Non-Abelian Monopoles as the Origin of Dark Matter

We suggest that dark matter may be partially constituted by a dilute 't Hooft-Polyakov monopoles gas. We reach this conclusion by using the Georgi-Glashow model coupled to a dual kinetic mixing term $ F{\tilde {\cal G}}$ where $F$ is the electromagnetic field and ${\cal G}$ the 't Hooft tensor. We show that these monopoles carry both (Maxwell) electric and (Georgi-Glashow) magnetic charges and the electric charge quantization condition is modified in terms of a dimensionless real parameter. This parameter could be determined from milli-charged particle experiments.

On the algebraic structure of rotationally invariant two-dimensional Hamiltonians on the noncommutative phase space

We study two-dimensional Hamiltonians in phase space with noncommutativity both in coordinates and momenta. We consider the generator of rotations on the noncommutative plane and the Lie algebra generated by Hermitian rotationally invariant quadratic forms of noncommutative dynamical variables. We show that two quantum phases are possible, characterized by the Lie algebras $sl(2,\mathbb{R})$ or $su(2)$ according to the relation between the noncommutativity parameters, with the rotation generator related with the Casimir operator. From this algebraic perspective, we analyze the spectrum of some simple models with nonrelativistic rotationally invariant Hamiltonians in this noncommutative phase space, as the isotropic harmonic oscillator, the Landau problem and the cylindrical well potential. Boundaries in the Moyal plane

We study the oscillations of a scalar field on a noncommutative disc implementing the boundary as the limit case of an interaction with an appropriately chosen confining background. The space of quantum fluctuations of the field is finite dimensional and displays the rotational and parity symmetry of the disc. We perform a numerical evaluation of the (finite) Casimir energy and obtain similar results as for the fuzzy sphere and torus.

Graphene and non-Abelian quantization

In this article we employ a simple nonrelativistic model to describe the low energy excitation of graphene. The model is based on a deformation of the Heisenberg algebra which makes the commutator of momenta proportional to the pseudo-spin. We solve the Landau problem for the resulting Hamiltonian which reduces, in the large mass limit while keeping fixed the Fermi velocity, to the usual linear one employed to describe these excitations as massless Dirac fermions. This model, extended to negative mass, allows to reproduce the leading terms in the low energy expansion of the dispersion relation for both nearest and next-to-nearest neighbor interactions. Taking into account the contributions of both Dirac points, the resulting Hall conductivity, evaluated with a $ζ$-function approach, is consistent with the anomalous integer quantum Hall effect found in graphene. Moreover, when considered in first order perturbation theory, it is shown that the next-to-leading term in the interaction between nearest neighbor produces no modifications in the spectrum of the model while an electric field perpendicular to the magnetic field produces just a rigid shift of this spectrum. Noncommutativity in (2+1)-dimensions and the Lorentz group

In this article we considered models of particles living in a three-dimensional space-time with a nonstandard noncommutativity induced by shifting canonical coordinates and momenta with generators of a unitary irreducible representation of the Lorentz group. The Hilbert space gets the structure of a direct product with the representation space, where we are able to construct operators which realize the algebra of Lorentz transformations. We study the modified Landau problem for both Schrödinger and Dirac particles, whose Hamiltonians are obtained through a kind of non-Abelian Bopp's shift of the dynamical variables from the ones of the usual problem in the normal space. The spectrum of these models are considered in perturbation theory, both for small and large noncommutativity parameters. We find no constraint between the parameters referring to no-commutativity in coordinates and momenta but they rather play similar roles. Since the representation space of the unitary irreducible representations SL(2,R) can be realized in terms of spaces of square-integrable functions, we conclude that these models are equivalent to quantum mechanical models of particles living in a space with an additional compact dimension.

Spectral functions of non essentially selfadjoint operators

One of the many problems to which J.S. Dowker devoted his attention is the effect of a conical singularity in the base manifold on the behavior of the quantum fields. In particular, he studied the small-$t$ asymptotic expansion of the heat-kernel trace on a cone and its effects on physical quantities, as the Casimir energy. In this article we review some peculiar results found in the last decade, regarding the appearance of non-standard powers of $t$, and even negative integer powers of $\log{t}$, in this asymptotic expansion for the selfadjoint extensions of some symmetric operators with singular coefficients. Similarly, we show that the $ζ$-function associated to these selfadjoint extensions presents an unusual analytic structure.

Aharonov-Bohm effect in a Class of Noncommutative Theories

The Aharonov-Bohm effect including spin-noncommutative effects is considered. At linear order in $θ$, the magnetic field is gauge invariant although spatially strongly anisotropic. Despite this anisotropy, the Schrödinger-Pauli equation is separable through successive unitary transformations and the exact solution is found. The scattering amplitude is calculated and compared with the usual case. In the noncommutative Aharonov-Bohm case the differential cross section is independent of $θ$.

Observability of an induced electric dipole moment of the neutron from nonlinear QED

It has been shown recently that a neutron placed in an external quasistatic electric field develops an induced electric dipole moment $\mathbf{p}_{\mathrm{IND}}$ due to quantum fluctuations in the QED vacuum. A feasible experiment which could detect such an effect is proposed and described here. It is shown that the peculiar angular dependence of $\mathbf{p}_{\mathrm{IND}}$ on the orientation of the neutron spin leads to a characteristic asymmetry in polarized neutron scattering by heavy nuclei. This asymmetry can be of the order of $10^{-3}$ for neutrons with epithermal energies. For thermalized neutrons from a hot moderator one still expects experimentally accessible values of the order of $10^{-4}$. The contribution of the induced effect to the neutron scattering length is expected to be only one order of magnitude smaller than that due to the neutron polarizability from its quark substructure. The experimental observation of this scattering asymmetry would be the first ever signal of nonlinearity in electrodynamics due to quantum fluctuations in the QED vacuum.

Spin Non-commutativity and the Three-Dimensional Harmonic Oscillator

A three-dimensional harmonic oscillator with spin non-commutativity in the phase space is considered. The system has a regular symplectic structure and by using supersymmetric quantum mechanics techniques, the ground state is calculated exactly. We find that this state is infinitely degenerate and it has explicit spontaneous broken symmetry. Analyzing the Heisenberg equations, we show that the total angular momentum is conserved.

Induced electromagnetic fields in non-linear QED

The Euler-Heisenberg effective Lagrangian is used to obtain general expressions for electric and magnetic fields induced by non-linearity, to leading order in the non-linear expansion parameter, and for quasistatic situations. These expressions are then used to compute the induced electromagnetic fields due to a spherical shell with uniform charge distribution on the surface, in the presence of an external constant magnetic field. The induced electric field contains several multipole terms with unusual angular dependences. Most importantly, the leading term of the induced magnetic field is due to an induced magnetic dipole moment.

Self-adjoint extensions and SUSY breaking in Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics

We consider the self-adjoint extensions (SAE) of the symmetric supercharges and Hamiltonian for a model of SUSY Quantum Mechanics in $\mathbb{R}^+$ with a singular superpotential. We show that only for two particular SAE, whose domains are scale invariant, the algebra of N=2 SUSY is realized, one with manifest SUSY and the other with spontaneously broken SUSY. Otherwise, only the N=1 SUSY algebra is obtained, with spontaneously broken SUSY and non degenerate energy spectrum.

On the resolvent and spectral functions of a second order differential operator with a regular singularity

We consider the resolvent of a second order differential operator with a regular singularity, admitting a family of self-adjoint extensions. We find that the asymptotic expansion for the resolvent in the general case presents unusual powers of $λ$ which depend on the singularity. The consequences for the pole structure of the $ζ$-function, and the small-$t$ asymptotic expansion of the heat-kernel, are also discussed.

Hamiltonian self-adjoint extensions for (2+1)-dimensional Dirac particles

We study the stationary problem of a charged Dirac particle in (2+1) dimensions in the presence of a uniform magnetic field B and a singular magnetic tube of flux Phi = 2 pi kappa/e. The rotational invariance of this configuration implies that the subspaces of definite angular momentum l+1/2 are invariant under the action of the Hamiltonian H. We show that, for l different from the integer part of kappa, the restriction of H to these subspaces, H_l is essentially self-adjoint, while for l equal to the integer part of kappa, H_l admits a one-parameter family of self-adjoint extensions (SAE). In the later case, the functions in the domain of H_l are singular (but square-integrable) at the origin, their behavior being dictated by the value of the parameter gamma that identifies the SAE. We also determine the spectrum of the Hamiltonian as a function of kappa and gamma, as well as its closure.

Casimir energy for a scalar field with a frequency dependent boundary condition

We consider the vacuum energy for a scalar field subject to a frequency dependent boundary condition. The effect of a frequency cut-off is described in terms of an {\it incomplete} $ζ$-function. The use of the Debye asymptotic expansion for Bessel functions allows to determine the dominant (volume, area, >...) terms in the Casimir energy. The possible interest of this kind of models for dielectric media (and its application to sonoluminescence) is also discussed.

Determinants of elliptic boundary problems for Dirac operators I. Local boundary conditions

We study functional determinants for Dirac operators on manifolds with boundary and discuss the ellipticity of boundary problems by using the Calderón projector. We give, for local boundary conditions, an explicit formula relating these determinants to the corresponding Green functions. We finally apply this result to the case of a bidimensional disk under bag-like conditions.
