Data-Driven Deep Learning Based Hybrid Beamforming for Aerial Massive MIMO-OFDM Systems with Implicit CSI

In an aerial hybrid massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system, how to design a spectral-efficient broadband multi-user hybrid beamforming with a limited pilot and feedback overhead is challenging. To this end, by modeling the key transmission modules as an end-to-end (E2E) neural network, this paper proposes a data-driven deep learning (DL)-based unified hybrid beamforming framework for both the time division duplex (TDD) and frequency division duplex (FDD) systems with implicit channel state information (CSI). For TDD systems, the proposed DL-based approach jointly models the uplink pilot combining and downlink hybrid beamforming modules as an E2E neural network. While for FDD systems, we jointly model the downlink pilot transmission, uplink CSI feedback, and downlink hybrid beamforming modules as an E2E neural network. Different from conventional approaches separately processing different modules, the proposed solution simultaneously optimizes all modules with the sum rate as the optimization object. Therefore, by perceiving the inherent property of air-to-ground massive MIMO-OFDM channel samples, the DL-based E2E neural network can establish the mapping function from the channel to the beamformer, so that the explicit channel reconstruction can be avoided with reduced pilot and feedback overhead. Besides, practical low-resolution phase shifters (PSs) introduce the quantization constraint, leading to the intractable gradient backpropagation when training the neural network. To mitigate the performance loss caused by the phase quantization error, we adopt the transfer learning strategy to further fine-tune the E2E neural network based on a pre-trained network that assumes the ideal infinite-resolution PSs. Numerical results show that our DL-based schemes have considerable advantages over state-of-the-art schemes.

Distributed Algorithm Over Time-Varying Unbalanced Topologies for Optimization Problem Subject to Multiple Local Constraints

This paper studies the distributed optimization problem with possibly nonidentical local constraints, where its global objective function is composed of $N$ convex functions. The aim is to solve the considered optimization problem in a distributed manner over time-varying unbalanced directed topologies by using only local information and performing only local computations. Towards this end, a new distributed discrete-time algorithm is developed by synthesizing the row stochastic matrices sequence and column stochastic matrices sequence analysis technique. Furthermore, for the developed distributed discrete-time algorithm, its convergence property to the optimal solution as well as its convergence rate are established under some mild assumptions. Numerical simulations are finally presented to verify the theoretical results.

Multi-Task Variational Information Bottleneck

Multi-task learning (MTL) is an important subject in machine learning and artificial intelligence. Its applications to computer vision, signal processing, and speech recognition are ubiquitous. Although this subject has attracted considerable attention recently, the performance and robustness of the existing models to different tasks have not been well balanced. This article proposes an MTL model based on the architecture of the variational information bottleneck (VIB), which can provide a more effective latent representation of the input features for the downstream tasks. Extensive observations on three public data sets under adversarial attacks show that the proposed model is competitive to the state-of-the-art algorithms concerning the prediction accuracy. Experimental results suggest that combining the VIB and the task-dependent uncertainties is a very effective way to abstract valid information from the input features for accomplishing multiple tasks.

Fixed-Time Cooperative Tracking Control for Double-Integrator Multi-Agent Systems: A Time-Based Generator Approach

In this paper, both the fixed-time distributed consensus tracking and the fixed-time distributed average tracking problems for double-integrator-type multi-agent systems with bounded input disturbances are studied, respectively. Firstly, a new practical robust fixed-time sliding mode control method based on the time-based generator is proposed. Secondly, a fixed-time distributed consensus tracking observer for double-integrator-type multi-agent systems is designed to estimate the state disagreements between the leader and the followers under undirected and directed communication, respectively. Thirdly, a fixed-time distributed average tracking observer for double-integrator-type multi-agent systems is designed to measure the average value of reference signals under undirected communication. Note that both the observers for the distributed consensus tracking and the distributed average tracking are devised based on time-based generators and can be extended to that of high-order multi-agent systems trivially. Furthermore, by combing the fixed-time sliding mode control with the fixed-time observers, the fixed-time controllers are designed to solve the distributed consensus tracking and the distributed average tracking problems. Finally, a few numerical simulations are shown to verify the results.

Designing Fully Distributed Consensus Protocols for Linear Multi-agent Systems with Directed Graphs

This paper addresses the distributed consensus protocol design problem for multi-agent systems with general linear dynamics and directed communication graphs. Existing works usually design consensus protocols using the smallest real part of the nonzero eigenvalues of the Laplacian matrix associated with the communication graph, which however is global information. In this paper, based on only the agent dynamics and the relative states of neighboring agents, a distributed adaptive consensus protocol is designed to achieve leader-follower consensus for any communication graph containing a directed spanning tree with the leader as the root node. The proposed adaptive protocol is independent of any global information of the communication graph and thereby is fully distributed. Extensions to the case with multiple leaders are further studied.

Distributed Consensus of Linear Multi-Agent Systems with Switching Directed Topologies

This paper addresses the distributed consensus problem for a linear multi-agent system with switching directed communication topologies. By appropriately introducing a linear transformation, the consensus problem is equivalently converted to a stabilization problem for a class of switched linear systems. Some sufficient consensus conditions are then derived by using tools from the matrix theory and stability analysis of switched systems. It is proved that consensus in such a multi-agent system can be ensured if each agent is stabilizable and each possible directed topology contains a directed spanning tree. Finally, a numerical simulation is given for illustration.

Distributed H-infinity Tracking Control for Discrete-Time Multi-Agent Systems with a High-Dimensional Leader

This paper considers the distributed H-infinity leader-following tracking problem for a class of discrete time multi-agent systems with a high-dimensional dynamic leader. It is assumed that output information about the leader is only available to designated followers, and the dynamics of the followers are subject to perturbations. To achieve distributed H-infinity leader-following tracking, a new class of control protocols is proposed which is based on the feedback from the nearest neighbors as well as a distributed state estimator. Under the assumptions that dynamics of the leader are detectable and the communication topology contains a directed spanning tree, sufficient conditions are obtained that enable all followers to track the leader while achieving a desired H-infinity leader-following tracking performance. Numerical simulations illustrate the effectiveness of the theoretical analysis.

Guaranteed Cost Tracking for Uncertain Coupled Multi-agent Systems Using Consensus over a Directed Graph

This paper considers the leader-follower control problem for a linear multi-agent system with directed communication topology and linear nonidentical uncertain coupling subject to integral quadratic constraints (IQCs). A consensus-type control protocol is proposed based on each agent's states relative to its neighbors and leader's state relative to agents which observe the leader. A sufficient condition is obtained by overbounding the cost function. Based on this sufficient condition, a computational algorithm is introduced to minimize the proposed guaranteed bound on tracking performance, which yields a suboptimal bound on the system consensus control and tracking performance. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated using a simulation example.
