Coherent radiation from a chain of charged particles on a circular orbit around a dielectric ball

We investigate the electromagnetic radiation from a chain of relativistic charged particles uniformly rotating along equatorial orbit around a dielectric ball. For weak absorption of radiation in the ball material, at certain rotation frequency the radiation intensity becomes significantly higher than the corresponding value for a chain of charges rotating in free space or in a transparent medium with the same dielectric constant as that for the ball material. In the case of an equidistant distribution of charged particles along the orbit we determine the values of parameters of the problem for which the charges in the chain emit coherently. It is shown that the radiation intensity on a given harmonic increases in proportion to the square of the number of emitting charges. We also show that the relative shifts in the particles locations up to 10\% do not destroy the coherence properties of the radiation. It is demonstrated that the coherence effects may also dominate in the radiation intensity for chains with non-equidistant distributions of particles. The numerical results obtained for different dielectric balls have revealed the emitted radiation to be in the GHz/THz frequency ranges. The high-power radiation of the chain propagates in the angular range with respect to the rotation plane determined by the Cherenkov condition for the velocity of the chain projection onto the ball surface.

Cosmic string and brane induced effects on the fermionic vacuum in AdS spacetime

We investigate the combined effects of a magnetic flux-carrying cosmic string and a brane on the fermionic condensate (FC) and on the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the energy-momentum tensor for a massive charged fermionic field in background of 5-dimensional anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime. The brane is parallel to the AdS boundary and it divides the space into two regions with distinct properties of the fermionic vacuum. For two types of boundary conditions on the field operator and for the fields realizing two inequivalent representations of the Clifford algebra, the brane-induced contributions in VEVs are explicitly separated. The VEVs are even periodic functions of the magnetic flux, confined in the core, with the period of flux quantum. Near the horizon the FC and the vacuum energy-momentum tensor are dominated by the brane-free contribution, whereas the brane-induced part dominates in the region near the brane. Both the contributions vanish on the AdS boundary. At large distances from the cosmic string, the topological contributions in the VEVs, as functions of the proper distance, exhibit an inverse power-law decrease in the region between the brane and AdS horizon and an exponential decrease in the region between the brane and AdS boundary. We show that the FC and the vacuum energy density can be either positive or negative, depending on the distance from the brane. Applications are discussed in fermionic models invariant under the charge conjugation and parity transformation and also in $Z_{2}$% -symmetric braneworld models. By the limiting transition we derive the expressions of the FC and the vacuum energy-momentum tensor for a cosmic string on 5-dimensional Minkowski bulk in the presence of a boundary perpendicular to the string.

Topological effects in fermion condensate induced by cosmic string and compactification on AdS bulk

We investigate the fermion condensate (FC) for a massive spinor field on background of the 5-dimensional locally anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime with a compact dimension and in the presence of a cosmic string carrying a magnetic flux. The FC is decomposed into two contributions. The first one corresponds to the geometry without compactification and the second one is induced by the compactification. Depending on the values of the parameters, the total FC can be either positive or negative. As a limiting case, the expression for the FC on locally Minkowski spacetime is derived. It vanishes for a massless fermion field and the nonzero FC on the AdS bulk in the massless case is an effect induced by gravitation. This shows that the gravitational field may essentially influence the parameters space for phase transitions. For a massive field the FC diverges on the string as the inverse cube of the proper distance from the string. In the case of a massless field, depending on the magnetic flux along the string and planar angle deficit, the limiting value of the FC on the string can be either finite or infinite. At large distances, the decay of the FC as a function of the distance from the string is power law for both cases of massive and massless fields. For a cosmic string on the Minkowski bulk and for a massive field the decay is exponential. The topological part in the FC vanishes on the AdS boundary. We show that the FCs coincide for the fields realizing two inequivalent irreducible representations of the Clifford algebra. In the special case of the zero planar angle deficit, the results presented in this paper describe Aharonov-Bohm-type effects induced by magnetic fluxes in curved spacetime.

Vacuum currents in partially compactified Rindler spacetime with an application to cylindrical black holes

The vacuum expectation value of the current density for a charged scalar field is investigated in Rindler spacetime with a part of spatial dimensions compactified to a torus. It is assumed that the field is prepared in the Fulling-Rindler vacuum state. For general values of the phases in the periodicity conditions and the lengths of compact dimensions, the expressions are provided for the Hadamard function and vacuum currents. The current density along compact dimensions is a periodic function of the magnetic flux enclosed by those dimensions and vanishes on the Rindler horizon. The obtained results are compared with the corresponding currents in the Minkowski vacuum. The near-horizon and large-distance asymptotics are discussed for the vacuum currents around cylindrical black holes. In the near-horizon approximation the lengths of compact dimensions are determined by the horizon radius. At large distances from the horizon the geometry is approximated by a locally anti-de Sitter spacetime with toroidally compact dimensions and the lengths of compact dimensions are determined by negative cosmological constant.

Fermionic vacuum polarization around a cosmic string in compactified AdS spacetime

We investigate topological effects of a cosmic string and compactification of a spatial dimension on the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the energy-momentum tensor for a fermionic field in (4+1)-dimensional locally AdS spacetime. The contribution induced by the compactification is explicitly extracted by using the Abel-Plana summation formula. The mean energy-momentum tensor is diagonal and the vacuum stresses along the direction perpendicular to the AdS boundary and along the cosmic string are equal to the energy density. All the components are even periodic functions of the magnetic fluxes inside the string core and enclosed by compact dimension, with the period equal to the flux quantum. The vacuum energy density can be either positive or negative, depending on the values of the parameters and the distance from the string. The topological contributions in the VEV of the energy-momentum tensor vanish on the AdS boundary. Near the string the effects of compactification and gravitational field are weak and the leading term in the asymptotic expansion coincides with the corresponding VEV in (4+1)-dimensional Minkowski spacetime. At large distances, the decay of the cosmic string induced contribution in the vacuum energy-momentum tensor, as a function of the proper distance from the string, follows a power law. For a cosmic string in the Minkowski bulk and for massive fields the corresponding fall off is exponential. Within the framework of the AdS/CFT correspondence, the geometry for conformal field theory on the AdS boundary corresponds to the standard cosmic string in (3+1)-dimensional Minkowski spacetime compactified along its axis.

Angular distribution of high power radiation from a charge rotating around a dielectric ball

We study the angular distribution of the radiation from a relativistic charged particle uniformly rotating along an equatorial orbit around a dielectric ball. Earlier it was shown that for some values of the problem parameters and in the case of weak absorption in the ball material, the radiation intensity on a given harmonic can be essentially larger than that for the same charge rotating in the vacuum or in a homogeneous transparent medium having the same real part of dielectric permittivity as the ball material. The generation of such high power radiation is a consequence of the constructive superposition of electromagnetic oscillations of Cherenkov radiation induced near the trajectory of the particle and partially locked inside the ball. The angular distribution of the number of the emitted quanta is investigated for such high power radiation. It is shown that the radiation is mainly located in the angular range near the rotation plane determined by the Cherenkov condition for the velocity of the charge image on the ball surface. The numerical analysis is given for balls made of strontium titanate, melted quartz and teflon in the gigahertz and terahertz frequency ranges.

Cherenkov radiation and emission of surface polaritons from charges moving paraxially outside a dielectric cylindrical waveguide

We investigate the radiation from a charged particle moving outside a dielectric cylinder parallel to its axis. It is assumed that the cylinder is immersed into a homogeneous medium. The expressions are given for the vector potential and for the electric and magnetic fields. The spectral distributions are studied for three types of the radiations: (i) Cherenkov radiation (CR) in the exterior medium, (ii) radiation on the guided modes of the dielectric cylinder, and (iii) emission of surface polaritons. Unlike the first two types of radiations, there is no velocity threshold for the generation of surface polaritons. The corresponding radiation is present in the spectral range where the dielectric permittivities of the cylinder and surrounding medium have opposite signs. The spectral range of the emitted surface polaritons becomes narrower with decreasing energy of the particle. The general results are illustrated for a special case of the Drude model for dispersion of the dielectric permittivity of the cylinder. We show that the presence of the cylinder may lead to the appearance of strong narrow peaks in the spectral distribution of the CR in the exterior medium. The conditions are specified for the appearance of those peaks and the corresponding heights and widths are analytically estimated. The collective effects of particles in bunches are discussed.

Self-amplification of radiation from an electron bunch inside a waveguide filled with periodic medium

We investigate the radiation from a bunch of relativistic electrons moving along the cylindrical waveguide axis, assuming that the waveguide is partially loaded by a medium with periodic dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability. The spectral distribution of the radiation energy flux through the cross section of the waveguide is studied at large distances from the medium. The analysis is based on the corresponding exact solution of Maxwell equations for the case of a single electron moving along the waveguide axis. The results of numerical calculations are presented in the special case of layered medium consisting of a finite number of dielectric plates separated by vacuum gaps. We show that under certain conditions on the problem parameters the quasi-coherent Cherenkov radiation generated by the electron bunch inside the plates is self-amplified at certain waveguide modes. A visual explanation of this phenomenon is provided that reproduces the main features to rather good accuracy.

The Casimir densities for a sphere in the Milne universe

The influence of a spherical boundary on the vacuum fluctuations of a massive scalar field is investigated in background of $(D+1)$-dimensional Milne universe, assuming that the field obeys Robin boundary condition on the sphere. The normalized mode functions are derived for the regions inside and outside the sphere and different vacuum states are discussed. For the conformal vacuum, the Hadamard function is decomposed into boundary-free and sphere-induced contributions and an integral representation is obtained for the latter in both the interior and exterior regions. As important local characteristics of the vacuum state the vacuum expectation values (VEVs) of the field squared and of the energy-momentum tensor are investigated. It is shown that the vacuum energy-momentum tensor has an off-diagonal component that corresponds to the energy flux along the radial direction. Depending on the coefficient in Robin boundary condition the sphere-induced contribution to the vacuum energy and the energy flux can be either positive or negative. At late stages of the expansion and for a massive field the decay of the sphere-induced VEVs, as functions of time, is damping oscillatory. The geometry under consideration is conformally related to that for a static spacetime with negative constant curvature space and the sphere-induced contributions in the corresponding VEVs are compared.

Fermionic vacuum currents in topologically nontrivial braneworlds: Two-brane geometry

The vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the fermionic current density is investigated in the geometry of two parallel branes in locally AdS spacetime with a part of spatial dimensions compactified to a torus. Along the toral dimensions quasiperiodicity conditions are imposed with general phases and the presence of a constant gauge field is assumed. Different types of boundary conditions are discussed on the branes, including the bag boundary condition and the conditions arising in $Z_{2}$-symmetric braneworld models. Nonzero vacuum currents appear along the compact dimensions only. In the region between the branes they are decomposed into the brane-free and brane-induced contributions. Both these contributions are periodic functions of the magnetic flux enclosed by compact dimensions with the period equal to the flux quantum. Depending on the boundary conditions, the presence of the branes can either increase or decrease the vacuum current density. For a part of boundary conditions, a memory effect is present in the limit when one of the branes tends to the AdS boundary. Unlike to the fermion condensate and the VEV of the energy-momentum tensor, the VEV of the current density is finite on the branes. Applications are given to higher-dimensional generalizations of the Randall-Sundrum models with two branes and with toroidally compact subspace. The features of the fermionic current are discussed in odd-dimensional parity and time-reversal symmetric models. The corresponding results for three-dimensional spacetime are applied to finite length curved graphene tubes threaded by a magnetic flux. It is shown that a nonzero current density can also appear in the absence of the magnetic flux if the fields corresponding to two different points of the Brillouin zone obey different boundary conditions on the tube edges.

Synchrotron radiation from a charge circulating around a cylinder with negative permittivity

We investigate the radiation from a charged particle rotating around a dielectric cylinder with a negative real part of dielectric permittivity. For the general case of frequency dispersion in dielectric permittivity, expressions are derived for the electric and magnetic fields and for the angular density of the radiation intensity on a given harmonic. Compared with the case of a cylinder with positive real part of the permittivity, new interesting features arise in the nonrelativistic limit and for the radiation at small angles with respect to the cylinder axis. Another feature is the appearance of sharp narrow peaks in the angular density of the radiation intensity for large harmonics. We analytically estimate the height, width and the location of these peaks. The influence of the imaginary part of dielectric permittivity on the characteristics of the peaks is discussed. The analytical results are illustrated by numerical examples. We show that the radiation intensity on a given harmonic, integrated over the angles, can be essentially amplified by the presence of the cylinder.

The Casimir effect for fermionic currents in conical rings with applications to graphene ribbons

We investigate the combined effects of boundaries and topology on the vacuum expectation values (VEVs) of the charge and current densities for a massive 2D fermionic field confined on a conical ring threaded by a magnetic flux. Different types of boundary conditions on the ring edges are considered for fields realizing two inequivalent irreducible representations of the Clifford algebra. The related bound states and zero energy fermionic modes are discussed. The edge contributions to the VEVs of the charge and azimuthal current densities are explicitly extracted and their behavior in various asymptotic limits is considered. On the ring edges the azimuthal current density is equal to the charge density or has an opposite sign. We show that the absolute values of the charge and current densities increase with increasing planar angle deficit. Depending on the boundary conditions, the VEVs are continuous or discontinuous at half-integer values of the ratio of the effective magnetic flux to the flux quantum. The discontinuity is related to the presence of the zero energy mode. By combining the results for the fields realizing the irreducible representations of the Clifford algebra, the charge and current densities are studied in parity and time-reversal symmetric fermionic models. If the boundary conditions and the phases in quasiperiodicity conditions for separate fields are the same the total charge density vanishes. Applications are given to graphitic cones with edges (conical ribbons).

Scalar Casimir effect in a linearly expanding universe

We investigate quantum vacuum effects for a massive scalar field, induced by two planar boundaries in background of a linearly expanding spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spacetime for an arbitrary number of spatial dimensions. For the Robin boundary conditions and for general curvature coupling parameter, a complete set of mode functions is presented and the related Hadamard function is evaluated. The results are specified for the most important special cases of the adiabatic and conformal vacuum states. The vacuum expectation values of the field squared and of the energy-momentum tensor are investigated for a massive conformally coupled field. The vacuum energy-momentum tensor, in addition to the diagonal components, has nonzero off-diagonal component describing energy flux along the direction perpendicular to the plates. The influence of the gravitational field on the local characteristics of the vacuum state is essential at distances from the boundaries larger than the curvature radius of the background spacetime. In contrast to the Minkowskian bulk, at large distances the boundary-induced expectation values follow as power law for both massless and massive fields. Another difference is that the Casimir forces acting on the separate plates do not coincide if the corresponding Robin coefficients are different. At large separations between the plates the decay of the forces is power law. We show that during the cosmological expansion the forces may change the sign.

Electromagnetic Casimir densities for a cylindrical shell on de Sitter space

Complete set of cylindrical modes is constructed for the electromagnetic field inside and outside a cylindrical shell in the background of $(D+1)$% -dimensional dS spacetime. On the shell, the field obeys the generalized perfect conductor boundary condition. For the Bunch-Davies vacuum state, we evaluate the expectation values (VEVs) of the electric field squared and of the energy-momentum tensor. The shell-induced contributions are explicitly extracted. In this way, for points away from the shell, the renormalization is reduced to the one for the VEVs in the boundary-free dS bulk. As a special case, the VEVs are obtained for a cylindrical shell in the $(D+1)$% -dimensional Minkowski bulk. We show that the shell-induced contribution in the electric field squared is positive for both the interior and exterior regions. The corresponding Casimir-Polder forces are directed toward the shell. The vacuum energy-momentum tensor, in addition to the diagonal components, has a nonzero off-diagonal component corresponding to the energy flux along the direction normal to the shell. This flux is directed from the shell in both the exterior and interior regions. For points near the shell, the leading terms in the asymptotic expansions for the electric field squared and diagonal components of the energy-momentum tensor are obtained from the corresponding expressions in the Minkowski bulk replacing the distance from the shell by the proper distance in the dS bulk. The influence of the gravitational field on the local characteristics of the vacuum is essential at distances from the shell larger than the dS curvature radius. The results are extended for confining boundary conditions of flux tube models in QCD.

Finite temperature fermion condensate, charge and current densities in a (2+1)-dimensional conical space

We evaluate the fermion condensate and the expectation values of the charge and current densities for a massive fermionic field in (2+1)-dimensional conical spacetime with a magnetic flux located at the cone apex. The consideration is done for both irreducible representations of the Clifford algebra. The expectation values are decomposed into the vacuum expectation values and contributions coming from particles and antiparticles. All these contributions are periodic functions of the magnetic flux with the period equal to the flux quantum. Related to the non-invariance of the model under the parity and time-reversal transformations, the fermion condensate and the charge density have indefinite parity with respect to the change of the signs of the magnetic flux and chemical potential. The expectation value of the radial current density vanishes. The azimuthal current density is the same for both the irreducible representations of the Clifford algebra. It is an odd function of the magnetic flux and an even function of the chemical potential. The behavior of the expectation values in various asymptotic regions of the parameters are discussed in detail. In particular, we show that for points near the cone apex the vacuum parts dominate. For a massless field with zero chemical potential the fermion condensate and charge density vanish. Simple expressions are derived for the part in the total charge induced by the planar angle deficit and magnetic flux. Combining the results for separate irreducible representations, we also consider the fermion condensate, charge and current densities in parity and time-reversal symmetric models. Possible applications to graphitic nanocones are discussed.

Induced fermionic charge and current densities in two-dimensional rings

For a massive quantum fermionic field, we investigate the vacuum expectation values (VEVs) of the charge and current densities induced by an external magnetic flux in a two-dimensional circular ring. Both the irreducible representations of the Clifford algebra are considered. On the ring edges the bag (infinite mass) boundary conditions are imposed for the field operator. This leads to the Casimir type effect on the vacuum characteristics. The radial current vanishes. The charge and the azimuthal current are decomposed into the boundary-free and boundary-induced contributions. Both these contributions are odd periodic functions of the magnetic flux with the period equal to the flux quantum. An important feature that distinguishes the VEVs of the charge and current densities from the VEV of the energy density, is their finiteness on the ring edges. The current density is equal to the charge density for the outer edge and has the opposite sign on the inner edge. The VEVs are peaked near the inner edge and, as functions of the field mass, exhibit quite different features for two inequivalent representations of the Clifford algebra. We show that, unlike the VEVs in the boundary-free geometry, the vacuum charge and the current in the ring are continuous functions of the magnetic flux and vanish for half-odd integer values of the flux in units of the flux quantum. Combining the results for two irreducible representations, we also investigate the induced charge and current in parity and time-reversal symmetric models. The corresponding results are applied to graphene rings with the electronic subsystem described in terms of the effective Dirac theory with the energy gap. If the energy gaps for two valleys of the graphene hexagonal lattice are the same, the charge densities corresponding to the separate valleys cancel each other, whereas the azimuthal current is doubled.

Qualitative evolution in f(R) cosmologies

We investigate the qualitative evolution of (D+1)-dimensional cosmological models in f(R) gravity for the general case of the function f(R). The analysis is specified for various examples, including the (D+1)-dimensional generalization of the Starobinsky model, models with polynomial and exponential functions. The cosmological dynamics are compared in the Einstein and Jordan representations of the corresponding scalar-tensor theory. The features of the cosmological evolution are discussed for Einstein frame potentials taking negative values in certain regions of the field space.

Transition radiation on a dynamical periodical interface

We investigate the transition radiation on a periodically deformed interface between two dielectric media. Under the assumption that the dielectric permittivities of the media are close, a formula is derived for the spectral-angular distribution of the radiated energy in the general case of non-static profile function for the separating boundary. In particular, the latter includes the case of surface waves propagating along the boundary. The numerical examples are given for triangular grating and for sinusoidal profile. We show that instead of a single peak in the backward transition radiation on a flat interface, for periodic interface one has a set of peaks. The number and the locations of the peaks depend on the incidence angle of the charge and on the period of the interface. The conditions are specified for their appearance.

Casimir effect for scalar current densities in topologically nontrivial spaces

We evaluate the Hadamard function and the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the current density for a charged scalar field, induced by flat boundaries in spacetimes with an arbitrary number of toroidally compactified spatial dimensions. The field operator obeys the Robin conditions on the boundaries and quasiperiodicity conditions with general phases along compact dimensions. In addition, the presence of a constant gauge field is assumed. The latter induces Aharonov-Bohm-type effect on the VEVs. There is a region in the space of the parameters in Robin boundary conditions where the vacuum state becomes unstable. The stability condition depends on the lengths of compact dimensions and is less restrictive than that for background with trivial topology. The vacuum current density is a periodic function of the magnetic flux, enclosed by compact dimensions, with the period equal to the flux quantum. It is explicitly decomposed into the boundary-free and boundary-induced contributions. In sharp contrast to the VEVs of the field squared and the energy-momentum tensor, the current density does not contain surface divergences. Moreover, for Dirichlet condition it vanishes on the boundaries. The normal derivative of the current density on the boundaries vanish for both Dirichlet and Neumann conditions and is nonzero for general Robin conditions. When the separation between the plates is smaller than other length scales, the behavior of the current density is essentially different for non-Neumann and Neumann boundary conditions. In the former case, the total current density in the region between the plates tends to zero. For Neumann boundary condition on both plates, the current density is dominated by the interference part and is inversely proportional to the separation.

Electromagnetic Casimir effect for conducting plates in de Sitter spacetime

Two-point functions, the mean field squared and the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the energy-momentum tensor are investigated for the electromagnetic field in the geometry of parallel plates on background of $(D+1)$% -dimensional dS spacetime. We assume that the field is prepared in the Bunch-Davies vacuum state and on the plates a boundary condition is imposed that is a generalization of the perfectly conducting boundary condition for an arbitrary number of spatial dimensions. It is shown that for $D\geq 4$ the background gravitational field essentially changes the behavior of the VEVs at separations between the plates larger than the curvature radius of dS spacetime. At large separations, the Casimir forces are proportional to the inverse fourth power of the distance for all values of spatial dimension $D\geq 3$. For $D\geq 4$ this behavior is in sharp contrast with the case of plates in Minkowski bulk where the force decays as the inverse $(D+1)$th power of the distance.

Hadamard function and the vacuum currents in braneworlds with compact dimensions: Two-branes geometry

We evaluate the Hadamard function and the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the current density for a charged scalar field in the region between two co-dimension one branes on the background of locally AdS spacetime with an arbitrary number of toroidally compactified spatial dimensions. Along compact dimensions periodicity conditions are considered with general values of the phases and on the branes Robin boundary conditions are imposed for the field operator. In addition, we assume the presence of a constant gauge field. The latter gives rise to Aharonov-Bohm type effect on the vacuum currents. There exists a range in the space of the Robin coefficients for separate branes where the vacuum state becomes unstable. Compared to the case of the standard AdS bulk, in models with compact dimensions the stability condition imposed on the parameters is less restrictive. The current density has nonzero components along compact dimensions only. These components are decomposed into the brane-free and brane-induced contributions. The component along a given compact dimension is a periodic function of the gauge field flux, enclosed by that dimension, with the period of the flux quantum. An important feature, that distinguishes the current density from the expectation values of the field squared and energy-momentum tensor, is its finiteness on the branes. In particular, for Dirichlet boundary condition the current density vanishes on the branes. We show that, depending on the constants in the boundary conditions, the presence of the branes may either increase or decrease the current density compared with that for the brane-free geometry. Applications are given to the Randall--Sundrum 2-brane model with extra compact dimensions.

Vacuum currents in braneworlds on AdS bulk with compact dimensions

The two-point function and VEV of the current density are investigated for a massive charged scalar field with arbitrary curvature coupling in the geometry of a brane on background of AdS spacetime with partial toroidal compactification. The presence of a gauge field flux enclosed by compact dimensions is assumed. On the brane the field obeys Robin boundary condition and along compact dimensions periodicity conditions with general phases are imposed. There is a range in the space of values for the coefficient in the boundary condition where Poincare vacuum is unstable. This range depends on the brane location. In models with compact dimensions the stability condition is less restrictive than for AdS bulk with trivial topology.Vacuum charge density and components of current along non-compact dimensions vanish. VEV of the current density along compact dimensions is a periodic function of the gauge field flux with a period equal to the flux quantum. It is decomposed into the boundary-free and brane-induced contributions. The asymptotic behavior of the latter is investigated near the brane, AdS boundary and horizon. In contrast to VEVs of the field squared and energy-momentum tensor, current density is finite on brane and vanishes for the special case of Dirichlet boundary condition. Both boundary-free and brane-induced contributions vanish on AdS boundary.Brane-induced contribution vanishes on the horizon and for points near the horizon the current is dominated by the boundary-free part.In the near-horizon limit, the latter is connected to the corresponding quantity for a massless field in the Minkowski bulk by a simple conformal relation.Depending on the value of the Robin coefficient, the presence of the brane can either increase or decrease the vacuum currents. Applications are given for a higher-dimensional version of the Randall-Sundrum 1-brane model

Vacuum densities for a brane intersecting the AdS boundary

We investigate the Wightman function, the mean field squared and the vacuum expectation values of energy-momentum tensor for a scalar field in AdS spacetime, in the presence of a brane perpendicular to the AdS boundary. On the brane the field operator obeys Robin boundary condition. The vacuum expectation values are decomposed into the boundary-free AdS and brane-induced contributions. In this way, for points away from the brane, the renormalization is reduced to the one in pure AdS spacetime. It is shown that at proper distances from the brane larger than the AdS curvature radius the brane-induced expectation values decay as power-law for both massless and massive scalars. This behavior is in contrast to that for a plane boundary in Minkowski spacetime, with an exponential decay for massive fields. For Robin boundary conditions different from Dirichlet and Neumann ones, the brane-induced part in the energy density is positive near the brane and negative at large distances. For Dirichlet/Neumann boundary condition the corresponding energy density is negative/positive everywhere. We show that, for a fixed value of the proper distance from the brane, near the AdS boundary, the Neumann boundary condition is an "attractor" in the general class of Robin boundary conditions, whereas Dirichlet boundary condition is an "attractor" near the horizon.

Casimir densities from coexisting vacua

Wightman function, the vacuum expectation values (VEVs) of the field squared and the energy-momentum tensor are investigated for a massive scalar field with general curvature coupling in a spherically symmetric static background geometry described by two distinct metric tensors inside and outside a spherical boundary. The exterior and interior geometries can correspond to different vacuum states of the same theory. In the region outside the sphere, the contributions in the VEVs, induced by the interior geometry, are explicitly separated. For the special case of the Minkowskian exterior geometry, the asymptotics of the VEVs near the boundary and at large distances are discussed in detail. In particular, it has been shown that the divergences on the boundary are weaker than in the problem of a spherical boundary in Minkowski spacetime with Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions. As an application of general results, dS and AdS spaces are considered as examples of the interior geometry. For AdS interior there are no bound states. In the case of dS geometry and for nonminimally coupled fields, bound states appear for a radius of the separating boundary sufficiently close to the dS horizon. Starting from a critical value of the radius the Minkowskian vacuum in the exterior region becomes unstable. For small values of the AdS curvature radius, to the leading order, the VEVs in the exterior region coincide with those for a spherical boundary in Minkowski spacetime with Dirichlet boundary condition. The exceptions are the cases of minimal and conformal couplings: for a minimal coupling the VEVs are reduced to the case with Neumann boundary condition, whereas for a conformally coupled field there is no reduction to Dirichlet or Neumann results.

Casimir effect in hemisphere capped tubes

In this paper we investigate the vacuum densities for a massive scalar field with general curvature coupling in background of a (2+1)-dimensional spacetime corresponding to a cylindrical tube with a hemispherical cap. A complete set of mode functions is constructed and the positive-frequency Wightman function is evaluated for both the cylindrical and hemispherical subspaces. On the base of this, the vacuum expectation values of the field squared and energy-momentum tensor are investigated. The mean field squared and the normal stress are finite on the boundary separating two subspaces, whereas the energy density and the parallel stress diverge as the inverse power of the distance from the boundary. For a conformally coupled field, the vacuum energy density is negative on the cylindrical part of the space. On the hemisphere, it is negative near the top and positive close to the boundary. In the case of minimal coupling the energy density on the cup is negative. On the tube it is positive near the boundary and negative at large distances. Though the geometries of the subspaces are different, the Casimir pressures on the separate sides of the boundary are equal and the net Casimir force vanishes. The results obtained may be applied to capped carbon nanotubes described by an effective field theory in the long-wavelength approximation.

Finite temperature fermionic charge and current densities induced by a cosmic string with magnetic flux

We investigate the finite temperature expectation values of the charge and current densities for a massive fermionic field with nonzero chemical potential, $μ$, in the geometry of a straight cosmic string with a magnetic flux running along its axis. These densities are decomposed into the vacuum expectation values and contributions coming from the particles and antiparticles. The charge density is an even periodic function of the magnetic flux with the period equal to the quantum flux and an odd function of the chemical potential. The only nonzero component of the current density corresponds to the azimuthal current. The latter is an odd periodic function of the magnetic flux and an even function of the chemical potential. At high temperatures, the parts in the charge density and azimuthal current induced by the planar angle deficit and magnetic flux are exponentially small. The asymptotic behavior at low temperatures crucially depends whether the value $|μ|$ is larger or smaller than the mass of the field quanta, $m$. For $|μ|<m$ the charge density and the contributions into the azimuthal current coming from the particles and antiparticles are exponentially suppressed at low temperatures. In the case $|μ|>m$, the charge and current densities receive two contributions coming from the vacuum expectation values and from particles or antiparticles (depending on the sign of chemical potential). At large distances from the string the latter exhibits a damping oscillatory behavior with the amplitude inversely proportional to the square of the distance.

Induced fermionic currents in de Sitter spacetime in the presence of a compactified cosmic string

We investigate the vacuum fermionic currents in the geometry of a compactified cosmic string on background of de Sitter spacetime. The currents are induced by magnetic fluxes running along the cosmic string and enclosed by the compact dimension. We show that the vacuum charge and the radial component of the current density vanish. By using the Abel-Plana summation formula, the azimuthal and axial currents are explicitly decomposed into two parts: the first one corresponds to the geometry of a straight cosmic string and the second one is induced by the compactification of the string along its axis. For the axial current the first part vanishes and the corresponding topological part is an even periodic function of the magnetic flux along the string axis and an odd periodic function of the flux enclosed by the compact dimension with the periods equal to the flux quantum. The azimuthal current density is an odd periodic function of the flux along the string axis and an even periodic function of the flux enclosed by the compact dimension with the same period. Depending on the magnetic fluxes, the planar angle deficit can either enhance or reduce the azimuthal and axial currents. The influence of the background gravitational field on the vacuum currents is crucial at distances from the string larger than the de Sitter curvature radius. In particular, for the geometry of a straight cosmic string and for a massive fermionic field, we show that the decay of the azimuthal current density is damping oscillatory with the amplitude inversely proportional to the fourth power of the distance from the string. This behavior is in clear contrast with the case of the string in Minkowski bulk where the current density is exponentially suppressed at large distances.

Induced vacuum currents in anti-de Sitter space with toral dimensions

We investigate the Hadamard function and the vacuum expectation value of the current density for a charged massive scalar field on a slice of anti-de Sitter (AdS) space described in Poincaré coordinates with toroidally compact dimensions. Along compact dimensions periodicity conditions are imposed on the field with general phases. Moreover, the presence of a constant gauge field is assumed. The latter gives rise to Aharonov-Bohm-like effects on the vacuum currents. The current density along compact dimensions is a periodic function of the gauge field flux with the period equal to the flux quantum. It vanishes on the AdS boundary and, near the horizon, to the leading order, it is conformally related to the corresponding quantity in Minkowski bulk for a massless field. For large values of the length of the compact dimension compared with the AdS curvature radius, the vacuum current decays as power-law for both massless and massive fields. This behavior is essentially different from from the corresponding one in Minkowski background, where the currents for a massive field are suppressed exponentially.

Scalar Casimir densities induced by a cylindrical shell in de Sitter spacetime

We evaluate the positive-frequency Wightman function, the vacuum expectation values (VEVs) of the field squared and the energy-momentum tensor for a massive scalar field with general curvature coupling for a cylindrical shell in background of dS spacetime. The field is prepared in the Bunch-Davies vacuum state and on the shell the corresponding operator obeys Robin boundary condition. In the region inside the shell and for non-Neumann boundary conditions, the Bunch-Davies vacuum is a physically realizable state for all values of the mass and curvature coupling parameter. For both interior and exterior regions, the VEVs are decomposed into boundary-free dS and shell-induced parts. We show that the shell-induced part of the vacuum energy-momentum tensor has a nonzero off-diagonal component corresponding to the energy flux along the radial direction. Unlike to the case of a shell in Minkowski bulk, for dS background the axial stresses are not equal to the energy density. In dependence of the mass and of the coefficient in the boundary condition, the vacuum energy density and the energy flux can be either positive or negative. The influence of the background gravitational field on the boundary-induced effects is crucial at distances from the shell larger than the dS curvature scale. In particular, the decay of the VEVs with the distance is power-law (monotonic or oscillatory with dependence of the mass) for both massless and massive fields. For Neumann boundary condition the decay is faster than that for non-Neumann conditions.

Vacuum currents induced by a magnetic flux around a cosmic string with finite core

We evaluate the Hadamard function and the vacuum expectation value of the current density for a massive complex scalar field in the generalized geometry of a straight cosmic string with a finite core enclosing an arbitrary distributed magnetic flux along the string axis. For the interior geometry, a general cylindrically symmetric static metric tensor is used with finite support. In the region outside the core, both the Hadamard function and the current density are decomposed into the idealized zero-thickness cosmic string and core-induced contributions. The only nonzero component corresponds to the azimuthal current. The zero-thickness part of the latter is a periodic function of the magnetic flux inside the core, with the period equal to the quantum flux. As a consequence of the direct interaction of the quantum field with the magnetic field inside the penetrable core, the core-induced contribution, in general, is not a periodic function of the flux. In addition, the vacuum current, in general, is not a monotonic function of the distance from the string and may change the sign. For a general model of the core interior, we also evaluate the magnetic fields generated by the vacuum current. As applications of the general results, we have considered an impenetrable core modeled by Robin boundary condition, a core with the Minkowski-like interior and a core with a constant positive curvature space. Various exactly solvable distributions of the magnetic flux are discussed.

Wightman function and the Casimir effect for a Robin sphere in a constant curvature space

We evaluate the Wightman function, the mean field squared and the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the energy-momentum tensor for a scalar field with Robin boundary condition on a spherical shell in the background of a constant negative curvature space. For the coefficient in the boundary condition there is a critical value above which the scalar vacuum becomes unstable. In both interior and exterior regions, the VEVs are decomposed into the boundary-free and sphere-induced contributions. For the latter, rapidly convergent integral representations are provided. In the region inside the sphere, the eigenvalues are expressed in terms of the zeros of the combination of the associated Legendre function and its derivative and the decomposition is achieved by making use of the Abel-Plana type summation formula for the series over these zeros. The sphere-induced contribution to the VEV of the field squared is negative for Dirichlet boundary condition and positive for Neumann one. At distances from the sphere larger than the curvature scale of the background space the suppression of the vacuum fluctuations in the gravitational field corresponding to the negative curvature space is stronger compared with the case of the Minkowskian bulk. In particular, the decay of the VEVs with the distance is exponential for both massive and massless fields. The corresponding results are generalized for spaces with spherical bubbles and for cosmological models with negative curvature spaces.

Electromagnetic two-point functions and Casimir densities for a conducting plate in de Sitter spacetime

We evaluate the two-point function for the electromagnetic field tensor in $(D+1)$-dimensional de Sitter spacetime assuming that the field is prepared in Bunch-Davies vacuum state. This two-point function is used for the investigation of the vacuum expectation values (VEVs) of the field squared and the energy-momentum tensor in the presence of a conducting plate. The VEVs are decomposed into the boundary-free and plate-induced parts. For the latter, closed form analytical expressions are given in terms of the hypergeometric function. For $3\leqslant D\leqslant 8$ the plate-induced part in the VEV of the electric field squared is positive everywhere, whereas for $D\geqslant 9$ it is positive near the plate and negative at large distances. The VEV of the energy-momentum tensor, in addition to the diagonal components, contains an off-diagonal component which corresponds to the energy flux along the direction normal to the plate. Simple asymptotic expressions are provided at small and large distances from the plate compared with the de Sitter curvature scale. For $D\geqslant 4$, all the diagonal components of the plate-induced vacuum energy-momentum tensor are negative and the energy flux is directed from the plate.

Electromagnetic two-point functions and the Casimir effect in Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmologies

We evaluate the two-point functions of the electromagnetic field in (D+1) -dimensional spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universes with a power-law scale factor, assuming that the field is prepared in the Bunch-Davies vacuum state. The range of powers are specified in which the two-point functions are infrared convergent and the Bunch-Davies vacuum for the electromagnetic field is a physically realizable state. The two-point functions are applied for the investigation of the vacuum expectation values of the field squared and the energy-momentum tensor, induced by a single and two parallel conducting plates. Unlike to the case of conducting plates in the Minkowski bulk, in the problem under consideration the stresses along the directions parallel to the plates are not equal to the energy density. We show that, in addition to the diagonal components, the vacuum energy-momentum tensor has a nonzero off-diagonal component which describes energy flux along the direction normal to the plates. For a single plate this flux is directed from the plate. The Casimir forces are investigated in the geometry of two plates. At separations between the plates smaller than the curvature radius of the background spacetime, to the leading order, we recover the corresponding result in the Minkowski spacetime and in this case the forces are attractive. At larger separations, the influence of the curvature on the Casimir forces is essential with different asymptotic behavior for decelerated and accelerated expansions. In particular, for the latter case there is a range of powers of the expansion law in which the forces become repulsive at large separations between the plates.

Fermionic Casimir densities in anti-de Sitter spacetime

The fermionic condensate and vacuum expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor, for a massive fermionic field on the background of anti-de Sitter spacetime, in the geometry of two parallel boundaries with bag boundary conditions, are investigated. Vacuum expectation values, expressed as series involving the eigenvalues of the radial quantum number, are neatly decomposed into boundary-free, single-boundary-induced, and second-boundary-induced parts, with the help of the generalized Abel-Plana summation formula. In this way, the renormalization procedure is very conveniently reduced to the one corresponding to boundary-free AdS spacetime. The boundary-induced contributions to the fermionic condensate and to the vacuum expectation value of the energy density are proven to be everywhere negative. The vacuum expectation values are exponentially suppressed at distances from the boundaries much larger than the curvature radius of the AdS space. Near the boundaries, effects related with the curvature of the background spacetime are shown to be subdominant and, to leading order, all known results for boundaries in the Minkowski bulk are recovered. Zeta function techniques are successfully used for the evaluation of the total vacuum energy in the region between the boundaries. It is proven that the resulting interaction forces between them are attractive and that, for large separations, they also decay exponentially. Finally, our results are extended and explicitly translated to fermionic Casimir densities in braneworld scenarios of Randall-Sundrum type.

Fermionic current from topology and boundaries with applications to higher-dimensional models and nanophysics

We investigate combined effects of topology and boundaries on the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the fermionic current in the space with an arbitrary number of toroidally compactified dimensions. As a geometry of boundaries we consider two parallel plates on which the fermion field obeys bag boundary conditions. Along the compact dimensions, periodicity conditions are imposed with arbitrary phases. In addition, the presence of a constant gauge field is assumed. The nontrivial topology gives rise to an Aharonov-Bohm effect for the fermionic current induced by the gauge field. It is shown that the VEV of the charge density vanishes and the current density has nonzero expectation values for the components along compact dimensions only. The latter are periodic odd functions of the magnetic flux with the period equal to the flux quantum. In the region between the plates, the VEV of the fermionic current is decomposed into pure topological, single plate and interference parts. For a massless field the single plate part vanishes and the interference part is distributed uniformly. The corresponding results are generalized for conformally-flat spacetimes. Applications of the general formulas to finite-length carbon nanotubes are given within the framework of the Dirac model for quasiparticles in graphene. In the absence of the magnetic flux, two sublattices of the honeycomb graphene lattice yield opposite contributions and the fermionic current vanishes. A magnetic flux through the cross section of the nanotube breaks the symmetry allowing the current to flow along the compact dimension.

Fermionic current induced by magnetic flux in compactified cosmic string spacetime

In this paper, we investigate the fermionic current densities induced by a magnetic flux running along the idealized cosmic string in a four-dimensional spacetime, admitting that the coordinate along the string's axis is compactified. In order to develop this investigation we construct the complete set of fermionic mode functions obeying a general quasiperiodicity condition along the compactified dimension. The vacuum expectation value of the azimuthal current density is decomposed into two parts. The first one corresponds to the uncompactified cosmic string geometry and the second one is the correction induced by the compactification. For the first part we provide a closed expression which includes various special cases previously discussed in the literature. The second part is an odd periodic function of the magnetic flux along the string axis with the period equal to the flux quantum and it is an even function of the magnetic flux enclosed by the string axis. The compactification of the cosmic string axis in combination with the quasiperiodicity condition leads to the nonzero axial current density. The latter is an even periodic function of the magnetic flux along the string axis and an odd periodic function of the magnetic flux enclosed by the string axis. The axial current density vanishes for untwisted and twisted fields in the absence of the magnetic flux enclosed by the string axis. The asymptotic behavior of the vacuum fermionic current is investigated near the string and at large distances from it. In particular, the topological part of the azimuthal current and the axial current are finite on the string's axis.

Fermionic vacuum polarization by a cosmic string in anti-de Sitter spacetime

In this paper we investigate the fermionic condensate (FC) and the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the energy-momentum tensor, associated with a massive fermionic field, induced by the presence of a cosmic string in the anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime. In order to develop this analysis we construct the complete set of normalized eigenfunctions in the corresponding spacetime. We consider a special case of boundary conditions on the AdS boundary, when the MIT bag boundary condition is imposed on the field operator at a finite distance from the boundary, which is then taken to zero. The FC and the VEV of the energy-momentum tensor are decomposed into the pure AdS and string-induced parts. Because the analysis of one-loop quantum effects in the AdS spacetime has been developed in the literature, here we are mainly interested to investigate the influence of the cosmic string on the VEVs. The string-induced part in the VEV of the energy-momentum tensor is diagonal and the axial and radial stresses are equal to the energy density. For points near the string, the effects of the curvature are subdominant and to leading order, the VEVs coincide with the corresponding VEVs for the cosmic string in Minkowski bulk. At large proper distances from the string, the decay of the VEVs show a power-law dependence of the distance for both massless and massive fields. This is in contrast to the case of Minkowski bulk where, for a massive field, the string-induced parts decay exponentially.

Fermionic vacuum polarization in compactified cosmic string spacetime

We investigate the fermionic condensate (FC) and the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the energy-momentum tensor for a charged massive fermionic field in the geometry of a cosmic string compactified along its axis. In addition, we assume the presence of two types of magnetic fluxes: a flux running along the cosmic string and another enclosed by the compact dimension. These fluxes give rise to Aharanov-Bohm-like effects on the VEVs. The VEVs are decomposed into two parts corresponding to the geometry of a straight cosmic string without compactification plus a topological part induced by the compactification of the string axis. Both contributions are even periodic functions of the magnetic fluxes with period equal to the flux quantum. The vacuum energy density is equal to the radial stress for the parts corresponding to the straight cosmic string and the topological one. Moreover, the axial stress is equal to the energy density for the parts corresponding to the straight cosmic string; however, for massive fermionic field this does not occur for the topological contributions. With respect to the dependence on the magnetic fluxes, both, the fermionic condensate and the vacuum energy density, can be either positive or negative. Moreover, for points near the string, the main contribution to the VEVs comes from the straight cosmic string part, whereas at large distances the topological ones dominate. In addition to the local characteristics of the vacuum state, we also evaluate the part in the topological Casimir energy induced by the string.

Finite temperature fermionic condensate and currents in topologically nontrivial spaces

We investigate the finite temperature fermionic condensate and the expectation values of the charge and current densities for a massive fermion field in a spacetime background with an arbitrary number of toroidally compactified spatial dimensions in the presence of a non-vanishing chemical potential. Periodicity conditions along compact dimensions are taken with arbitrary phases and the presence of a constant gauge field is assumed. The latter gives rise to Aharonov-Bohm-like effects on the expectation values. They are periodic functions of magnetic fluxes enclosed by compact dimensions with the period equal to the flux quantum. The current density has nonzero components along compact dimensions only. Both low- and high-temperature asymptotics of the expectation values are studied. In particular, it has been shown that at high temperatures the current density is exponentially suppressed. This behavior is in sharp contrast with the corresponding asymptotic in the case of a scalar field, where the current density linearly grows with the temperature. The features for the models in odd dimensional spacetimes are discussed. Applications are given to cylindrical and toroidal nanotubes described within the framework of effective Dirac theory for the electronic subsystem.

Scalar and fermionic vacuum currents in de Sitter spacetime with compact dimensions

Vacuum expectation values (VEVs) of the current densities for charged scalar and Dirac spinor fields are investigated in (D+1)-dimensional de Sitter (dS) spacetime with toroidally compactified spatial dimensions. Along compact dimensions we impose quasiperiodicity conditions with arbitrary phases. In addition, the presence of a classical constant gauge field is assumed. The VEVs of the charge density and of the components for the current density along noncompact dimensions vanish. The gauge field leads to Aharonov-Bohm-like oscillations of the components along compact dimensions as functions of the magnetic flux. For small values of the comoving length of a compact dimension, compared with the dS curvature scale, the current density is related to the corresponding current in the Minkowski spacetime by a conformal relation. For large values of the comoving length and for a scalar field, depending on the mass of the field, two different regimes are realized with the monotonic and oscillatory damping of the current density. For a massive spinor field, the decay of the current density is always oscillatory. In supersymmetric models on the background of Minkowski spacetime with equal number of scalar and fermionic degrees of freedom and with the same phases in the periodicity conditions, the total current density vanishes due to the cancellation between the scalar and fermionic parts. The background gravitational field modifies the current densities for scalar and fermionic fields in different ways and for massive fields there is no cancellation in the dS spacetime.

Casimir densities for a spherical boundary in de Sitter spacetime

Two-point functions, mean-squared fluctuations, and the vacuum expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor operator are investigated for a massive scalar field with an arbitrary curvature coupling parameter, subject to a spherical boundary in the background of de Sitter spacetime. The field is prepared in the Bunch-Davies vacuum state and is constrained to satisfy Robin boundary conditions on the sphere. Both the interior and exterior regions are considered. For the calculation in the interior region, a mode-summation method is employed, supplemented with a variant of the generalized Abel-Plana formula. This allows us to explicitly extract the contributions to the expectation values which come from de Sitter spacetime without boundaries. We show that the vacuum energy-momentum tensor is non-diagonal with the off-diagonal component corresponding to the energy flux along the radial direction. With dependence on the boundary condition and the mass of the field, this flux can be either positive or negative. Several limiting cases of interest are then studied. In terms of the curvature coupling parameter and the mass of the field, two very different regimes are realized, which exhibit monotonic and oscillatory behavior of the vacuum expectation values, respectively, far from the sphere. The decay of the boundary induced expectation values at large distances from the sphere is shown to be power-law (monotonic or oscillating), independent of the value of the field mass.

Casimir-Polder interaction between an atom and a conducting wall in cosmic string spacetime

The Casimir-Polder interaction potential is evaluated for a polarizable microparticle and a conducting wall in the geometry of a cosmic string perpendicular to the wall. The general case of the anisotropic polarizability tensor for the microparticle is considered. The corresponding force is a function of the wall-microparticle and cosmic string-microparticle distances. Depending on the orientation of the polarizability tensor principal axes the force can be either attractive or repulsive. The asymptotic behavior of the Casimir-Polder potential is investigated at large and small separations compared to the wavelength of the dominant atomic transitions. We show that the conical defect may be used to control the strength and the sign of the Casimir-Polder force.

Fermionic Casimir densities in a conical space with a circular boundary and magnetic flux

The vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the energy-momentum tensor for a massive fermionic field is investigated in a (2+1)-dimensional conical spacetime in the presence of a circular boundary and an infinitely thin magnetic flux located at the cone apex. The MIT bag boundary condition is assumed on the circle. At the cone apex we consider a special case of boundary conditions for irregular modes, when the MIT bag boundary condition is imposed at a finite radius, which is then taken to zero. The presence of the magnetic flux leads to the Aharonov-Bohm-like effect on the VEV of the energy-momentum tensor. For both exterior and interior regions, the VEV is decomposed into boundary-free and boundary-induced parts. Both these parts are even periodic functions of the magnetic flux with the period equal to the flux quantum. The boundary-free part in the radial stress is equal to the energy density. Near the circle, the boundary-induced part in the VEV dominates and for a massless field the vacuum energy density is negative inside the circle and positive in the exterior region. Various special cases are considered.

Fermionic vacuum polarization by a flat boundary in cosmic string spacetime

In this paper we investigate the fermionic condensate and the renormalized vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the energy-momentum tensor for a massive fermionic field induced by a flat boundary in the cosmic string spacetime. In this analysis we assume that the field operator obeys MIT bag boundary condition on the boundary. We explicitly decompose the VEVs into the boundary-free and boundary-induced parts. General formulas are provided for both parts which are valid for any value of the parameter associated with the cosmic string. For a massless field, the boundary-free part in the fermionic condensate and the boundary-induced part in the energy-momentum tensor vanish. For a massive field the radial stress is equal to the energy density for both boundary-free and boundary-induced parts. The boundary-induced part in the stress along the axis of the cosmic string vanishes. The total energy density is negative everywhere, whereas the effective pressure along the azimuthal direction is positive near the boundary and negative near the cosmic string. We show that for points away from the boundary, the boundary-induced parts in the fermionic condensate and in the VEV of the energy-momentum tensor vanish on the string.

Finite temperature current densities and Bose-Einstein condensation in topologically nontrivial spaces

We investigate the finite temperature expectation values of the charge and current densities for a complex scalar field with nonzero chemical potential in background of a flat spacetime with spatial topology $R^{p}\times (S^{1})^{q}$. Along compact dimensions quasiperiodicity conditions with general phases are imposed on the field. In addition, we assume the presence of a constant gauge field which, due to the nontrivial topology of background space, leads to Aharonov-Bohm-like effects on the expectation values. By using the Abel-Plana-type summation formula and zeta function techniques, two different representations are provided for both the current and charge densities. The current density has nonzero components along the compact dimensions only and, in the absence of a gauge field, it vanishes for special cases of twisted and untwisted scalar fields. In the high-temperature limit, the current density and the topological part in the charge density are linear functions of the temperature. The Bose-Einstein condensation for a fixed value of the charge is discussed. The expression for the chemical potential is given in terms of the lengths of compact dimensions, temperature and gauge field. It is shown that the parameters of the phase transition can be controlled by tuning the gauge field. The separate contributions to the charge and current densities coming from the Bose-Einstein condensate and from excited states are also investigated.

Scalar self-energy for a charged particle in global monopole spacetime with a spherical boundary

We analyze combined effects of the geometry produced by global monopole and a concentric spherical boundary on the self-energy of a point-like scalar charged test particle at rest. We assume that the boundary is outside the monopole's core with a general spherically symmetric inner structure. An important quantity to this analysis is the three-dimensional Green function associated with this system. For both Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions obeyed by the scalar field on the sphere, the Green function presents a structure that contains contributions due to the background geometry of the spacetime and the boundary. Consequently the corresponding induced scalar self-energy present also similar structure. For points near the sphere the boundary-induced part dominates and the self-force is repulsive/attractive with respect to the boundary for Dirichlet/Neumann boundary condition. In the region outside the sphere at large distances from it, the boundary-free part in the self-energy dominates and the corresponding self-force can be either attractive or repulsive with dependence of the curvature coupling parameter for scalar field. In particular, for the minimal coupling we show the presence of a stable equilibrium point for Dirichlet boundary condition. In the region inside the sphere the nature of the self-force depends on the specific model for the monopole's core. As illustrations of the general procedure adopted we shall consider two distinct models, namely flower-pot and the ballpoint-pen ones.

Topological Casimir effect in compactified cosmic string spacetime

We investigate the Wightman function, the vacuum expectation values of the field squared and the energy-momentum tensor for a massive scalar field with general curvature coupling in the generalized cosmic string geometry with a compact dimension along its axis. The boundary condition along the compactified dimension is taken in general form with an arbitrary phase. The vacuum expectation values are decomposed into two parts. The first one corresponds to the uncompactified cosmic string geometry and the second one is the correction induced by the compactification. The asymptotic behavior of the vacuum expectation values of the field squared, energy density and stresses are investigated near the string and at large distances. We show that the nontrivial topology due to the cosmic string enhances the vacuum polarization effects induced by the compactness of spatial dimension for both the field squared and the vacuum energy density. A simple formula is given for the part of the integrated topological Casimir energy induced by the planar angle deficit. The results are generalized for a charged scalar field in the presence of a constant gauge field. In this case, the vacuum expectation values are periodic functions of the component of the vector potential along the compact dimension.

Vacuum polarization induced by a cosmic string in anti-de Sitter spacetime

In this paper we investigate the vacuum expectation values (VEVs) of the field squared and the energy-momentum tensor associated with a massive scalar quantum field induced by a generalized cosmic string in D-dimensional anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime. In order to develop this analysis we evaluate the corresponding Wightman function. As we shall observe, this function is expressed as the sum of two terms: the first one corresponds to the Wightman function in pure AdS bulk and the second one is induced by the presence of the string. The second contribution is finite at coincidence limit and is used to provide closed expressions for the parts in the VEVs of the field squared and the energy-momentum tensor induced by the presence of the string. Because the analysis of vacuum polarizations effects in pure AdS spacetime have been developed in the literature, here we are mainly interested in the investigation of string-induced effects. We show that the curvature of the background spacetime has an essential influence on the VEVs at distances larger than the curvature radius. In particular, at large distances the decay of the string-induced VEVs is power-law for both massless and massive fields. The string-induced parts vanish on the AdS boundary and they dominate the pure AdS part for points near the AdS horizon.

Casimir effect for parallel metallic plates in cosmic string spacetime

We evaluate the renormalized vacuum expectation values (VEVs) of electric and magnetic fields squared and the energy-momentum tensor for the electromagnetic field in the geometry of two parallel conducting plates on background of cosmic string spacetime. On the base of these results, the Casimir-Polder force on a polarizable particle and the Casimir forces acting on the plates are investigated. The VEVs are decomposed into the pure string and plate-induced parts. The VEV of the electric field squared is negative for points with radial distance to the string smaller than the distance to the plates and positive for the opposite situation. On the other hand the VEV for the magnetic field squared is negative everywhere. The boundary induced part in the VEV of the energy-momentum tensor is different from zero in the region between the plates only. Moreover, this part only depends on the distance from the string. The boundary-induced part in the vacuum energy density is positive for points with distance to the string smaller than the distance to the plates and negative in opposite situation. The Casimir stresses on the plates depend non-monotonically on the distance from the string. We show that the Casimir forces acting on the plates are always attractive.

The vacuum expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor and the Casimir forces are investigated for a massive scalar field with an arbitrary curvature coupling parameter in the geometry of two parallel plates, on the background of de Sitter spacetime. The field is prepared in the Bunch--Davies vacuum state and is constrained to satisfy Robin boundary conditions on the plates. The vacuum energy-momentum tensor is non-diagonal, with the off-diagonal component corresponding to the energy flux along the direction normal to the plates. It is shown that the curvature of the background spacetime decisively influences the behavior of the Casimir forces at separations larger than the curvature radius of de Sitter spacetime. In dependence of the curvature coupling parameter and the mass of the field, two different regimes are realized, which exhibit monotonic or oscillatory behavior of the forces. The decay of the Casimir force at large plate separation is shown to be power-law, with independence of the value of the field mass.

Casimir-Polder potential for a metallic cylinder in cosmic string spacetime

Casimir-Polder potential is investigated for a polarizable microparticle in the geometry of a straight cosmic string with a metallic cylindrical shell. The electromagnetic field Green tensor is evaluated on the imaginary frequency axis. The expressions for the Casimir-Polder potential is derived in the general case of anisotropic polarizability for the both interior and exterior regions of the shell. The potential is decomposed into pure string and shell-induced parts. The latter dominates for points near the shell, whereas the pure string part is dominant near the string and at large distances from the shell. For the isotropic case and in the region inside the shell the both pure string and shell-induced parts in the Casimir-Polder force are repulsive with respect to the string. In the exterior region the shell-induced part of the force is directed toward the cylinder whereas the pure string part remains repulsive with respect to the string. At large distances from the shell the total force is repulsive.

Fermionic condensate and Casimir densities in the presence of compact dimensions with applications to nanotubes

We investigate the fermionic condensate and the vacuum expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor for a massive fermionic field in the geometry of two parallel plate on the background of Minkowski spacetime with an arbitrary number of toroidally compactified spatial dimensions, in the presence of a constant gauge field. Bag boundary conditions are imposed on the plates and periodicity conditions with arbitrary phases are considered along the compact dimensions. The boundary induced parts in the fermionic condensate and the vacuum energy density are negative, with independence of the phases in the periodicity conditions and of the value of the gauge potential. Interaction forces between the plates are thus always attractive. However, in physical situations where the quantum field is confined to the region between the plates, the pure topological part contributes as well, and then the resulting force can be either attractive or repulsive, depending on the specific phases encoded in the periodicity conditions along the compact dimensions, and on the gauge potential, too. Applications of the general formulas to cylindrical carbon nanotubes are considered, within the framework of a Dirac-like theory for the electronic states in graphene. In the absence of a magnetic flux, the energy density for semiconducting nanotubes is always negative. For metallic nanotubes the energy density is positive for long tubes and negative for short ones. The resulting Casimir forces acting on the edges of the nanotube are attractive for short tubes with independence of the tube chirality. The sign of the force for long nanotubes can be controlled by tuning the magnetic flux. This opens the way to the design of efficient actuators driven by the Casimir force at the nanoscale.

Fermionic condensate in a conical space with a circular boundary and magnetic flux

The fermionic condensate is investigated in a (2+1)-dimensional conical spacetime in the presence of a circular boundary and a magnetic flux. It is assumed that on the boundary the fermionic field obeys the MIT bag boundary condition. For irregular modes, we consider a special case of boundary conditions at the cone apex, when the MIT bag boundary condition is imposed at a finite radius, which is then taken to zero. The fermionic condensate is a periodic function of the magnetic flux with the period equal to the flux quantum. For both exterior and interior regions, the fermionic condensate is decomposed into boundary-free and boundary-induced parts. Two integral representations are given for the boundary-free part for arbitrary values of the opening angle of the cone and magnetic flux. At distances from the boundary larger than the Compton wavelength of the fermion particle, the condensate decays exponentially with the decay rate depending on the opening angle of the cone. If the ratio of the magnetic flux to the flux quantum is not a half-integer number, for a massless field the boundary-free part in the fermionic condensate vanishes, whereas the boundary-induced part is negative. For half-integer values of the ratio of the magnetic flux to the flux quantum, the irregular mode gives non-zero contribution to the fermionic condensate in the boundary-free conical space.

Optical transition radiation in presence of acoustic waves for an oblique incidence

Forward transition radiation is considered in an ultrasonic superlattice excited in a finite thickness plate under oblique incidence of relativistic electrons. We investigate the influence of acoustic waves on both the intensity and polarization of the radiation. In the quasi-classical approximation, formulas are derived for the vector potential of the electromagnetic field and for the spectral-angular distribution of the radiation intensity. It is shown that the acoustic waves generate new resonance peaks in the spectral and angular distributions. The heights and the location of the peaks can be controlled by choosing the parameters of the acoustic wave. The numerical examples are given for a plate of fused quartz.

Repulsive Casimir-Polder forces from cosmic strings

We investigate the Casimir-Polder force acting on a polarizable microparticle in the geometry of a straight cosmic string. In order to develop this analysis we evaluate the electromagnetic field Green tensor on the imaginary frequency axis. The expression for the Casimir-Polder force is derived in the general case of anisotropic polarizability. In dependence of the eigenvalues for the polarizability tensor and of the orientation of its principal axes, the Casimir-Polder force can be either repulsive or attractive. Moreover, there are situations where the force changes the sign with separation. We show that for an isotropic polarizability tensor the force is always repulsive. At large separations between the microparticle and the string, the force varies inversely as the fifth power of the distance. In the non-retarded regime, corresponding to separations smaller than the relevant transition wavelengths, the force decays as the inverse fourth power of the distance. In the case of anisotropic polarizability, the dependence of the Casimir-Polder potential on the orientation of the polarizability tensor principal axes also leads to the moment of force acting on the particle.

Synchrotron radiation inside a dielectric cylinder

We investigate the electromagnetic fields generated by a charged particle rotating inside a dielectric cylinder immersed into a homogeneous medium. The expressions for the bound modes of the radiation field are derived in both interior and exterior regions. The radiation intensity for the modes propagating inside the cylinder is evaluated by using two different ways: by evaluating the work done by the radiation field on the charge and by evaluating the energy flux through the cross-section of the cylinder. The relation between these two quantities is discussed. We investigate the relative contributions of the bound modes and the modes propagating at large distances from the cylinder to the total radiation intensity. Numerical examples are given for a dielectric cylinder in the vacuum. It is shown that the presence of the cylinder can lead to the considerable increase of the synchrotron radiation intensity.

Vacuum polarization by a flat boundary in cosmic string spacetime

In this paper we analyze the vacuum expectation values of the field squared and the energy-momentum tensor associated to a massive scalar field in a higher dimensional cosmic string spacetime, obeying Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions on the surface orthogonal to the string. In order to develop this analysis the corresponding Green function is obtained. The Green function is given by the sum of two expressions: the first one corresponds to the standard Green function in the boundary-free cosmic string spacetime and the second contribution is induced by the boundary. The boundary induced parts have opposite signs for Dirichlet and Neumann scalars. Because the analysis of vacuum polarization effects in the boundary-free cosmic string spacetime have been developed in the literature, here we are mainly interested in the calculations of the effects induced by the boundary. In this way closed expressions for the corresponding expectation values are provided, as well as their asymptotic behavior in different limiting regions is investigated. We show that the non-trivial topology due to the cosmic string enhances the boundary induced vacuum polarization effects for both field squared and the energy-momentum tensor, compared to the case of a boundary in Minkowski spacetime. The presence of the cosmic string induces non-zero stress along the direction normal to the boundary. The corresponding vacuum force acting on the boundary is investigated.

Casimir effect for curved boundaries in Robertson-Walker spacetime

Vacuum expectation values of the energy-momentum tensor and the Casimir forces are evaluated for scalar and electromagnetic fields in the geometry of two curved boundaries on background of the Robertson-Walker spacetime with negative spatial curvature. Robin boundary conditions are imposed in the case of the scalar field and perfect conductor boundary conditions are assumed for the electromagnetic field. We use the conformal relation between the Robertson-Walker and Rindler spacetimes and the corresponding results for two parallel plates moving with uniform proper acceleration through the Fulling-Rindler vacuum. For the general scale factor the vacuum energy-momentum tensor is decomposed into the boundary free and boundary induced parts. The latter is non-diagonal. The Casimir forces are directed along the normals to the boundaries. For Dirichlet and Neumann scalars and for the electromagnetic field these forces are attractive for all separations.

Casimir effect for parallel plates in de Sitter spacetime

The Wightman function and the vacuum expectation values of the field squared and of the energy-momentum tensor are obtained, for a massive scalar field with an arbitrary curvature coupling parameter, in the region between two infinite parallel plates, on the background of de Sitter spacetime. The field is prepared in the Bunch-Davies vacuum state and is constrained to satisfy Robin boundary conditions on the plates. For the calculation, a mode-summation method is used, supplemented with a variant of the generalized Abel-Plana formula. This allows to explicitly extract the contributions to the expectation values which come from each single boundary, and to expand the second-plate-induced part in terms of exponentially convergent integrals. Several limiting cases of interest are then studied. Moreover, the Casimir forces acting on the plates are evaluated, and it is shown that the curvature of the background spacetime decisively influences the behavior of these forces at separations larger than the curvature scale of de Sitter spacetime. In terms of the curvature coupling parameter and the mass of the field, two very different regimes are realized, which exhibit monotonic and oscillatory behavior of the vacuum expectation values, respectively. The decay of the Casimir force at large plate separation is shown to be power-law (monotonic or oscillating), with independence of the value of the field mass.

Fermionic current densities induced by magnetic flux in a conical space with a circular boundary

We investigate the vacuum expectation value of the fermionic current induced by a magnetic flux in a (2+1)-dimensional conical spacetime in the presence of a circular boundary. On the boundary the fermionic field obeys MIT bag boundary condition. For irregular modes, a special case of boundary conditions at the cone apex is considered, when the MIT bag boundary condition is imposed at a finite radius, which is then taken to zero. We observe that the vacuum expectation values for both charge density and azimuthal current are periodic functions of the magnetic flux with the period equal to the flux quantum whereas the expectation value of the radial component vanishes. For both exterior and interior regions, the expectation values of the current are decomposed into boundary-free and boundary-induced parts. For a massless field the boundary-free part in the vacuum expectation value of the charge density vanishes, whereas the presence of the boundary induces nonzero charge density. Two integral representations are given for the boundary-free part in the case of a massive fermionic field for arbitrary values of the opening angle of the cone and magnetic flux. The behavior of the induced fermionic current is investigated in various asymptotic regions of the parameters. At distances from the boundary larger than the Compton wavelength of the fermion particle, the vacuum expectation values decay exponentially with the decay rate depending on the opening angle of the cone. We make a comparison with the results already known from the literature for some particular cases.

Fermionic vacuum polarization by a cosmic string in de Sitter spacetime

We investigate the fermionic condensate and the vacuum expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor for a massive spinor field in the geometry of a straight cosmic string on background of de Sitter spacetime. By using the Abel-Plana summation formula, we explicitly extract form the expectation values the contribution associated with purely de Sitter space, remaining the expectation values induced by the cosmic string. The latter presents information about de Sitter gravity as well. Because the investigation of the fermionic quantum fluctuations in de Sitter space have been investigated in literature, here we are mainly interested in the cosmic string-induced contributions. For a massless field, the fermionic condensate vanishes and the presence of the string does not break chiral symmetry of the massless theory. Unlike to the case of a scalar field, for a massive fermionic field the vacuum expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor is diagonal and the axial and radial stresses are equal to the energy density. At large distances from the string the behavior of the string-induced parts in the vacuum densities is damping oscillatory with the amplitude decaying as the inverse fourth power of the distance. This is in contrast to the case of flat spacetime, in which the string-induced vacuum densities for a massive field decay exponentially with distance from the string. In the limit of the large curvature radius of de Sitter space we recover the results for a cosmic string in flat spacetime.

Induced fermionic current in toroidally compactified spacetimes with applications to cylindrical and toroidal nanotubes

The vacuum expectation value of the fermionic current is evaluated for a massive spinor field in spacetimes with an arbitrary number of toroidally compactified spatial dimensions in presence of a constant gauge field. By using the Abel-Plana type summation formula and the zeta function technique we present the fermionic current in two different forms. Non-trivial topology of the background spacetime leads to the Aharonov-Bohm effect on the fermionic current induced by the gauge field. The current is a periodic function of the magnetic flux with the period equal to the flux quantum. In the absence of the gauge field it vanishes for special cases of untwisted and twisted fields. Applications of the general formulae to Kaluz-Klein type models and to cylindrical and toroidal carbon nanotubes are given. In the absence of magnetic flux the total fermionic current in carbon nanotubes vanishes, due to the cancellation of contributions from two different sublattices of the graphene hexagonal lattice.

We consider the radiation from an electron in flight over a surface wave of an arbitrary profile excited in a plane interface. For an electron bunch the conditions are specified under which the overall radiation essentially exceeds the incoherent part. It is shown that the radiation from the bunch with asymmetric density distribution of electrons in the longitudinal direction is partially coherent for waves with wavelengths much shorter than the characteristic longitudinal size of the bunch.

In order to generate the vacuum densities we use the conformal relation between the Robertson-Walker and Rindler spacetimes and the corresponding results for a plate moving by uniform proper acceleration through the Fulling--Rindler vacuum. For the general case of the scale factor the vacuum energy-momentum tensor is presented as the sum of the boundary free and boundary induced parts.

Fermionic Casimir densities in toroidally compactified spacetimes with applications to nanotubes

Fermionic condensate and the vacuum expectation values of the energy-momentum tensor are investigated for a massive spinor fields in higher-dimensional spacetimes with an arbitrary number of toroidally compactified spatial dimensions. By using the Abel-Plana summation formula and the zeta function technique we present the vacuum expectation values in two different forms. Applications of the general formulae to cylindrical and toroidal carbon nanotubes are given. We show that the topological Casimir energy is positive for metallic cylindrical nanotubes and is negative for semiconducting ones. The toroidal compactification of a cylindrical nanotube along its axis increases the Casimir energy for metallic-type (periodic) boundary conditions along its axis and decreases the Casimir energy for the semiconducting-type compactifications.

Fermionic Casimir effect for parallel plates in the presence of compact dimensions with applications to nanotubes

We evaluate the Casimir energy and force for a massive fermionic field in the geometry of two parallel plates on background of Minkowski spacetime with an arbitrary number of toroidally compactified spatial dimensions. The bag boundary conditions are imposed on the plates and periodicity conditions with arbitrary phases are considered along the compact dimensions. The Casimir energy is decomposed into purely topological, single plate and interaction parts. With independence of the lengths of the compact dimensions and the phases in the periodicity conditions, the interaction part of the Casimir energy is always negative. In order to obtain the resulting force, the contributions from both sides of the plates must be taken into account. Then, the forces coming from the topological parts of the vacuum energy cancel out and only the interaction term contributes to the Casimir force. Applications of the general formulae to Kaluza-Klein type models and carbon nanotubes are given. In particular, we show that for finite length metallic nanotubes the Casimir forces acting on the tube edges are always attractive, whereas for semiconducting-type ones they are attractive for small lengths of the nanotube and repulsive for large lengths.

Vacuum fluctuations and topological Casimir effect in Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmologies with compact dimensions

We investigate the Wightman function, the vacuum expectation values of the field squared and the energy-momentum tensor for a massless scalar field with general curvature coupling parameter in spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universes with an arbitrary number of toroidally compactified dimensions. The topological parts in the expectation values are explicitly extracted and in this way the renormalization is reduced to that for the model with trivial topology. In the limit when the comoving lengths of the compact dimensions are very short compared to the Hubble length, the topological parts coincide with those for a conformal coupling and they are related to the corresponding quantities in the flat spacetime by standard conformal transformation. In the opposite limit of large comoving lengths of the compact dimensions, in dependence of the curvature coupling parameter, two regimes are realized with monotonic or oscillatory behavior of the vacuum expectation values. In the monotonic regime and for nonconformally and nonminimally coupled fields the vacuum stresses are isotropic and the equation of state for the topological parts in the energy density and pressures is of barotropic type. In the oscillatory regime, the amplitude of the oscillations for the topological part in the expectation value of the field squared can be either decreasing or increasing with time, whereas for the energy-momentum tensor the oscillations are damping.

Casimir densities for wedge-shaped boundaries

The vacuum expectation values of the field squared and the energy-momentum tensor are investigated for a scalar field with Dirichlet boundary conditions and for the electromagnetic field inside a wedge with a coaxial cylindrical boundary. In the case of the electromagnetic field perfectly conducting boundary conditions are assumed on the bounding surfaces. By using the Abel-Plana-type formula for the series over the zeros of the Bessel function, the vacuum expectation values are presented in the form of the sum of two terms. The first one corresponds to the geometry without a cylindrical boundary and the second one is induced by the presence of the cylindrical shell. The additional vacuum forces acting on the wedge sides due the presence of the cylindrical boundary are evaluated and it is shown that these forces are attractive for both scalar and electromagnetic fields.

Coherent bremsstrahlung in periodically deformed crystals with a complex base

In the present paper we investigate coherent bremsstrahlung of high energy electrons moving in a periodically deformed single crystal with a complex base. The formula for corresponding differential cross-section is derived for an arbitrary deformation field. The conditions are discussed under which the influence of the deformation is important. The case is considered in detail when the electron enters into the crystal at small angles with respect to a crystallographic axis. It is shown that in dependence of the parameters, the presence of the deformation can either enhance or reduce the bremsstrahlung cross-section.

We investigate the electromagnetic field generated by a point charge moving along a helical trajectory inside a circular waveguide with conducting walls filled by homogeneous dielectric. The parts corresponding to the radiation field are separated and the formulae for the radiation intensity are derived for both TE and TM waves. It is shown that the main part of the radiated quanta is emitted in the form of the TE waves. Various limiting cases are considered. The results of the numerical calculations show that the insertion of the waveguide provides an additional mechanism for tuning the characteristics of the emitted radiation by choosing the parameters of the waveguide and filling medium.

Wightman function, the vacuum expectation values of the field square and the energy-momentum tensor are evaluated for a scalar field obeying the Robin boundary conditions on two spherical branes in (D+1)-dimensional Rindler-like spacetime $Ri\times S^{D-1}$, with a two-dimensional Rindler spacetime $Ri$. This spacetime approximates the near horizon geometry of (D+1)-dimensional black hole. By using the generalized Abel-Plana formula, the vacuum expectation values are presented as the sum of single brane and second brane induced parts. Various limiting cases are studied. The vacuum forces acting on the branes are decomposed into the self-action and interaction terms. The interaction forces are investigated as functions of the brane locations and coefficients in the boundary conditions.

Casimir densities for a spherical brane in Rindler-like spacetimes

Wightman function, the vacuum expectation values of the field square and the energy-momentum tensor are evaluated for a scalar field obeying mixed boundary condition on a spherical brane in (D+1)-dimensional Rindler-like spacetime $Ri\times S^{D-1}$, where $Ri$ is a two-dimensional Rindler spacetime. This spacetime approximates the near horizon geometry of (D+1) -dimensional black hole in the large mass limit. The vacuum expectation values are presented as the sum of boundary-free and brane-induced parts. Further we extract from the Wightman function for the boundary-free geometry the corresponding function in the bulk $R^{2}\times S^{D-1}$. For the latter geometry the vacuum expectation values of the field square and the energy-momentum tensor do not depend on the spacetime point. For the renormalization of these quantities we use zeta regularization technique. Various limiting cases of the brane-induced vacuum expectation values are investigated.

On the influence of acoustic waves on coherent bremsstrahlung in crystals

We investigate the coherent bremsstrahlung by relativistic electrons in a single crystal excited by hypersonic vibrations. The formula for the corresponding differential cross-section is derived in the case of a sinusoidal wave. The conditions are specified under which the influence of the hypersound is essential. The case is considered in detail when the electron enters into the crystal at small angles with respect to a crystallographic axis. It is shown that in dependence of the parameters, the presence of hypersonic waves can either enhance or reduce the bremsstrahlung cross-section.
