Skyrmion-skyrmion interaction induced by itinerant electrons in a ferromagnetic strip

Magnetic skyrmions are promising spin textures for building next-generation magnetic memories and spintronic devices. Nevertheless, one of the major challenges in realizing skyrmion-based devices is the stabilization of ordered arrays of these spin textures in different geometries. Here we numerically study the skyrmion-skyrmion interaction potential that arises due to the dynamics of itinerant electrons coupled to the magnetic texture in a ferromagnetic background with racetrack geometry. We consider different topological textures (ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM)), namely: skyrmions, antiskyrmions and biskyrmions. We show that at low electron filling, for sufficiently short separation, the skyrmions strongly couple each other yielding a bound-state bound by electronic dynamics. However, when the filling is increased, the interaction potential energy presents local minima at specific values of the skyrmion-skyrmion distance. Each of these local minima correspond to energetically stable positions of skyrmions which are "protected" by well defined energy barriers. By inspecting the local charge density, we find that in the case of AFM skyrmions, the local antiferromagnetic nature prevents electronic penetration into the core, allowing the AFM skyrmions to be seen as infinite potential barriers for electrons.

Chiral phase transition and thermal Hall effect in an anisotropic spin model on the kagome lattice

We present a study of the thermal Hall effect in the extended Heisenberg model with $XXZ$ anisotropy in the kagome lattice. This model has the particularity that, in the classical case, and for a broad region in parameter space, an external magnetic field induces a chiral symmetry breaking: the ground state is a doubly degenerate $q=0$ order with either positive or negative net chirality. Here, we focus on the effect of this chiral phase transition in the thermal Hall conductivity using Linear-Spin-Waves theory. We explore the topology and calculate the Chern numbers of the magnonic bands, obtaining a variety of topological phase transitions. We also compute the magnonic effect to the critical temperature associated with the chiral phase transition ($T_c^{SW}$). Our main result is that, the thermal Hall conductivity, which is null for $T>T_c^{SW}$, becomes non-zero as a consequence of the spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking at low temperatures. Therefore, we present a simple model where it is possible to "switch" on/off the thermal transport properties introducing a magnetic field and heating or cooling the system.

Topological phase transition driven by magnetic field and topological Hall effect in an antiferromagnetic skyrmion lattice

The topological Hall effect (THE), given by a composite of electric and topologically non-trivial spin texture is commonly observed in magnetic skyrmion crystals. Here we present a study of the THE of electrons coupled to antiferromagnetic Skyrmion lattices (AF-SkX). We show that, in the strong Hund coupling limit, topologically non-trivial phases emerge at specific fillings. Interestingly, at low filling an external field controlling the magnetic texture, drives the system from a conventional insulator phase to a phase exhibiting THE. Such behavior suggests the occurrence of a topological transition which is confirmed by a closing of the bulk-gap that is followed by its reopening, appearing simultaneously with a single pair of helical edge states. This transition is further verified by the calculation of the the Chern numbers and Berry curvature. We also compute a variety of observables in order to quantify the THE, namely: Hall conductivity and the orbital magnetization of electrons moving in the AF-SkX texture.

Field induced multiple order-by-disorder state selection in antiferromagnetic honeycomb bilayer lattice

In this paper we present a detailed study of the antiferromagnetic classical Heisenberg model on a bilayer honeycomb lattice in a highly frustrated regime in presence of a magnetic field. This study shows strong evidence of entropic order-by-disorder selection in different sectors of the magnetization curve. For antiferromagnetic couplings $J_1=J_x=J_p/3$, we find that at low temperatures there are two different regions in the magnetization curve selected by this mechanism with different number of soft and zero modes. These regions present broken $Z_2$ symmetry and are separated by a not fully collinear classical plateau at $M=1/2$. At higher temperatures, there is a crossover from the conventional paramagnet to a cooperative magnet. Finally, we also discuss the low temperature behavior of the system for a less frustrated region, $J_1=J_x<J_p/3$.

Intermediate magnetisation state and competing orders in Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ and Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$

Among the frustrated magnetic materials, spin-ice stands out as a particularly interesting system. Residual entropy, freezing and glassiness, Kasteleyn transitions and fractionalisation of excitations in three dimensions all stem from a simple classical Hamiltonian. But is the usual spin-ice Hamiltonian a correct description of the experimental systems? Here we address this issue by measuring magnetic susceptibility in the two most studied spin-ice compounds, Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ and Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, using a vector magnet. Using these results, and guided by a theoretical analysis of possible distortions to the pyrochlore lattice, we construct an effective Hamiltonian and explore it using Monte Carlo simulations. We show how this Hamiltonian reproduces the experimental results, including the formation of a phase of intermediate polarisation, and gives important information about the possible ground-state of real spin-ice systems. Our work suggests an unusual situation in which distortions might contribute to the preservation rather than relief of the effects of frustration.

Metastable and scaling regimes of a one-dimensional Kawasaki dynamics

We investigate the large-time scaling regimes arising from a variety of metastable structures in a chain of Ising spins with both first- and second-neighbor couplings while subject to a Kawasaki dynamics. Depending on the ratio and sign of these former, different dynamic exponents are suggested by finite-size scaling analyses of relaxation times. At low but nonzero-temperatures these are calculated via exact diagonalizations of the evolution operator in finite chains under several activation barriers. In the absence of metastability the dynamics is always diffusive.

Three-sublattice Skyrmion crystal in the antiferromagnetic triangular lattice

The frustrated classical antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions on the triangular lattice is studied under a magnetic field by means of semiclassical calculations and large-scale Monte Carlo simulations. We show that even a small DM interaction induces the formation of an Antiferromagnetic Skyrmion crystal (AF-SkX) state. Unlike what is observed in ferromagnetic materials, we show that the AF-SkX state consists of three interpenetrating Skyrmion crystals (one by sublattice), and most importantly, the AF-SkX state seems to survive in the limit of zero temperature. To characterize the phase diagram we compute the average of the topological order parameter which can be associated to the number of topological charges or Skyrmions. As the magnetic field increases this parameter presents a clear jump, indicating a discontinuous transition from a spiral phase into the AF-SkX phase, where multiple Bragg peaks coexist in the spin structure factor. For higher fields, a second (probably continuous) transition occurs into a featureless paramagnetic phase.

Magnetization plateaux and jumps in a frustrated four-leg spin tube under a magnetic field

We study the ground state phase diagram of a frustrated spin-1/2 four-leg spin tube in an external magnetic field. We explore the parameter space of this model in the regime of all-antiferromagnetic exchange couplings by means of three different approaches: analysis of low-energy effective Hamiltonian (LEH), a Hartree variational approach (HVA) and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) for finite clusters. We find that in the limit of weakly interacting plaquettes, low-energy singlet, triplet and quintuplet states play an important role in the formation of fractional magnetization plateaux. We study the transition regions numerically and analytically, and find that they are described, at first order in a strong- coupling expansion, by an XXZ spin-1/2 chain in a magnetic field; the second-order terms give corrections to the XXZ model. All techniques provide consistent results which allow us to predict the existence of fractional plateaux in an important region in the space of parameters of the model.

Spin-phonon induced magnetic order in Kagome ice

We study the effects of lattice deformations on the Kagome spin ice, with Ising spins coupled by nearest neighbor exchange and long range dipolar interactions, in the presence of in-plane magnetic fields. We describe the lattice energy according to the Einstein model, where each site distortion is treated independently. Upon integration of lattice degrees of freedom, effective quadratic spin interactions arise. Classical MonteCarlo simulations are performed on the resulting model, retaining up to third neighbor interactions, under different directions of the magnetic field. We find that, as the effect of the deformation is increased, a rich plateau structure appears in the magnetization curves.

Broken discrete symmetries in a frustrated honeycomb antiferromagnet

We study the magnetic phase diagram of the $J_1$--$J_2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a honeycomb lattice at the strongly frustrated point $J_2/J_1=1/2$ using large-scale Monte Carlo simulations. At low temperatures we find three different field regimes, each characterized by different broken discrete symmetries. In low magnetic fields up to $h_{c1}/J_1\approx 2.9$ the $Z_3$ rotational lattice symmetry is spontaneously broken while a 1/2-magnetization plateau is stabilized around $h_{c2}/J_1=4$. The collinear plateau state and the coplanar state in higher fields break the $Z_4$ translational symmetry and correspond to triple-$q$ magnetic structures. The intermediate phase $h_{c1}<h<h_{c2}$ has an interesting symmetry structure, breaking simultaneously the $Z_3$ and $Z_4$ symmetries. At much lower temperatures the spatial broken discrete symmetries coexist with the quasi long-range order of the transverse spin components.

Quantum phases of a frustrated four-leg spin tube

We study the ground state phase diagram of a frustrated spin-1/2 four-leg tube. Using a variety of complementary techniques, namely density matrix renormalization group, exact diagonalization, Schwinger boson mean field theory, quantum Monte-Carlo and series expansion, we explore the parameter space of this model in the regime of all-antiferromagnetic exchange. In contrast to unfrustrated four-leg tubes we uncover a rich phase diagram. Apart from the Luttinger liquid fixed point in the limit of decoupled legs, this comprises several gapped ground states, namely a plaquette, an incommensurate, and an antiferromagnetic quasi spin-2 chain phase. The transitions between these phases are analyzed in terms of total energy and static structure factor calculations and are found to be of (weak) first order. Despite the absence of long range order in the quantum case, remarkable similarities to the classical phase diagram are uncovered, with the exception of the icommensurate regime, which is strongly renormalized by quantum fluctuations. In the limit of large leg exchange the tube exhibits a deconfinement cross-over from gapped magnon like excitations to spinons.

Anharmonic effects in magnetoelastic chains

We describe a new mechanism leading to the formation of rational magnetization plateau phases, which is mainly due to the anharmonic spin-phonon coupling. This anharmonicity produces plateaux in the magnetization curve at unexpected values of the magnetization without explicit magnetic frustration in the Hamiltonian and without an explicit breaking of the translational symmetry. These plateau phases are accompanied by magneto-elastic deformations which are not present in the harmonic case.

Evidence of a spin liquid phase in the frustrated honeycomb lattice

In the present paper we present some new data supporting the existence of a spin-disordered phase in the Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice with antiferromagnetic interactions up to third neighbors along the line J2=J3, predicted in [Phys. Rev. B 83, 094506 (2011)]. We use the Schwinger boson technique followed by a mean field decoupling and exact diagonalization for small systems to show the existence of an intermediate phase with a spin gap and short range Néel correlations in the strong quantum limit (S=1/2).

Quantum disordered phase on the frustrated honeycomb lattice

In the present paper we study the phase diagram of the Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice with antiferromagnetic interactions up to third neighbors along the line $J_2=J_3$ that include the point $J_2=J_3=J_1/2$, corresponding to the highly frustrated point where the classical ground state has macroscopic degeneracy. Using the Linear Spin-Wave, Schwinger boson technique followed by a mean field decoupling and exact diagonalization for small systems we find an intermediate phase with a spin gap and short range Néel correlations in the strong quantum limit (S=1/2). All techniques provide consistent results which allow us to predict the existence of a quantum disordered phase, which may have been observed in recent high-field ESR measurements in manganites.

Coexisting orders in the quarter-filled Hubbard chain with elastic deformations

The electronic properties of the quarter-filled extended Peierls-Holstein-Hubbard model that includes lattice distortions and molecular deformations are investigated theoretically using the bosonization approach. We predict the existence of a wide variety of charge-elastic phases depending of the values of the Peierls and Holstein couplings. We include the effect of the Peierls deformation in the nearest-neighbor repulsion V, that may be present in real materials where Coulomb interactions depend strongly on the distance, and we show that the phase diagram changes substantially for large V when this term is taken into account.
