Superheavy Light Quarks and the Strong P, T Problem

New superstrong forces, analogous to QCD but featuring a larger mass scale, should they exist, would offer new possibilities for addressing the strong P, T, problem. One can implement the "massless quark" solution in a phenomenologically acceptable way, by using a massless quark that is always confined within superheavy particles, and is therefore effectively superheavy: a cryptoquark. Assuming confinement and chiral symmetry breaking from the superstrong dynamics, we find a new mechanism to generate an axion field without introducing new fundamental scalar fields.

Kinetic theory of a longitudinally expanding system of scalar particles

A simple kinematical argument suggests that the classical approximation may be inadequate to describe the evolution of a system with an anisotropic particle distribution. In order to verify this quantitatively, we study the Boltzmann equation for a longitudinally expanding system of scalar particles interacting with a $ϕ^4$ coupling, that mimics the kinematics of a heavy ion collision at very high energy. We consider only elastic $2\to 2$ scatterings, and we allow the formation of a Bose-Einstein condensate in overpopulated situations by solving the coupled equations for the particle distribution and the particle density in the zero mode. For generic CGC-like initial conditions with a large occupation number and a moderate coupling, the solutions of the full Boltzmann equation do not follow a classical attractor behavior.

Radiative energy loss and v2 spectra for viscous hydrodynamics

This work investigates the first correction to the equilibrium phase space distribution and its effects on spectra and elliptic flow in heavy ion collisions. We show that the departure from equilibrium on the freezeout surface is the largest part of the viscous corrections to $v_2(p_T)$. However, the momentum dependence of the departure from equilibrium is not known {\it a priori}, and it is probably not proportional to $p_T^2$ as has been assumed in hydrodynamic simulations. At high momentum in weakly coupled plasmas it is determined by the rate of radiative energy loss and is proportional to $p_T^{3/2}$. The weaker $p_T$ dependence leads to straighter $v_2(p_T)$ curves at the same value of viscosity. Further, the departure from equilibrium is generally species dependent. A species dependent equilibration rate, with baryons equilibrating faster than mesons, can explain ``constituent quark scaling'' without invoking coalescence models.
