Robustness versus sensitivity in non-Hermitian topological lattices probed by pseudospectra

Non-Hermitian topological systems simultaneously posses two antagonistic features: ultra sensitivity due to exceptional points and robustness of topological zero energy modes, and it is unclear which one prevails under different perturbations. We study that question by applying the pseudospectra theory on the prototypical non-Hermitian SSH (NHSSH) lattice. Topological modes are robust with respect to chiral perturbations and sensitive to parity-time (PT) symmetry preserving perturbations. In fact, the chiral symmetry exactly at the exceptional point leads to the suppression of its sensitivity, corresponding to a lower order exceptional point. However, counterintuitively, they are most sensitive with respect to unstructured perturbations, leaving the fingerprint of the pertinent higher order exceptional (HEP) point.

Laser assisted tunneling in a Tonks-Girardeau gas

We investigate the applicability of laser assisted tunneling in a strongly interacting one-dimensional Bose gas (the Tonks-Girardeau gas) in optical lattices. We find that the stroboscopic dynamics of the Tonks-Girardeau gas in a continuous Wannier-Stark-ladder potential, supplemented with laser assisted tunneling, effectively realizes the ground state of one-dimensional hard-core bosons in a discrete lattice with nontrivial hopping phases. We compare observables that are affected by the interactions, such as the momentum distribution, natural orbitals and their occupancies, in the time-dependent continuous system, to those of the ground state of the discrete system. Stroboscopically, we find an excellent agreement, indicating that laser assisted tunneling is a viable technique for realizing novel ground states and phases with hard-core one-dimensional Bose gases.

Experimental Demonstration of a Synthetic Lorentz Force by Using Radiation Pressure

Synthetic magnetism in cold atomic gases opened the doors to many exciting novel physical systems and phenomena. Ubiquitous are the methods used for the creation of synthetic magnetic fields. They include rapidly rotating Bose-Einstein condensates employing the analogy between the Coriolis and the Lorentz force, and laser-atom interactions employing the analogy between the Berry phase and the Aharonov-Bohm phase. Interestingly, radiation pressure - being one of the most common forces induced by light - has not yet been used for synthetic magnetism. We experimentally demonstrate a synthetic Lorentz force, based on the radiation pressure and the Doppler effect, by observing the centre-of-mass motion of a cold atomic cloud. The force is perpendicular to the velocity of the cold atomic cloud, and zero for the cloud at rest. Our novel concept is straightforward to implement in a large volume, for a broad range of velocities, and can be extended to different geometries.

Quantum Čerenkov Effect from Hot Carriers in Graphene: An Efficient Plasmonic Source

Graphene plasmons (GPs) have been found to be an exciting plasmonic platform, thanks to their high field confinement and low phase velocity, motivating contemporary research to revisit established concepts in light-matter interaction. In a conceptual breakthrough that is now more than 80 years old, Čerenkov showed how charged particles emit shockwaves of light when moving faster than the phase velocity of light in a medium. To modern eyes, the Čerenkov effect (ČE) offers a direct and ultrafast energy conversion scheme from charge particles to photons. The requirement for relativistic particles, however, makes ČE-emission inaccessible to most nanoscale electronic and photonic devices. We show that GPs provide the means to overcome this limitation through their low phase velocity and high field confinement. The interaction between the charge carriers flowing inside graphene and GPs presents a highly efficient 2D Čerenkov emission, giving a versatile, tunable, and ultrafast conversion mechanism from electrical signal to plasmonic excitation.

Synthetic Lorentz force in classical atomic gases via Doppler effect and radiation pressure

We theoretically predict a novel type of synthetic Lorentz force for classical (cold) atomic gases, which is based on the Doppler effect and radiation pressure. A fairly uniform and strong force can be constructed for gases in macroscopic volumes of several cubic millimeters and more. This opens the possibility to mimic classical charged gases in magnetic fields, such as those in a tokamak, in cold atom experiments.

Four-dimensional photonic lattices and discrete tesseract solitons

We theoretically study discrete photonic lattices in more than three dimensions and point out that such systems can exist in continuous three-dimensional (3D) space. We study discrete diffraction in the linear regime, and predict the existence of four-dimensional (4D) tesseract solitons in nonlinear 4D periodic photonic lattices. Finally, we propose a design towards a potential realization of such periodic 4D lattices in experiments.

The pinning quantum phase transition in a Tonks Girardeau gas: diagnostics by ground state fidelity and the Loschmidt echo

We study the pinning quantum phase transition in a Tonks-Girardeau gas, both in equilibrium and out-of-equilibrium, using the ground state fidelity and the Loschmidt echo as diagnostic tools. The ground state fidelity (GSF) will have a dramatic decrease when the atomic density approaches the commensurate density of one particle per lattice well. This decrease is a signature of the pinning transition from the Tonks to the Mott insulating phase. We study the applicability of the fidelity for diagnosing the pinning transition in experimentally realistic scenarios. Our results are in excellent agreement with recent experimental work. In addition, we explore the out of equilibrium dynamics of the gas following a sudden quench with a lattice potential. We find all properties of the ground state fidelity are reflected in the Loschmidt echo dynamics i.e., in the non equilibrium dynamics of the Tonks-Girardeau gas initiated by a sudden quench of the lattice potential.

Anderson localization of partially-incoherent light

We study Anderson localization and propagation of partially-spatially incoherent wavepackets in linear disordered potentials, motivated by the insight that interference phenomena resulting from multiple scattering are affected by the coherence of the waves. We find that localization is delayed by incoherence: the more incoherent the waves are, the longer they diffusively spread while propagating in the medium. However, if all the eigenmodes of the system are exponentially localized (as in one- and two-dimensional disordered systems), any partially-incoherent wavepacket eventually exhibits localization with exponentially-decaying tails, after sufficiently long propagation distances. Interestingly, we find that the asymptotic behavior of the incoherent beam is similar to that of a single instantaneous coherent realization of the beam.

Loschmidt echo in one-dimensional interacting Bose gases

We explore Loschmidt echo in two regimes of one-dimensional (1D) interacting Bose gases: the strongly interacting Tonks-Girardeau (TG) regime, and the weakly-interacting mean-field regime. We find that the Loschmidt echo of a TG gas decays as a Gaussian when small perturbations are added to the Hamiltonian (the exponent is proportional to the number of particles and the magnitude of a small perturbation squared). In the mean-field regime the Loschmidt echo decays faster for larger interparticle interactions (nonlinearity), and it shows richer behavior than the TG Loschmidt echo dynamics, with oscillations superimposed on the overall decay.

Unconventional plasmon-phonon coupling in graphene

We calculate hybridization of plasmons and intrinsic optical phonons in graphene by using the self-consistent linear response formalism. We find that longitudinal plasmons (transverse magnetic modes) couple exclusively to transverse optical phonons, whereas graphene's transverse plasmons (transverse electric modes) couple only to longitudinal optical phonons. This mixing of polarizations is in contrast to the usual plasmon-phonon coupling in other systems. The resulting change in phonon frequencies increases (decreases) for transverse (longitudinal) phonons by increasing the concentration of charge carriers.

Anderson localization of a Tonks-Girardeau gas in potentials with controlled disorder

We theoretically demonstrate features of Anderson localization in the Tonks-Girardeau gas confined in one-dimensional (1D) potentials with controlled disorder. That is, we investigate the evolution of the single particle density and correlations of a Tonks-Girardeau wave packet in such disordered potentials. The wave packet is initially trapped, the trap is suddenly turned off, and after some time the system evolves into a localized steady state due to Anderson localization. The density tails of the steady state decay exponentially, while the coherence in these tails increases. The latter phenomenon corresponds to the same effect found in incoherent optical solitons.

Lieb-Liniger gas in a constant force potential

We use Gaudin's Fermi-Bose mapping operator to calculate exact solutions for the Lieb-Liniger model in a linear (constant force) potential (the constructed exact stationary solutions are referred to as the Lieb-Liniger-Airy wave functions). The ground state properties of the gas in the wedge-like trapping potential are calculated in the strongly interacting regime by using Girardeau's Fermi-Bose mapping and the pseudopotential approach in the $1/c$-approximation ($c$ denotes the strength of the interaction). We point out that quantum dynamics of Lieb-Liniger wave packets in the linear potential can be calculated by employing an $N$-dimensional Fourier transform as in the case of free expansion.

Ground state properties of a one-dimensional strongly-interacting Bose-Fermi mixture in a double-well potential

We calculate the reduced single-particle density matrix (RSPDM), momentum distributions, natural orbitals and their occupancies, for a strongly interacting one-dimensional Bose-Fermi mixture in a double-well potential with a large central barrier. For mesoscopic systems, we find that the ground state properties qualitatively differ for mixtures with even number of particles (both odd-odd and even-even mixtures) in comparison to mixtures with odd particle numbers (odd-even and even-odd mixtures). For even mixtures the momentum distribution is smooth, whereas the momentum distribution of odd mixtures possesses distinct modulations; the differences are observed also in the off-diagonal correlations of the RSPDM, and in the occupancies of natural orbitals. The calculation is based on a derived formula which enables efficient calculation of the RSPDM for mesoscopic mixtures in various potentials.

Reflection of a Lieb-Liniger wave packet from the hard-wall potential

Nonequilibrium dynamics of a Lieb-Liniger system in the presence of the hard-wall potential is studied. We demonstrate that a time-dependent wave function, which describes quantum dynamics of a Lieb-Liniger wave packet comprised of N particles, can be found by solving an $N$-dimensional Fourier transform; this follows from the symmetry properties of the many-body eigenstates in the presence of the hard-wall potential. The presented formalism is employed to numerically calculate reflection of a few-body wave packet from the hard wall for various interaction strengths and incident momenta.

Single-particle density matrix for a time-dependent strongly interacting one-dimensional Bose gas

We derive a $1/c$-expansion for the single-particle density matrix of a strongly interacting time-dependent one-dimensional Bose gas, described by the Lieb-Liniger model ($c$ denotes the strength of the interaction). The formalism is derived by expanding Gaudin's Fermi-Bose mapping operator up to $1/c$-terms. We derive an efficient numerical algorithm for calculating the density matrix for time-dependent states in the strong coupling limit, which evolve from a family of initial conditions in the absence of an external potential. We have applied the formalism to study contraction dynamics of a localized wave packet upon which a parabolic phase is imprinted initially.
