Effective environments: Preparation of stationary states with inverse temperature ranging from positive to negative values

In this paper, we discuss how effective environments incorporating periodic measurements can be used to prepare a two-level system (TLS) in almost arbitrary thermal states: Concretely, we study a TLS coupled to a spin environment, the magnetization of which is measured periodically. In ensemble average these measurements cause a relaxation of the TLS into a thermal (diagonal) state. By adjusting the time between the measurements and the detuning of the environmental spins, the creation of very low temperatures as well as inversion becomes possible. Our analytical results derived for large environments are numerically shown to be valid even for quite small environments, down to only a few spins.

Relaxation of a Simple Quantum Random Matrix Model

We will derive here the relaxation behavior of a simple quantum random matrix model. The aim is to derive the effective equations which rise when a random matrix interaction is taken in the weak coupling limit. The physical situation this model represents is that a quantum particle restricted to move on two sites, where every site has N possible energy states. The hopping from one site to another is then modeled by a random matrix. The techniques used here can be applied to many variations of the model.

Work exchange between quantum systems: the spin-oscillator model

With the development of quantum thermodynamics it has been shown that relaxation to thermal equilibrium and with it the concept of heat flux may emerge directly from quantum mechanics. This happens for a large class of quantum systems if embedded into another quantum environment. In this paper, we discuss the complementary question of the emergence of work flux from quantum mechanics. We introduce and discuss two different methods to assess the work source quality of a system, one based on the generalized factorization approximation, the other based on generalized definitions of work and heat. By means of those methods, we show that small quantum systems can, indeed, act as work reservoirs. We illustrate this behavior for a simple system consisting of a spin coupled to an oscillator and investigate the effects of two different interactions on the work source quality. One case will be shown to allow for a work source functionality of arbitrarily high quality.
