Kineo-Elasticity and Nonreciprocal Phonons by Rashba-induced Interfacial Spin-Lattice Coupling

We identify a previously unrecognized spin-lattice coupling that is allowed in the presence of broken inversion symmetry that can be considered as a lattice analogue to the electronic Rashba spin-orbit coupling. In the low-frequency regime with magnons integrated out, the interfacial spin-lattice coupling is shown to engender a kineo-elastic term in the phonon Lagrangian that couples the strain on the lattice to its velocity and thereby gives rise to a nonreciprocity in transverse phonon velocity. We further analyze the full magnon-phonon spectrum and uncover directional hybridization and absorption, leading to asymmetric phonon propagation lengths for opposite directions. Our results indicate that such interfacial spin-lattice coupling can serve as an efficient route to achieve nonreciprocal phonon propagation properties in magnetic heterostructures with strong Rashba spin-orbit coupling.

Tunable large spin Nernst effect in a two-dimensional magnetic bilayer

We theoretically investigate topological spin transport of the magnon-polarons in bilayer magnet with two-dimensional square lattices. Our theory is motivated by recent reports on the van der Waals magnets which show the reversible electrical switching of the interlayer magnetic order between antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic orders. The magnetoelastic interaction opens band gaps and allows the interband transition between different excitation states. In the layered antiferromagnet, due to the interband transition between the magnon-polaron states, the spin Berry curvature which allows the topological spin transport occurs even if the time-reversal symmetry is preserved. We find that the spin Berry curvature in the layered antiferromagnet is very large due to the small energy spacing between two magnon-like states. As a result, the spin Nernst conductivity shows sudden increase (or decrease) at the phase transition point between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases. Our result suggest that the ubiquity of tunable topological spin transports in two dimensional magnetic systems.

Numerical Computation of Spin-Transfer Torques for Antiferromagnetic Domain walls

We numerically compute current-induced spin-transfer torques for antiferromagnetic domain walls, based on a linear response theory in a tight-binding model. We find that, unlike for ferromagnetic domain wall motion, the contribution of adiabatic spin torque to antiferromagnetic domain wall motion is negligible, consistent with previous theories. As a result, the non-adiabatic spin-transfer torque is a main driving torque for antiferromagnetic domain wall motion. Moreover, the non-adiabatic spin-transfer torque for narrower antiferromagnetic domain walls increases more rapidly than that for ferromagnetic domain walls, which is attributed to the enhanced spin mistracking process for antiferromagnetic domain walls.

Role of orbital hybridization in anisotropic magnetoresistance

We theoretically and numerically show that longitudinal orbital currents in ferromagnets depend on the magnetization direction, which contribute to the anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR). This orbital contribution to AMR arises from the momentum-dependent orbital splitting, which is generally present in multi-orbital systems through the orbital anisotropy and the orbital hybridization. We highlight the latter orbital hybridization as an unrecognized origin of AMR and also as a common origin of AMR and orbital Hall effect.

SU(3) Topology of Magnon-Phonon Hybridization in 2D Antiferromagnets

Magnon-phonon hybrid excitations are studied theoretically in a two-dimensional antiferromagnet with an easy axis normal to the plane. We show that two magnon bands and one phonon band are intertwined by the magnetoelastic coupling through a nontrivial SU(3) topology, which can be intuitively perceived by identifying a skyrmion structure in the momentum space. We develop a continuum theory as the long-wavelength approximation to the tight-binding model, showing our results are insensitive to lattice details and generally applicable to two-dimensional antiferromagnets. The theoretical results can be probed by measuring the thermal Hall conductance as a function of the temperature and the magnetic field. We envision that the magnetoelastic coupling in antiferromagnets can be a promising venue in search of various topological excitations, which cannot be found in magnetic or elastic models alone.

Topological waveguide based on metamaterials of magnetic solitons

We theoretically investigate coupled gyration modes of magnetic solitons whose distances to the nearest neighbors are staggered. In a one-dimensional bipartite lattice, analogous to the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, there is a mid-gap gyration mode bounded at the domain wall connecting topologically distinct two phases. As a technological application, we show that a one-dimensional domain-wall string in a two-dimensional soliton lattice can serve as a topological waveguide of magnetic excitations, which offers functionalities of a signal localization and a selective propagation of the frequency modes. Our result offers an alternative way to control of the magnetic excitation modes by using a magnetic metamaterial for future spintronic devices.

Antiferromagnetic domain wall motion driven by spin-orbit torques

We theoretically investigate dynamics of antiferromagnetic domain walls driven by spin-orbit torques in antiferromagnet/heavy metal bilayers. We show that spin-orbit torques drive antiferromagnetic domain walls much faster than ferromagnetic domain walls. As the domain wall velocity approaches the maximum spin-wave group velocity, the domain wall undergoes Lorentz contraction and emits spin-waves in the terahertz frequency range. The interplay between spin orbit torques and the relativistic dynamics of antiferromagnetic domain walls leads to the efficient manipulation of antiferromagnetic spin textures and paves the way for the generation of high frequency signals in antiferromagnets.

Arbitrary Chern number generation in the three-band model from momentum space

A simple, general rule for generating a three-band model with arbitrary Chern numbers is given. The rule is based on the idea of monopole charge-changing unitary operations and can be realized by two types of simple unitary operations on the original Hamiltonian. A pair of monopole charges are required to produce desired topological numbers in the three-band model. The set of rules presented here offers a way to produce lattice models of any desired Chern numbers for three-sublattice situations.

Soliton Defects in One-dimensional Topological Three-band Hamiltonian

Defect formation in the one-dimensional topological three-band model is examined within both lattice and continuum models. Classic results of Jackiw-Rebbi and Rice-Mele for the soliton charge is generalized to the three-band model. The presence of the central flat band in the three-band model makes the soliton charge as a function of energy behave in a qualitatively different way from the two-band Dirac model case. Quantum field-theoretical calculation of Goldstone and Wilczek is also generalized to the three-band model to obtain the soliton charge. Diamond-chain lattice is shown to be an ideal structure to host a topological three-band structure.

BPS Vortices, $Q$-balls, and $Q$-vortices in ${\cal N}=6$} Chern-Simons Matter Theory

We investigate the vortex-type BPS equations in the ABJM theory without and with mass-deformation. We systematically classify the BPS equations in terms of the number of supersymmetry and the R-symmetries of the undeformed and mass-deformed ABJM theories. For the undeformed case, we analyze the ${\cal N}=2$ BPS equations for U(2)$\times$U(2) gauge symmetry and obtain a coupled differential equation which can be reduced to either Liouville- or Sinh-Gordon-type vortex equations according to the choice of scalar functions. For the mass-deformed case with U($N$)$\times$U($N$) gauge symmetry, we obtain some number of pairs of coupled differential equations from the ${\cal N}=1,2$ BPS equations, which can be reduced to the vortex equations in Maxwell-Higgs theory or Chern-Simons matter theories as special cases. We discuss the solutions. In ${\cal N}=3$ vortex equations Chern-Simons-type vortex equation is not allowed. We also show that ${\cal N}=\frac52, \frac32, \frac12$ BPS equations are equivalent to those with higher integer supersymmetries.

Three-Band Model for Quantum Hall and Spin Hall Effects

Topological properties of a certain class of spinless three-band Hamiltonians are shown to be summed up by the Skyrmion number in momentum space, analogous to the case of two-band Hamiltonian. Topological tight-binding Hamiltonian on a Kagome lattice is analyzed with this view. When such a Hamiltonian is "folded", the two bands with opposite Chern numbers merge into a degenerate band exhibiting non-Abelian gauge connection. Conserved pseudo-spin current operator can be constructed in this case and used to compute the pseudo-spin Hall conductance. Our model Hamiltonians belong to the symmetry class D and AI according to the ten-fold classification scheme.

${\cal N}=3$ Supersymmetric Effective Action of D2-branes in Massive IIA String Theory

We obtain a new-type of ${\cal N}=3$ Yang-Mills Chern-Simons theory from the Mukhi-Papageorgakis Higgsing of the ${\cal N}=3$ Gaiotto-Tomasiello theory. This theory has ${\cal N}=1$ BPS fuzzy funnel solution which is expressed in terms of the seven generators of SU(3), excluding $T_8$. We propose that this is an effective theory of multiple D2-branes with D6- and D8-branes background in massive IIA string theory.
