238^{238}U,~f) with 6.2 MeV/u beam energy, using a unique setup consisting of AGATA, VAMOS++ and EXOGAM detectors, was used to populate through the fission process and study the neutron-rich 119,121^{119,121}In isotopes. This setup enabled the prompt-delayed γγ-ray spectroscopy of isotopes in the time range of 100 ns−200 μs100~\rm{ns} - 200~μ\rm{s}. In the odd-AA 119,121^{119,121}In isotopes, indications of a short half-life 19/2−19/2^{-} isomeric state, in addition to the previously known 25/2+25/2^{+} isomeric state, were observed from the present data. Further, new prompt transitions above the 25/2+25/2^{+} isomer in 121^{121}In were identified along with reevaluation of its half-life. The experimental data were compared with the theoretical results obtained in the framework of large-scale shell-model calculations in a restricted model space. The $\langle πg_{9/2} νh_{11/2};I \arrowvert \hat{\mathcal{H}}\arrowvert πg_{9/2} νh_{11/2};I\rangle$ two-body matrix elements of residual interaction were modified to explain the excitation energies and the B(E2)B(E2) transition probabilities in the neutron-rich In isotopes. The (i) decreasing trend of E(29/2+)−E(25/2+)E(29/2^{+}) - E(25/2^{+}) in odd-In (with dominant configuration πg9/2−1νh11/2−2πg_{9/2}^{-1}νh_{11/2}^{-2} and maximum aligned spin of 29/2+29/2^{+}) and (ii) increasing trend of E(27/2+)−E(23/2+)E(27/2^{+}) - E(23/2^{+}) in odd-Sb (with dominant configuration πg7/2+1νh11/2−2πg_{7/2}^{+1}νh_{11/2}^{-2} and maximum aligned spin of 27/2+27/2^{+}) with increasing neutron number could be understood as a consequence of hole-hole and particle-hole interactions, respectively.

Detection of thermal neutrons with the PRISMA-YBJ array in Extensive Air Showers selected by the ARGO-YBJ experiment

We report on a measurement of thermal neutrons, generated by the hadronic component of extensive air showers (EAS), by means of a small array of EN-detectors developed for the PRISMA project (PRImary Spectrum Measurement Array), novel devices based on a compound alloy of ZnS(Ag) and 6^{6}LiF. This array has been operated within the ARGO-YBJ experiment at the high altitude Cosmic Ray Observatory in Yangbajing (Tibet, 4300 m a.s.l.). Due to the tight correlation between the air shower hadrons and thermal neutrons, this technique can be envisaged as a simple way to estimate the number of high energy hadrons in EAS. Coincident events generated by primary cosmic rays of energies greater than 100 TeV have been selected and analyzed. The EN-detectors have been used to record simultaneously thermal neutrons and the air shower electromagnetic component. The density distributions of both components and the total number of thermal neutrons have been measured. The correlation of these data with the measurements carried out by ARGO-YBJ confirms the excellent performance of the EN-detector.

Observation of an anomalous line shape of the η′π+π−η^{\prime}π^{+}π^{-} mass spectrum near the ppˉp\bar{p} mass threshold in J/ψ→γη′π+π−J/ψ\rightarrowγη^{\prime}π^{+}π^{-}

We use two models to characterize the η′π+π−η^{\prime}π^{+}π^{-} line shape around 1.85 GeV/c21.85~\text{GeV}/c^{2}: one which explicitly incorporates the opening of a decay threshold in the mass spectrum (Flatté formula), and another which is the coherent sum of two resonant amplitudes. Both fits show almost equally good agreement with data, and suggest the existence of either a broad state around 1.85 GeV/c21.85~\text{GeV}/c^{2} with strong couplings to ppˉp\bar{p} final states or a narrow state just below the ppˉp\bar{p} mass threshold. Although we cannot distinguish between the fits, either one supports the existence of a ppˉp\bar{p} molecule-like state or bound state with greater than 7σ7σ significance.

A partial wave analysis shows that the dominant Kˉ∗(892)0\bar K^{*}(892)^{0} component is accompanied by an \emph{S}-wave contribution accounting for (6.05±0.22±0.18)%(6.05\pm0.22\pm0.18)\% of the total rate and that other components are negligible. The parameters of the Kˉ∗(892)0\bar K^{*}(892)^{0} resonance and of the form factors based on the spectroscopic pole dominance predictions are also measured. We also present a measurement of the Kˉ∗(892)0\bar K^{*}(892)^{0} helicity basis form factors in a model-independent way.

4.5 years multi-wavelength observations of Mrk 421 during the ARGO-YBJ and Fermi common operation time

We report on the extensive multi-wavelength observations of the blazar Markarian 421 (Mrk 421) covering radio to gamma-rays, during the 4.5 year period of ARGO-YBJ and Fermi common operation time, from August 2008 to February 2013. In particular, thanks to the ARGO-YBJ and Fermi data, the whole energy range from 100 MeV to 10 TeV is covered without any gap. In the observation period, Mrk 421 showed both low and high activity states at all wavebands. The correlations among flux variations in different wavebands were analyzed. Seven large flares, including five X-ray flares and two GeV gamma-ray flares with variable durations (3-58 days), and one X-ray outburst phase were identified and used to investigate the variation of the spectral energy distribution with respect to a relative quiescent phase. During the outburst phase and the seven flaring episodes, the peak energy in X-rays is observed to increase from sub-keV to few keV. The TeV gamma-ray flux increases up to 0.9-7.2 times the flux of the Crab Nebula. The behavior of GeV gamma-rays is found to vary depending on the flare, a feature that leads us to classify flares into three groups according to the GeV flux variation. Finally, the one-zone synchrotron self-Compton model was adopted to describe the emission spectra. Two out of three groups can be satisfactorily described using injected electrons with a power-law spectral index around 2.2, as expected from relativistic diffuse shock acceleration, whereas the remaining group requires a harder injected spectrum. The underlying physical mechanisms responsible for different groups may be related to the acceleration process or to the environment properties.

Identification of new transitions and mass assignments of levels in 143−153^{143-153}Pr

The previously reported levels assigned to 151,152,153Pr have recently been called into question regarding their mass assignment. The above questioned level assignments are clarified by measuring g-transitions tagged with A and Z in an in-beam experiment in addition to the measurements from 252Cf spontaneous fission (SF) and establish new spectroscopic information from N=84N=84 to N=94N=94 in the Pr isotopic chain. The isotopic chain 143-153Pr has been studied from the spontaneous fission of 252Cf by using Gammasphere and also from the measurement of the prompt g-rays in coincidence with isotopically-identified fission fragments using VAMOS++ and EXOGAM at GANIL. The latter were produced using 238U beams on a 9Be target at energies around the Coulomb barrier. The g-g-g-g data from 252Cf (SF) and those from the GANIL in-beam A- and Z-gated spectra were combined to unambiguously assign the various transitions and levels in 151,152,153Pr and other isotopes. New transitions and bands in 145,147,148,149,150Pr were identified by using g-g-g and g-g-g-g coincidences and A and Z gated g-g spectra. The transitions and levels previously assigned to 151,153Pr have been confirmed by the (A,Z) gated spectra. The transitions previously assigned to 152Pr are now assigned to 151Pr on the basis of the (A,Z) gated spectra. Two new bands with 20 new transitions in 152Pr and one new band with 7 new transitions in 153Pr are identified from the g-g-g-g coincidence spectra and the (A,Z) gated spectrum. In addition, new g-rays are also reported in 143-146Pr. New levels of 145,147-153Pr have been established, reliable mass assignments of the levels in 151,152,153Pr have been reported and new transitions have been identified in 143-146Pr showing the new avenues that are opened by combining the two experimental approaches.

Observation of the Singly Cabibbo-Suppressed Decay D+→ωπ+D^{+}\toωπ^{+} and Evidence for D0→ωπ0D^{0}\toωπ^{0}

Based on 2.93 fb−1^{-1} e+e−e^+e^- collision data taken at center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV by the BESIII detector, we report searches for the singly Cabibbo-suppressed decays D+→ωπ+D^{+}\toωπ^{+} and D0→ωπ0D^{0}\toωπ^{0}. A double tag technique is used to measure the absolute branching fractions B(D+→ωπ+)=(2.79±0.57±0.16)×10−4\mathcal{B}(D^{+}\toωπ^{+})=(2.79\pm0.57\pm0.16)\times 10^{-4} and B(D0→ωπ0)=(1.17±0.34±0.07)×10−4\mathcal{B}(D^{0}\toωπ^{0})=(1.17\pm0.34\pm0.07)\times 10^{-4}, with statistical significances of 5.5σ5.5σ and 4.1σ4.1σ, respectively. We also present measurements of the absolute branching fractions for the related ηπηπ decay modes. We find B(D+→ηπ+)=(3.07±0.22±0.13)×10−3\mathcal{B}(D^{+}\toηπ^{+})=(3.07\pm0.22\pm0.13)\times10^{-3} and B(D0→ηπ0)=(0.65±0.09±0.04)×10−3\mathcal{B}(D^{0}\toηπ^{0})=(0.65\pm0.09\pm0.04)\times10^{-3}, which are consistent with the current world averages. The first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively.

Search for GeV Gamma Ray Bursts with the ARGO-YBJ Detector: Summary of Eight Years of Observations

The search for Gamma Ray Burst (GRB) emission in the energy range 1-100 GeV in coincidence with the satellite detection has been carried out using the Astrophysical Radiation with Ground-based Observatory at YangBaJing (ARGO-YBJ) experiment. The high altitude location (4300 m a.s.l.), the large active surface (∼\sim 6700 m2^2 of Resistive Plate Chambers), the wide field of view (∼2 \sim 2~sr, limited only by the atmospheric absorption) and the high duty cycle (>> 86 %) make the ARGO-YBJ experiment particularly suitable to detect short and unexpected events like GRBs. With the scaler mode technique, i.e., counting all the particles hitting the detector with no measurement of the primary energy and arrival direction, the minimum threshold of ∼\sim 1 GeV can be reached, overlapping the direct measurements carried out by satellites. During the experiment lifetime, from December 17, 2004 to February 7, 2013, a total of 206 GRBs occurring within the ARGO-YBJ field of view (zenith angle θθ ≤\le 45∘^{\circ}) have been analyzed. This is the largest sample of GRBs investigated with a ground-based detector. Two lightcurve models have been assumed and since in both cases no significant excess has been found, the corresponding fluence upper limits in the 1-100 GeV energy region have been derived, with values as low as 10−5 ^{-5}~erg cm−2^{-2}. The analysis of a subset of 24 GRBs with known redshift has been used to constrain the fluence extrapolation to the GeV region together with possible cutoffs under different assumptions on the spectrum.

Study of the diffuse gamma-ray emission from the Galactic plane with ARGO-YBJ

The events recorded by ARGO-YBJ in more than five years of data collection have been analyzed to determine the diffuse gamma-ray emission in the Galactic plane at Galactic longitudes 25° < l < 100° and Galactic latitudes . The energy range covered by this analysis, from ~350 GeV to ~2 TeV, allows the connection of the region explored by Fermi with the multi-TeV measurements carried out by Milagro. Our analysis has been focused on two selected regions of the Galactic plane, i.e., 40° < l < 100° and 65° < l < 85° (the Cygnus region), where Milagro observed an excess with respect to the predictions of current models. Great care has been taken in order to mask the most intense gamma-ray sources, including the TeV counterpart of the Cygnus cocoon recently identified by ARGO-YBJ, and to remove residual contributions. The ARGO-YBJ results do not show any excess at sub-TeV energies corresponding to the excess found by Milagro, and are consistent with the predictions of the Fermi model for the diffuse Galactic emission. From the measured energy distribution we derive spectral indices and the differential flux at 1 TeV of the diffuse gamma-ray emission in the sky regions investigated.

The analog Resistive Plate Chamber detector of the ARGO-YBJ experiment

The ARGO-YBJ experiment has been in stable data taking from November 2007 till February 2013 at the YangBaJing Cosmic Ray Observatory (4300 m a.s.l.). The detector consists of a single layer of Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) ( about 6700 m^2}) operated in streamer mode. The signal pick-up is obtained by means of strips facing one side of the gas volume. The digital readout of the signals, while allows a high space-time resolution in the shower front reconstruction, limits the measurable energy to a few hundred TeV. In order to fully investigate the 1-10 PeV region, an analog readout has been implemented by instrumenting each RPC with two large size electrodes facing the other side of the gas volume. Since December 2009 the RPC charge readout has been in operation on the entire central carpet (about 5800 m^2). In this configuration the detector is able to measure the particle density at the core position where it ranges from tens to many thousands of particles per m^2. Thus ARGO-YBJ provides a highly detailed image of the charge component at the core of air showers. In this paper we describe the analog readout of RPCs in ARGO-YBJ and discuss both the performance of the system and the physical impact on the EAS measurements.

The cosmic ray proton plus helium energy spectrum measured by the ARGO-YBJ experiment in the energy range 3-300 TeV

The ARGO-YBJ experiment is a full-coverage air shower detector located at the Yangbajing Cosmic Ray Observatory (Tibet, People's Republic of China, 4300 m a.s.l.). The high altitude, combined with the full-coverage technique, allows the detection of extensive air showers in a wide energy range and offer the possibility of measuring the cosmic ray proton plus helium spectrum down to the TeV region, where direct balloon/space-borne measurements are available. The detector has been in stable data taking in its full configuration from November 2007 to February 2013. In this paper the measurement of the cosmic ray proton plus helium energy spectrum is presented in the region 3-300 TeV by analyzing the full collected data sample. The resulting spectral index is γ=−2.64±0.01γ= -2.64 \pm 0.01. These results demonstrate the possibility of performing an accurate measurement of the spectrum of light elements with a ground based air shower detector.

The Knee of the Cosmic Hydrogen and Helium Spectrum below 1 PeV Measured by ARGO-YBJ and a Cherenkov Telescope of LHAASO

The measurement of cosmic ray energy spectra, in particular for individual species, is an essential approach in finding their origin. Locating the "knees" of the spectra is an important part of the approach and has yet to be achieved. Here we report a measurement of the mixed Hydrogen and Helium spectrum using the combination of the ARGO-YBJ experiment and of a prototype Cherenkov telescope for the LHAASO experiment. A knee feature at 640+/-87 TeV, with a clear steepening of the spectrum, is observed. This gives fundamental inputs to galactic cosmic ray acceleration models.

Energy Spectrum of Cosmic Protons and Helium Nuclei by a Hybrid Measurement at 4300 m a.s.l

The energy spectrum of cosmic Hydrogen and Helium nuclei has been measured, below the so-called "knee", by using a hybrid experiment with a wide field-of-view Cherenkov telescope and the Resistive Plate Chamber (RPC) array of the ARGO-YBJ experiment at 4300 m above sea level. The Hydrogen and Helium nuclei have been well separated from other cosmic ray components by using a multi-parameter technique. A highly uniform energy resolution of about 25% is achieved throughout the whole energy range (100 TeV - 700 TeV). The observed energy spectrum is compatible with a single power law with index gamma=-2.63+/-0.06.

Identification of the TeV Gamma-ray Source ARGO J2031+4157 with the Cygnus Cocoon

The extended TeV gamma-ray source ARGO J2031+4157 (or MGRO J2031+41) is positionally consistent with the Cygnus Cocoon discovered by FermiFermi-LAT at GeV energies in the Cygnus superbubble. Reanalyzing the ARGO-YBJ data collected from November 2007 to January 2013, the angular extension and energy spectrum of ARGO J2031+4157 are evaluated. After subtracting the contribution of the overlapping TeV sources, the ARGO-YBJ excess map is fitted with a two-dimensional Gaussian function in a square region of 10∘×10∘10^{\circ}\times 10^{\circ}, finding a source extension σextσ_{ext}= 1∘^{\circ}.8±\pm0∘^{\circ}.5. The observed differential energy spectrum is dN/dE=(2.5±0.4)×10−11(E/1TeV)−2.6±0.3dN/dE =(2.5\pm0.4) \times 10^{-11}(E/1 TeV)^{-2.6\pm0.3} photons cm−2^{-2} s−1^{-1} TeV−1^{-1}, in the energy range 0.2-10 TeV. The angular extension is consistent with that of the Cygnus Cocoon as measured by FermiFermi-LAT, and the spectrum also shows a good connection with the one measured in the 1-100 GeV energy range. These features suggest to identify ARGO J2031+4157 as the counterpart of the Cygnus Cocoon at TeV energies. The Cygnus Cocoon, located in the star-forming region of Cygnus X, is interpreted as a cocoon of freshly accelerated cosmic rays related to the Cygnus superbubble. The spectral similarity with Supernova Remnants indicates that the particle acceleration inside a superbubble is similar to that in a SNR. The spectral measurements from 1 GeV to 10 TeV allows for the first time to determine the possible spectrum slope of the underlying particle distribution. A hadronic model is adopted to explain the spectral energy distribution.

Probe of the Solar Magnetic Field Using the "Cosmic-Ray Shadow" of the Sun

We report on a clear solar-cycle variation of the Sun's shadow in the 10 TeV cosmic-ray flux observed by the Tibet air shower array during a full solar cycle from 1996 to 2009. In order to clarify the physical implications of the observed solar cycle variation, we develop numerical simulations of the Sun's shadow, using the Potential Field Source Surface (PFSS) model and the Current Sheet Source Surface (CSSS) model for the coronal magnetic field. We find that the intensity deficit in the simulated Sun's shadow is very sensitive to the coronal magnetic field structure, and the observed variation of the Sun's shadow is better reproduced by the CSSS model. This is the first successful attempt to evaluate the coronal magnetic field models by using the Sun's shadow observed in the TeV cosmic-ray flux.

TeV gamma-ray survey of the Northern sky using the ARGO-YBJ detector

The ARGO-YBJ detector is an extensive air shower array that has been used to monitor the northern γγ-ray sky at energies above 0.3 TeV from 2007 November to 2013 January. In this paper, we present the results of a sky survey in the declination band from −10∘-10^{\circ} to 70∘70^{\circ}, using data recorded over the past five years. With an integrated sensitivity ranging from 0.24 to ∼\sim1 Crab units depending on the declination, six sources have been detected with a statistical significance greater than 5 standard deviations. Several excesses are also reported as potential γγ-ray emitters. The features of each source are presented and discussed. Additionally, 95%95\% confidence level upper limits of the flux from the investigated sky region are shown. Specific upper limits for 663 GeV γγ-ray AGNs inside the ARGO-YBJ field of view are reported. The effect of the absorption of γγ-rays due to the interaction with extragalactic background light is estimated.

Long-term Monitoring on Mrk 501 for Its VHE gamma Emission and a Flare in October 2011

As one of the brightest active blazars in both X-ray and very high energy γγ-ray bands, Mrk 501 is very useful for physics associated with jets from AGNs. The ARGO-YBJ experiment is monitoring it for γγ-rays above 0.3 TeV since November 2007. Starting from October 2011 the largest flare since 2005 is observed, which lasts to about April 2012. In this paper, a detailed analysis is reported. During the brightest γγ-rays flaring episodes from October 17 to November 22, 2011, an excess of the event rate over 6 σσ is detected by ARGO-YBJ in the direction of Mrk 501, corresponding to an increase of the γγ-ray flux above 1 TeV by a factor of 6.6±\pm2.2 from its steady emission. In particular, the γγ-ray flux above 8 TeV is detected with a significance better than 4 σσ. Based on time-dependent synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) processes, the broad-band energy spectrum is interpreted as the emission from an electron energy distribution parameterized with a single power-law function with an exponential cutoff at its high energy end. The average spectral energy distribution for the steady emission is well described by this simple one-zone SSC model. However, the detection of γγ-rays above 8 TeV during the flare challenges this model due to the hardness of the spectra. Correlations between X-rays and γγ-rays are also investigated.

Observation of TeV gamma rays from the Cygnus region with the ARGO-YBJ experiment

We report the observation of TeV gamma-rays from the Cygnus region using the ARGO-YBJ data collected from 2007 November to 2011 August. Several TeV sources are located in this region including the two bright extended MGRO J2019+37 and MGRO J2031+41. According to the Milagro data set, at 20 TeV MGRO J2019+37 is the most significant source apart from the Crab Nebula. No signal from MGRO J2019+37 is detected by the ARGO-YBJ experiment, and the derived flux upper limits at 90% confidence level for all the events above 600 GeV with medium energy of 3 TeV are lower than the Milagro flux, implying that the source might be variable and hard to be identified as a pulsar wind nebula. The only statistically significant (6.4 standard deviations) gamma-ray signal is found from MGRO J2031+41, with a flux consistent with the measurement by Milagro.

Long-term monitoring of the TeV emission from Mrk 421 with the ARGO-YBJ experiment

ARGO-YBJ is an air shower detector array with a fully covered layer of resistive plate chambers. It is operated with a high duty cycle and a large field of view. It continuously monitors the northern sky at energies above 0.3 TeV. In this paper, we report a long-term monitoring of Mrk 421 over the period from 2007 November to 2010 February. This source was observed by the satellite-borne experiments Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer and Swift in the X-ray band. Mrk 421 was especially active in the first half of 2008. Many flares are observed in both X-ray and gamma-ray bands simultaneously. The gamma-ray flux observed by ARGO-YBJ has a clear correlation with the X-ray flux. No lag between the X-ray and gamma-ray photons longer than 1 day is found. The evolution of the spectral energy distribution is investigated by measuring spectral indices at four different flux levels. Hardening of the spectra is observed in both X-ray and gamma-ray bands. The gamma-ray flux increases quadratically with the simultaneously measured X-ray flux. All these observational results strongly favor the synchrotron self-Compton process as the underlying radiative mechanism.

Mean Interplanetary Magnetic Field Measurement Using the ARGO-YBJ Experiment

The sun blocks cosmic ray particles from outside the solar system, forming a detectable shadow in the sky map of cosmic rays detected by the ARGO-YBJ experiment in Tibet. Because the cosmic ray particles are positive charged, the magnetic field between the sun and the earth deflects them from straight trajectories and results in a shift of the shadow from the true location of the sun. Here we show that the shift measures the intensity of the field which is transported by the solar wind from the sun to the earth.
