Vacuum polarization in high-dimensional AdS spacetime in the presence of a cosmic string and compactified extra dimension

In this paper, we analyze the vacuum expectation values (VEVs) of the field squared and the energy-momentum tensor associated with a charged and massive scalar quantum field in a generalized $(D+1)$-dimensional anti-de Sitter space in the presence of a cosmic string, admitting a magnetic flux running along the string's core. In addition we admit that an extra coordinate is compactified to a circle and presents a magnetic flux running along its center. This compactification is implemented by imposing a quasiperiodic condition on the field with an arbitrary phase. The calculation of the VEVs of the field squared and the energy-moment tensor, are developed by using positive-energy Wightman function. The latter is construct by the mode sum over the complete set of normalized bosonic wavefunctions. Due to the compactification, the Wightman function is presented as the sum of two distinct contributions. The first one corresponding to the idealized cosmic string, and the second is induced by the compactification. The latter goes to zero for an infinite length of the compactification. As a consequence of the general structure of the Wightman function, both VEVs present also this decomposition. Moreover, due to the Aharanov-Bohm type of interaction between the field with the magnetic fluxes, the VEVs depend on the fractional part of the ration between the total flux and the quantum one.

Light-Cone Fluctuations in the Cosmic String Spacetime

In this paper we consider light-cone fluctuations arising as a consequence of the nontrivial topology of the locally flat cosmic string spacetime. By setting the light-cone along the z-direction we are able to develop a full analysis to calculate the renormalized graviton two-point function, as well as the mean square fluctuation in the geodesic interval function and the time delay (or advance) in the propagation of a light-pulse. We found that all these expressions depend upon the parameter characterizing the conical topology of the cosmic string spacetime and vanish in the absence of it. We also point out that at large distances from the cosmic string the mean square fluctuation in the geodesic interval function is extremely small while in the opposite limit it logarithmically increases, improving the signal and thus, making possible the detection of such quantity.

Casimir effect due to a slowly rotating source in the weak field approximation

We calculate the renormalized vacuum energy density for a massless scalar field confined between two nearby parallel plates formed by ideal uncharged conductors, placed very close to the surface of a rotating spherical gravitational source with mass $M$, radius $R$ and momentum angular $J$, at the equatorial region. We consider that the source rotates slowly and that the gravitational field is weak. Corrections to the Casimir energy density induced by the gravitational field generated by this source are calculated up to $M/R^2$ order. The obtained results show us that there is an important modification in the Casimir energy only in this order of approximation, which depends on the surface gravity as well as on the rotation of the source. Thermal corrections to the Casimir energy found also are calculated in all these orders.

Noninertial effects on the ground state energy of a massive scalar field in the cosmic string spacetime

We investigate the influence of noninertial effects on the ground state energy of a massive scalar field in the cosmic string spacetime. We generalize the results obtained by Khusnutdinov and Bordag [N. R. Khusnutdinov and M. Bordag, Phys. Rev. D 59, 064017 (1999)] to a noninertial reference frame and show, by contrast, that a non-vanishing contribution to the ground state energy stems from the noninertial effects. Moreover, we show that there is no influence of the curvature of the spacetime on this non-vanishing contribution to the ground state energy of a massive scalar field.

Casimir-Polder interaction between an atom and a conducting wall in cosmic string spacetime

The Casimir-Polder interaction potential is evaluated for a polarizable microparticle and a conducting wall in the geometry of a cosmic string perpendicular to the wall. The general case of the anisotropic polarizability tensor for the microparticle is considered. The corresponding force is a function of the wall-microparticle and cosmic string-microparticle distances. Depending on the orientation of the polarizability tensor principal axes the force can be either attractive or repulsive. The asymptotic behavior of the Casimir-Polder potential is investigated at large and small separations compared to the wavelength of the dominant atomic transitions. We show that the conical defect may be used to control the strength and the sign of the Casimir-Polder force.

Thermal Casimir effect for neutrino and electromagnetic fields in closed Friedmann cosmological model

We calculate the total internal energy, total energy density and pressure, and the free energy for the neutrino and electromagnetic fields in Einstein and closed Friedmann cosmological models. The Casimir contributions to all these quantities are separated. The asymptotic expressions for both the total internal energy and free energy, and for the Casimir contributions to them are found in the limiting cases of low and high temperatures. It is shown that the neutrino field does not possess a classical limit at high temperature. As for the electromagnetic field, we demonstrate that the total internal energy has the classical contribution and the Casimir internal energy goes to the classical limit at high temperature. The respective Casimir free energy contains both linear and logarithmic terms with respect to the temperature. The total and Casimir entropies for the neutrino and electromagnetic fields at low temperature are also calculated and shown to be in agreement with the Nernst heat theorem.
