Three-dimensional imaging of hadrons with hard exclusive reactions: advances in experiment, theory, phenomenology, and lattice QCD

Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) have emerged as a powerful framework for exploring the internal structure of hadrons in terms of their partonic constituents. Over the past three decades, the field has witnessed significant theoretical and experimental advancements. The interpretation of GPDs in impact parameter space offers a vivid three-dimensional visualization of hadron structure, correlating longitudinal momentum and transverse spatial distributions, thereby enabling tomographic imaging of hadrons. Furthermore, the link between GPDs and the matrix elements of the QCD energy-momentum tensor provides access to fundamental properties of hadrons, including spin decomposition and internal pressure distributions. Notably, recent analyses of Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) data have enabled the empirical extraction of the quark pressure profile inside the proton. This white paper presents an overview of recent developments in GPD theory and phenomenology, as well as progress in lattice QCD studies. It outlines the prospects for advancing our understanding of hadron structure through the next generation of dedicated experiments, including the extension of the Jefferson Lab 12~GeV program (and its potential 22~GeV upgrade), J-PARC, COMPASS/AMBER, LHC ultra-peripheral collisions, and the future electron-ion colliders EIC and EicC.

Photoproduction of Theta baryon from the neutron

We study photoproduction reactions for Theta^+, which was recently observed as a candidate of an exotic five quark state uudd(bar s). We employ effective lagrangian interactions in the linear and non-linear formalism of chiral symmetry and investigate two cases of spin and parity of Theta^+, J^P = 1/2^+ and 1/2^-. We calculate cross sections and discuss possibilities to discriminate one from the other.

SU(3) Symmetry Breaking and Polarized Parton Densities

We analyze the semileptonic weak decays of the octet baryons in a "model independent" approach, based on the algebraic structure of the Chiral Quark-Soliton Model. We argue that this analysis is in fact more general than the model itself. While the symmetry breaking for the semileptonic decays themselves is not strong, other quantities like $Δs$ and $ΔΣ$ are much more affected. We calculate $ΔΣ$ and $Δq$ for all octet baryons. Unfortunately, large experimental errors of $Ξ^-$ decays propagate in our analysis, in particular, in the case of $ΔΣ$ and $Δs$. Only if the errors for these decays are reduced, the accurate theoretical predictions for $ΔΣ$ and $Δs$ will be possible.

Analytic coupling and Sudakov effects in exclusive processes: pion and $γ^{*}γ\toπ^{0}$ form factors

We develop and discuss in technical detail an infrared-finite factorization and optimized renormalization scheme for calculating exclusive processes, which enables the inclusion of transverse degrees of freedom without entailing suppression of calculated observables, like form factors. This is achieved by employing an analytic, i.e., infrared stable, running strong coupling $α_{\rm s}(Q^{2})$ which removes the Landau singularity at $Q^{2}=Λ_{\rm QCD}^{2}$ by a minimum power-behaved correction. The ensuing contributions to the cusp anomalous dimension - related to the Sudakov form factor - and to the quark anomalous dimension - which controls evolution - lead to an enhancement at high $Q^{2}$ of the hard part of exclusive amplitudes, calculated in perturbative QCD, while simultaneously improving its scaling behavior. The phenomenological implications of this framework are analyzed by applying it to the pion's electromagnetic form factor, including the NLO contribution to the hard-scattering amplitude, and also to the pion-photon transition at LO. For the pion wave function, an improved ansatz of the Brodsky-Huang-Lepage type is employed, which includes an effective (constituent-like) quark mass, $m_{\rm q}=0.33$ GeV. Predictions for both form factors are presented and compared to the experimental data, applying Brodsky-Lepage-Mackenzie commensurate scale setting. We find that the perturbative hart part prevails at momentum transfers above about 20 GeV ${}^{2}$, while at lower $Q^{2}$-values the pion form factor is dominated by Feynman-type contributions. The theoretical prediction for the $γ^{*}γ\to π^{0}$ form factor indicates that the true pion distribution amplitude may be somewhat broader than the asymptotic one.
