Plasmonic band and defect mode of one dimensional graphene lattice

Photonic crystals based on graphene plasmons (GPs) are highly tunable and can accurately control photonic transmission at the nanoscales. In this work, the transfer matrix method (TMM) is introduced to study graphene plasmonic crystal (GPC) with periodic surface conductivity in the case of normal incidence. The introduction of TMM after considering the abnormal phase scattering of the abrupt interface gives an idea to accurately manipulate plasmonic crystal structures, and can reduce the calculation workload to a certain extent. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified with the plane wave expansion method in our model. Furthermore, we study the defect mode and the plasmonic Tamm state in GPC by the transfer matrix method.

Phase- and frequency-controlled interference nonlinear optics in superconducting circuits

We present a new type of phase- and frequency-sensitive amplification and attenuation in a cyclically driven three-level superconducting Josephson system. Different from the previous linear theory of pure phase-sensitive amplification, a new physical mechanism$-$combined action of nonlinear wave mixing and wave interference$-$is developed and leads to not only amplification but also attenuation. This is referred to as interference nonlinear optics. Our results show the sudden output signal transition from large gain to deep suppression by tuning the relative phase and in this case the system can act as a phase-controlled amplitude modulator. We also show the continuous change from output enhancement to attenuation by adjusting the driving-field frequency and in this situation the system behaves as a frequency-controlled amplitude modulator. Our study opens up a new perspective for its widespread applications in quantum information science.

Cross Kerr Effect Induced by Coupled Josephson Qubits in Circuit Quantum Electrodynamics

We propose a scheme for implementing cross Kerr nonlinearity between two superconducting transmission line resonators (TLR) via their interaction with a coupler which is constructed by two superconducting charge qubits connected to each other via a superconducting quantum interference device. When suitably driven, the coupler can induce very strong cross phase modulation (XPM) between the two TLRs due to its N-type level structure and the consequent electromagnetically induced transparency in its lowest states. The flexibility of our design can lead to various inter-TLR coupling configurations. The obtained cross Kerr coefficient is large enough to allow many important quantum operations in which only few photons are involved. We further show that this scheme is very robust against the fluctuations in solid state circuits. Our numerical calculations imply that the absorption and dispersion resulted from the decoherence of the coupler are very small compared with the strength of the proposed XPM.
